I would agree american anyway but not British, but hands down the heartbreakers were one of the tightest bands ever even though this is solo album and not the heartbreakers but still killer

Thank you Tom Petty for being part of the soundtrack to my life during happy times and sad. You were more than a face in the crowd. RIP and you're missed greatly.
I’m 21 years old and Tom Petty has always been related, in my mind, to my dad. Alongside the Travelling Willburys and George Harrison, it’s what he always used to play on the car when going on our yearly summer trip. It’s one of those things you remember from a kid that you’ll always remember. I always get very emotional when listening to him, makes me miss those days so much. My dad is still alive, but I already know that Tom’s music will accompany me for the rest of my life.
You should ask your dad about what that song meant back then. Maybe he didn’t know because you were better off than we were but when I started working in Pennsylvania in the 80s unemployment was about 25%. You can see that influence in the song very similar to Billy Joel Allentown song and Bruce Springsteen songs people like them and Tom Petty meant a lot to us and little dying towns like Pottstown Pennsylvania back then. I wish I could’ve told him that 💚
Always been a big fan of Tom petty. I was amazed yesterday to hear his song played on the new GTA 6 trailer. Had to go back and play the album it came from. I forgot about this complete hidden gem. Grew up with my dad listening to this. He's no longer with us any more just like Tom. This hauntingly beautiful song actually made me cry.
Whenever I hear this song I get an almost imponderable, strange feeling inside my chest, I can't explain it. But, I know I like it.. I think it's because it's Tom Petty.
Interesting. For me it represents that point in time where it's neither day or the evening, but somewhere in between- when everything is bathed in gold light and the shadows are long.
It was truly amazing when the giant known as Tom Petty walked the earth. I mourned his loss like I really know him. That's when you know.....what you've done with your life was special. When those who had never seen nor spoken to you.....shed a tear for your existence.
American people consider Tom Petty a national treasure. This is good. This is fair. I can only add that the legacy of this man extend well beyond the USA borders. He sings about universal values, emotions and life situations. Thank you Tom for your music
i was born in 2001, i knew the songs free falling and i wont back down , but didn't really know who they were by until he died, but recently i have been listening to more and more tom petty. R.I.P.
My goodness, I am so incredibly saddened. His music was the soundtrack of my childhood. His show on February 4, 1990 at the Patriot Center in Fairfax, Va was my first concert. I was on my Dad's shoulders when Petty pointed at me and dedicated this song to me saying, "This one's for the little face in the crowd".
My big sister and I saw Tom so many times free at the bandshell in G'ville. I lost her to COVID19 in 2021. I was in shock when Tom died and now again. How many do we have to lose?
I was just saying the same thing to a coworker recently. Been listening to Petty since I was a kid. I'm 43 now and Tom's music has been a part of every stage of my life and I appreciate the songs on a deeper level as time goes by. Glad to hear that I'm not the only one. Thanks for sharing.
It was the first time I've wept over a performer who left us -- and being a fairly new real fan of Tom Petty, it seems strange. But it was not only the shock of his loss, it was the same weekend the year prior that I lost my husband. I first heard this song recently on a utube video of Tom Petty on the David Letterman show from 1989 ...when the song/album came out.. He performed it with the Heartbreakers on that show. It was strange because the band was out on the stage and Tom came out after them and wasn't smiling...and didn't look or smile at the audience. He went and got his guitar and walked to the microphone and the song started and he never had any eye contact with the HB's and he seemed almost estranged from them....it was unusual I thought. I felt a strange vibe. Tried to think why that might be and remembered an interview where some of the band said they were not happy about Tom making the 2 albums and several videos with the Travelling Willburys...which was in 1988 - 89. Some of them said in an interview that they felt left out of it and even Mike Campbell said he would've liked to have been included. Maybe there was some tension briefly between them in 1989. When he finished singing, D.L. came over to Tom and shook his hand and don't remember Tom smiling at all.....it was strange. Throughout the song the camera mostly did close ups of Tom Petty 's face and he looked troubled....the song has got some sadness and almost a depressed feeling to it..... Miss and ❤️ TP. Miss the music they made together.

The greatest American songwriter. Nobody else comes close. Rest in peace Tom
FYI sir Mr. Petty's favorite songwriter was Ray Davies of The Kinks.
"Greatest American songwriter" is a debateable but he was pretty damn good and up there with the very best.

Been having this debate too. Tom Petty is the best Americana sorry. Orbison, Fogerty, Eagles(Dude does not abide) close second?

❤ Miss him so much.
Ever since I picked up guitar as a teenage boy, I have always used this song to tune my guitar to E. I don’t think that will change, ever. RIP Tom. 🙏

One of Tom Petty's best songs. Great music, great performance!
Masterpiece indeed. Chillingly spectacular!
