As someone who grew up Jewish in Arizona, I’ve always been fascinated by the Hasidic Jews of Brooklyn, New York. They are widely considered to be America’s most religious and closed-off community, even more than the Amish of Pennsylvania. In this 47-minute documentary, I embark on a journey to uncover the secrets of the Hasidics behind closed doors, and discover what makes their lifestyles so incredibly unique.
Guided in the beginning by my friend Abby Stein, a former Hasidic rabbi who is now a transgender author, I gain a fascinating insight into Hasidic life and customs from her perspective - both the good and the bad.
In our climax scene, I meet with @ShloimeZionce, a fellow traveler and UA-camr, who opens the doors to his home so I could document a traditional Shabbat dinner with his family. With the permission of a rabbi, we capture the essence of this essential weekly ritual and the warmth and hospitality of the Hasidic people. You can follow Shloime's adventures on his channel: / shloimezionce
This story is really fascinating and I'm really proud of how it came out. From the traditional clothing, music, and food to the strict gender roles and controversies surrounding the community, this documentary dives deep into every aspect of Hasidic life with a balanced portrayal of the good and the bad.
Join me on this captivating journey to experience the Hasidic Jews of Brooklyn, New York, like never seen before.

I am a Muslim and I like family oriented communities, I respect the people who follow what they believe. I enjoyed watching
I *love* this response and attitude 💕
Careful, you’re gonna have your own “brothers” replying now calling you a traitor and saying free Palestine…
My only concern is closed religious (doesn't actually have to be religious) communities like this sometimes become breeding grounds for really scuzzy stuff. Victims can't really escape their community without leaving all they've known behind. And victimizers are often given protection due to their status in the community.
@@Viceeoff do not ruin the peace here and mind your business
@@123kirmizi wtf are you going on about you muppet. I’m just speaking facts. 95% of Muslims can’t even watch a video like this without taking themselves to the comments and saying something about Palestine
This was a very challenging story to tell, given all of the tension and controversy, but I felt that I did the best of my ability to tell a well-rounded story, highlighting both the positives and the negatives in the community. One note about the North Korean internet comparison - I do regret keeping that part in because it is not true, and I got carried away. Thank you to those who have pointed it out.
My team and I worked for 6 months to get this video edited and ready to post, and I am really proud of how it came out. Huge thanks to Abby Stein, Shloime Zionce, Beri Weber and the others who gave me their time to explain life in their community. As always, I welcome your comments, thoughts and suggestions about the Hasidics in the comments here. I will be reading them all and responding to as many as I can 🙏
When is the next video
I said it on the community post but Lakewood New Jersey and the surrounding towns have a huge population of Hasidics
What are your thoughts on the Silicon Valley Bank collapsing yesterday, Drew Binsky?
It's not fair to make a video with someone who's ex-hasidic and has a lot of animosity against Hasidic Jews.

Great piece! Thanks for taking the time to document this. As a Jew born in Brooklyn and growing up in Manhattan, this bring a lot of clarity and understanding to even someone who lived there.
I might say this was one of my favorite videos you have made and I just discovered your channel about a month ago. I’ve watched a ton. This was fascinating, thanks Drew! ❤ from Tennessee!
A lesson we can all learn from this video: at least once a week, put the phone down and be in the moment with your family and friends. Thank you, Drew.
Agreed! I admire that. They put everything away to ensure bonds are kept and formed. We all could learn from that.
Amen
Even if it’s not for religious reasons. Taking some time out to be with your family and friends is a great thing to integrate into your schedule. :)
@@eggmon420 Sadly They doesn’t Convince Twitter Users Or TikTok Users
@@eggmon420 *Indeed. Jews or other religious people do NOT have a monopoly on this matter. I, for example, am an atheist. But, I still cherish my SECULAR family, spend time with them often, visit my mother (father is dead) at least once or twice a week, and for sure stay away from my cell phone often on a weekly basis when I am by myself and desire serious quiet time. I'm generation X, btw. My generation (people in their mid 40s through mid 50's) grew up without cell phones as kids. In any case, I also turn off the phone altogether when I am having dinner or lunch with family members in my house, their house(s), a restaurant, or if I'm with close friends enjoying their company. In sum -- if you have inner discipline, if you know how to live LIFE without all the nuisance and modern conveniences, if you treat fellow humans with respect and kindness -- you will be alright WITHOUT RELIGION.*

Let it be known to all:
Through the Holy Spirit, God has put it on me to preach to those lost in the devil's deceit!
I tell ye, truly, Jesus of Nazareth is the propitiation for the whole world's sins. He is the anointed one, for he is, Jesus Christ. God the Father has raised him from the dead; who is gone into heaven, and is on the right hand of God! Angels and authorities and powers being made subject unto him.
Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life: no one comes to the Father, but by him. They who believe and are baptized with the Holy Spirit shall be saved; but they who believe not shall be damned. For they who believe not on him, shall die in their sins!
I tell ye now to repent of your sins, accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, and you'll receive the gift of the Holy Spirit upon asking the Father!
There are *NO* sub-divisions of Christianity. You're either a disciple of Christ or not. A Christian is someone who follows God's word, not a religion. Who obey the Father and follow his will; not man's nor their own heart's. Unless you keep Jesus' commandments, think not the Holy Spirit will dwell within you!
They who heed this message and did what was stated with an open heart to God...
Read the Holy Bible (KJV) daily and every time before you read, pray to the Father and ask:
"Lord I ask that you give me understanding of your word, that I interpret it the way you want me to, and none of my own. I ask you in Jesus' name, amen."

28 And though they found no cause of death in him, yet desired they Pilate that he should be slain.
29 *And when they had fulfilled all that was written of him, they took him down from the tree, and laid him in a sepulchre.*
30 *But God raised him from the dead:*
31 And he was seen many days of them which came up with him from Galilee to Jerusalem, who are his witnesses unto the people.
32 *And we declare unto you glad tidings, how that the promise which was made unto the fathers,*

I am a secular Jewish woman and I used to work with kids who had special needs. I worked with a Hassidic little girl in her home. The mom was very sweet, but her life was rough-not what I would call beautiful. She was 24, had 5 kids and ran herself ragged fulfilling all the strictures. Did anyone notice many families in which the girls were wearing same dress in different sizes? The moms made those clothes themselves. Not only did meat and dairy meals need to be eaten separately, this woman had to keep separate sets of china/cookware, wash them in separate dishwasher cycles AND run the dishwasher empty in between. She was not allowed to touch or even be alone in a room with any man but her husband. There was not much respect for her in that family..
I’ve heard many stories like this , it’s actually quite sad
There isn't much respect for women in that religion and in many other religions. That is why I find many religions hypocritical. They want to praise God but treat women like 3rd class citizens which really isn't a thing anymore but you get where I'm coming from. I'm a catholic and I use to go to church regularly and would take part in church activities when I was younger but when the head priest tried to molest me. I stopped being involved with the church. I still believe in God but I do it my way. I've always asked why the most religious groups and countries are pretty much the most violent and always killing one another. Where is the religion in that!

Hey! As someone’s who’s Jewish and not very familiar with Muslim law/customs, could you explain to me the similarities? I would love to hear, thanks! 😊
I think the only belief that can save humanity,
is to love our world, nature and each other.
Any belief system that separates one human from another,
especially with violence,
Is a zero-sum game.
Why would God wish death or war OR SEGREGATION by his word?
If God created this amazing planet and everything on this planet?
Why would God want us to destroy each other or any part of it's beauty?
Orthodoxy is cozy...you feel safe having the "right" belief.
But to be "right" about what God wants means that another person hast to be "wrong" about what god wants.
This is what is often referred to as Zero-sum game.
There is the earth and it's flora and fauna.
We may be the "keepers" of the earth....as CHOSEN by God?
If we are.....don't we have to STOP making war?
Look at all the wars through the millennia......isn't it time to make the final law?
The law against WAR
SO that we can move forward in peace?
Didn't God create Physics if God created the World?
So then......God=Science=Math=Physics?
God=Truth=Math=Science=Physics=Law....etc...AND ETC.
God doesn't seem so complicated to me.....God=Truth=Geometry=Math......
Anyway you get my drift.
I recommend all ltra Orthodox religions look at the fossil record
That humans have unearthed, and found falling out of eroded rock.
Pliosaur......it's not in the Torah.
But it should be.

I am just now coming to this video. I am Muslim and part of the LGBTQ community. Seeing your friend talk about how she was essentially shunned, brought back quite a bit of trauma from the rejection I went through at my own Muslim community. I am fortunate that my parents and family never shunned me, but the rejection I faced at my local mosque was horrible. In one immediate decision, one that I wasn't a part of, I lost a lot of friends, and was told that I can still attend prayers and Jummah, but I had to sit and pray in the back closest to the doors, and leave before anyone else, and to not talk to anyone. In turn no one would speak to me or even acknowledge my presence. I will say that you made a wonderful documentary and were very respectful to the community. I am glad however that you didn't sugarcoat the negative things. Please keep doing wonderful work.
So sorry you had to go through that. I hope you have more peace and joy in your life now.

Prayer is pointless. Proven to be equally effective as doing nothing at all. If anyone really thought it worked, why wouldn't you collectively pray to end cancer??? About 25 years ago, I went to a Voice of the Turtle concert at a synagogue in Minneapolis. Most of the attendees were elderly Polish Jews speaking Polish. I sat next to one of them, and since I speak both German and Spanish, I was able to translate the Ladino lyrics into German for my neighbor, and he would answer in Yiddish.

Judaism is a peaceful religion , Zionism came after in the 1940's , Zionism is this idea that peaceful Jews are weak and Jews need to fight and defend , its ideology is similar to jihad , the problem is that Zionism is not a real religion , it was created by the British secret service ( Mi6 ) and the Americas ( CIA ) after WW2 , its essentially a man made ideology with secular and communist foundations that calls for a homeland , so its a man made religion just like Mormonism or Freemasonry , but Zionism has its own beauty , its got its own unique history , in any case I respect both Zionist and ultra conservative has disc Jews , both follow the same rules
