I have nothing left to say.
Except you're a bitch.
**1:06 I meant to say 2 bar sections. I was tired filming the speaking for this sue me god dammit
It would be funny having a 12 bar solo 😂
Brandon growing facial hair,
Congratulations for becoming an adult 😆
Kirk's solo was dope... you are wrong. Choke on balls chomo
Dude that's a horrible solo. It's not Metallica clean up your pimple first before you try Metallica solo smh.
GET OFF THE CIGARETTE! lol
I am one of the rare persons who liked the solo
bull crap, no one hates the solo except for the usual metallica haters.and click bate UA-camrs that shit on Kirk to get more views.
same i loved tht shit
Me too! I was kind of mystified by all the backlash, I'm not a guitar player, though😂
yes you are hahahahahahahaha and the other two ....
but i guess it's not that is a bad solo....it surely fits.... but i think it's pretty basic it's a bunch of techniques put together .... i always liked megadeth more for their solos......
this is my point by the way
Your solo was really good, but it didn’t fit the song at all. 10/10 without the backing track, but honestly a 5/10 with it. That being said, if Kirk played the solo a little less sloppy, it would have sounded a lot better. They should have made him do another take.
It was just nonsense thrown together, kirk hasn't been good since the 80s lmao.
the original solo is total shit bro if you listen carefully it's just a mix of old solos that are already existing in older song of metallica on different scales i love metallica even the less good albums (my preferred album is frantic because of the sound of the drum) but this solo is shit whitout being an hater because i love metallica since the beginning
I'm gonna go WAY out on a limb here and say, I agree. 😂
@@Trahzy nah. black album and maybe the loads was good too. And unforgiven 3 was also a good solo
Maybe this was the 50th take and the best
Hammett's solo wasn't even phoned in, it was faxed in..
💀
So happy you didn't make a video that everyone else was making. Reacting to how amazing they think the song is. I like the song too. I love your content and your style. Hope to see you continue doing well.
The song is overrated trash! People like it, because it's Metallica, but if any other band (not to mention if it's another Big Four band) releases that song, it'll get mediocre reviews, or even heavy criticism.
@@zardoz8023 totally agree. Imagine what would happen if Testament released this song. I'm not a fan but their last record is utterly impressive.
I think this new Metallica song deserved a better solo.
they'll need a better guitarist than hammett for that
I completely agree.
I think hundreds of their songs since their earlier work deserved a better solo. and solos arent everything but that are like layer cake.
If you have a nice cake with nice filling its nice.
If you have an already ok cake but the filling is for shit, its kinda a shit cake right ? Who wants to eat just sponge ?
I give you points for your "improved" solo being actual music and not just the random, "Look what I can do," crap most shredders spew out. That said, I personally like the "blocky" nature of Kirk's solos. To me it makes the solo sound like a paragraph, with each "block" sounding like a complete sentence. I've heard less "blocky" solos from some jam bands, and, to continue the metaphor, they sounded like run-on sentences.
Kinda to play on your metaphor. In my opinion, Kirk's solo sounds like someone's trying to make an essay in English when they don't have a decent understanding of the language. It comes off very awkward with weird words and punctuation choices.
I don't mind it being blocky.
I think it has a jarring aspect when it transitions and you feel like you're on a new ride each time.
Also, it's way more dark and sinister sounding when you make Slayer noises with your machine instead of adhering to musical rules that completely change the feel of the song from exciting to almost predictable.
I'm glad to hear Kirk just do whatever comes to mind instead of a contrived, well placed solo.
It works great imo
Some of the licks are ok, but the way into the way into the solo is very clumsy and doesn't pay any attention to what the song's doing. I wish someone would push him to properly compose his solos and tell him when something doesn't sound good.
I really enjoyed the style of this video. Loved the theory based reaction and the suggestion at the end. Your solo has a lot of cool elements, but it doesn't feel thrashy enough for the song in itself. The hybrid picking was sick, though.
Really enjoyed the different take on it, but I have to agree it misses some of the drive of the original, which in part is in its simplicity. The new solo sounds like there's not enough bars to give room to the variation. Sounds better on multiple listens but feels a bit all over the place on first hearing. I think it's mostly landing on the root at 4:10, things like that, that kill the thrashy vibe a bit. Resolves it. Gives it a reset. Hampers the drive.
The Solo of Brandon doesn't fit Metallica, but it is great on its own. Gives me John Petrucci and Eric Johnson vibes combined.
Yes. Kinda thought he was just playing Cliffs of Dover at one point!!! Lol.
Kirk's solo is fine! It fits the song well! It's full of energy like the song!
It's random af
@@stuartmoore3857 nowhere near as random as video guy's. His was just nonsense that didn't respect the song.
Wow you really showed him and everyone else who hates it. What a fantastic argument full of logic and great points!
@@JustinLesamiz lmao Metallica didn’t respect the song
@@SnailHatan Go fantasize about Tippi Hedren more!
I think Kirk's solo fit the song perfectly. Different, thrashy and powerful. Your solo is skillfully amazing, but yeah doesn't fit the vibe of the song nearly as much as Kirk's. 10/10 effort though!
WoW! I absolutely loved the way you kicked straight into those bend hard notes! Great example of using some arpeggios that actually fit and balance the intensity of the riff. I’m not a big fan of major finger tapping and pull offs but I felt like it was necessary in this song. Chills bro, well done!
Meh is an understatement, his solos post St Anger have seriously diminished in quality. Very formulaic and basic he sounds like Kerry King soloing
that's an insult to Kerry King tbh...
Bro i feel like most of his solos sound like this lol
I feel like Kirk does a much better job @doing intro solos (Fade to Black, One, Sanitarium, etc.)
True. Only good solos from him since DM are The Day That Never Comes and Spit Out The Bone
He’s still pissed about no solos on St. Anger so now he’s doing crappy solos on purpose
Nah Kerry King wasnt much of a lead player for sure but at least his solo’s were chaotic and random. Kirks is just the same formulaic blues solo we’ve heard a million times. I can improvise something like that on my first try. It needs more theory. I definitely wouldn’t have been pleased with it if it were my song. However it does sound better with the same speed and intensity of Kill Em All.
ua-cam.com/video/GYf8dgzEYx4/v-deo.html
Listen to this and tell me it doesnt.
This made me gain so much fkn respect for u Brandon, u realised Kirks style is actually hard to just be able to kind of play by muscle memory and make stuff sound good still, I just loved how u didn’t overly critique Kirk u really just broke it down and it’s funny how perfectly blocky it is because we all know Kirk didn’t count bars and make segments for each of them ahaha, I think for a dude who made us love Metal for 40 years he’s doing great, dude is 60 with Arthritis and some of the solos off the album are actually wicked!
I think the reason for such poor soloing is that the riffs James came up with don't leave much space for a melodic and well-structured solo. The song basically has like 2 riffs, they are fast and I personally would hate working with them, if I was Kirk. I think it would be a lot better, if the song had an interlude with just chords, arpeggios and in general more room to work. I don't know why they left it as it is. Too basic.
Your exactly right I think and that is alot of the problem,I think it would be better if kirk wrote the riffs to go with his solos like fade to black outro
So it’s the song fault… great
@@adammoffatt3832 it’s not fair to say to say that… A good musician can always write good sounding solos, regardless of the song. That’s just excuses, you can write an awesome solo over one basic shitty repeating riff too.
@@myIceTea Are you a musician? It's not as easy as you think to keep writing solos that are mind blowing most guitarists that didn't end up sucking eventually, died young.I think they are preparing songs they can play over 60 they can't keep playing fight fire and dyers eve kind of songs forever dude ffs.
@@adammoffatt3832 I didn’t say every solo has to be an mind blowing epic. I said awesome good… I guess ur not a guitar fan because then you would know that age isn’t the limiting factor. Steve Vai is 62, Paul Gilbert is 56 and they aren’t a bit sloppy. All the greats from the 80s and 90s are old but they are still going
Who cares about others. Damn, i like this song, solo sits well in the mix!
I find the chromatic double stop bend part a little tricky to play but other than that its a pretty straightforward simple solo to play. I dont mind it, its just a bit repetitive with the bends. Kirk is a bluesy guitar player who mostly stays in the pentatonic box and there's nothing wrong with that. That's all you really need.
Love the intro of your solo and the breakdown of Kirk’s solo. Totally wish his recent solos were different/better or something!
Man people really are critiquing anything and everything Metallica puts out.
Tends to happen when you're the biggest metal band in the world
The solo is horrible
I like the solo a lot
I hope you’re having a sh*tty day as well. Thanks Brandon 🙃
Man I was smoking a cigarette when I started this video, but you've inspired me to get clean. Thanks brother.
Hey man--really like your style and videos. I agree this is an upgraded solo. But constructive input--feels like you went too far from blocky over to busy. I didn't count bars, but suggest that the first half was solid, but the second half seems to go toward some overly melodic/pentatonic forms that start to almost conflict with the song's style. I'd love to hear a revision with a tightened up, more basic metal style authentic to the song in a follow up....
I agree if anything it seemed to move from Hammet-ish to early Satriani-ish
Well said.
When Metallica makes a solo then is that because they liked it, all the people that thinks can better play or play better solo " start a band " en try to do better. People are so fucking silly acomments are
Enter Brandman, not an easy track to solo over being so frenetic in style, but I preferred your version. Fascinating to watch anyway. Glad to see you're suitably aggressive and insulting again,we deserve it. More Brandon, more...
I've seen a couple talented guitarists do this video and in every instance their solo doesn't fit the song as well as the original. Kirk's serves the song better - frantic, a little messy, chaotic - while everyone else seems to want to squeeze in more exotic notes or techniques. Is there an element of laziness in there for his as well? Could it have been better? Sure. But how more melodic could it really have been? Your solo isn't bad at all, just thinking out loud.
The beginning of your solo gave strong Satriani vibes, the middle-ish part was very Cliffs of Dover.
I don’t hear anything wrong with kirks solo. It’s a hell of a lot better than wah wah start to finish. He uses wah just to accent certain little parts, a lot of speedy parts to fit the feel of the song. I like it even better than the overall song itself honestly.
Somehow I think there could've be more pentatonics.... I'm ready for part 2. Suscribed
I mean most of you dont understand what thrash metal is. The point is not to put out some parts of song analyze them then put perfect technique neoclassical solo that you will not be able to perform live. Im not saing im fan of this one, Im not even big Metallica fan but this is total ok and genere standard. All this technique, music theory snobs behind their pcs just dont understand what makes legendary band legendary. And this aproach wont help you. Do you even perform live for any other than your family?
Yours doesn’t fit the track. Kirks serves the song, doesn’t need to be technically fancy for the sake of it. But everyone knows better than Kirk apparently
I love this break down and new solo more than the other guy I watched who just did random sweeps. That being said I would give yours a 7/10. It's a much more fluid solo than Kirk's it just sounds more like Eric Johnson plays Metallica songs.
love the Cliffs of Dover lick thrown in there!
Seems like you found your kind of reaction video that separates you from the other folks on YT that did the same thing, but never really break it down the clip/video, they just always says "wow" and praising the guy for doing a good job. I see Metallica have a great potential to be great for a young band in a local town.
I like how you broke it down and explained how it could be improved upon. I liked your version a lot but it's your style and didn't sound like something kirk would ever do.
LOL, did my last comment inspire you to make his video?
Good work on the solo remake.
I thing a descent followed by an energetic ascent back into the song might have been better. He is correct about the “blockiness”, which could be improved with a few little tweaks. But it’s not a bad solo.
This is foocking gr8 content mate
I was super intrigued by this song, just from the title.
Even more so, from the way that you broke down the solo's structure.
There's kind of an agreement, AND disagreement with you, in my own head. It's blocky, yes, absolutely. However, it does still kind of fit the song, through the rhythm changes, better than it JUST being blocky. So it's like a dang teeter totter going on in my head, that will probably stay there, now lol
With your own solo:
1) you did REALLY awesome with it, for pulling it off in one day. And personally, I love it, overall.
2) it actually has a lot of Kirk Hammett's typical playing style "feel".
3) the bluesy triads that you threw in, didn't fit with the flow of the rhythm...understandable, considering the time frame that you gave yourself for this.
Something that I've now thought of, is that this original solo, was likely, an experimentation of Kirk, pushing his limits, for them to expand further in the writing process (MAYBE).
Thank you for making this video, though. This was super helpful for me, to tap really deep, into my own knowledge and comprehension of the theory and structure side of things. Which I need, because I'm still improving on those things, myself, just to have a more solid foundation with rhythm, in general.
Than you for this 👍👍
Sounds like an early Motorhead solo, and I love Motorhead. ♠️
your solo was pretty great and i liked the cliffs of dovver paaart in it lol
I hope the solo gets so panned that the band decides to change all solos on the album that follow a similar "improvised" approach and give Kirk some homework of actually writing, practicing the ideas until fluid, and THEN focus on feeling and allowing spontaneity, too. I might be wrong but I assume the album isn´t pressed yet.
Too much theory, not enough “feel”.
That’s why Kirk plays in one of the most successful metal bands in history.
I personally dig your solo sir! It very well composed and actually fits in nicely within the backing track. ✊🏻 I prefer it much more than Kirk’s tbh lol
I don’t hate the solo. Thanks for sharing 👍🏻👍🏻🙃🙃
can never expect your solo out of kirk but it was a good one either ways.
good going.
Pretty good solo, and beautiful guitar
They're not trying to be Steve Vai
I think it Matches the song, when I first heard it the other day at work I told everybody to be quiet so I could turn it up it caught my interest and that's what songs should do,,, right?
Hey Brandon, thanks for the constant reminder. I actually got off the cigarettes. Keep spreading the good word! Much love. Some random guy.
Still liked kirks better man.. fits better to the vibe of the song and that's sometimes more important than technicality
Kirks was just random notes and effects, very very lazy
I'm just starting to think maybe that's just kirk's style. Maybe he just really likes that one style of soloing, idk. I wish he expanded his soloing horizon too but what are we gonna do
Yo your solo was sick !
Talk about Kirk anyway to get many views on the channel..no doubt about it....Kirk is a legend of heavy music , without him many musicians don't even exists...come on...i'm tired to hear always the same things about his playing..that's his style man...Kirk rules...
I indeed had a shitty day but this cheered me up😂
A whammy dive would've worked at the end. Pretty cool.
This solo reminds me alot of other Kirk Hammet solos:
Bars 1-2: Master of Puppets
Bars 3-4: Creeping Death
Bars 5-6: Can't put a finger on it but it sounds familiar
Bars 7-8: ???
Bars 9-10: Sounds like it could be from their earlier albums
People disect EVERYTHING nowadays instead of just living in the moment and trying to enjoy whatever you may come across in life. Humanity is dead. We must be like water, not like fire.
Keep it up!!!
So ur kinda saying ur better at solos and Kirk’s solo is trash.. he approached this song according to his artistic expression of it.. too bad some people don’t like it. And ur title is misleading saying everyone hates it. I’m just glad they are still playing considering their age and the band is still intact.
I like the song but i feel like some of the notes and things just go unnessecaerily all over the place aswell as the tones on like stops and stuff
I am a guitar player, I personally loved the solo and was flabbergasted by the hate. I think it fits the song beautifully, maybe I’m on somethin but I love the solo. I definitely loved your iteration of the solo too!
Is Brandon the ONLY mean Canadian? Like a Phoenix, only one can exist at a time?
Fits the song well, sounds fast and chaotic. Perfect for the song
This is Great I came to this Channel because I was searching for videos of other people that don't like Kirk Hammets playing I like your solo much much much better it is A solo. This has provin My Feelings with you in the band Metallica would sound much better
So truthfully I talk a lot of shit but this was a very useful video in terms of figuring out what not to do with a guitar solo section. Hearing you count it out and explain the bars made more sense than oh move here and here this is incorrect because this x and y. I’ve always said the secret to playing good leads is playing good rhythm
Your solo was waaaay worse tbh lol. It didn’t fit the song at all. It’s so annoying seeing hipsters complaining about the solo, not realizing that the solo fits the song perfectly. More technical =\= better. The emotion in the solo is more important. Also, there’s a very small group of people who don’t like the solo, and I have a feeling they like to sip IPAs and listen to “djent” on a regular basis.
Sad but true 😢 his solo is technically better but the original fits better
I am a guitar player, I personally loved the solo and was flabbergasted by the hate. I think it fits the song beautifully, maybe I’m on somethin but I love the solo
Your solo is not trash nor fits the song, not a good attempt for someone who thought they could errogantly do better.
Yea i mean im not a fan of the new singles either but jesus christ hes trying to replace a mid solo with a shit one lol
Thrash not trash
Nice solo bud! It's like you are Kirk in Master of Puppets era!
I don't know why Kirk went the way he did but I heard signs of that direction when the black album was released. When I heard the album's ride the lightning, master of puppets, and justice, I knew the guy had whey more potential. Why it was all pentatonics and wah after that, I will never know. Perhaps money. Load was ok but from reload onwards that was it for me.
I prefer Chuck Schulinder from death.
Nice!
The problem here is “my jazz professor told me off for blocky…”. I love Rick Beato but he has a lot to answer for. Understanding the how doesn’t give you the why.
His was better for me. Kirks energy and the lack of perfect technique is why I like him as a player. I found yours to be a bit over the top. I guess that's why they're in Metallica and we're making videos. I also think its fair to say that 99% of the people who listen to Metallica would never break down and analyze a solo as much as some of us do. Good video and channel. I enjoyed even though I disagree.
Wow! Very interesting solo.
im here because of the guitar world article. Eh they mentioned this video. Hopefully you get a million more views..lol
Solo was actually perfect other than it needed different timing accordingly throughout. Last thing would be on those big build run shred things at the beginning to not start from the absolute base then go to the absolute highest note. It seemed typical or as you say scaling, but with a shred. It seemed like you wanted to get it out or show it off more than you wanted to honor the song. But that's why professional guitarist revise their stuff accordingly. All in all. You solo was perfect, and even like the Black Album, Kirk needed to be encouraged in the small areas to find that everlasting solo or riff that lasts for ages and attacks the best at all times from all sides.
I dig it.
I thought the solo in the song was definitely a bit interesting to say the least, but I didn't think anything was wrong with the solo.
This was great
Missed you 💋
Kirk's solo has way more hook than any of these guys trying to remake the solo. That g string bend you call bullshit is probably something you struggle to play.
you see, the exact reason why i believe the solo is awesome, is precisely because it is compartmentalized....it sounds very structured yet manages to be very chaotic as well....your solo was indeed cool....but it is clear that you my friend, are not Lord Hammet
Nothing wrong with Kirk’s solo. Y’all got nothing got nothing better to do then hate
People say your solo doesn't fit but with a different tone and maybe a jackson it would sound like a justice era solo for sure
I don't hate Kirk's solo, on the contrary I find it perfect....but the super virtuoso guitarists on youtube who criticize him and then show off a terrible solo make me laugh so much
I don't hate it, so it can't be everyone. I trust Metallica to take us where they want us to go. No copyright enforcement, this band is changing the game and they always have.
Thier taking you to HELL..still going? Trusting multimillionaires who gaf less Wether you live or die is wreckless af lol. You have zero critical thinking.
There was nothing wrong with the solo. It's just this moronic generation who think they can do better or be able to tell others to do better.
@@JaggedDagger listen to anything from Kirk 1991 or earlier and then come back and tell me that same bs story..he lost it along time ago.
He can't be worse than this untalented youtube vlogger who pretends they do solo lol.
I really like Brandon's style, but I think for this song keeping it pentatonic with Kirk's chromatic playing is enough. Brandon mentioned he's not too much of a metal player consider that when judging his solo.
Kirk is an absolute metal player and can do a lot better tho looking at for example The Shortest Straw.
I don't like Kirk's solo too much but it sounds a lot more like Metallica xD
Killer solo!
Get off the cigarettes!!! I needed that. Thanks 🙏
I will concur with someone else's comment that (im paraphrasing/editorilazing): "Your solo was really dope on its own merits, but as a solo for this track its gets a 'meh' score of 5.5/10."
Side-by-side comparison I'd give the original a 6.8/10.
Caught a little Cliffs in there
I had no idea Metallica was still together making music. That is the most surprising part of all of this.
There's a very important message for all guitar players in this video; whether beginners or advanced players, it is important to note.. get off the cigarettes.
And Eric Johnson says hi from the cliffs of dover.
Well I like it, as well as about 10 people I know, so NOT everyone hates it.
most people love the solo. it's the metallica hate train that gets views. low hanging fruit.
I'm just glad to see Kirk still ripping man
Kirk hasn't "ripped" since the 80s. All that fame and fortune got in the way of practicing and writing good solos.
@@Trahzy I think he has some great solos after the 80s. Fuel, the day that never comes, the black album has some of his best solos, load and reload have some great bluesy solos on them. Honestly every single album other than st. Anger has some great solos on them. That being said yes there are a few duds but give the guy a break. The entire band and producers chose to use the solos as well not just Kirk. Im sure if they really didn't like them they wouldn't have let it go on the album. Its all subjective man. I personally think his best solos are from AJFA and Master of Puppets but to say he hasn't ripped since the 80s is just a ridiculous statement
@@awguitarroom8033 Totally, the dude's a professional musician at 60 years old and I wish he got to do more writing on the main parts of songs. It feels like they just call him in to shred a solo out of context and then learn the song later. He's the most likeable (and cutest) member of the band who almost never gets the spotlight creatively. Rob also never gets to do his own original bass solos between songs though we know he can sound great. Kirk's solo EP is proof he's a valuable musician with more to share with the world than practicing scales and being an 80s shred guy.
Kind of sounds like when you play the audio from a guitar tab software from the 2000s. Might as well get Dave Mustaine to play their solos if kirk is going to play stuff like that.
Also his solo is not bad probably just needed to lean more into the simplistic raw sound by using a less articulate guitar tone.
I do not think that the actual solo in the song is great and I'm sorry but I liked your's even less, so if the original is a 5/10 your solo is around 2/10, just to clarify, this is probably a taste thing, obviously you are a very talented player, watched your videos a lot, it's just not really something that resonates with me and in my opinion does not really fit the song at all, even less than Kirk's
"just put in something that sounds vaguely like cliffs of dover and see if anyone notices"
I think more than half of the hate is because it is "cool" to hate on kirk because his not Mustaine. Mop its a solid solo.
Your solo has Megadeth's RIP style I think. I like it.
