The cut to Andy with no mention of him being in the US visiting caught me off guard lol, also should take the 350z and it to the track teach Steve how to do rings then let him get that first one in on the 86. 2 videos in one track trip and we would definitely love to see him learn! (If he wants to of course)
ITB setups became my favorite over turbo fast. They dont make massive power but they add so much soul the engine, response, quick revs and linear power delivery.
@@hoonaticbloggs5402 that looks and sounds absolutely fantastic mate. Im look to get a kit from RHD Engineering myself for a BMW M52TU28. What is your overal impression of it?
I love this build. My k24/k20 swapped mr-s makes about the same power we are going to be extremely close on weight once you’re done. 271 whp and 2176 lbs with full interior, roll bar, a/c and a full tank
I'm fairly sure the header going narrow then wide creates a Venturi effect which will pull the gasses out the exhaust, enabling more flow. Second thing is...dear god that sounds epic!!
You are 100% correct that is how the exhaust works. It causes a low pressure then expansion will pull the airflow through the restricted area much faster
Not really a venturi effect. Exhaust pulses are reflected when the pipe cross section changes. If you time those reflections correctly, it leads to low pressure "pulling gasses out of the exhaust".
I think there's something special about a car like that with that engine being so potent 300 angry 4cyl hp is different from a lazy turbo 300 or v6 300
Hey Jimmy I watch the podcast that you were recently on and you were saying you don’t know what to do content wise with building your cars and so forth! Personally I think with just being a genuine car enthusiasts I love seeing you build cars but I hate seeing them sit.. so personally I think the biggest thing missing from your channel is you going and enjoying your cars at the track or just a cruise with the boys and beating on them and finding the problems with each car and fixing it and continuing to push the cars for what you designed them for! We don’t need you acting up and hyping up lower your car or switching wheels we want to see that genuine hype from adrenaline from you shredding with the boys or doing some little pulls while out for a cruise with the homies! Just my opinion and hope you actually see this as I want to see this channel get to that next level and you not get burnt out!
This is insane. I'm so stoked for you! I'm a Toyota purist, but I absolutely love this build. That power to weight figure can give an Alfaholics GTA-R a run for its money. And probably for a fraction of the cost.
3:50 the going into a small diameter then to a big one, think of it like a garden hose, when you cover half of the hole it creates more pressure and shoots out faster, same thing as that
86 on the Dyno, my lift showed up for my shop today, and the framer came by with an estimate for materials and labor. Check signed and walls going up soon, what a great Friday 🙌
This thing is so good! Get Spoon to make a custom header with that megaphone part on it, upgrade the fuel pump, put some Ignite Red in it, and 300+ RWHP here we come! I can't wait to see it ripping on a track soon. It sounds so amazing.
Let me tell you… for as long as I have been watching this channel I can say that Jimmy is literally one of the best out there…. Dope dude, dope crew and amazing fleet of cars. Salute to you on this W, this Corolla sounds soooooo awesome!!! Oakes Garage forever!!!!
about the exhaust its called the venture effect, forcing air to a smaller point in an exhaust briefly causes it to increase the speed at whicch it flowes and basically create a vacuum to pull exhaust thru it
Jim they call them Merge Collectors. It acts as a de Laval acceleration nozzle. in simple explanation, its a pinched tube ( hour glass shape ) used to accelerate compressible fluid
That collector promotes power because it starts acting like a rocket nozzle. As air moves into the narrowing throat it starts compressing the air. When it gets past the throat it wants to expand and get rid of that pressure. The widening guides that pressure and keeps it from over expanding.
That Oregon plate made my day, with the right zip code and P.O. Box it’s amazing what one can do. That thing is tits gents, itbs/side drafts/etc etc a tunnel and I’m set at any speed.
Don’t often comment at all but my LORD that thing sounds glorious! What a weapon you guys have built and brilliant to see such genuine hype from everyone involved. Spoon is proper pumped! 👍🏻 and rightly so. Followed all your builds from the red Z. Every vid is my feel good escape from the world. Big love to Jimmy, Big Steve, Spoon, Austin, B-Hall, Lupe, Ant. You all deserve every ouch of recognition you get!
the choke point in the fancy headers causes the exhaust gas to go faster at the collection point. this makes less pressure in the neighboring cylinders to scavenge the exhaust out.
Great vid, I love AE86 ever since I owned my SR5, the biggest regret ever selling that car. My 5 and 2 year old boys race to my computer when they hear your outro music, pretty funny. Anyway, have a good one.
The exhaust shape makes a difference because it allows the gases to escape faster (fluid mechanics) As it gets narrow, air speed increases as pressure slightly increases and then on the other side because of the expansion the air is able to leave at a higher velocity than which it enters thus creating a vacuum which will allow the motor to breath better all the way back to the valves Or at least something along those lines
Hey Jimmy , I've been a long time watcher of Adam and havent really watched your channel, I've found myself watching so many of your older videos and you have become a regular of mine. I appreciate all the work you do as well as your crew, you guys fuck.
Awe man i love this shit! Just the homieness vibes, the at home shop vibes. I tend to keep watching each video you post lately and it’s awesome to see the humor and creative mindset each person gives to the Channel. Growing up the different ethnicities, ideas to building cars, laying on the cold concrete excited about the little shit. This is awesome🤘🏽🤘🏽🫶🏽
Win win win I’m getting a k24 for my ke30 Corolla and you guys just cemented it so cool to see how you guys are killing it, talk that shit Jim talk that shit hahaha 🍻🍻 cheers boys
That exhaust merge collector creates expansion for gases and then creates velocity. To bigger pipe size and the gases loses speed in the exhaust. To small pipe and gas's can't get out. So the tapered section of exhaust after the headers promotes exhaust Gass velocity.
Turbo, rods, pistons , lets go nice build dude ,in the uk guys are putting in BDG engines in those cars for rallying and making great power and they sound proper cheers
If you want that motor to howl & really make jam ...Build the bottom end with some higher compression. You HAVE the fuel to support it. And ...the High compression kick in the gut every time you put the loud pedal to the ground will knock you over! Enjoy it Jimmy
another reason to do it .,..you've spent a load of money on the 4P head ...it would be a shame to be 'economical' by not strengthening the bottom, only to have something fail, and trash the nice head.
I think the reason the smaller exhaust sizing works is due to the Bernoulli’s equation. Essentially by decreasing the area in that section of piping you create a lower pressure zone and increase the exhaust’s velocity. By doing so the lower pressure in that smaller area then sucks exhaust gasses from the head creating a better and faster flowing exhaust.

“Soul” is exactly the word it’s hard to explain until you have experienced it, they are just right!
Nah, nothing feels as good as a turbocharger’s onset of boost. Can’t beat the jet engine sound of a noisy turbo either.

You are 100% correct that is how the exhaust works. It causes a low pressure then expansion will pull the airflow through the restricted area much faster
Yeah. It helps with the scavenging. 2 stroke is an extreme version of this.
Not really a venturi effect. Exhaust pulses are reflected when the pipe cross section changes. If you time those reflections correctly, it leads to low pressure "pulling gasses out of the exhaust".
It's not a Venturi effect more a two strong power pipe effect
Seeing everyone losing their minds after each pull kept making me smile. The 86 is fantastic. Well done.
Awesome fucking idea for the multi-camera setup on the dyno Austin! It added so much!
It's a venturi. You put them on merge collectors to improve pulse wave performance between cylinders.
