Incorrect. That sets pinion preload. Called a crush sleeve. It’s gets crushed between the bearings and you have to crush it to set the correct preload. Looks like that last person didn’t give it the beans when setting it. Hit up Weir performance and get a solid spacer and also replace the ring and pinion and bearings. Also it would be a good idea to get panic axles. You’d be sorry if you didn’t do it know.
That thing isn't just a spacer, it's a crush sleeve, you're actually supposed to follow a special tightening procedure to collapse that spacer until the clearance is proper. You can also convert to a solid sleeve, but that requires having it machined to the correct length for the proper preload on the bearings.
Jimmy, Not only is that a collapsible spacer, they also use different sized shims on the pinion behind the bearing. It needs that spacer (best to get a new one - they are a common Toyota part) and the shims need to be correct under that bearing. This needs to be setup by someone who has differential experience.
As you tighten the pinion down the "new" pre load spacer should bend causing the correct pre load to be achieved. It might be that the last person to overhaul the diff used an old preload spacer.
Yeah jimmy that’s a crush sleeve for the diff those are supposed to bubble up when torqued properly. Just needs more torque on that pinion! Standard solid axle stuff! Hahaha
THIS. Will take WAY more torque than the impacts can provide to crush the first time. Need to then achieve proper rotational preload with how much crush
Mate that's the crush washer, as you tighten down the pinion nut to the required torque it applies the right pressure one the pinion bearings. After that you get your backlash and preload to the carrier bearings with the adjuster nuts on the sides. This in turn will give you your contact pattern with the pinion and crown wheel. Hope this helps if you're doing a sick job anyway, love you dude!
Right before this upload I stumbled upon the "Moving into my dream garage..!!" upload 3 years ago and was back tracking on the progress of your shop. I did notice you guys had more sub mail in your vlogs back then, it's cool to see it come back.
Yes, that is a crush sleeve. which is tightened until the correct spacing is achieved. There is also a solid spacer set up. That uses shims behind a solid spacer to get it into spec.
You have to set up that paint for spoon man I think that would add so much more to the show. You have soooooo much space in that place, that other room is perfect of for a corner booth
Because I got critiqued for it at work and see you do the same. I challenge you to remove the saying "Right?" at the end of almost every thought when you're explaining something. You're the SME. You're teaching us. You don't have to ask us for reassurance. You will sound way more confident. I hope it doesn't come off as condescending. Love the work you do.
Delighted you Finally got to open my gone off 😉 Cake and Irish goodies 😀 The package was pre Lz drift fest in mondelo and the Driftgames bash so sorry if the letter didn't make much sense. Was so nice to Meet your self and Steph and RJ At the Drift Games December Bash, Hopefully won't be too long before we catch you and the gang in Ireland again 💪
That's a crush sleeve and the pinion nut needs to be tourqed to the proper tension based on backlash between the ring gear and pinion gear. I would recommend taking the center section to a 4x4 or race shop and have them setup the gears because there is some science behind it
The washer is a crush collar looks like they did not tighten the pinion nut enough for the collar to start crushing and then you have to check turning torque
Hey Jimmy it's not a washer it's a crush sleeve there is 2 was of adjusting it one is send it with a rattle gun till the move ment gets smaller or put it in a press with the pinion sitting on a solid piece of steel and the housing over the pinion with out the housing touching the bench put the upper bearing on and use a socket to go on to and press it down till your move ment goes away but not too tight as when you 're install the seal and put the yoke on you can use the rattle gun to get to the last preload on the bearing don't want it over tight otherwise will cook the pinion bearings and not too loose otherwise will destroy them also hope this makes sense as I do this as I do this for a job and but hard to type out also when you to put the seal in and the yoke on will get a slight drag from the seal do don't get fooled by that straight away
you guys could have a pole extend from the wall and put a tarp on it with shower curtain hooks and pull it out whenever you sand or paint to block off the shop from the door like how some hospital rooms are.
Once a month sub mail turns into every couple months😂😂😂 thank god y’all are gonna get onto it again. I will have to send a care package asap. I just never knew the right time cause of hiccups like this❤😂
Definitely keep doing the sub mail at the end of the video, and doing it ever other video is a good idea! love the videos and editing been awesome since Austin joined
I've not even watched the full video yet but that shot of the cars from above is insane. That is one of the best collection of cars not a massive variety but an insane looking set bravo Jimmy and team 👏
ain't gonna lie, I kinda liked the rx7 with the bare metal look. maybe just clear over it, but it will look fire regardless of what James and the boys do
You need the crush sleeve in order for the pinion to spin freely just need to get the ugha dughas correct so as not to wipe out the bearings pinion preload should be between 14-19 inch pounds of resistance using a dial type inch pound torque wrench
Run a solid pinion spacer instead of a crush sleeve. You can’t over tighten them and they’re way more dependable for what you’re going to be doing with the car.
That bit in the middle is the crush sleeve. The crush distance was not crushed correctly when the diff was put back together, leaving bearing slop. You gotta put it back in and use a big breaker bar to crush it down with the pinon nut until the pinion depth is set correctly. It goes one way, so once you go 'too far" that's it you have to start over with a new crush sleeve. So you gotta sneak up on it. Please look into how you set pinion depth in these, you can't just ugga dugga them on like that. Its a whole procedure.
Why not make a "paint booth" in the extra area behind the offices. Not necessarily to paint in but to at least prep in a contained area.
He’s mentioned in previous videos that he isn’t allowed to paint in the shop because of lease contracts or something similar, I’d assume it’s something along those lines
Spoon got one at his anyway 🤟 more room for cars he never drives 😂

That big “washer” is the crush sleeve. That’s part of how you set pinion depth besides the shims under the bearing.
100% correct
JIMMY READ THIS lol
@@cameronbaker6885 hope he does would benefit from juts a solid spacer. atleast that what the offroad world does for the toyota stuff
not pinion depth, but pinion drag. the shims are used to set the depth.

Crush sleeve. Supposed to crush it to taken up the slop
The gts rear end is a 6.7" ring gear with disks while the sr5 is a 6.3" gear with drum brakes. Hopefully that helps with ordering parts
As you tighten the pinion down the "new" pre load spacer should bend causing the correct pre load to be achieved. It might be that the last person to overhaul the diff used an old preload spacer.

Dalton in the wild!!
Yeah jimmy that’s a crush sleeve for the diff those are supposed to bubble up when torqued properly. Just needs more torque on that pinion! Standard solid axle stuff! Hahaha
Yea I was like poor UA-cam diff builds
THIS. Will take WAY more torque than the impacts can provide to crush the first time. Need to then achieve proper rotational preload with how much crush
I *cannot* wait to see the 86 on the dyno, finding N/A power puts every tuner to the test!
This. Plus it's gonna sound amazing with those ITBs screaming at 9k!
Love in the opening you see Jimmy working on the cars. I know he always does, but it's nice to see in third person. He's a skilled guy

Its called a crush sleeve and is used to preload the pinion and help keep it into place
Right before this upload I stumbled upon the "Moving into my dream garage..!!" upload 3 years ago and was back tracking on the progress of your shop. I did notice you guys had more sub mail in your vlogs back then, it's cool to see it come back.

Video dropped 9 minutes ago and im here for my daily dose of Jimmy O ! Let's get it boys !
Crush sleeve, you can get a solid pinion spacer to delete that then it's just setting backlash to match a good gear pattern with shims
Setting up diffs and back lash is a whole science in itself 💯
That shop B-roll is everything
You have to set up that paint for spoon man I think that would add so much more to the show. You have soooooo much space in that place, that other room is perfect of for a corner booth
Austin man you killed it with the intro to this one!
Spoon always looking like a proud dad watching Jimmy spray !😂
probably the coolest collection of cars on youtube!
Dunno about y'all, but I am digging the B-roll intros!
A crush sleeve is only a one time use, solid pinion spacers can be reused and also shimmed for preload, makes setting them up a ton easier as well.
Love that spoon put the touch on the bay when jimmy walked off 😂

Clean white paint outside, pearl white engine bay with chrome engine bits 🔥

Run a solid sleeve with shims on the pinion. Only get one use out of the crush sleeve.
Super excited to see the 86 driving!
I legit just pulled my subframe off last night too, and sanding down the engine bay.
Tsx build coming back spicy!
So glad to see future Jim sorting things LOL
You’re growing rapidly. This is always exciting to watch. Your team is so versed and skilled. Love it dude 🎉
Keep leveling up jimmy so cool to see the Chanel grow to what it is today
The realization jimmy had that spoons been yelling at him since he's started working there. Rollin
I am so happy to see sub mail, been anxiously waiting to see you guys open some packages its always a vibe
Jimmy's on a f*ckin roll. Loving the vid style, builds and homies. Immaculate Vibes
Crush sleeve, you gotta torque it down to fix the tolerance issue
@giveaway644 scammer

I’d been waiting on sub mail. Now that you’re back to opening I’ll send some goodies yalls way. Keep up the great work gang.
That's the pinion spacer it's a crush type it's supposed to get torqued way down and then backed off and then done again if I'm not mistaken

That a Crush sleeve and it takes a lot of force b4 it actually starts to crush. It’s crucial for pinion depth and bearing pre-load.
Watching Jim work makes me wanna jump on the swaps for my projects 😂
Get some tarps or poly and make a tent for prep n vent it outside... Open sub packs every other
That "washer" is actually a crush sleeve. and by the looks of it, it wasnt crushed nearly enough.

They probably never set the drag on the pinion and Cush sleeve didn’t Crush takes a lot to get the sleeve to start to crushing

That is a crush washer. It was never crushed. After you find the correct pinion depth, that crushes until there is adequate pre load on the pinion.
