yeah motion sickness topic was huge in Japan in early 2000s. there's even a theory that SMT had become 3rd person because of that, although there is first person camera mode in Nocturne after you completed game once.

Which is funny, considering how stubborn the Japanese seem to be about adding actual motion sickness fixes (decent FOV options, effect disabling, etc.) to games nowadays. Elden Ring's chromatic aberration gives me a headache.
Really does feel like a bunch of firsts for the SMT team with this one. The switch from first person to third person in 3D, the hammy voice acting, the art style. I can see how Nocturne and DDS both spawned out of the work in this game. Sure glad they did a test run first

It'd be interesting to see the Atlus of today give this concept another pass; I feel like we still don't have a lot of games that do first person melee combat well (the first Chronicles of Riddick game is still probably the best title in that regard, which is telling), so I'd be curious to see what they do with it now that there's more of an industry standard on how to handle the perspective.
Maken X is such a gem of a game to me. I adore it, but agree with the control problems. I'm gonna watch your video now and see if I was wrong all along :)
That oddly shaped jet briefly shown is actually based on a real-life plane, the NASA "Super Guppy" used to transport rockets and other absurdly large cargo between facilities.
I played Maken Shao at a young age, and it has stuck to my mind ever since. Even if the translation was slightly shoddy something about the way how the Hakke got weird body-horror powers while the Fukenshi had elemental powers while also giving up some part of themselves... something about that resonated, as well as all the different endings the game had depending on what choices you made. There was just a MOOD to it that few other games had at the time, even if the controls were hella clunky I had to keep going to see what it all lead up to. Wished for the longest time it could get a sequel, but I guess that Atlus learned what their wheelhouse should be... though now I wish we could at least get some more bizarro transformations in our RPG's ala Digital Devil Saga.

I've got the PS2 version, but I've never played it. I found it used in a bargain bin at my usual shop, and got it for my jrpg collection despite the bad reviews it had online. Anyway, I didn't even pay for it, since the shop owner let me have it for free for being a good client.
In my mind, it was to the SMT franchise what Dirge of Cerberus (which I also own but never played, also due to even worse reviews) was to Final Fantasy, a failed attempt at branching in a different genre. I'm gonna watch your video now and see if I was wrong all along :)
That oddly shaped jet briefly shown is actually based on a real-life plane, the NASA "Super Guppy" used to transport rockets and other absurdly large cargo between facilities.
Nasha is deception in Hebrew. You're part of the deception
Technically I think the X in Maken X is supposed to be "Cross" which would make the games title directly translate to Demon Sword Cross
6:20 screams WHAT
Hee ho!
Very nice, glad to have some context for a game/series I've been adjacent to but dont have time to play.
I love how Kei just keeps asking Maken questions and just disregarding it's answers.
Maken X always had a King’s Field vibe to it. Never knew there was another version on PS2! Might have to check it out!
Gonna have to rewatch, got lost in the sound of Dungeon Chill's smooth af voice
I heard Ryan Drummond and Lani Minella in those cutscenes! All we need now is the late Deem Bristow and we've got a Dreamcast trifecta!
Dungeon Chill and SMT? It's a good day.
I finally live to see the day that Dungeon Chill touches SMT games. Today is a good day to me.
Yeah I love that SEGA Dreamcast summer aesthetic too. Gets me melancholic though. I always think of roads not travelled when I see them again
OH fuck yes !! New video ! I jyst watched the grim fandango vid !!! I be eating good !
8:04 The animations being synced to the beat really get me
I played Maken Shao at a young age, and it has stuck to my mind ever since. Wished for the longest time it could get a sequel, but I guess that Atlus learned what their wheelhouse should be... though now I wish we could at least get some more bizarro transformations in our RPG's ala Digital Devil Saga.
ohhhh baby....i love the endorphins i get when i see a fresh Dungeon Chill video. Not gonna lie i am going to LOSE MY MIND when you drop your retrospective on Metaphor: ReFantazio in 2049
Dude never in my wildest dream did I imagine you emulating an obscure megaten game. Poggers and please do more megaten videos.
4:04 man... That sounds really... Ominously real.
Maken used to be one my teen years favorites, played and I think I did all endings. Fever dream doesn't even describe the most esoteric ones...
You should look for LaPlace no Ma, a dungeon crawler where you make a party and go hunter ghosts. I would love a video about it. Great job as always.
Nice video, at the very least you helped me realize my speakers are reversed. I won't say how long it's been like that though.
That Schitt's Creek reference was on point lmao
Another banger, great job Dungeon Chill
I cannot believe you got to this one before Marsh 😮
I remember playing this game back in the day. I think I still have my original copy… wasn’t too impressed back in the day but might be fun to revisit
I’m loving all of the games/titles you’ve been picking lately. This is another game I’ve been curious about so looking forward to watching this.
Crazy that I've never heard of this game before! Pretty neat stuff. Makes me want to keep playing Nocturne.
Oh crap. I’ve been hooked on Marsh’s SMT stuff lately and thought this was one of his vids at first. Whoops 😅 Still a damn good video Chill 👍
"SMT's strange spinoff"
Do you have any idea how little that narrows it down?
Dungeon Chill and Grimbeard are the best channels on YT. Live long and prosper, you beautiful deviants.
Great video as always man.
This game actually looks really cool with body jacking, multiple paths options, backtracking puzzle, first person cutscenes... Thanks for analyzing this game!
56:51 Is literally the reason why you've become one of my top 5 favorite channels on UA-cam and your work has inspired me to do gaming content that I love as well, it's payed off hugely for me and I'm always glad to support other creators who are passionate about these games the way you are!
Great vid and one of my favorite games ever despite it's jank. I may be a bit biased though.
Man, was hoping you had access to Maken Shao as well, I'm curious as to if the camera change makes the gameplay any better.
Dreamcast time.
The start-up screen used to get me caught up SO quick.
