I am from Costa Rica but I have lived in New Jersey for nearly 25 years. In the town that I live there is a large community of people from Ireland.I have many Irish friends. They are kind, humble and hard working people.A long ago I had the pleasure of seeing Paddy Reilly at the Bar Irish Cottage in West Orange playing his good music. He went up to the bar with his violin and began to delight us with beautiful songs but one in special caught my attention "The Fields of Athenry"..... This Sunday,March 13/2022 the 69th West Orange St. Patrick's Day Parade will be held at 12 midday. 🙏 😀
i am 25 and wish i was born about 20 years earlier so i could have witnessed paddy reilly play live as well as the dubliners, there is just no music like this anymore, unreal,
I used to frequent the Dubliner in Washington, DC. Paddy was friends with the owner and came often to that bar. I spent hundreds of hours listening to Paddy in a barroom. No better setting for Irish music, and no one better to be singing than Paddy.
it's OK being born then to witness him playing live. but you'd be handling the struggles, the North 'Doire ' but knew where would an wouldn't be safe. being Catholic living in West coast ya know ya man nxt yous but further south leaving Dublin in 72' after the Party divided cause ya man Adams wanted none of it. I was just legal and answered the call, fw was training off to Arboe. Co, Tyrone. ya can't trust anyone apart from small few. You wouldn't have wanted the rest of what came with those times 😢 . in 84' after going Doire at 15yrs old. life was never the same . you didn't miss a whole lot dear .❤
True but they never want you back home after they took your hard earned money and they stole your land and give themselves double barrel names become low life barristers on your blood sweat and tears tell you you can get a meal from the salvation army while they have meals for fourteen which them all they wish themselves from a old old galway girl xxx
My long missed ‘Pop’ left Kilrush, County Clare as a young Man in the 1930’s. Like many others all he had was empty pockets, a head full of dreams, a strong back and a desperate desire to live a better life! His only regret was having to leave to do it! He made a life and a Family, had many adventures and together with many other ‘Paddys’ worked his way from Building site to Building site, rebuilding another Mans Country,While his was waiting for the ‘Celtic Tiger’ to roar! He would have loved to see how Ireland has progressed, and it’s people living in a peaceful and far more prosperous Society than back in the hard times he left.He never managed to make that long, long Journey back,(he died due to complications caused by falling from a ‘WIMPY’s Scaffolding that failed) aged 58 in the early 70’s.I miss him every day,but this song can bring him back to my memory in a heartbeat,They worked damn hard, but they could ‘play’ just as well and my overall memory of growing up ‘Manchester Irish’ is of Love,Laughter and pride!
im an american boy. but im irish to the bone. all my family is irish and this song brings tears to my eyes. and just once want to see the homeland. "the roots that tie me to a land ive never know are calling me home"
I met Paddy a few weeks ago in a pub in Dublin. Still in good form and looking well. I remember him singing at a regular gig in Liberty Hall, Dublin every Friday Night way back in 1967. He always sang Deportees and James Connolly.. As a Clare man I love this song that was written by an English man Ralph McTell.
Ralph met a Young Clare Lad on that Building Site.. the lad was about seventeen / eighteen barley shaving putting up 'Shuttering' Pans ... Ralph asked him how thing were with him and how he was doing ... he replied," It's a Long ... Long... Way from Clare to Here.." ... that stuck with him and formed the link that played out in those Lyrics thus he gathered together snippets of what those Irish Navvies were saying, ''Er getting up late on Sundays i never get Mass" ... too tired to write a letter back to home and the like, all prime source historical material from a generation that's now early before their time ...'Building up and Tearing England Down"... ua-cam.com/video/BqATmWWFNSE/v-deo.html
Just a simply marvelous song, makes me long for Clare, the Cliffs, the crosses and castles, rivers and hills ... I have just got to get back, soon, real soon
Everybody chasing their dreams been over here for years now on building sites not really much work back west always reminds me of home ❤🇮🇪🇮🇪🇮🇪🇮🇪🇮🇪🇮🇪🇮🇪🇮🇪🇮🇪🇮🇪🇮🇪
Replace Clare with east London and "here" with NW Australia and it sums up my current situation. Beautiful song. Grew up listening to Paddy Reilly but finally can understand the sentiment of songs like this and deportees.
@joeygsmom: Spot on - well said! It's a gift - and I can only add a word of deepest thanks to machree, to Linda - to all those so talented who have given us so many riches to savour! Many thanks! from a grand daughter out of County Clare
I'm a young lad 25 have listen to paddy riley since iv been about 4 or year old and love him not many my age is in to this music but I'd pick this over any old hip hop when I get drunk I let paddy riley go to top of my voice and sing an old tune or 2 would love the cd paddy riley at the national stadium in Dublin but can't get it in England any 1 over in Ireland send it to me would be much appreciated and would pay for cd and postage kind regards

@eoinzy11 I came home to the bog 1 year ago and will NEVER leave. (i'm only irish though my great grandparent's and had never been here but now i'm here I aint going any where. END OF:))
This of one my favourite profound and philosophical Irish saying. Often use it as a business analogy too. You can't get to where you want to be if you don't know where you are today. In a simpler sense it just makes me laugh every time I hear it or say it with the cheeky Irish irony of the phrase. Thanks for reminding me and helping my laugh on a tough morning.
I'm a jackeen but the only place I would love to be is along the West coast of Clare and I have to include Kinvarra Galway. First went there with my only true love, a Kinvarra lass A Mc Cor.....17 yes ago.
Why is the chap living in London, if he is missing Clare so much. I guess the song is about an Irish chap and his girlfriend Clare who is missing, quite sad really. Is he a football fan ,cos he goes on about missing the match on the Sunday?
gingerjoe1972 . Indeed this is a sad song. it is a story about a man from County Clare living in England. In the 1950s irish people emigrated to England to work and escape poverty. Many thrived but many did not. Of those misfortunate some got caught in a vicious circle of working and drinking. Enough time passed and they were too ashamed to go home or contact their families. Sad indeed 😔
15 years now since I left Ireland. Living in America! Hits hard during the holidays. Great song!
14 in January for me. Here in NC. Love this version. Left from Shannon, Co. Clare, named my American born daughter Claire.
I hope our crazy country is treating you both well.

I so agree...Paddy is the best!
I used to frequent the Dubliner in Washington, DC. Paddy was friends with the owner and came often to that bar. I spent hundreds of hours listening to Paddy in a barroom. No better setting for Irish music, and no one better to be singing than Paddy.
The best balladeer of them all. Luke was fantastic God rest him but I think Paddy Reilly was the best.
