Old Detroit jacket dominates the "new " Detroit ( old top pockets were like the "chore coat") . Top double pockets and a nylon quilted red lining that didn't act liker a swiffer, picking up animal hair, lint, dust.....
Something not mentioned here but worth a thought is that fleece wear down much quicker than canvas. The fleece might be warmer initially but if worn and washed a lot will loose its warmer advantage quickly.
I bought the Yukon active jack two years ago while searching for the warmest coat that I can find. They make a parka version of it also, but I can't imagine needing a warmer coat. I purchased mine because I was working on a car lot, and walking across that car lot in the dead of winter would chill you to the bone, but not with the Yukon active jack! The wind resistance is just as impressive as the warmth factor that the coat provides. I'm so glad I own the coat, but for Southern Illinois, it's definitely overkill!
this is a very useful video, thank you! Love Carhartt, I had a coat donated to me from my church when I was a little kid, am in my 20's and it's still going strong aside from some tearing. 'd love to get another again.
Im a truck driver who may be in 60 degrers one day and below zero the next. Limited space for storing too many different jackets in my truck. A combo that has worked for me is a carhartt sherpa lined hoodie and a sherpa lined detroit Jacket. When the weather is too much i wear them both. Perfect combo for me. My jacket is 9 years old and still going strong. Im to the point of buying a new carhartt just because I want one lol. Seems like they never wear out and only get better.
I have a Yukon Extreme from like 15 years ago. It's THE warmest coat I've ever had. The wind doesn't get through either. I can only wear it if it's sub 20° outside. Just walking I start to sweat. It's that warm.
As a former retailer of the Carhartt WIP range in the UK I find these vids very informative. My association with this wonderful brand goes back over two decades however here in the UK (i’m in Northern Ireland) they are best known as a streetwear icon …while there’s a general awareness of the workwear heritage (more so recently as the European side has wisely been referencing it more) it’s very difficult to get the main line range here …in fact off hand I can’t think of anywhere. I’d love to get a walk around some of the US stores such as Dave’s New York etc…maybe someday. Thanks again.
Depends on the area your going to. The southernmost states you don’t need a jacket during winter, as to the northernmost states you’ll need a snow suit during the winter
Picked up the Duck Traditional Coat in 2004, zipper finally gave out on me. Definitely getting a new one. I didn't realize that it wasn't the warmest coat Carhartt makes
Hey Carl! Your content is truly great and I've become quite the Carhartt fan! I live in PA and have HORRIBLE circulation despite working out daily and a healthy diet. I would absolutely love a video on gloves and socks. Truly high quality, warm, well made socks and gloves, although I know you don't deal with anything less! Keep up all the great work!
I've found for warm socks, the carhartt winter socks have been the best for me. My dad also swears by them and he works outside in Northern Saskatchewan during winter. I'm not sure their official number but they are white and gold. Or you can get heated socks, gloves and insoles as another option
I wear Darn Tough through and through. They are super high quality merino wool, made in america, and have a lifetime, no questions asked, warranty. (Although I bought 14 pairs about 5 years back and still haven't had any holes or problems). They come in a variety of weights, but the full cushion boot sock is my favorite. For gloves I currently use either the Filson merino wool gloves or the vermonter from Vermont Glove Co. , the latter being made in america and fitting my work wear needs.
What's your healthy diet? Grilled chicken and greens? I'm born and raised in Sicily. Which is basically north Africa, it's hot pretty much year round compared to North East, I'm in New York, and I don't have problems with cold weather and circulation, but I also eat red onion salads, fish and occasionally organ meats, which I'm told are all good for circulation. If.you don't already eat those, maybe give them a try.
Such a great video, I am sure thousands of people (if not millions) will benefit from this video when needing to know what jacket is best for them! [Carhartt - buy this man a drink!!]
Just purchased a Super Dux Insulated Coat for winter and chose it over the Yukon Active Jac, and Firm Duck Active Jac. I'm glad I did based on your video and their tests! Care to do another video for gloves?
Awesome video, really informative! It would be really cool to see a comparison of all the active jacs, it seems like they're up there in popularity and they're the ones I'm looking into buying.
I wore the Sherwood jacket last winter and so far this year. I am happy to report that it is very, very warm. This morning was 19 with a breeze and I was pretty comfortable with it and two layers of shirt underneath just walking around doing a site precon.
Great video ! Appreciate all the info. I have the firm duck active jacket with quilted flannel lining. I like the j130 updated version of the active jacket but had to have the firm duck of the j140.
Having the Sherwood and knowing how ridiculously warm it is I can give you a gauge of 1.83. It’s so insulated you can wear a regular t shirt under it and be comfortable working in single digits and 30mph winds.
Having experience with the Sherwood hi vis jacket i can say first hand that Carhartt needs to utilize some seam seal because it will start to leak in the seams on the arms/arm pits.
Bibs with the zipper on the side are truly the warmest thing to wear. I'm a construction worker from NYC and work in building foundations, piers,High rises etc etc.
How do the top 4 jackets 🧥 compare to brands like Canada Goode or Moose Knuckles?? Are they the same warmth?? What does Clo mean for temperature? Is a 1.75-2.0 Clo means you can wear it in -15 F??
Now I have to wait for when you review hats, I’ve been looking to get a full brim Minnetonka fold up hat, but I’ve hesitated because I know jack about clothes.
Have you ever tried the Carhartt Sawtooth parka? I live in Denmark, and sadly I'm not able to get the Yukon Extreme Parka, which is the one I actually want, but I'm able to get the Sawtooth. But there's not a single video on it on UA-cam. So in case you've ever used it, I would love to hear your opinion on it. No matter what, thank you very much for all your videos! they are very helpful and intertaining
During the mid 90´s I 've bought a carrhart jacket which was iirc pure wool and had a stylish fischerman jacket look , the carrhart logo was also not patched on the jacket . Too bad they don't make these anymore
Are you familiar with the Carhartt WIP line? I have a Michigan washed duck wool lined water resistant version that's warm and versatile. Also, wondering if you've used Timberland Pro workwear, Sorel hunting jackets or Spiewak cold gear?
Hey Carl need your opinion please. I been looking at #11 for a month now I love idea of the sherpa inside lining. After watching your video I'm also now looking at #8 now. I live in NJ so it gets pretty cold here. So what's your opinion on wich one you think I should get?
ok so for number 1how does the synthetic down hold up? Does it pile up and move after a few years of service and washing? I have a LL BEAN jacket that has this issue, after 3 years the elbows are no longer warm at all as the synthetic down has moved to other areas of the coat, and we followed all washing instructions?
Love your videos! Spend way too many nights watching them. I am in Seattle and am looking for a work jacket that can be used around freezing with some light rain for the winter. Would you recommend a Detroit jacket, full swing active, or a waxed cotton Barbour style?
I need help with sizing!🤔 I'm 5'11" 170lbs. I'd like to be able to wear a hoodie underneath comfortably. I'm stuck between the "Yukon extreme full swing" and the "full swing traditional". I live in mid west canada. I work out in -30c at times but I don't want a jacket that is to heavy. My father has the tradition from 2000ish era and his is a size large tall yet he is only 5'9"ish 190lbs and it fits him well so I'm wondering if they changed there sizing over the years or his just shrunk being washed so much in 20 years. As I have a different Carhartt jacket that is a large tall from 2019 that is way to long in the arms for me.
I’m tryna get the duck traditional jacket but I don’t know if I should buy the a two x for sleeves or a Big and tall xl because I’m 6’4 and I’m arms are long
Just bought the full swing cryder insulated jac and it’s super comfortable but mane the 3xl is short. I might be returning it for another full swing jacket or just the regular extremes active jacket. Not a fan of how short it is.
Hi! I need a winter work jacket, but I already have a thermal lined active jacket, can anyone tell me if the washed duck sherpa jacket can keep warm in -10 degrees(14 ℉), maybe paired with thermal underwear and a hoodie can resist -20 degree(-4 ℉)weather, or should I buy a J140 active jacket? Thank you so much!
Sorry buddy, I enjoy your reviews and Carhartt makes an outstanding product line. I own a couple thousand dollars of Carhartt clothing. Unfortunately I made the decision yesterday to no longer buy their product. They went woke and I don’t agree with their decision. I’d rather be wet and cold than buy their stuff any longer. Keep up the good work and reviews
I need a certain carhart jacket but i’m in the UK, other youtubers call it the (sierra) looks exactly like the J130…. i think home depo sells it but always out out of stock, it’s fleece lined jacket but can’t find a single person posting over seas, they say it’s the second warmest jacket they sell, it’s ice cold in the UK at the moment 👌🏻🇬🇧 What is warmer the j130 or the sierra with the sherpa fleeced line???? Thanks
Working in a Cryder jacket with nothing but a long sleeve T underneath with a wind chill of 18°-20° F I'll be washed down in sweat. It's fine if Im standing still but I'm a hot natured person so I have to dress in layers in the winter.
I like all Car hearts that have a cuff Around your waist around your wrist usable friendly lastibility long cuff Coats wear to easier and to long over your hands And They hold heat better With being lighter
I would like to buy a detroit jacket, but in portugal you dont get to try one, just online, so i dont know how it would fit me, id like the length to be at the waist, so if you have any tips let me know, maybe comparisons to other carhartt jackets.
So you’re saying the Yukon active jacket has the same warmth as the original firm duck active jacket ? Then why would you pay an extra 70 bucks for a Yukon one?
Get a durable shell/canvas jacket and the layer it with down. Nothing compares to down on retaining heat. I'm talking real heat, sub 30 below, get yourself a Mountain Hardware Absolute Zero or a Rab expedition coat, then a canvas cover for protection.
Loved the video. Have a question I have an older Carhart chore coat that is Arctic lined I’ve noticed nothing had that insulation has the Arctic lined been superseded by the 3M or other lining?
I got a J130 jacket for christmas to wear for work, but it's not as warm as my Army field jacket with liner. Any tips on what I could use to make a liner for it? Picked up a fleece jacket from the thrift store that might work, but unmodified it's too warm under the Carhartt. I don't "run warm", unfortunately, or the J130 could've maybe been ok on it's own. Don't want to freeze here in MI, but overheating isn't great either. Can't wear my field jacket for work, it's not professional looking enough with the morale patches on it.

Depends on the area your going to. The southernmost states you don’t need a jacket during winter, as to the northernmost states you’ll need a snow suit during the winter
yes sir carhartt is a great durable brand I use it for work and daily, their jackets, overalls, shirts are outstanding pieces of work gear
if just visiting there’s no need to blow a bunch of money on a nice coat
I don’t think non Americans are allowed to buy Carhartts. Non American have to buy from the WIP line.
Their Sherpa lined vest is great very warm , and the Detroit is doing well in English conditions . Some great quality gear from carhartt 👍🏼
Right on!
My Grandma got me the quilted flannel active jacket for my birthday and I gotta say it's one of the best birthday gifts I've ever received
Grandma gets points for an awesome gift!
Picked up the Duck Traditional Coat in 2004, zipper finally gave out on me. Definitely getting a new one. I didn't realize that it wasn't the warmest coat Carhartt makes
Man you made my choice in jackets easy. I settled on the super dux insulated traditional coat. I love that thing thanks for all your help.

you should try out some ventile jackets. Id recommend Hilltrek, all made in Scotland with excellent craftsmanship

I just got a Carhartt coat for Christmas and I love it so much.

What do you think about the Carhartt's Shoreline Jacket that Chevrolet sells for warmth?
which vest is warmer? sherpa or arctic lined? im not sure which insulation listed is equivalent.

I am in Seattle and am looking for a work jacket that can be used around freezing with some light rain for the winter. Would you recommend a Detroit jacket, full swing active, or a waxed cotton Barbour style?
The Detroit jacket is only good for temps 50* and above, a Barbour jacket isn't a winter jacket at all unless you wear a ton of clothes underneath.
I have that Sherpa jacket! Super warm just like they said. Some times it beats wearing a vest. Just sucks that the hiviz get dirty so easy.

The Yukon series has a few differences, but the major one is the shell material. It’s far better in the snow/rain all day.
Thanks. Getting ready for Germany 🇩🇪
