I love how accessible Metallicas music is. And their riffs are fun to play. They arent trying to outdo anyone. They are enjoying themselves and I love them for that
Agree they are accessible. They started this back in the mid-90’s to the chagrin of their roots and their original fans. With tossing the occasional bone to hopefully satisfy those fans (most of Death Magnetic, a few songs on Hardwired). But they are a totally different band since then. Unfortunately. They are no longer a “big 4” thrash band imo. They have been hard rock pop since then. I will never fault them for making the decision to do this, since it was smart business and made them one of the most profitable bands ever. But it is a huge disappointment to see such a talented band sell out. Even this song, for example, is actually a genius blend. Is teases old school thrash before settling into hard pop, rock, etc. very accessible to a large audience. Great musicians, great businessmen. I just wish they stayed true. But maybe this is what they wanted to be all along? Who knows… PS - I do like the Black album. It has some great songs and bangers. But it was the first sign they were changing directions. The next few albums were just not Metallica anymore imo. Then they tried to balance out their styles to appease more audience. But they enjoy making this music I’m sure, so I’m not mad at them. Just personally disappointed, since I believe they are genius thrash metal writers, and couldve been even more legendary.
this has so much updated motorhead DNA in it. Drums are Phil Taylor, lick is fast eddie. I'm listening to this at low volume as my girl is asleep and the chorus just sounds like, "mashed potatoooes!" somebody tell weird al he should indeed be making food based parody songs and this is his next hit.
Personally I think this is a very well crafted tribute to their old "mentors", like Judas Priest and Motorhead: it's easy to detect some similarities with songs like "Ace of spades" and "Rapid fire", but they were able to elaborate these former ingredients and mix them with their own style.. In addition to this I would like to underline the high quality of both mixing and production, the sound is astounding..
Came here to say that, exactly spot on dude. Totally a Priest vibe on the song with the mid rangy guitars, NWOBH all over this, but it makes sense as they were influenced by these bands, weren't we all? I dig it
I TOTALLY heard Motorhead the first time I listened to it. VERY obvious they are paying tribute to their muses, which I think is awesome and just going to make the music even better.
As a band as old as Metallica, it’s harder and harder to release new material. It will always be compared to the peak of their career and at this point it doesn’t matter. I’m just happy they stay so inspired to write. It’s so funny about the guitar tones because it sounds like they went full circle, back to their Kill Em All sound. I do wish the drums were a bit more natural sounding, at least to my ear.
I think the riffing is Kill 'em All, but the guitar tone reminds me of when they switched over to Mesa's for Lighting/Puppets. In any case, great to hear them still banging it out
"We'll never stop, we'll never quit, cuz we're METALLICA!!" I love the new song! It's fresh, tight and heavy as fuck! Long Live Metallica! Eternal Light!🤘 Their North American stadium tour is kicking off at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford New Jersey, and here's the kicker, the opening acts are Five Finger Death Punch, and freakin' Pantera!. With Zakk Wylde in place of Dime, and Charlie Benante filling in on the drums for Vinny. Once that stadium tour kicks off, metal is going to rule the world again!!! Long Live the Metal!!! 🤘😆
Been a Metallica fan since 1987 when I was 14 years old so to hear a new song come out is exiting & I agree, fantastic that they just dropped it without any notice, I was laid in bed & the email came through, bosh!! Straight to Spotify.
Has a Judas Priest feel to me. Kind of an 80's throwback vibe. I dig it, and it's a thousand times more interesting than anything from those Spotify top 10 lists.
This has a Metallica feel. Go listen to Hit the lights from their first album. Some parts outright copy the old song. If anything this song is a throwback to old Metallica, but with better production. Hearing Iron Maiden in their sound make sense, because new wave was one of their inspirations, Maiden especially.
If you wait long enough everything comes back around again. It gives me Motorhead and Kill 'Em All vibes. Cool as fuck. Love it. The riff at the end after the solo reminds me of Hit the Lights
was on spotify and heard the song, rushed to check who it was. It was Metallica, i almost knock myself out for not recognising it immediately. Its a awesome song, energy abound. great to know Metallica are back to their best. Too perfect? Bollocks, just perfect. If this is their new found vein I cant wait for the rest of the album
I love this Motorhead/NWBHM vibe they have going on here. I wouldn't mind if the whole album had this style. Production is cool too, they kinda found the sound they wanted in Hardwired and I see they're sticking to it. I don't know what James is gonna do with that chorus live though, because damn that's high for him (I'm surprised he's not leaning into his low register for the new songs).
Somehow at 60 James managed to put out his best vocal performance ever and still sounds like James. Also looking back everyone thought Lars’ drums were too perfect. He has always been very swingy especially with his feet, but holy hell, he put the work in and he is rock solid live with this track.
This is the best music channel in the entirety of UA-cam. I don’t say that lightly. How he could be this good with this many subscribers and still somehow fly under the radar and make it seem like we discovered some little niche gem of a club is amazing. He somehow pulls off being massive without a drop of condescension or smugness.
The double bass pattern reminds me of when Rush released One Little Victory, kind of a reminder that eventhough the drummer in the back is getting a little old he can still put out a massive wall of bassdrum.
I am not convinced that Lars has ever been the drummer in the studio while recording any of there albums. Ever seen them live? He sucks and is off beat and seems to just wing it but when they drop an album all of a sudden the drums are on point. Perfect example is AJFA album and puppets.
This has a great feel. It’s like a polished “Kill ‘em All” era song. My first thought was that it reminded me of “Hit The Lights”. I hope the rest of the album rocks like this.
Woe!! NO DOUBT!!! He is AMAZING! Rick is revealing HOW GREAT HE IS!!! i could write a song with HIM but hes sUCH a PRO that im afraid my input would be juvenile to someone like him. After all i believe he was a part of or at least THERE? when Paul Stanley & Desmond Child put together The INCREDIBLE “HEAVENS ON FIRE” 👆🏼👆🏼👆🏼👆🏼👆🏼👆🏼👆🏼 Now i would like to help put together something like that!!
After "No Leaf Clover" was released on S & M and hearing James apply his vocal lessons you could imagine the exponential potential. They're still KILLING EM' ALL 🩸🔨
No Leaf Clover is absolutely one of their most underrated songs! I've seen them play it live and it seems EVERYONE loves it! That song...man...yeah....that song...
James vocals are so dialed in. Love the tightness of this song, it feels more kill ‘em all inspired, but much more refined. Love that they dropped this unannounced
So much Motörhead and Diamond Head energy going through this song. The guitars and vocal structure is very Diamond Head and Lars going full Phil Taylor on those drums.
It totally agree! That was exactly my exact thoughts when I heard this song with the Motörhead and Diamond Head.. that ending of the song, I thought Lars was going to do another false ending round like Phil did on Overkill.
💯 absolutely, sounds like their back to their older style, like their first couple of albums I thought, more so like ride the lightning etc style, it reminds me of their older stuff when I was just a little kid lol 😆 25- 30 yrs ago. Love it.. but makes me feel old haha
This definitely has old school Metallica vibes but also a bit of their newer stuff. I love that you can hear bits of each stage of their journey in this song.
Pleasantly surprised by this new track. Metallica going back to some thrash roots, love it. Feels like they got an energy boost from recent online exposure & they put it down to show they indeed "still got it". Respect.
@@James-hh1lq Agreed. Love Metallica, favourite band for the last 16/17 years, but this isn't really thrash. Metallica has their own distinct sound now, and you're right, it's basically fast Rock. For modern thrash, listen to Warbringer or a band like Havok.
Yeah everyone been saying that it's like their old stuff and I'm a huge fan of their discography, even Deathmagnetic! But this too me, much like Rick here, doesn't sound like Metallica to me. It reminds me more of a Moterhead style like Overkill, mostly because of the drums and the ending. Regardless this is a great song I'm about to learn it right now cuz of this video lol And the wahh pedal dude!!! I'm ded 💀 🤣 😂 😭
Uau! I was on the wheel when I first played this new track and I immediately love it! Soon I was speeding down the road screaming along with James but soon I realised I'm 52 and I should behave myself when driving....gezzzzzzz! This guys still have it! Fan since the 90's!
listening to this song, these words started playing in my mind "you know I m born to lose, when gamblings for fool, but thats the way i like it baby, i dont wanna live forever"
I never heard they tune down live. So it's half a step? I wonder if it is for James' vocals or a different reason. I'm surprised they tune down live and I have never heard and recognized it.
I Love it! I haven't been excited about a Metallica song in a long time, like 30 years. The riffs are great, tempo is great, and James Vocals sound like the James I loved listening to in high school. There's enough edge and grit to his voice, on the brink of yelling but not over doing it, and some great melodies. The whole song has positive energy and feels great! My only criticism is Kirk's solo retreads a lot of familiar licks, but it works for the song. Great analysis as usual Rick.
I’m LOVING the back to thrash new single. Hoping the rest of the record is a mix of that and heavy. Guitars are in your face and bearing and his vocals, although highly edited sound GREAT! He can still hit the notes at almost 60 yrs old! No phoning it in
"Sounds too perfect" hits the nail on the head. I know a lot of people are saying it sounds like their first album, but since the sound is so "perfect" it reminds me more of tunes from Dokken or Def Leppards' first album than the rawness of Kill 'Em All.
It sounds a bit dated.. not like kill m all though. Not sure what to think here.. hope the album is more dark. This sounds too frivolous or something, can't lay my finger on it yet.
I felt exactly the same. Everything feels too perfect, maybe even overedited. The vocals sound too clean and the guitar as well. It sounds a lot like current pop songs without any rawness or authenticity to it. If this is what appeals to the masses so be it, but I feel like the "Metallica" tone is lost
My favorite record of Metallica is Garage Inc. (actually the Punk songs on it). The energy on this album was amazing and so is this new song. Really like it.
Well as much as I would want it to be true thats not even the case, if you watch them play live James alternate picks a lot of their material now and utilizes upstrokes too to "reset" his hand so it does not get tired. Thats just the fact you cant really be playing 1.25x speed all downpicked like they used to do in the early 90's when you are pushing 60 years old.. I'm pretty sure when it comes to downpicking stamina Kirk has got it held down better in the band at the modern era even if he is older than James I guess what I'm saying is that everyone likes to pretend these guys are immune to the effects of aging or something but the reality is different
@Rosterized all that being true, there's a difference between the guy who can't physically play tight downstrokes in studio, and the guy who has to play less downstrokes due to health and stamina care on tour of 2-hour gigs
@@shryggur yeah agree on that, theres very little limits on that in the studio when you can record stuff in short bursts and just put it all together sounding like you just played the entire thing at once
This single is better than what I would expect from Metallica at the band members’ current ages. It’s very fast and very heavy, somewhat reminiscent of 80’s Metallica. I don’t think the song will get much traction, even from outlets that cater to rock, but it’s still a solid track, demonstrating that Metallica “still got it”, even if it’s with a dose of editing.
I don't know about the traction part. This song has been literally inescapable. Every music outlet I keep up with, even the ones that don't cater to rock and metal, have been all over this song.
This song is great. Kill 'Em All NWOBHM-ish riffage in A, blended with the meaty guitar tones of Hardwired and brilliance of Fidelman's great mixing. And James's voice sounds great. I hope the rest of the album has this kind of punch to it.
Fidelman's mixing sounds good, but not great. It sounds stock as hell. I miss when the procuction used to carry a fuck ton of weight, or a screetching guitar sound. It's all mixed to sound pop, not metal. It sounds good, but eh, it's too tame.
I love the song, it's incredible. Can't wait to have this pop-up holistically in a Spotify Metallica playlist and hear it back to-back with other great Metallica songs!
1:29 "Old guys, like me, can't play down-strokes. Unless you're James Hetfield. Then you can." James can do quite a lot, that other people - of any age - can't. No shame, in comparison! 🤘 Damn. The track is definitely a mood. Yesterday, I wasn't sure what to make of it. I heard it today and absolutely loved it. It makes me smile, so that'll do! I don't think there's enough of that kick drum, though. 🤪
@@egcozinon You are indeed mistaken. That's a diamond head song. This song definitely marks a return to their love of Diamond Head and Motorhead smashed together. Everyone seems to hear the Motorhead in it but I mostly hear the Diamond Head. I dig it.
I think this is their "safe" single, it also tightly fits with they renewed success of MOP with a new generation, it makes sense to hear you say that it is too perfect, they choose to go safe to their fans and is a good presentation card for the whole menu that's coming. The x factor on this album: After 29 yrs Hetfield just got divorced unfortunately and that would brings some anthem hidden on this album, because every great piece of music/art comes from dark places.
The riffs remind me of Kill Em All big time. The main riff being in A immediately made me think of the song Hit the Lights. Very fun song to play on guitar!
That song is 100% a tribute to Overkill by Motörhead. Even the drums coming back at the end. Great song. No doubt quantization has been used on the drums and to me they are too compressed, but that`s Greg Fidelman for you.
"Greg Fidelman" is also known as "Greg FIELDS" from "RhinoBucket", a GREAT AC/DC-ish band from the early "90S LA clubs last "hard rock gasp" era... Saw them many times while in Hollywood around '93/94/95 (?)... He walked away from them (or really they did the "split/get out of the contracts/reformed later" routine...) and went into production with a LOT of credits that don't sound like R/B... This DEFINITELY "sounds" similar to R/B but played with double-bass/thrash drums... So that makes it VERY MOTORHEAD-ish...just saying...🤑✌👍🤘
Definitely. Its weird to hear Rick mentions a few times that this doesn't sound like metallica when in bits and pieces it takes you back to kill em all. (Not saying Hardwired doesn't sound metallica though.. I love that album)
Yep. Nailed it. The debate that's going on now though is whether that's a good thing or are they just a parody of themselves? It's what the fans want obviously. Although there'll be no pleasing everyone.
@@vincecotton127 I don't think it's reasonable to expect that from one of the biggest bands in the world in 2022. High production quality is essential. I think though if you imagined this song through a Kill em All quality filter, you'd be pleasantly surprised that it does have that same grit.
Just this brief listen makes me want to listen to the whole album. Probably the best sounding bit of Metallica I've ever heard. Great playing, great mix, and great production.
I love that they didn’t leak the album coming.. I wish they didn’t need to wait 5 months to release a completed piece of work, though. People would still enjoy the album in January.
Great tribute to Motörhead. I’m guessing this track is not indicative of the rest of the record but if it is I’d welcome it. Simpler riffs with great guitar tones will always be appreciated by the masses. I know Friedman amps were used somewhere on this record and it would be a big boon to Dave if that is what the bulk of the tones are. I dig it
If anything, I am happy to see a resurgence of the best era of metal music. Side note, my fav band, Stratovarius, recently released a new album and it sounds so fresh and powerful, something you could hear in their best years (mid 1990s), Metallica doing the same, I feel that this decade will be a good decade for metal music in general.
I stuck with these guys through the load albums, Napster, St. Anger, and I've never regretted it. This song is so sick. Immediate addition to my running playlist. I can feel the juice in my bones when that first "full speed or nothing" hits. Absolute killer.
Great analysis and marvellous to watch a musician break it down on the spot. I thought it’s sounded very early Metallica in places. Surprised Metallica haven’t had this video taken down!
I gotta say this song kicks ass. It has the energy that Metallica had when they covered their favorite songs on Garage Days Re-Revisited back in the 80's and the Garage Inc. album from 1998. I also enjoyed that Kirk didn't use a Wah Wah on the solo.
I have been wishing that Metallica would do an original album with the same vibe as the Garage album covers. I don't care how derivative it is, I wanna hear more!🤘
I know Rick wont read this, but how is it Metallica and their label allow this to stay up👍👍 (AND HOW FANTASTIC THAT IS) when others wont even allow bits of their tracks to be broken down. Great work Rick, Metallica and everyone involved.
"Sounds too perfect" is a good criticism, they edit the hell out of their albums these days... I wish they'd do more of a live take on their album recordings. But I like this track, excited for the album.
That's Metallica’s main problem ever since Fuel. It's boring. Fine song, would never choose to listen to it again on my own volition. Or they go the complete opposite and it sounds like a hunch of garbage cans being haphazardly drummed around in an attempt to create a coherent melody that doesn't work.
Rick the cool thing about Metallica and why this is "Out of the Blue" is because they've made their commitment to their record label left the record label with their Masters and record under "Blackened Recording" This is AWESOME!
Everyone is gonna have their thoughts on what should or shouldn’t have been done and what they do or do t like about it. I personally enjoy this new song. It’s good. Seems a bit simpler than I was expecting. The complexities of an album like “And Justice For All” imo was peak Metallica song creation. That being said I’m thrilled to have this new addition to their still (incredibly) growing song list.
I kinda gave up on wanting deep technically complicated song from them. I'm now just enjoying their songs for what they are (which is still pretty fucking great). They have more in the tank but I'm at this point where enjoying each and every new moments with them is all that matters. They ain't young lmao.
Adding extra measures, and the odd stupid time signature change, wasn't complex, or visionary. It was/is a padded, meadering mess. It's still their last decent record, though. TBA is passable... The rest is a joke!
This song is a total nod to Metallica's roots... a mix of Diamond Head and Motörhead! I brings me back to listening the "Kill 'Em All" LP for the first time in 1983, the Creeping Death single with "Am I Evil/ Blitzkrieg" on the B-side, and The Garage Days Re-revisited EP. Really, this is such a great song on so many levels for a Metallica fan. It's actually the first time in a really long while that I am excited to buy a Metallica album. Perfect single to launch the album.

Check Ola Englund channel... He learns the song in real time... No cuts.
@@ZetroDrummer Are you suggesting Rick faked it with editing?
Figure it out as he listens, probably not. But still, the fact that he can play along so many songs in so many different genres is really on another level. This man is really doing so much for Musicians on so many levels
@@benjaminaristotleboes3157 Exactly. The first one he does is just the top half of a pentatonic. The next one is even less than that. And like you say, Rick is way better then decent...
Who knows…
PS - I do like the Black album.
Yo that KBX band is tight

this has so much updated motorhead DNA in it. Drums are Phil Taylor, lick is fast eddie. I'm listening to this at low volume as my girl is asleep and the chorus just sounds like, "mashed potatoooes!" somebody tell weird al he should indeed be making food based parody songs and this is his next hit.

When I heard those drums it sounded like overkill to me
The first time I listened to it I immediately thought it was Motorhead inspired.
FFS, that's all I can hear now haha
Just read your comment after hearing it as a kind of 'Hit The Lights'/Motorhead mash-up, and commenting as such.
If you played that with a shuffle feel, that'd be a Van Halen riff. Love it.
dead on!
Funny you say that, this song did remind me of Van Halen in parts.
Bit of a tribute perhaps.
You can easily imagine Michael Anthony singing the chorus.
Absolutely...
Yeah I can hear Bomber and Painkiller I guess. Still very much like a Kill’em song with higher production, and heavy effects on vocal.
Came here to say that, exactly spot on dude. Totally a Priest vibe on the song with the mid rangy guitars, NWOBH all over this, but it makes sense as they were influenced by these bands, weren't we all? I dig it
Yeah, that was my first impression as well. Very much a "tribute to our influences" type song.
Diamond Head. It's even in the lyrics...
Drums sound terrible
I think you nailed it.
I think the riffing is Kill 'em All, but the guitar tone reminds me of when they switched over to Mesa's for Lighting/Puppets. In any case, great to hear them still banging it out

Giving me Motorhead vibes , too . What`s not to like ? 🤘
You're the best! Love the Channel!
Has a Judas Priest feel to me. Kind of an 80's throwback vibe. I dig it, and it's a thousand times more interesting than anything from those Spotify top 10 lists.
I hear a lot of Motorhead as well. It's really growing on me. Probably the best Metallica song I've heard in years.
Or Iron Maiden.
Great old school heavy Metal.
Sounded like a cross between Motörhead and Lovebites!
Yeah, that‘s exactly what I thought. Definitely inspired by Motorhead
My first thought upon listening was Motorhead and Annihilator - in particular, King of the Kill. And obviously the connection back to Kill Em All.
Hit The Lights immediately came to mind. Somehow mixed with Overkill (the Motörhead song, not the band). Great stuff
Could easily come off a mid to late 90s Motorhead record.
was on spotify and heard the song, rushed to check who it was. It was Metallica, i almost knock myself out for not recognising it immediately. Its a awesome song, energy abound. great to know Metallica are back to their best. Too perfect? Bollocks, just perfect. If this is their new found vein I cant wait for the rest of the album
Spot on. I loved it. I was hugely impressed with Lars’ performance. I’d like to be able to hear Robert in the mix a little better though.
Oath, now I’m a couple of weeks into the new album and it fucking rocks! I can die in piece now 🎉
I love this Motorhead/NWBHM vibe they have going on here.
Rick with the instant A+ Ted talk with perfect memorization of the riffs
Somehow at 60 James managed to put out his best vocal performance ever and still sounds like James. Also looking back everyone thought Lars’ drums were too perfect. He has always been very swingy especially with his feet, but holy hell, he put the work in and he is rock solid live with this track.
This is the best music channel in the entirety of UA-cam. I don’t say that lightly. How he could be this good with this many subscribers and still somehow fly under the radar and make it seem like we discovered some little niche gem of a club is amazing. He somehow pulls off being massive without a drop of condescension or smugness.

Unless I missed out on a beautiful Gibson. The comment below is a scam. Or I guess ABOVE is a scam. ;)
Yes. Only 3.25 million subs

Sounds more like mid to late 90s Motorhead.
It sounds a bit dated.. not like kill m all though. Not sure what to think here.. hope the album is more dark. This sounds too frivolous or something, can't lay my finger on it yet.
Sounds like "Metallica's greatest hits" squeezed into three and a half minutes. Good on them. I almost felt like I was 14 again for a minute. :-)
Kill em All was basically a garage records, it was just recorded well and sounds great! Lol

Or Kirk Hammett
Well as much as I would want it to be true thats not even the case, if you watch them play live James alternate picks a lot of their material now and utilizes upstrokes too to "reset" his hand so it does not get tired. Thats just the fact you cant really be playing 1.25x speed all downpicked like they used to do in the early 90's when you are pushing 60 years old.. I'm pretty sure when it comes to downpicking stamina Kirk has got it held down better in the band at the modern era even if he is older than James
I guess what I'm saying is that everyone likes to pretend these guys are immune to the effects of aging or something but the reality is different
@Rosterized all that being true, there's a difference between the guy who can't physically play tight downstrokes in studio, and the guy who has to play less downstrokes due to health and stamina care on tour of 2-hour gigs

I concur. An almost carbon copy of Overkill with a million dollar worth of production.
I hear it too, first thing I thought....

That came to my mind right away! 🤘🏼
Yeah, that's exactly what I thought, much more than Kill 'Em All.
I thought of Garage Inc. too! Almost has that Sabbra Cadabra high pitch vocal and similar production style.
Your guitar is a beauty ❤ love the new Talica!
Hit me up now ⬆️🎁
Kirk ran out of solos years ago, it's all just cut and paste of previous ones
I guess this is going to be like the song hardwired is on the hardwired album. An easy, yet groovy opener. I like it a lot.
Thi is Hit the Lights
Me too kill"em all is my favourite album i's so excited about this
I was going to write that 😅. Yeah, that’s a NWOBHM inspired song, their “eternal light” 🤘🏻
Yup, kill em all flashbacks.
It immediately takes me back to their Garage Days vibe.
Aside from how mind blowing this song is, I still can't believe that the Hardwired album is coming up on 7 years old now! lol
Rick, you got me to break one of my UA-cam rules: I don’t watch reaction videos. Generally, the person doing commenting is just some random person. You, however, are the Premier music education and appreciation channel I follow on UA-cam. I watch every video you produce and this is no exception.
@@MrMatthiasSchneider I agree with you both, the whole "reacts to" content is lowest common denominator stuff, I'll never like (thumbs up) any "reacts to" video as the algorithm will probably throw more at me. :)
But I do love Rick, so he gets away with it. :-}
What a great song!
Kill'em All (hit the lights) and motorhead vibes in a refreshing and up to date sound and production
I hope Lars doesn't find out that James put a new Metallica song on UA-cam that people can download for free.
Im pretty sure you have to pay for youtube premium to download it

I’m still mad about Napster too…. Haha
