The Irish and the Spanish Nations have been intertwined for centuries. Love and respect from a Brit. With Irish/ Scots Heritige

It amazes me how appropriate a High Spaniard's accent is for Irish music.

@@richardjames5006 Were we not from Macedonia via Scotland when a land bridge existed between Scotland and Northern Ireland, there is a Celtic connection with the French Bretons and Spanish Catalonia regions, all of that said Helena does a great job on all our songs and I for one think she could hold her own with any version. Stay Safe Richard.

As a Brit, I am always moved here tears when I hear such ballads , it must be the Scots / Irish descent.
But I am a proud Scouser. The Irish and the Spanish Nation have a wonderful intertwined history

This moving song has a tragic back story:
The author of "Spancillhill", Michael Considine, was born around 1850 and emigrated to the USA from Spancillhill around 1870. Working in Boston for about two years, he went to the USA with the intention of bringing his sweetheart over and for them to be married when he had made enough money for the passage. "Johnny you're only jokin'...." a line from the current version, in the original, of course, reads... "Mike you're only jokin' " His sweetheart was "Matt the Rangers Daughter" and not Matt the Farmers daughter as in the popularised version. The Rangers house was visible from Michael Considine's house as was the Taylor Quigley's.
He stayed in Boston for two years or so before moving to California. He suffered from ill health for a long time and, knowing he hadn't long to live, he wrote the poem "Spancilhill" to send home in rememberence of his love and it was kept safe by his 6 year old nephew, John Considine.
Michael Considine died sometime in 1873. And it seems he go home somehow (I don't know yet whether it was dead or alive) as he is buried in Spancilhill garveyard, close to where Robbie has a little plot chosen.

Ireland and Spain have strong social and historical links in pre recorded history, and then again after the Reformation, particularly when Henry VIII declared himself head of the Church of England.
Enough history, I am enjoying your interpretation of Irish songs Helena.

Thank you for a great version of one of the best of the many Irish emigrant songs and thanks too to those who provided the backstory. Here in Hull many of the Irish who had fled the Great Hunger in the mid 19th century arrived here just as the cholera struck. The death toll was very high and many are buried in the Western Cemetery.

Once again my day has been made by the magically redolent and thrilling exquisite performance of an amazing Fairy Princess. To miss enjoying such Angelic wonderful voice merged with soul-solacing melody would be a grevious blunder indeed.
Thanks an affluent cluster and the best of appreciation to you, Helen.
Keep your incredible charisma in perfect humdinger and your talent au par.
Divine blissful fortunes to imbue you and pave the way for you onward.
