rOne of the greatest of a generation of aging Irish folk singers. They were certainly a dedicated lot. A lot of them have passed on now. We are fortunate we have their voices preserved by the recording industry.
My parents (RIP) were Irish and I can recall listening to this song as a kid many times, with all my Uncles, Guinness bottles every where and plenty of Irish rebel songs playing - now only happy memories, its great song.
I spent many a night listening to Paddy at the Century club in Falmouth , Mass. He is the master of the Irish ballad. His many songs express themes from the plight of migrant workers to unrequited love. All beautifully done. I hope someone has made him as happy as he has made we who listen
Irish People including Myself have left home to live in America & Britain & this Song is about a Man living in America & never returned, remembering his Old Irish Home.
Being half Irish and half Italian I've heard all of that before too. Both sets of grandparents as well as my father are immigrants to the U.S.A. and it's true there was no work in Ireland or Italy when they left Spancil Hill is written about a man who left Ireland but was not allowed to take the woman he wanted to marry with him because her father would not allow it. The song is about his longing to be home in Ireland with his people and his girl. Kind of like those Italians.
My mum broke her heart to this song every time she played this, her brother sang this with his mates in pubs in mayo foxford, at parties etc he was 38 he was shot dead in 1987 by the ira. Both sorely missed. Now i break my heart💔
I LIKED THE BLARNEY FOLK I MCD 2 CONCERTS FOR THEM ONE IN LYNN AND ONE IN ANDOVER WE HAD A GREAT TIME!! HAPPY TIMES.GREAT CRACK AT THE HARP AND BARD WITH HAMISH IMLALACH !!!
@neckozeusa The song Spancil Hill is about an irishman who goes seeking his fortune in the California goldrush, and who in his dreams remembers his life in Ireland. Ride On is a song by another Irish balladeer called Christy Moore. Ride On is a song that can invoke different veiws in different people, lost love, the passing of a loved one, it is a song that is haunting in melody and lyrics.
@neckozeusa Basically this song is about Irish immigrants to America who settled in California, but were lonely for their home in Ireland, in the Stancill Hill area.
I love this song, but I don't know about what is this song.I'm from Bosnia and don't know Ireland history. Please, anyone who can gave me more info for this song and song Ride on.Thanks

So many memories i have with this song, my father sang it to us as children , he loved Ireland, but rests in England, where i had to go to earn a living , many many years ago R.I.P daddy
spancil is a rope used to tie animal legs together to stop them wondering too far. so its actually an english word . Spancilhill came from the irish word uarchail which came from the words uair coille which means cold wood
@parade0000 And just because the USA HAS jobs doesn't make it NOT a better place. If I were ever to move to Italy or Ireland I would respect it 1000%. I'd never utter a bad word about it because I chose to move there and would never be so disrespectful of another country. Unfortunately the USA doesn't get the same respect from some people that come here. Not all, but some. and why? for being the country that allows them to live and prosper? It's kind of crazy when you think about it.
@parade0000 No you had it right the first time. My neighbors insult this country all the time. Complain, complain. America isn't as beautiful as Italy, Italy is SO beautiful. America has only 6 months of unemployment insurance, it's terrible here! Meanwhile in Italy they'd starve. And just as an FYI there are stunningly beautiful places right here in America. I get tired of people making a lovely living in this country but trashing it with every breath.

Paddy Reilly is one of the greatest Irish singers of all time, hands down.

@neckozeusa Basically this song is about Irish immigrants to America who

@Ravbo1 Have to agree, Jim McCann can't be beaten at Spancil Hill but Paddy runs him a close second. Both guys give their all when singing.

WTF had Eammon just been electricuted? lol
if spancil is an irish lingo word, why is it not pronounced span-kil instead of span-sil?
and what does it mean?
spancil is a rope used to tie animal legs together to stop them wondering too far. so its actually an english word . Spancilhill came from the irish word uarchail which came from the words uair coille which means cold wood
Good man Brian. Keep the language, and it's meanings, alive.
Spancil Hill is a place in Quin, Ireland. Theres an annual fair there

@iamcinderella1 u need to go back to school and re-learn ur maths lol
I thought he sounded american lol
missed a verse boy
Last night as I lay dreaming of pleasant days gone by
Me mind being bent on rambling, to Ireland I did fly
I stepped on board a vision, and I followed with a will
'Til next I came to anchor at the cross at Spancil Hill
It being on the 23rd of June, the day before the fair
When Ireland's sons and daughters and friends assembled there
The young, the old, the brave and the bold came, their duty to fulfill
At the parish church in Clooney, a mile from Spancil Hill
I went to see me neighbors, to see what they might say
The old ones were all dead and gone, the young ones turning gray
But I met the tailor Quigley, he's as bold as ever still
Ah, he used to mend me britches when I lived in Spancil Hill
I paid a flying visit to my first and only love
She's as white as any lily, gentle as a dove
And she threw her arms around me saying, "Johnny, I love you still"
As she's Nell the farmer's daughter and the pride of Spancil Hill
I dreamed I held and kissed her as in the days of yore
Ah Johnny, you're only jokin', as many's the time before
Then the cock, he crew in the morning, he crew both loud and shrill
I awoke in California, many miles from Spancil Hill
