When it came out it was the best graphics at the time. I was shocked and just stared at the screen without even playing it. This was still one of the best gaming experiences i ever had.

In 1998, my 16 year old self was playing Resident Evil in my parent’s dark basement on the original PlayStation. I’m furious with my 16 year old self for not having broader horizons in a direct attempt at being exposed to a game such as this one. Why haven’t I heard of this game until 2021?

What's so hard about figuring out that you need to get the flowers (the carnations, not the daisies) from the florist by trading her a packet of gum because she wanted to get the taste of the bad tuna sandwich out of her mouth so you can give them the old man sitting at the coffee shop who will sneeze so the pigeon sitting next to him will get scared and fly away so the cat will chase them and knock over the sign for the hat shop so the the hatter comes out to fix it and you can sneak into his shop and rearrange the trilbies in the window which will send the signal to the private detective across the street who's watching the shop to come out of his car and plant a bug in the hat shop so you can go to his car so you can take the parking brake off causing it to roll backwards and knock the fire hydrant over so you can get to manhole to the sewer you can open with the crowbar you got at the beginning game? You *did* pick up the crowbar, didn't you?
I put off beating this game for so long, but when I did I felt so sad that it was over. This is one of the best games I've ever played. Finally, I felt invested in these characters and their journey. The setting is gorgeous and intriguing and the humor is so subtle and effective. I love this game.
Grim Fandango introduced me to Jazz when I was six years old. Man am I glad my dad let me play it at that age. I might be a good for nothing gamer today, but Grim Fandango is my absolute favourite game of them all. I even pre-ordered the Collector's Edition off of LimitedRunGames, but alas the shipping has taken over a year and I'm starting to wonder if I'll ever get my hands on it 😥.

i've found this game through a comic called "boneheads" and watched a 4 hour playthrough, though i've baisiclly spoiled myself i still kinda wanna play it cause it just looks so fun ^^ but it requires quite alot of money- (im from the phillipines, and 1 dollar = 50 pesos) but if i was old enough i'd definetly buy this game

Somebody gave me a copy of this game in 1998 when I was 19. I loved playing it and always wished I could play it again someday. Had a blast revisiting it years later on the PS4. There's no other game like it.
You forgot just two things: The beautiful architecture and designs in the game are Art-Deco styles spanning from the 1900s all the way trough the 1940s, and the narrative uses a lot of 1930s-1940s cinema Noir storytelling. Thank you for this amazing video of an amazing game.

If this game came out today and many people played it today, everyone would have spoiled everything that happens in the game. This is one of the many reasons that I love this game, it’s underrated quality leads me to experience the game with fresh eyes without having its shocking twists and reveals be spoiled by some asshole in the comments section. The story is so original and expertly written, that I don’t know how they managed to do it. The characters are layered and compelling, the gameplay is easy and challenging with its clever puzzles, the art style is phenomenal, and the soundtrack is top-notch and fantastic. To put it simply, this game is an underrated, original, creative masterpiece that is worth every penny.
The bullshit you're talked about totally resonated with me! I'm a huge Lucasfilm Games/Arts fan and Grim Fandango always sticked out for me in particular. Ok, Monkey Island as well.. Tim Schäfer is a genius and I'm more than thankful growing up with games like this. There are more really great adventures out there, like Zork Nemesis/ZGI or Syberia, but the storytelling of Schäfers games is unmatched. Thanks for this video. You have spoken from my soul. And yes, the soundtrack is absolutely fantastic and I love how much importance they gave it (in all their games). Lucas Arts forever!

The best praise I can give this game is: It held my attention even when I was 10 or so and watching Yogscast Duncan play it, and I absolutely loved it. Probably should watch a playthrough of it again, or play it myself, now that i'm likely to actually understand more of the story.

I got stuck doing the door tumbler/scythe bit back in 2002 and it gutted me I couldn’t get any further. Gonna install it again and finally complete it 21 years later 💪
I found these games pretty late when they were free on PlayStation a couple years back and I absolutely loved them since my entire childhood consisted of Humongous Entertainment games. I was so excited to find that it was like putt putt HARD MODE. Such amazing games I wish they were appreciated more.
This game is a labor of love and it shows. The remastered version was my first full play through on my gaming channel (DJ MK Off the Air) back in 2018. Watching this video makes me want to play it again. Grim Fandango has one of those worlds you want to explore cautiously yet deeply. The lore’s impressive!

Just finished it. After knowing about it since 98 when it launched I finally got to play it and wow its amazing. I played all the other lucasarts adventure games but I never got around to playing it. Amazing.
My only criticism of this game is the frustratingly antiquated puzzles and lack of direction the game gives you. And the poor UI for selecting items. But beside all that, the game is a masterpiece of it's time and still is to this day for all the reasons you listed. I would argue that it was very ahead of it's time and paved the way to a lot of the great story telling within modern games today.

Yeah, I agree with ya... Grim Fandango was mostly pretty good, but there were a few puzzles here and there where I was like, "How the fuck was I supposed to know you had to do that" hahaha
They were ridiculous from the get go. That's basically the hallmark of Sierra adventures. And there were always better alternatives, from which Sierra learned too. The puzzles actually became pretty sane across most games by mid 90s. Granted now everyone talks about it that way since in the late 90s the future Valve writer and back then editor of Old Man Murray, Eric Walpaw, wrote an article "what killed adventure games". In there he speaks of the cat hair disguise puzzle in Gabriel Knight 3 as an example. This opinion became part of Internet folklore that people absorb by osmosis and morphed into a perceived fact due to repetition. But that puzzle in itself was only a symptom. Sierra was bought by some random investors, who in turn committed fraud and this drained the money from otherwise successful company. Almost everyone had to be fired. Skelton team finished the game to get some money out of it. They hated this particular puzzle too, it was quickly put together out of demo assets they already had and was slated to be replaced, but there was no time left for that. This was not representative of anything but decay within one company and I think Eric was plain wrong. What happened was Star Wars and various gaming trends. I could elaborate if desired.

The article incorrectly attributes the design of bad puzzle to Jane Jensen, but Steven Hill later took responsibility for taking out another puzzle designed by Jane and putting this one in its place because of budget, workforce and time constraints - but Eric couldn't have known that at the time of writing. Lucas Arts had a recurring management failure, they let projects be developed and simmer, and then cancel them in late stages, or require projects to steer into an artistically unsustainable direction which would eventually lead to obviously bad product and thus cancellation. Projects typically went through multiple retoolings before being cancelled. 1997-2005 was also when the studio had to produce the Star Wars tie-ins and thus other projects were put on the back-burner - it's almost a miracle Grim Fandango and Monkey Island 4 got made at all. Even after Star Wars, every couple years, the God and Namesake himself would descend on the studio and proclaim, that this or that needs to be done, followed by a huge line of cancellations, shelvings, and key creative personnell loss, as of course he surrounded himself by sycophants that cared more about appearing to execute his desires without questioning than about running a healthy creative production business.
I'm on my moms PC and not logged into my profile but I just had to comment anyways lol. I used to play the demo of this game back in the day off of a PC Gamer demo disc. I never experienced the full game and looking back that's a shame and something i shall have to rectify at some point. However the demo alone was enough to imprint this game deep in my memories and look it up now to see others opinions on it. The whole adventure game thing was on the way out around that time. Half Life and other first person games along with much more powerful graphics cards were just around the corner. Grim Fandango beat the knock out punch just in time and now exists as a testament to a bygone era of gaming!

I'm going to sound like a complete fucking phillistine, but I got really bored of Grim Fandango after a couple of hours. And this is after waiting years and years to be able to play it - never had it as a kid and it was extremely difficult to run on modern systems. I was so hyped, and then so disappointed. But I don't think this is any fault of the game itself.

Grim Fandago is a classic. Blew my lid when I first played it. It does a lot of things right and it's atmosphere is absolutely stellar.

Even though I’m almost 12 years old, I LOVE adventure games! Even though it is not as popular now. I hope they become more popular someday.

I used to love adventure games but somewhere along the way, the genre got a little ridiculous on how you solve puzzles.

Yeah, I agree with ya... Grim Fandango was mostly pretty good, but there were a few puzzles here and there where I was like, "How the fuck was I supposed to know you had to do that" hahaha
They were ridiculous from the get go. That's basically the hallmark of Sierra adventures. And there were always better alternatives, from which Sierra learned too. The puzzles actually became pretty sane across most games by mid 90s.
Granted now everyone talks about it that way since in the late 90s the future Valve writer and back then editor of Old Man Murray, Eric Walpaw, wrote an article "what killed adventure games". In there he speaks of the cat hair disguise puzzle in Gabriel Knight 3 as an example. This opinion became part of Internet folklore that people absorb by osmosis and morphed into a perceived fact due to repetition.
But that puzzle in itself was only a symptom. Sierra was bought by some random investors, who in turn committed fraud and this drained the money from otherwise successful company. Almost everyone had to be fired. Skelton team finished the game to get some money out of it. They hated this particular puzzle too, it was quickly put together out of demo assets they already had and was slated to be replaced, but there was no time left for that.
This was not representative of anything but decay within one company and I think Eric was plain wrong.
What happened was Star Wars and various gaming trends. I could elaborate if desired.

I'd have to agree, adventure games (or at least major adventure game studios) committed suicide.
The article incorrectly attributes the design of bad puzzle to Jane Jensen, but Steven Hill later took responsibility for taking out another puzzle designed by Jane and putting this one in its place because of budget, workforce and time constraints - but Eric couldn't have known that at the time of writing.
Lucas Arts had a recurring management failure, they let projects be developed and simmer, and then cancel them in late stages, or require projects to steer into an artistically unsustainable direction which would eventually lead to obviously bad product and thus cancellation. Projects typically went through multiple retoolings before being cancelled. 1997-2005 was also when the studio had to produce the Star Wars tie-ins and thus other projects were put on the back-burner - it's almost a miracle Grim Fandango and Monkey Island 4 got made at all. Even after Star Wars, every couple years, the God and Namesake himself would descend on the studio and proclaim, that this or that needs to be done, followed by a huge line of cancellations, shelvings, and key creative personnell loss, as of course he surrounded himself by sycophants that cared more about appearing to execute his desires without questioning than about running a healthy creative production business.

Point and click adventures are a lost art
I'm on my moms PC and not logged into my profile but I just had to comment anyways lol. I used to play the demo of this game back in the day off of a PC Gamer demo disc. I never experienced the full game and looking back that's a shame and something i shall have to rectify at some point. However the demo alone was enough to imprint this game deep in my memories and look it up now to see others opinions on it. The whole adventure game thing was on the way out around that time. Half Life and other first person games along with much more powerful graphics cards were just around the corner. Grim Fandango beat the knock out punch just in time and now exists as a testament to a bygone era of gaming!

I'm from the fan base, as my avatar can show you ;) Loved this game so much. i have both the OST (the original one, ripped from the game CD, that I searched for 10 years in the 2000's and the remake of it)
same ! or near enough, i was definitely a fan of not only the game but the genre at that time. I got the demo in my subscription to pcgamer a few months before i assume when the game came out and I fell in love. perhaps my favorite game of all time and definitly the best adventure point and click of all time in my opinion. the genre has so many great titles though this included

I played it back in 1998 with my brother and a friend, we took turns while trying to solve the puzzles - I fully know the "bulshit" you're speaking of. Cheers for the good video man!

I'm going to sound like a complete fucking phillistine, but I got really bored of Grim Fandango after a couple of hours. And this is after waiting years and years to be able to play it - never had it as a kid and it was extremely difficult to run on modern systems. I was so hyped, and then so disappointed. But I don't think this is any fault of the game itself.
Yeah, I can totally dig how it wouldn't be everybody's vibe tbh! That's like me with the Witcher 3... I feel like such pleb everytime I say it, but... I could just never get into that game haha
yeah, definitely meaning to give the Witcher another chance one of these days... hopefully soon hahah

Worth playing for someone who's NOT into the genre (I like arcade games)? Story that good? I have (on purpose) looked at nothing from the game to not spoil it. It's now on Switch and the portability is interesting to me. Worth a buy?

yes, a remake with an actually logical puzzles. i found the game almost unplayable without a wallkthough
I got the remaster. And I used a guide the whole way. Idk how people beat these games without help
