Lived in Park Slope, worked Crowns heights as a rookie cop, then Brownsville .. so I used to drive through Crowns Heights for many years during the 80s & 90s. Lots of history & memories..
I've really grown an affection and personable relationship with some Hasidic Jews over the years. When you speak to them, and really see that their values are Family, Faith, minimal technological influence, they really kind of have the right ideas... Some of course go super extreme as do all religions, but the Hasidic are genuinely hardworking, great family people and they are more than happy to have a conversation with you in the Crown Heights area as long as you show respect and are genuine with them. As a young ignorant man, I used to think poorly of them, the reason I type this is because we all grow and have personal experiences in which we connect with others, different than ourselves, and those connections are beautiful in shaping a proper mindset, heart, and soul, and opening yourself up to becoming a better more informed, and less judgmental person. Alright, I'm rambling now, God Bless yall!
I moved from Brooklyn to San Diego, ca in 1987 and have been soo happy, until now, it’s the first time that I’ve missed Brooklyn, and missing it hard. I also knew nothing about the history, thanks for that.
Born Guyanese and raised Crown Heights in 80s until 2010. I have family that own brownstone in crown heights. They are always changing names of neighborhoods and that is when you know when your are New Yorker or not. I still say Triboro and I am like that’s Bushwick. Love the video.
I used to live 2 blocks away from it. I heard the protests for months when they were closing it. Honestly, I love Tom's channel but seeing him walk this streets is a bit of a trip because we all know Buffalo ave isn't exactly safe.
No mention of the annual Labor Day Parade which is a major staple in Crown Heights for the Caribbean community. You definitely dropped the ball on that one!!
I had to watch this video in two sittings, because life. Now I may have missed it, but I can’t believe you didn’t mention the West Indian Day Parade aka the Labor Day Parade on Eastern Parkway. As a child, I knew that we had Labor Day off from school being a holiday, but I didn’t realize it was a National Holiday. Considering it’s been a tradition for this parade to happen on Labor Day, I never knew until I was a teen/young adult what the observance was for. I didn’t know that everyone else in the country were throwing cookouts/bbqs on Labor Day lol.
EXCELLENT POINT!!!! I grew up in Crown Heights a block away from the Parkway and Labor Day was a HIGHLIGHT!!! The fact that it wasn’t mentioned just goes to show how the lens is Still very WHITE!!!!
good job! you acknowldge every ethnicity and was respectful explaining about the infamous riots. love the cats in this video. interesting aspects and artichecture. the personalities of the times. very informative. all the best to you.
Came across your channel a little bit ago, LOVE your knowledge. Have told my Co workers about your channel. You deserve 1 Mil., I know you will get there !!!!!!
WOW! i grew up in Flatbush, Brooklyn I am long gone but i was there during them times. Man all those forgotten names I totally remember this riot. Its been so long I totally did not remember the reason behind the crown heights riot. Thanks for the information.
I grew up in Crown Heights (formerly known as Crow Hill), and you've told me a lot things I never knew about it. My building, on President Street, was built in 1929. That was on the site of the Kings County Penitentiary's outer wall. That prison, which was sometimes also called the President Street Jail, was between Nostrand and Rogers Avenues, and President and Montgomery Streets. It was demolished in 1907. The convicts made shoes and brooms, and also were forced to work, while in chains, on the construction of some buildings in the neighborhood. Medgar Evers College is now entirely within the site of the old prison.
Just visited NYC a few weeks ago and passed through Crown Heights (on my way back from visiting Ebbetts Field home plate). Actually even saw those guys painting that building at 6:25. How do I remember these things? LOL. Seems like a really cool neighborhood. Easy to get to many other places in the city. Far enough away to not have many tourists.
An interesting video...I spent some of my early childhood in Crown Heights! I used to live on Brooklyn Ave and then Lefferts Ave in the late 60's to early ''70's (left N.Y. in late '72..live in Philly now)! Went to P.S.91 for kindergarden ..I can only imagine what it cost to live there now!!
Grew up on St Marks between Ralph Ave and Buffalo Ave. Have walked through this street many, many, many times, Love the history. BedStuy myself and saw that video.
Thanks. I'm originally from Crown Heights, but when I was 8 years old my mother took me to Compton California where I grew up. It was a culture shock moving to SOUTHERN california in 1965, I'd never seen such racist police before (I'm African American) and one officer got very aggressive with me because I didn't have a southern accent and he decided I was trying to sass him. I missed hearing about the Crown Heights riot in the 1990's, thanks for the history lesson.
The other thing about chasidisism is that they are mystical about their practice. Its hard to explain. My mom grew up in borough park but left the strict religious life. Her family came from Budapest, Hungary, and owned an upholstery shop. Worked very hard in the 1960's through 80's. No government assistance, just hard working.
Great video, and thanks Eric for the dog, cat and squirrel shots. One question: why mention the A train from Harlem when the 2, 3, 4, & 5 from The Bronx and Harlem run right down Eastern Parkway?
fantastic ....thank you...the buildings the cats the narration....the historical stuff....the people...the plants...wow...the amount of work over centuries that goes into building a civilization is important to keep in perspective...
I just moved out here 3months from Harlem, I love it so far I'm resided on Schenectady Ave.. This video was very helpful and thanks for the enlightenment of the history of it.. So mote it be
Evidently you do not know that the church across the street from the Weeksville museum on Bergen St was part of the underground railroad headed by Harriet Tudman?
Brooklyn my beloved home, visited a few months ago... and... IDE NEVER RETURN!!! its way!! too!! crowded!!! OMG!! i left Brooklyn in 94, transferred college down to Sarasota FL. (best move ever) As far as im concerned the best of Brooklyn was in the past. right to the time i left. after that came gentrification and a whole new onslaught of people who had a history of snubbing their noses at Brooklyn. But with the cost of city living so high and Brooklyn having far FAR more choice real-estate than most people outside the borough realized, Brooklyn quickly became the place to be. We always had shifts in immigrants. well rooted in diversity. but these new people ... well lets just say... yuk. I do appreciate their ambition. never seen such a boom in new businesses in a very very long time. but with their arrival also comes with long term natives being pushed out. well. its both bad and good. Brooklyn is undergoing a new revival. But lets hope it remains Brooklyn and not baby Manhattan. and last my visit, it is leaning more towards the later. hell, i even got to enjoy Sarasota for a few decades while it was off the nations radar, Sarasota, Clearwater and Saint pete. which all came to an end during the pandemic. now even those places are flooded by the wrong sorts. oh well. good thing ive moved onto the one of the last off the radar hot spots. and no... im keeping this one a secret.
Welcome back Eric. You professional cinematographer you! Also. Can you put the sick plug links in the caption? I kinda wanna watch the whole video before checking out the sick plugs.
I remember it as well. I was in middle school and lived off Kingston Ave. Host is right even as a kid I knew there was tension. I did learn Hebrew alphabet and some words from a store owner my dad use to visit on a Kingston Ave on their side . It always felt that the Pkwy was the divided line and I walk through to visit my friends periodically on Empire and Kingston. However, I did go to my friend on St. Marks more often.
I thought Weeks was English? I enjoyed the history lesson and loved the cats. The beast, I mean the dog was cute too. Cute photo of you as well hanging out with DVDs? lol
I have a lot of things to say about it the Crown Heights Riot issue, but that’s not for the innanets so I’ll just say another great video as always! I always appreciate the research you do for these videos 🙏🏽
I was taking a Street View "walk" east down President Street from Kensington in Crown Heights because I've got a few million dollars just itching to invest in real estate. That's obviously a lie. I think I have about 217 bucks to my name. Anyhow, it was so interesting how the architecture changed from block to block until eventually you're in a suburban-looking area with stand-alone homes. New York City fascinates the hell outta me. Bodega cats! Cuuuute. (Bodega Cat is also a great rye whiskey.)
@@KPierce-ej1pb I am a huge fan of Baseball history and have visited the neighborhood where Ebbets was previously located on two locations. Absolutely no issues at alll walking around that neighborhood. Nice, friendly people who live in the Ebbets Aoartments.
I was a teacher at the time of the Crown Heights riots. It was because of that riot Queens College paid for 50 teachers of Black and Jewish decent to go to Israel for 6 weeks to study how different cultures can live in peace side by side. Of course that doesn’t look so good with today’s crisis but back then it was a great learning vehicle.
Lived in Park Slope, worked Crowns heights as a rookie cop, then Brownsville .. so I used to drive through Crowns Heights for many years during the 80s & 90s. Lots of history & memories..

I live in Crown Heights....been here 17 years. I actually just saw myself in your video

🤜🏾💥🤛🏼 Peace and Love Tom for bigg'n up the Crown Heights , 1010 President St 3c was my old address there for about 4 years or so (1968 - 1972)
My life began in Crown Heights 100 years ago. I was born at St Mary’s hospital on Buffalo Ave just off of Eastern Parkway. The hospital is now closed.
I used to live 2 blocks away from it. I heard the protests for months when they were closing it. Honestly, I love Tom's channel but seeing him walk this streets is a bit of a trip because we all know Buffalo ave isn't exactly safe.
you're 100 years old? 😁
@@Alex-fx5es No it just feels like 100 years. Ha!
So close. I'm East New York Ave and 95th st. By the huge park. NYTimes recently made an article about the tennis courts. Very cool!

You didn't speak about the music out of Crown Heights, for example, Crown Heights Affair a popular group in the 70s and 80s.

Those aren’t “bodega cats”, unless you are from the neighborhood and can correct me on what bodegas they’re from. Otherwise they’re just stray cats.
In Crown Heights it's Bodega Katz not Cats
Can't believe there's not a band named that...(Bodega Katz). That's just t too cool a name to pass up!
