Tom Petty had such a great sense of humor. It was 1984, my boyfriend (who later became my husband)and I went to the Palomino Club in the San Fernando Valley to see Neil Young. We were in the front at a large long table. Who comes in and sits across from us? Tom Petty. My boyfriend says to him " Oh wow! I never expected to see you here". To which Tom Petty replied, " I never expected to see you here either!" I love this memory so much, as both Tom Petty and my husband are gone now.
Hilarious
What a beautiful memory ❤ I have just 1 videotape with my beautiful mum that passed away at 42 an this tape I have of her live playing tom in the background reminds me so much of her my mum was even the splitting image of Tom ❤ wish we could turn back time x
Epic
Thats brilliant and thank you for sharing. Very sorry to hear your husband passed and hope you're ok x
🙏🙏💚💚
I did what every great aunt does…..introduced my nephew to TP’s music! Years later ….it’s still one of his favorites! And mine too!
I INTRODUCED MY GRANDSON AND HE LOVES IT ❤️
Another hit that as a kid all I needed was a mirror and my air guitar
Tom Petty is timeless. Trends come and go through the years, but back-to-basics rock & roll will always be cool.
This song is powerful. It can heal a wound and repower a person.

"What lies ahead, I have no way of knowing but under my feet the grass is growing." Tom Petty 🔥🔥🔥🎸
Damn.... 40-whatever years later and this still hits my soul.... Thanks for it all Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers

best concert. just graduated high school, our group of friends got a few vans and blankets and saw tom petty. beautiful day, I remember smiling so much I had tears in my eyes the whole time.
Tom Petty was a true southern rocker
"it don't really matter to me, everybody's had to fight to be free" - thank you God for sending us Tom
Amen 🙌🏼
We are certainly fighting to be free at the moment with this stupid lockdown.

I hate that Tom Petty is gone! He was a cool artist! He had that flair about him and his music. His music was like food for the soul. It pierced you right to your core. Petty was a true and unique artist. His music will never die. I thank him for the huge contribution that he made to the music industry. What a legacy that he left! Peace.
Wayyyy cool 😢
He was truly a once-in-a-century kind of person for us all.
@@annettestobb2847 - Yes, he was. Tom was a good type of gritty. I miss him! Peace.
He was stolen away from us too soon, but he could have lived to be 200 and it would have been too soon.
Here here! ✊💙😎
His voice in this is really emotive. Everything about it from the keys to the guitar solo outro is perfect. Spine tingling.
Refugee was the song that drove the stake through the heart of Disco.
Thank god
How so?
Sorry, but Disco still lives on. Everyone- to each their own..don't have to live like a refugee.
It is a great song but there were more popular non-disco songs back then. Pink Floyd''s Another brick in the wall came out the same year and did much better.
@@econ0003 lol that song was disco
If your human, you LOVE Tom Petty. It's that simple people !
Im 66 my favorite of all time greatest ever better than springsteen best ever
Love his music and writing, but i have a hard time with his vocals. So nasaly, almost like he has a constant cold and is about to sneeze at any second.
good to know, noted. Thanks you fellow human, breathing is fun as well
aliens too
You got my vote TOM PETTY ROCS RIP PETTYMAN
No fancy outfits, no barely dressed female dancers parading on stage, no choreographed dance moves, no smoke and mirrors, no autotune, just a man with his guitar, singing his songs that told a story that everyone could relate to, backed by the Heartbreakers. Tom didnt need anything flashy. He was a whole vibe within himself. And his career spanded for 40+ years. He was still selling out arenas. Didn't even have to succumb to playing night clubs. He embraced what true rock n roll was. And his fans were loyal to the end. God i miss this man. 😢
So, so much....
😢💔😢💔
that outfit is kinda fancy lol ;-) totally agreeing with the actual meaning of your point, just wanted to make sure that shirt and belt got some credit :)
Yep, that's why we'd never have another mama Cass. Or even Wilson Philips. Hell or Christopher Cross. It's all image now.
Not godly but AMEN😊
I’m thankful I grew up with this kind of REAL music from REAL talent.
My father was the biggest fan of tom petty and the heartbreakers!! I wished that he could be here and embrace this amazing music.1952-2023
Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers. What a band! And Tom's vocals just knock this one outta the park! RIP Tom we surely do miss you! Gone too early!
It felt that it really was "the day the music died" when we lost him. I was just in complete shock when I found out.
Well said and 1000% true.
"Everybody's had to fight to be free" One of the very best lyrics in rock history. It has so much meaning and truth in many situations in life.
It's sad you have to fight to be free in a free country
@@jackhackman7777 that’s a misinterpretation. You have to fight, metaphorically, for your freedom in all kinds of ways. You’re fighting to be an individual, and the “opponents” are your parents, your community, your peers, your innocence. We all fight this fight; most of us win some, most of us lose some. Growth is struggle.
💯
@@davesistare4250 agreed that's what I meant. It's not simply geopolitics although that's included
Yeah, I think he really planted the flag when he sang that line and it is the aptest expression of rock and roll, in general--and just the way he sings it!... But, the most sententious lyric of the song comes later, in referrence to expriencing unrequited love: "Right now this seems real to you but it's one of those things you gotta feel to be true." The insight surprised me when I first saw it in the lyrics--having not heard it clearly through the songs recording--and told me something of his philosophical nature... You see!! You DON'T have to live like a refugee!
I was a full time carer for my dying mother and I didn't get out of the house very much. Sometimes when I got the night off I'd go out and then catch the bus back home from town. Sitting on the backseat of the bus on that one hour ride back I had this track on repeat literally crying all the way back home. Big hearts reach right into you in tough times. Thank you for this profound piece of music.
Hope all is going well with you. Just wanted to say hello.
Powerful song. All the best brother
I was living in bank machines after my parents death and this song saved my life. Best wishes I totally get it.
@@evelynbaron2004 Amen. 🙏
Wow that’s powerful brother
In 1979 I was a 15 year old black kid in a youth holding facility in El Monte California called Mc Laren Hall. I had never heard of Tom Petty and for the most part, I was hard core into R&B and Funk. I had a roomate who was this really tall black kid who like nothing but Rock. We had a disagreement because I thought Michael Jackson was it. He kept talking about Tom Petty and this Refugee song. I fought it until he played it for me. I was an instant fan until this day, 45 years later and it's still sounds just as amazing
@leetate1963 I have a 1997 guitar made in tom’s playing style its a limited edition even signed by him I have the letter of authenticity that proves it it’s absolutely incredible when you play these songs it sounds just like tom petty.

Yeaa baybi ❤ saludos de argentina
I remember the first time I heard this song, I was in a game room when it came on the jukebox. I was blown away and have been a Tom Petty fan since. Rock on Tom!!!!!
Wow! In Jamaica, our game rooms had all kinds of Moon Eagle, Asteroids, etc but never a juke box! That would've been very cool!
This was the first rock song I remember loving at age 10 and I still love it just as much if not even more now 43 years later. God bless Tom.
BREAKDoWn was the one which made me climb outta my car seat in the 70s and demand for my parents to stop the car because we were at Tom Petty's house.
I still see that house on the East Side and I will forever call it his and play this song because the music is in my soul.
IDGAF if that makes to you because it does to me and if you saw that place, you'd def say yeah... that's Tom's house.
We ❤ Petty and he made our lives so much BETTER!
Thank you!❤
In my opinion, Damn the Torpedoes is one of the greatest albums ever. Full of stand out songs that still sound fresh today.
I had the honor of seeing him live in Saratoga Spring, NY in 2002. It was magical.
By all accounts a genuinely decent guy that kicked ass for decades.

This takes me straight back to 1979, growing up in New Zealand. It is so evocative of the memory that I am actually reliving that point in time: what each each of my five senses was experiencing as that 12 year-old.
Tom was a master rhythm guitarist and lyricist . Absolute legend
Your screen name is a lie promoting racism, bigotry and hate. FIFY.
First time I saw him perform on tv...I was a jr. In H.S. back un 79...I was instantly in love with him and his music
Yeah - I watched him on SNL. Charged right out next day and bought the album. Best investment ever.
I strongly encourage people to go through Tom petty’ albums, with and without the heartbreakers, great music
Amen!! Amen!!
❤️🇺🇸
thanks
I am going to do that.
I do vinyl ... which means I've kept everything, accident of fate. I know the recording history all that; my personal view is that every single one of his producers either worked him to death or ripped him off and he just learned ... how to produce music. That kind of intense commitment to one's project/art is incredible.
I can't believe you're gone. Thank you Tom.
I felt like a refugee when I was homeless and after living a couple years off the streets that feeling of being on the run and in hiding is starting to lift .This song has been helping me along the way since as far back as I can remember.
hope all is well
Well good morning. You're awakening....re-awakening .

RIP the two members of The Heartbreakers
Tom Petty (October 20, 1950 - October 2, 2017), aged 66
Howie Epstein (July 21, 1955 - February 23, 2003), aged 47
You both will always be remembered as legends.
My favorite music of all time. One of a kind. We miss you Tom.
When he was still young, raw, from the streets of Gainesville . Living in Gainesville myself, I know the feeling.
Later in the 80s, it seemed like Tom changed a lot

"Tom where did you come up with these songs ? "
"I don't know....they just came to me" - Tom Petty
1999 Storytellers Tom Petty just off heroin in love telling a lot of fibs and a lot of truth, magic, yeah, camoflage but every real artist like him will say the same thing. Amazing.
Then Bryan Adams said Tom, I'm gonna run to you for inspiration lol!
Basicaly he just listened to The Dead Boys - Ain't it fun duh!
May you rest in peace, Tom Petty. You brought near infinite joy to your fans.
This song always reminded me of my uncle David. Now it’s a very appropriate song for him, because in his retirement years he and his wife sold their beautiful lake home and moved into a trailer court (mobile home) retirement community nearby, even though he is very wealthy. Now I say “Come on David, you don’t have to live like a friggin’ refugee!”
Their record company was going to drop them. They needed a hit song. This is the song that saved their careers.
Mike Campbell's guitar work is absolutely incredible on this song. Perfectly in the pocket, not too much, not too little!
Mike is the ultimate complimentary lead guitarist. And he wrote the music for this one too. He'll never interfere with the song. His solos and fills are crisp, make a suitable statement and get out. Perfect. He's been my favorite for 4 decades.
Mike Campbell is a fuckin genius also Benmont Tench incredible band. Always gobsmacked when they don't get mentioned. Even 4 yrs after Tom's death people are posting covers; this music is here to stay.
@@johnnyclifford9423 Absolutely!!!!!
@@johnnyclifford9423 The one thing you left out was the close friendship between Mike Campbell and Tom Petty ... his lieutenant sometimes? But his musical experience outside the Heartbreakers was prolific and genius as was the studio work of Benmont Tench etc. No need to go on and on. I was therefore mystified when the reaction to Full Moon Fever happened which is amply explained by everybody now. Who cares, brilliant album.
Mike's work in "Running down a dream" is better.
Rest easy Tom. I blasted your tracks daily back in Cameroon, Africa. I denied to live like a refugee.
Released 44 years ago (hit the hot 100 on 1/26/1980 and the top 40 on 2/9/1980) and the song sounds just as new as it was then. This song rips everything. I remember thinking at the time that it would go places and today brings us to tears as many of these old classics do now.
Tom literally gave his life to his music and fans. He was in much pain but still worked when he was able. His body had failed him.
Heard this for the first time on the Rock and Roll station yesterday with my dad on the way to Walmart, and I've been stuck in a constant replay loophole! This song is amazing!!!!
This is such a great great piece of music - the chords, the energy, one of the all time great rock and roll anthems.
His father used to beat him bad
@@TOCC50 How awful. It is so peaceful and nice to be kind.
One of the very best songs ever written and sung by Mr. Petty. Absolutely glorious.
@jameshama02gmail13 Okay. Thanks
Only 66. Died too young. It's been over 4 years, and I'm not really over it. This song coincided with my burgeoning interest in more complicated music when I was about 12 or so. well Tom was a member of your family
This was my introduction to Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers still love them
MTV was a big reason for the burnout of that classic rock roll sound that Tom Petty was able to capture and he explained with the Wilbur’s that writing songs is capturing the moment of emotion with tones that sound popular and that’s why people buy this music it’s popular. I’m try to prove Tom Petty, that the popularity of the sound can do more good than harm. If God will bless me with more music.

Arrived at Ramstein Air Base in September 1980 for the annual Crested Cap NATO exercise. The SP said "Welcome to the Federal Republic of Germany" then turned on the Refugee. It was loud and awesome. This song also was released in 1980.

I was in my mid-teens when Refugee came out. I immediately connected with it - music & lyrics. In my circle of people, nobody neither heard nor liked Petty & song 'Refugee'. It was my anthem then & still is 40 yrs. later.
When I think of Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers..I think of the greats like
Neil Young - Led Zeppelin - Bob Dylan who proved that they were not only capable of continuously making hit songs after hit song but hit records too thru a span of decades.
