> I mentioned suburbs of the 1950s. It's more like the 1930s.
> Brooklyn is in Kings County (with an s). Thanks for everyone who pointed it out!
I was about to say about correction of sayings “Kings County” 😂 lol but thanks for a correction anyway. But I ain’t from Brooklyn, although I have families who lives in Brooklyn
Born and raised in Brooklyn, it was almost like nails on a chalkboard to hear “king county“ as opposed to “Kings County“… the correction made me feel all better! Thank you for your wonderful Work!
All the Brooklyn Chinatowns share one thing in common: They're all on the N or D lines. Basically Chinatown cares more about subway access then geographic proximity.
The Homecrest one is off the Q, not the D or N, but yeah, subway access on all!
Oh you're right! :O
What about the R at 53rd st & 59th st
@@langstonreese7077 That area is more Hispanic with a bit of spillover.
The R too
Omg you actually mentioned the micro-neighborhoods I grew up in, Homecrest and Madison. 9:38 :O
I just want to quickly mention how I always get frustrated when I hear outsiders talk about Brooklyn, but they're usually only talking about like the Northern parts of it, while completely ignoring the rest of Brooklyn. So thank you for making this video. Really helps break some of the stereotypes that are out there.
Oh and it's Kings County, not King County.
yoooo, i’m in madison too,,,,,,
I feel exactly the same way, thank you for this comment.
I grew up in sheepshead bay and feel seen
I actually live in Southwestern Brooklyn 5 minutes away from the Verrazano Bridge closer to Staten Island. It would say my neighborhood is 75% Chinese 25% Italian. I’m like in the Dyker,Bath Beach Bensonhurst area. I love it since I was first born 21 years ago. Thinking about how much it changed since the 1950s all Italian Americans came to Bensonhurst and years later try Chinese would take over bath beach and Bensonhurst! I wouldn’t say Bensonhurst itself, sunset park has Chinatown. If you think about it a few neighborhoods in Brooklyn have different cultures. Let’s start with a few neighborhoods that have different nationalities
1. Bay Ridge: Islamic/Turkish
2. Sunset Park: Mexican,Chinese
3. Borough Park, Williamsburg,Midwood: Jewish
4. Bensonhurst:Chinese,Italian, American, Mexican, Islam/Turkish
5. Bedford Stuyvesant, Downtown Brooklyn, East New York,Canarsie,Crown Heights: African American, Jamaican, Haitian
6. Brighton Beach,Manhattan Beach, Russian.
Just to name a few neighborhoods with different nationalities.
I knew there was some Russian in Brooklyn because I know a few Russians that lived in enclaves in Brooklyn. Wouldn't have thought so though. I'm kind of surprised about the Chinese, I thought they were mostly in Queens... but then again Chinatown is just over the Manhattan Bridge.
@@JimAllen-Personago to Brighton beach and try to find anyone who isn’t Russian or from that region 😂
Spot on comment
@@danielb3293 Who me??
On the county name it’s Kings as it’s Queens. Both are plural. I believe King County is in Washington-in the Seattle area.
If you google Brooklyns original towns you will see why the street grid is laid out the way it is.
Williamsburg was at one point a separate city within Brooklyns modern borders.
Back then the city of Brooklyn was mostly what is downtown and a few surrounding areas. But eventually Williamsburg couldn’t hack it and Brooklyn annexed it.
Bingo!
Awesome video! You should totally do a version of this on queens, staten island, and the Bronx!
Even in Manhattan.
@@jetfan925she already did
The Halloween decorations in Dyker Heights is awesome too! Especially 11th to 13th ave and 83rd to 86th st
I live not too far from primary Dyker Heights area! I’m closer to 14th Avenue by the golf course!!
Thank you, we will be in NY for Halloween and we will follow your recommendation! Greetings from Berlin!
@@silviav.6233 Dyker Heights is such a beautiful neighborhood. I grew up there all my life 21 years ago. March will be 22 years since I lived in Dyker
Great video! I would love to see a similar video for Queens, the Bronx and Staten Island!
She's done a lot of Queens... I think one on the Bronx and one on Staten Island.
Something majorly important that is missing form this video is the amazing and long standing African American, Caribbean, and African communities in Brooklyn. Many in some of the places that are now being gentrified. One in particular is Fort Greene and Bed Stuy. Spike Lee is from Fort Greene and Chris Rock is from Bed Stuy. Not to mention Jay-Z, Biggie, Lil Kim, and many other influential hip hop artists are from Brooklyn.
*from this video
This isn't a black channel. There are plenty of basketball, Rap and Gangsta channels for you to choose from on UA-cam. 😁
video is definitely from the perspective of a transplant. Bushwick is not just a "hipster"neighborhood. lot of immigrant and native older families living there.
@@sheepbay3silly racist always open on the web never in person and Caribbean people don’t play basketball we actually like soccer and cricket 😊
Jay-Z went to my middle school in williamsburg
I was under the impression it was Kings county and not King county.
The first IKEA piece I purchased was a LYCKSELE "sleeper sofa" / futon. I got it at the Elizabeth, NJ store, which was the first one in the NYC metro area.
Sleep sofa is a classic
I wish you had given a bigger shoutout to Eastern Brooklyn i.e. Canarise Park, Haitian and Dominican Populations, etc. Also shoutout to Mill Basin! My friends and I took a day trip there to see what its like. EVERY house is HUGE and has a pool, who woulda known?
I don’t know why but I’m just so obsessed with New York
I live in Brownsville at the border of East Flatbush off of East 98th Street on Hegeman ave. There is the 3 elevated on Livonia ave and two L stops at Livonia and New Lots Ave. There is subway service for most.
Your videos are so entertaining and educational!
You really covered the entire borough and made it relatively easy to understand where the different neighborhoods are located. Very nicely narrated.
Love this vid. Much love from Chicago!
Great work.
Such a well composed video with bite sized clumps of information. Good job Young Lady!!!
Wow, good video. I lived in Brooklyn for years, and haven’t heard about half the things you mentioned!
Checking in from Park Slope! Love your videos. :)
Thank you for the info young lady 😊
thank you. i travel to NYC regularly and have started getting off the island as often as i can now
love this content!
Love your videos!!😁😁😁
I love your videos.
I am interested in a similar video on Queens. Loved this one.
I'm a New York buff (for no specific reason)... And I love your videos... TYSM... Great work, keep it up
Very nice video about the layout of Brooklyn.. I will be spending a big majority of my vacation there in November! Thanks for sharing beautiful lady 😘😘😘xox
Thank you for this video ❤! Please do the same for the other boroughs
Great video! Also thumbs up for including Warpaint concert ;)
Hi Thea thanks for the history of the neighborhoods in Brooklyn. Even though I was born in Brooklyn, I didn't realize all these different neighborhood names. One fact from 41st to 44th Street between 5th and 7th Avenue I grew up going to Sunset Park swimming pool there. I just realized Sunset Park is a landmark in NYC now. Great video as always big thumbs up 😎👍
Enjoyed the video, it's Kings county not King county.
Yes being a Brooklyn Knight born and bred, that triggered me🤣🤣
@@Des_Zee 🤣🤣 Not that hard... Kings, Queens and Richmond. I guess Staten Island is Richmond just like the city is Virigina is Richmond.
This is very informative! Some comments:
1. Marine park and its salt marsh are popular areas, and the latter is one of the best places to escape the feeling of being in the city
2. Southern brooklyn above the beaches has a large middle eastern Jewish community with many middle eastern restaurants
3. Southern Sheepshead Bay has many fantastic restaurants by/near the waterfront
4. Northern Sheepshead Bay has a small chinatown
I Ive friends that live in Brooklyn so when I visit NYC I see more of it than Manhattan nowadays. I love that I always find some new neighbourhood or district with every visit
You forgot to mention kings plaza and how hard it is to get there without a car or connecting with a bus
The Utica Avenue Subway Extension can’t come fast enough!
Same with Gateway Mall near Spring Creek!
It's not that hard. But the buses can be a pain sometimes.
Thank you! Visiting from Kentucky, have an Airbnb in Brownsville with my mom, great to see the options.
You might want to change those reservations...Brownsville isn't exactly "tourist friendly".
Brownsville is one of the highest crime areas in NYC-an indisputable fact. Check the data.
Try Harlem instead!
Damnnn good luck out there.
Brooklyn is really interesting. Haven't been to Coney Island in 10 years!
I like her! I think she does a really good job
Thanks for this great video
Can you please do the same for the other 4 boroughs 🙏
that everyone wears black is also a stereotype about Berlin. but its actually only true for a subgroup of the 'cool' people, not hipsters in general but rather certain scenes (this mixture of many artists, BDSM, anarchic, metal, punk and the huge electronic club people scenes (in which the Berghain club is part of. its true that it is at least more likely to wear a kinky black like dress to get in))
You should do a video about two fare neighborhoods in New York City. I grew up in old mill basin which is two miles from the nearest subways so I always had to drive or take the b100 to a train station. Or the BM1 to downtown or midtown.
Don’t know if anyone corrected you, but Brooklyn is KINGS county. King county is out is Washington state. Just sayin’…
*in Washington State
Bergen Beach is a very interesting neighborhood. It used to be an island
I grew up in Midwood, which also has a huge Orthodox Jewish community (along with ones not mentioned in Crown Heights and Williamsburg.) Fun fact is that the Jews who live there will say they live in Flatbush and the term Midwood is rarely used.
I live in Midwood and I noticed this too. What is the reason for this?
You should do one of these for the other boroughs too
I love your videos they taught me to know New York better, but I wanted to know where is the video that presents all the districts of queens I know I saw it but it is not accessible from the page of the channel or by looking for it
Hi there. There isn't a Queens video yet. My current computer can't handle the graphics. As soon as I upgrade, I'll make sure to make a Queens video ASAP.
OK thanks for your answer
When I lived in Jersey I would often get a Nathans Jones, an addiction to Coney Island Franks. I would drive from Perth Amboy (Outerbridge Crossing) up Staten Island to the Verazano. Then a quick ride to Atlantic Ave and Ocean Pkwy then the mecca of all things Amurcan, A Nathans' Coney Island hot dog. My grandmother's stepdad was an architect who designed the Borough Park development. It more than paid the bills for the family! Other than that, I got lost in Bay Ridge once wandering off the beaten Belt Parkway. On another note, why don't you like roller coasters? You don't have to like them for sure, but maybe give them another try. Maybe. A suggestion.
Thank you for mentioning Windsor terrace and Kensington and not saying “where?”
Thank you so much for showcasing Brooklyn. I may be biased, but IMO, It's the best borough in NYC. It has it's own character and attitude that you don't find anywhere else.
Hi Urban Caffeine, I have a question that might required some "New Yorking", is there a historical reason why many hospitals are located along the East River on the East side of Manhattan, or why there is a cluster of hospitals in central Brooklyn? Some of these are old hospitals, so I don't think they are build for the residential demographic needs of today, but I can't seem to find any reason why they are there.
Also along with the theme of Brooklyn, can you talk about the history the large area of buildings along the Upper New York Bay, such as Navy Yard and Army Terminals?
Another video idea, can you please talk about the area between Greenpoint and LIC, they have all kinds of industrial sites over there but also many luxury lofts, converted apartments, and glitzy newly built apartments. I don't explore that area.
How about the area of New York along Long Island Sound (the Bronx side and the Queens side) or all the areas between Manhattan and Bronx along the Harlem River?
Was "Do The Right Thing" filmed in Bed-Stuy?
A long time ago like 20 years, lol. Williamsburg was just that. Their was no East Williamsburg. I can go on about the changes "gentrification" but overall some changes were for the better.
I was asking myself that same question...when did Williamsburg split?!🤔
Very informative! Thanks for posting. There’s one thing that I’d like to clarify. It’s a bit imprecise to say that Borough Park is a Jewish neighborhood. Borough Park is predominantly Hasidic. There are Jewish people living throughout NYC, and there are many different sects and denominations. However, the Hasidic movement is a particular sect within the Jewish community. They are especially insular, and their customs are unique. They are recognizable by their distinctive attire.
Kings county***
Good stuff..
(Kings County)
There are some very interesting and unique homes in Mill Basin as well as some stories about the people living there. One of them had a manned guard shack, lots of cameras, and two German Sheppards on guard and it was just a residential home. Also, the former home of a Russian heiress and later owned by a mobster.
Hey Thea same name as my sister btw, I have to correct you on King County which is incorrect. As a person who was born and raised in Bklyn it's KINGS County.
I think you do a good job and no it’s not possible to cover EVERYTHING in an 11 minute video. With that said, how could you not discuss Bed-Stuy in your break down?
Also, I would really talk about how accessible skill development courses are in Brooklyn. To me, that's the #1 item in Brooklyn.
I used to live in 17th St., Prospect Park West. I miss there so much. But at the same time I’m happy also to have my own home in Maryland and not stuck in an apartment; everything has its pros and cons.
I have the same issue pronouncing “Gowanus” the same way as “Uranus”.
If you tell a foreigner that Manhattan Beach is not in Manhattan they would look at you crazy. 😂
You can actually walk into Queens from certain areas of Brooklyn. Some people reside in Brooklyn and their neighbors across the street are in Queens.
I’ve walked from Williamsburg to Sunnyside in Queens before! Quite the hike but it’s do-able lol
I'd consider Crown Heights and Bed Stuy to be more grouped than Bed Stuy and Williamsburg.
Wrong. Atlantic Ave is a pretty big divide. People don’t really cross it that much. So although demographically, they are(were) similar, they are still distinct. Bedstuy is large, and a bit of transit desert and the subways run a long the peripheries, so it isn’t well connected to crown heights despite the geographical nearness
I lived in Mill Basin for two years and it was the furthest thing from Hipsterland you could imagine, kind of like an upscale Russian mob suburb. Also wanted to mention that a lot of the SoBro nabes have express buses which run to Manhattan for "easy access".
South Brooklyn is not sobro I'm sorry
Is it Russian though? I was always under the impression that it was Italian.
@@professional.commentator There is a huge Russian Jew community who aren't mobbed up but there are multiple garish McMansions which are probably owned by some kind of high end gangsters.
The borough of Brooklyn in the state of New York is also known as Kings County, not King County. The letter s on the end of it's name makes a difference. King County is in the state of Washington in the northwest across the border from British Columbia, Canada.
The hipster thing is overblown to me. Good job breaking down Brooklyn!!
Park Slope/Windsor Terrace! Represent!
I'd say Greenpoint is now a Hipster neighborhood with some Polish mixed in!
3:30 didn't Bed-Stuy use to be a very dangerous hood in like the 90s that gave rise to the Notorious BIG? Surprised it didn't get mentioned.
Great video. My father was born in Brooklyn and grew up in Flatbush. He attended Midwood High School (Class of 1953). My grandparents eventually moved to Long Beach after my grandfather retired and I have fond memories of visiting them as a kid 😃
That's cool. I actually attended Midwood HS as well. Class of 2015 here.
@@professional.commentator Cool. I'll bet the school has changed a LOT in 70 years! I have a copy of a Midwood HS publication called 'Patterns - Semi-Annual Literature & Art Publication of Midwood High School' dated June 1952. My father was a staff artist.
Please discuss the rezoning in relation to the history as reasons why the areas are changing into "hipster" neighborhoods it's about economics.. All areas were developed around industries. The industries have left since the 60's but the people who built the neighborhoods who haven't been priced out are still there.
Hipsters only moved around 15 years ago in BK
Brooklyn was an independent city.
💯💯💯💯💯
Thea with Scary Glasses = Nega Thea?
KINGSSSSS County!
I have to correct you. What you have labeled on your map as South Brooklyn is actually Southern Brooklyn. South Brooklyn would be the neighborhoods of Red Hook and Carroll Gardens. What is now the borough of Brooklyn was once separate independent cities and towns. Only the northwest part of the borough was called Brooklyn, and the south part of it, what is now Red Hook and Carroll Gardens, was called South Brooklyn. Coney Island was part of the town of Gravesend. It wouldn't have been called South Brooklyn.
👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼🥰🌟🌟🌟🌟
Correction:
Kings county not King county
mention Brooklyn's chinatown in Bensonhurst N ... D trains ,,,,, "so this is Aisa"
It's actually King's County
"They said the Queens could stay: they blew the Bronx away, and sank Manhattan out at sea" - Billy Joel

Sure did! You actually noticed. 😁
@@UrbanCaffeine congratulations!! Not to sound weird but your teeth look great! Hope it’s more comfortable now too ❤️
Bedstuy and Bushwick supremacy 😅
My father in law was told by a cop back in the 60's never to enter the borough again after almost getting a ticket. For the most part, I've stuck with that policy. Seems to work for me.
"Kings County", not "King". Come on, get it together.
Bruh Flatbush is the hood what you even saying
Doesn’t Williamsburg have a jewish community though?
they gentrified my whole area smh and yall celebrate this shit
