@@tk4c415 the difference in price is minor if any but the level of potential angst is very high every time you get in a metered taxi - will the meter be ‘broken’ as is common - will he understand your directions - will he have change at the end of the ride ? Honestly the stress ain’t worth it unless you can’t or won’t wait for a grab.
Thanks for the information Chris, we loved the details about the Taxi's especially. I suspect the Taxi drivers will see us coming and pull this trick but even 300 Baht is small change when you consider what catching a taxi is like in Australia so won't be too concerned if this gets pulled on us.
We just encountered the attraction closed scam at the Grand Palace. A “security guy” stopped us and said that the palace was closed to tourists. He then tried to rope us into a 2-hour tuk tuk tour of sites that were within short walking distance. We kindly walked away and found the attraction to be fully open.
Come across your videos whilst I was training in Thailand in December. Absolutely love it and looking at coming back for a longer period of time. Great videos mate, keep it up
I married my Thai wife in December and the taxi scam was in full effect and super annoying . It happened in the core and if you were outside of the core it wasn't bad. Sometimes we had to wait 10+ cabs to get one as they always asked where we wanted to go then would say "no' and drive off . One tuk tuk driver wanted 700 baht to go 7 minutes .... we ended up walking . A lot of times we also just jumped on the BTS but it was tiring to say the least . I took photo's of one we did pay his rate and he had the meter covered so I took a picture of the cab number and the covered meter and reported him to the tourist police .
One of the big scams in and about Pattaya, are Baht buses on Sukhumvit asking the last farang and only passenger on the bus "Where you go to?" and then demand 100/200 sometimes more to go a klm or two. Don't pay? Get off the bus and still pay 20 baht. This also happens on Jomtien Beach rd. I just say no worries, I will call the Tourist Police and report you. Normally get to where I want go.

Me personally I just use grab here, its easier and the cost is already in stone and they already have it on their phone the location. Getting random taxis on the road are so 90's :) :) :)
tbh it's rarely necessary in Bangkok. I've not once in many years paid anything except taxi meter rates + a tip. We shouldn't promote paying fixed fees. Tips are a much better way to give a little extra income tbh.
Strange for me to watch this while I sit in Bangkok. The Taxi story is real. There are options like Grab and Bolt (apps), and they have fixed and cheaper prices than taxis that don't use a meter. However, they often take a long time to get to you... so jumping into a taxi is easiest. Also, don't be tempted by the motorbike taxis. They are faster than anything else, but they take so many risks that if you ride often, you will eventually be in an accident. Fortunately the one accident I was in (as a passenger) didn't hurt me, but it was still scary to find myself standing in the middle of Sukhumvit while other traffic continued around us.
I am currently planning my trip and don’t feel like I want to go anymore , I feel like if I’m on vacation I should be relaxed not looking out for scammers all the time and so on
Love your content sir! Big fan. Been Thailand 6 times! And yes he’s right. Big problems can happen in Thailand when it comes to paying fines for silly choices but Thailand has this remarkable knack of smudging out the bad experiences once the event has passed. Pay up. Move on. Enjoy the country.
My experience is When the Thai police pulls you over, you will be fined no matter what. On Phuket island where there are many one road to get to certain areas the police will alway set up in those locations. For a month I stayed in a condo on an dead end neighbourhood where I had to pass the local police station every time I leave or return. I was “fined” almost everyday. At first I had the same “cost of doing business” travel cost attitude. At 1000 baht every time I step out it got costly quickly. Among the most creative fines were improper footwear, lights not bright enough for fog, take out food bags dangling on front hook is a distraction, not wearing proper gloves (I was just empty handed at the time), and my favourite “You are Canadian”, no explanation beyond that. Eventually they gave up with the excuses and just had me put the money in my scooter as they “searched” an empty under seat storage. I am ashamed to say that more than once I had looped around the entire southern half of the island just to avoid the Ao Chalong round about and ridden many times onto Karon beach past the pond to check if there was a police checkpoint. Needless to say, I don’t think I will be heading back to Phuket. Plus the food hawkers have mostly gotten very complacent. They all go to the same shop and buy the same meats, sauces and noodles and make the same horrible lazy fare. Only places to get good food there are places where you are just pointing at pictures and you don’t understand each other.
Sorry to hear you had bad experience with Thai police. I am Thai and feel sad to say Thai police are corrupted. There was a recent incident that Taiwanese actress was fined for no reason. She posted her IG and it became a big international news. All police who were involved have been arrested. Hope this incident will remind the bad police who has not been caught!
I have been back in Phuket for nearly two years now and I rarely ever get stopped despite having gone through these checkpoints hundreds of times. And even on the times I was stopped I have never been fined once. It sounds like you are just very unlucky. Of course, if you need to avoid the checkpoints it easy enough to do so because they are usually at the same places and at the same times respectively each day. So if you know during which hours each one is set up each day you can usually avoid them. And if you live on a one-way street and its set up near your condo you can just not go out during the two or 3-hour period that it is set up. Speaking of checkpoints, I have not run into any of the regular ones for over a week now. So either they have moved all the locations and times or they have temporarily stopped them. And if they have stopped them I’m guessing that maybe its because traffic has gotten so bad here the past few months that they don’t want to make it even worse by holding up traffic at checkpoints. I’m sure we will see them again soon though.
@@zekasrbin - That’s not really too surprising, particularly if you are not in Pattaya or Patong.
