In this video I will show you how to pour a new concrete patio slab over an old existing concrete slab. This old concrete slab was structurally sound but the surface was in pretty bad shape. It was also poured in a couple sections and sloped back towards the house. I suggested we pour a new stamped concrete patio slab right over the old concrete slab instead of removing it. The reason for this was there was no reason to remove it. The old slab wasn't all cracked up and settling, it wasn't lifting or heaving in the winter, it just didn't look good and was sloped the wrong way. By pouring a new concrete slab over the old one it made a smaller step up into the garage for this homeowner. The old step up was around 10", now the new step up is close to 6" making it a much easier step for them.
Since some of the new concrete was 2" thick, I decided to bond the new concrete to the old concrete. I used Weld-Crete for this. You just brush it on the entire surface of the old concrete, let it dry, and pour right over it. The new concrete re-activates it and bonds the concrete together. I recommend bonding any concrete over pour like this if it's less than 3" thick.

Haha, thanks.
Did my first concrete slab 3 years ago for a shed for my mother in law. 12' x 20' monolithic pour. Didn't use bull float but ran a straight 2x4 back and forth on top of the forms, waited for the concrete to dry a bit then I mag float the whole floor and gave it a broom finish. Turned out really nice. In a month I'm doing 2 pours for 2 sheds 12'x10' and using the same procedure I used 3 years ago. Everything is air entrained and fiber meshed. Awesome video, keep up the good work.
You're very talented, Mike. I'm sure the homeowner was very pleased.
Thank you!
Thanks for sharing your skills mate!
ya know i just moved out of DFW and I was getting ready to tell this fellow the exact same thing- you care about doing the job right- it shows
Thanks
I never scheduled 5 days a week always leave Friday for catching up. Then if it doesn't rain you can bump up Mondays or go prep. Works for me.
I pour concrete out in Nigeria and I absolutely HATE rain. Luckily, we have a dry season that you're absolutely guaranteed no rain for about 4 months. Its hot and dry and everyone is complaining but I love it 😁😁😁
No rain to worry about makes our jobs a little easier. Thanks for watching!!
I know the feeling with the rain. Also, the customer doesn't always understand that. Great job and love your videos!!!
Thanks Stephen!
Amen to that.
Great video and great job. I know it’s not easy by your self and on top of that setting video equipment. I’ve done so many small construction and large remodeling, when I had my business in the 2000’s. So many times I wanted to setup camera and document nifty projects. It usually went to the wayside once I got going. Kudos to you for getting this done and posting it!
Thanks 👍
Here in central Arizona, instead of rain we have to deal with heat, low humidity and wind most all the time. Curing is critical. I LOVE your videos and have learned a lot from you.
I couldn't help laugh when I saw the concrete guy back up the vehicle close to the client's home and you ran the concrete ramp through the house and out the back door to their yard! Pretty clever! It's obvious the width of the home helped you out! Lol
Nice work sir! You're 100% correct, weather can definitely make or break you in the concrete industry.
Hi Frank, What you working on now?
We are trying to wrap up an outdoor kitchen and 3 smaller stamp jobs before the cold weather sets in for good here in Washington DC. You all got blasted with winter weather didn't you?
Not one and i mean not one UA-cam cideo gives a good practical explanation what to do with concrete stamps on corners of a floor. They all are about walls. Here I finally find an answer before this noob tackles one of the Mrs's new artistic inspirations. Thank you
Thanks
Rain was always a constant battle, I felt like a meteorologist some days...lol Don't you hate when your working your butt off and the homeowner is talking to you? It's like, leave me alone so I can work, geez! LoL
I can relate on some jobs, sometimes they're ok.
Never did concrete work...going to try my hand one slab at a time..👍
Good luck!
Would you ever consider making your own concrete using a cement mixer. If so, what sort of area would you expect to cover at a depth of say 3 inches with two of you on the job. Love your videos, I think you’ve got it just right for beginners and more experienced people, thank you. Nigel
i live in Las Vegas, so rain very rarely is a problem, the ridiculous heat and intense sun is what we have to deal with
Great Job Mike. And well detailed video thanks for this well done ideas!!!!
wow what an amazing result
If it's wet and cold, a 1 percent Calcium gets the job done. 4000 psi with fiber is also my favorite, and I also put wire or rebar to help avoid cracks. Works.
Nicely done.. Looking forward to more concrete stuff from you.
Thank You!
Great video and super informative
That looks amazing!!
Thanks
nicely done sir.
Thank you kindly
Rain is also a big factor in the roofing business. Lots of weekends and long days to make up for rain outs.
Yes, I bet it is. It should only be able to rain at night!
Mike, if the existing patio had a couple coats of paint (100% acrylic paint), would you recommend the removal of that paint first, before applying the concrete bonding agent? I would guess a rougher surface to the existing concrete patio would promote better bonding to the new concrete. If removal of the paint is preferred, do you have a recommendation on how best to do that? My local tool rental shop has a cement grinder, but the more aggressive "accessories" that it comes with is designed to not only remove the paint but also do light leveling. That seems a bit overkill. They don't offer a more mild disk with the cement grinder. Instead, I could rent a floor polisher/ buffer with a cutting removal tool, but those appear to be designed for interior concrete and the video states it is not designed for sidewalks and patios. Thanks for your suggestions.
I lightly grind off the old paint then use the bonding agent. I use a hand grinder and diamond cup wheel. Apply pressure as needed to remove the paint.
Really interesting videos you share - thank you. I had a pad poured for me, and they contractors used a hardning agent to speed up the drying time as they chose a day that was very windy, it rained several times throughout the day, and periodically bright warm sun. They didn't cover the pad during times of rain, and in the end, it destroyed the top layer, there were pitted sections of the pad along the wall side where the rain runoff fell... the concrete cracked approx 25 times in less than 6 weeks, and there was a lot of discolouration, and strange circle patterns in some parts of the pad. They tried grinding and sealing the pad as an attempt to fix it, but it is still quite badly discoloured... I think New Zealand is in need of good quality tradesmen
Getting rained on does suck, that's unfortunate.
Thank you you are helpping me alot for my projects keep the good jop
Thanks Samir!
Enjoying your videos. Exact information that I was looking for.
Excellent video. Quick question you mentioned you would put a link to the isolation strip used on this project, but I don't see it listed. Can you provide? Thanks
Here's the link to the expansion joint foam: amzn.to/3HDOZO8
Very good videos by the way.
Thanks!
-Did the ready-mix company hit you with a ‘short-load’ charge bcz you only needed a yard and a half?
-Yea, I remember the days, as a young man, when we used to look forward to getting rained out! Then we had an excuse to go to the strip club 😛! Becomes a whole different ball game when you finally get serious and own your own business and have some real ‘skin-in-the-game’!
🤜🤛
No small load charge from these guys, I use them every day, probably why.
Mike Day Everything About Concrete
Dang you’re lucky! I get charged 200 for ordering 1 yard
Nice job, friend! What slump did your driver bring you on this pour?
I’m looking to do a small front stoop that was covered in slab. The slab was removed due to age. So it’s rather lumpy and bumpy. I would like to cover the remaining bumpy concrete with new concrete. Your videos have been very helpful to me. I want to do this myself! Wish me luck!! 😀
id rip it out if the concrete underneath is messed up.
Nice job 👍
I wish you were in the Michigan area, the contractor that I hired screwed my backyard patio up. Poured the concrete and dried up too quick for him to level everything off. Now it’s all dried up with clumps and uneven concrete. He also stopped answering my calls to finish the job. Sigh
I hope you didn't pay him everything yet. Sounds like a demo and re-do or maybe grind and overlay it.
Mike Day Everything About Concrete unfortunately I did pay in full I actually paid him half but the day of cement pouring the cement truck was a separate company and I Pretty much paid the other half to the truck driver smh. Would I be able to do the same thing you did On uneven/lumpy concrete?
Really great videos, thank you so much for providing this information. I'm raising a garage floor- 9 x 14 feet and 4 inches deep at the front, 3 inches at the back. Should I use Iso-strip against the concrete base wall or let it bond? New to this so want to make sure I get it right. I'm planning on using wire and bonding agent too. Really grateful for any advice. TIA.
Not that experience in concrete bidding out a job with a concrete poor over an old slab but it is bigger. You mentioned it more likely to crack that way is there a solution! Besides jack hammering it out
So cal no rain.......pour pour pour baby
Got to love that weather!
I don’t pour concrete but I work as a handyman. I feel bad when I am rescheduling but I hope the customer understands.
love your vids man! Question if you don't mind if I pick your brain. I have a 20x20 slab in my pool yard, the concrete is around 15 years old and in great shape. Relief cuts were made about a week after they poured it years ago and there are no visible cracks. The surface was a fine broom finish, i have painted it once 3 years back to make it look fresh. None of that paint has peeled. The problem is this pad that I am referring to, has an adjacent concrete slab poured up to it on one side, however that pad is 1.5 inches above this pad, is it an awful idea to pour a slab of 1.5 inches on this to make them even? Hoping with the situation that the existing pads' condition is so great, that it might work out? If so what type of prep would you suggest me to do before the pour? do I need to remove the paint? also what type concrete; strength and or additive would I order? I am in upstate NY and have pretty harsh winters, thanks for any advice!!
Can you pour lesser than 2 inches high? or it has to be more than 2 or 3 or 4 inches high?
I am about to pour cement over an existing 12x30 slab (original slab is probably 4 inches thick-not cracked-27 years old). Going to pour another 4 1/2" high at house and slope down to 3 1/2" at outside edge (free standing back porch going on it, 6x6 posts so not an outdoor room or anything. I like the bonding agent and rebar, my question is do you need plastic between the two slabs? Any thoughts on adding some fiber to the mix?
I had someone pour me a patio and it has sloping dips in different parts ot also slope away from the house but when I sit chairs there and sit in them I lean forward can I level it by adding the square flag stones and mortar I don't know how to work with concrete but I rather try myself than pay someone again and get a messed up job I'm so aggravated by this I really need help
I suppose you could mortar and flagstone over it if you're capable.
Hey Mike, my name is David Mueller with Dave’s Concrete and Masonry. Thanks so much for your videos you have been a great help to me. I grew up in the concrete and masonry trade with my father as my teacher, so I have been doing this for quite a while, and Yes, I definitely can relate to the weather pushing you around. I am prepping and pouring a 35 x 15 patio, which has a roughly 10 x 10 existing concrete patio inside the area. I was going to put a bonding agent down and then a rebar mat 1 foot on center, what would you recommend?
Can you add new concrete over old concrete on a door frame so I can screw the hinges back into it? Someone damaged our frame and it's not wood. Not sure how to go about fixing it. Thanks
I started my own business to work my own hours...I didn't realize it would be every hour.
Yes, that's the price we pay to be successful! Got to love it.
👍
Arizona rain is never a factor in fact we like the time off when it rains !! lol
What is the cost to have this done over my 12 x 30 porch slab?
great no nonsense advice. What is the mix (including microfibres)? I'm doing 4 square metres ranging from 40mm to 90mm thick. I've read 1 cement, 3 stone(less than 10m) and 2 sand(triple washed?) amount of fibres? Thanks
thanks
You're welcome!
Here in central PA that 30% chance of rain gets ya Everytime. U forgot ur s tool to finish out the block lines back 2 the wall.
i wish you were in Dallas TX, i would sooo ask for your services for a small patio along w/ the stamping...epic
i have a patio im trying to get done asap. I already cleaned the patio. Just looking for someone to do all the concrete work...
Sorry Davin, I hope you find someone.
dunno if anyone gives a damn but if you're stoned like me atm then you can watch pretty much all the latest movies on Instaflixxer. Have been watching with my girlfriend for the last few days xD
@Theodore Ezequiel Definitely, I have been using instaflixxer for since november myself :)
I hope the water rain runs away from the walls fine. I got mine done. And they made a mistake, now when it rains the water accumulates near the wall. And its very bad. I don't know how to fix this now.
My underload charges are crazy , maybe cuz I'm just getting started, I think the concrete company times you while their trucks are there, is that how it works Mike ?
Sean, they're all a little different. I've been doing this so long and have really good relationships with the dispatchers, they don't usually charge me a small load charge. But I do pour 1000's of yards a year with them. That helps.
hey Mike, nice work, BTW is your straight edge aluminum or wood, which do you think is best ?
Rain aways gets our schedule all messed up.
No doubt, now we're dealing with snow and below freezing temps.
Yup. Tis the season.
Weld-crete vs Muriatic Acid. I've heard to get the new to bond with the old, you can use Muriatic and then immediately throw on the new concrete. What is your opinion on the process? Have you ever tried it with the acid?
Mike, looking for information. I want to Raise the floor in my house 68 yrs old, it had wood floors over the concrete base slats glued down with tar the tar scrapes up but leaves it in the pours of the old concrete do i have to sand blast this out or can I do the bonding agent material over the old concrete and still get a good bond.
If you pour 3" thick or more, you can just pour right over it. 1.5" to 3" just scrape off what you can and use bonding agent, then pour.
Why use the Weld Crete? What does it do? Just looks like paint.
It's a bonding agent
Mike That's a great look! Are you on the hook for anything if the previous settling (compaction?) continues and your work is impacted?
This particular one didn't have any settling issues. If there is a job that does, I bring that up to the customer, explain the possible outcome clearly and if they decide to go ahead, I cover myself in the proposal so it can't come back to haunt me.
Wonder if we can use this technique over our 13 year old driveway and stamp it. Would the weight of the cars crack the new concrete over time? Wonderful video.
you need too check the air pressure in the drive way first
does bonding a concrete slab over an old slab of concrete cause cracking due to differences in expansion and contraction at different rates of the two slabs?
It could but not really too much trouble if you bond them together.
Hi Mike. I have a garage built in a concrete slab. The garage is 30 feet long and 16 feet wide. The city wants a concrete foundation put in if I convert the garage to a garden suite. Is there a way to put a foundation under an existing slab? Thank you. Gary Schneider.
It would probably be more expensive than just doing it from scratch. I'd say no but depends on what the city specs as a "foundation".
how do you make forms for a concrete ramp if it's sitting on concrete?
I usually use Tapcon screws to secure the forms to the existing concrete.
@@MikeDayConcrete thank you for the reply. really appreciate it.
Thanks for the info. I have a very stable patio but want to extend it and overpour so the texture will match. Do you feel this is the best method as I've have a few concrete folks say they dowel the current slab which has post tension wires in it because it was poured and connected as part of the house slab. I don't feel comfortable with doweling from what I've read. Also, do you not trip the isostrip level with the concrete or does it have to stick above the poured concrete? Thanks.
Iso strip can be level, yes. I generally dowel into existing slabs when I extend them. Your choice though.
What did that job cost?
How or where do you get rid of left over concrete? and where do the drivers wash off in residential jobs? We’ve been using wheelbarrows for wash offs
Same here, wheelbarrow to wash in. They had a debris pile I could dump the extra in from the slab.
Hey Mike great video, how thin can this be done, want to do a project but can't go to high on it,couple months old do I need the bond or not?
Mike how can i receach to you about questions on resurfacing concrete on a old sidewalk appreciate any feedback thanks
I am using to bond new concrete with concrete slab. Once I apply Weld-Crete to the old surface how long do I have to pour in a new concrete..
Im looking for some guidance. My garage wall came off the foundation and we have to remove the garage... the concrete is cracked and broken in several spots, to remove the concrete is over $3k . What i want to know is if i can break up the slab into smaller pieces, add 8" of compacted fill dirt over it then pour a new 4" slab over the top if the old?
It sounds like you could as long as the existing slab and sub-grade hasn't settled in the past. If it has then you still may have settling issues, better to remove and fix that so no problems in the future.
Pouring in the rain happens when your boss thinks he’s a weatherman!!😡 48 years pouring, years ago, me and my crew had a slogan,” when it rains,we pour”!🤣
I don’t pour concrete anymore I lay block for the local here in buffalo... let me just say we’ve build and broken don scaffolding in blizzards, to get jobs done. Yet if it rains you’re screwed lol
Yea, rain is not our friend when we're pouring concrete.
is it ok to cover with plastic sheeting when done ?
You could of patched that foundation up as a courtesy its would of been cool points on you and the video.
I am going back to patch it.
Our Contractor did a horrible job on a slab for the shed. Any ideas how to fix it? He used boulders and mulch as a fill. And when the forms came off, you can see the gaps under the slab. Do you have an email where I can send you pictures?
daysconcretefloors@hotmail.com
Great job where are you out of?I'm in twin cities Minnesota in going on my own for 2020 I'm going to small jobs like this block stuff.
He lives in Maine..
Yea, I'm in Maine. About an hour north of Portland.
Peggy Patton I'm in Robbinsdale, where in the twin cities are you at?
Hi Mike, with that front lip only 2 inches, is there any chance it might crack considering they drive the lawnmower up on that lip? I was considering to have someone pour a thin (1-2 inch) coat over existing pool decking (4 inch concrete with the pebbles exposed) and was told that they would not want to do that due to potential cracking of the stamped concrete. is that a valid concern?
Hey Mike, if that slab had decent sized cracks in it what should you use to seal them/fix them before you pour.
I'd fill with sand, then lay a thin layer of styrofoam over the slab 1/4" or 1/2", then pour the new concrete on top of that.
@@MikeDayConcrete How about better leave the new concrete to fill the cracks?
Where can i find the iso strip? Can any foam roll be used?
I love this idea, im looking into redoing my front patio with a cappuccino color and a nutmeg color as the released agent but i have no idea where i can buy these colors?? Do u recommend a website ?? TIA
Karen Fortin check out solomon colors.
You can buy all your colors from Marshalltown. Use the link in the description of the video. It's under their decorative concrete tab.
Thank yo for the reply, I will look into it. 👍
great video. I am wondering. I'm going to pour a slab (for my house) in two stages. I want to pour the slab then install all the pex pipes for radiant floor heating, then pour the final two inches over it. Should I use that bonding agent, on a slab that was only poured a few days before?
Why would you want to pour it in 2 pours. We've done 1000's of radiant floors and never done that way?
You need to hurry whit the foam strip concrete truck just shouup
When it rains we pour lol
What states are you in?
wha's the
thickness of this sir
About 3" on this one.
Where to find those stamps ? I really need to use them.
Marshalltown.com
That mix design is a wonderful mix. Never had a failed pour with that. Good on you!
We have a saying, " when it rains we pour" usually walls at that time , but Mother Nature is fickel
Gosh that woman looks annoying!
PULL that mesh up! (I can hear my stepdad yelling at me. It does no good if it is on the bottom of the pour.)
