If you hold to the theory that BenJen Stark knew the truth about Lyanna and Jon Snow, it's quite possible that Aemon knew too, or at least suspected. Targaryens seem to be almost be able to smell Taragryen blood.

Contrast Aemon talking about the woman he loved against King Robert talking about Lyanna. Robert was only infatuated with Lyanna and in the end he couldn't even remember what she looked like after 20 years, while Aemon could picture his love as clear as day probably 80+ years later.
He was 93, not far off from the actual age of Aemon himself! They took a risk in casting him, as he was already 87 when he started playing the character in 2010. I believe that this is one of the saddest deaths in Game of Thrones. Only character that dies of old age, and so emotional. RIP Aemon & Peter Vaughan (the actor that played him). Their watch has ended.
This episode was such a great pleasure to watch. Thx a lot for the uploading. The actor that embodied this character added a gravitas to Aemon Targaryen that I hardly remember to have seen before in other movies, tv shows or theater plays
Even worse when the writers couldn’t be bothered to write a scene of Dany and Jon talking about him, just more dick jokes and throwing fuck into every sentence
Maester Aemon was one of the wisest men in Westeros. He was humble, restrained, and firm. Yet, for all this, he was right to give up the Iron Throne. Aemon Targaryen knew that too many hands reaching for the same sword would result in a great many bloody stumps. Maester Aemon was even offered the chance to serve on the small council, as an advisor to his brother Aegon V. He refused because he knew that his connection to the king would make him and his family a target for corruption. He was truly an exceptional, extraordinary man. Rest in Peace old man...you earned it.
God Bless Peter Vaughn, he was a wonderful actor with great range and an even better speaking voice. No one could have played his role as the old Maester better and no one could have rivaled him. He gave the character such depth to enable fantasy to become reality. May he rest in peace. By the way, he gave Sir Anthony Hopkins a run for his money in The Remains of the Day (1995).
Imagine if Aemon HAD taken the throne. One king, ruling for almost 80 years . . . doing away with all the reigns of Aegon the Unlikely, Jaehaerys II, the Mad King, Robert, Joffrey, and Tommen . . . he would've been a good king, too, but the people best suited for power are the ones who distance themselves from it.
He says to John - "What is Honour in front of woman's love, what is duty against the feeling of newborn child"... Only when you see S06E10 to realize what it really means

He's an amazingly tragic character. It, along with the heart-wrenching final scene, with that little "Egg, I dreamed that I was young", fucking killed me. He thinks he's back to his happy youth with his brother who he loved, telling Egg that the reality he is in right now is but dream. His last moments are a retreat into his loving past. Its agonisingly sad.

"Love is the death of duty" - he would have seen the consequence of that with Reygar. Knowing what we know now, when he speaks to John about it, it's especially it's quiet profound.
actually, I think Rhaegar believed he was performing his duty since he thought his child with Lyanna would be the prince that was promiced. He was obsessed with that prophecy.
Quick note in show Aemon Targaryen is the uncle of Aerys Mad King and great uncle of Daenerys and Viserys. In the books he is great uncle of Mad King they skip a generation, Jaehaerys II Targaryen who reign for three years. He was nephew of Aemon Targaryen and Jaehaerys was the father of Mad King not Aegon V Targaryen the only thing show got right is Aegon V (aka Egg) was his brother. So fact he is great, great uncle to Dany and Viserys, Rhaegar and if theory is true he great, great, great uncle to Jon Snow.
It seemed like Aemon had more scenes. Maybe he just had a larger-than-life presence :) But you still missed his greatest line: "I will not tell you to stay or go. You must make that choice yourself, and live with it for the rest of your days...as I have."
Aemon knew John was special, smart and pure since he's from the most noble house Stark. Or, Aemon knew John was family, since Aemon has access to book and the citadel. Either way, John just happens to be in the right place at the right time also.
Maester Aemom has the wisest lines in all of television history. His lines were not only so wise but so amazingly delivered. I cant imagine anyone but Peter Vaughan as Maester Aemon.
Part of me really wants to see a scene of Sam sat down with Daenarys, telling her all about Maester Aemon, and how he’d followed news of her ( 12:45 )... Then again, Dany killed Sam’s father and brother - that’s bound to be a real sticking point in S8, with Sam being so close to Jon. I’d assume Sam loved his brother at least.
Aemon was definitely one of the best. Kind, smart as hell and wise, a good advisor and a man who devoted his life to helping others, not himself. The man who declined the Iron Throne. The King Who Never Was.
-What is duty against the feel of a newborn son in your arm-Foreshadowing -In every man`s life comes a day where is not easy,a day when he must choose-Harrenhal?He chose to save the wildlings even when the Night`s watch fought them for years -Love is the death of duty -Kill the boy,Jon Snow!winter is almost upon us.Kill the boy and let the man be born -A Targaryen, alone in the world. This is terrible thing -Egg, A dreams ....I was old(Didnt understood the other part)-Tyrion dreamt for a dragon since a kid,Does Aemon talks about Dragon egg After he died everything went wrong
I think he sais 'Aeg' . not Egg. referring to his younger brother Aegon V, the grandfather of Mad Aeres, and the succeeder after Aemon passed the throne.
King Aegon V, his younger brother, was nicknamed "Egg" because when he was a young boy, he shaved his head completely bald, hid his heritage and became a squire to Ser Duncan the Tall until he revealed himself to protect Duncan after he beat up his older brother Aerion Targaryen assaulted a girl puppeteer at a tourney. You can read the book anthology "A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms" or get the graphic novels that tells the story of Dunk and Egg. (I really would like to see HBO make a prequel mini series of these stories) :)
I love how much respect every single member of the Night’s Watch had for Maester Aemon. Even during one of the most divisive elections of a new Lord Commander, whenever Aemon needed to speak, they all fell silent to listen to every word.
I wonder who his one love was. He was very young, he said...she might have been the reason why he didn't want to be king, why he ended up in the nights watch. And, considering the authors obsession with bloodlines, the boy that resulted from that union may play a vital rhole in seasons to come...
I'm almost positive the moment before he died, when he said I dreamed I was an old man, is going to come back in season 8. Definitely feels important to the whole time thing with Bran.
" Love is the death of duty " in the end when he had to kill Dany in order to save the world from further destruction due to her wrath . Omg I love these videos it puts so much into perspective
I haven’t followed GOT episode to episode but watched it in passing.. somehow among all hue and cry among the main characters I somehow find Aemon best of all.. he is kind, clever, wise and most importantly he is unselfish.. Leaving right to throne is not easy.. most of us can’t even give up our last scoop of ice-cream and here is a man who not just gave up the rights but chose to live his life like a monk. The important word being CHOSE..
In a show about the highest seats in the land and the shiniest cloaks and most valuable swords- the only person who died of old age in his bed comforted by images of his family was a blind man who refused to be king of the world. Definitely a special character in the series
His death is one of the only changes from the book that I preferred, he gave his life to the watch, and it was only proper that he died there, amongst his brothers.
Thanx Kevin, great Aemon recap!! Got the BluRays for Xmas and havnt stopped since! Just enjoying vast selection on youtube for GOT junkies..May the Gods be Good!
"Love is the death of Duty" - What simple yet powerful words. You cannot send a man to war, to his death if he fears losing the chance to fulfill his dreams more than dying itself.
Aemons entire life and story mirrors Aegons/Jons story. When Jon "killed the boy" and became a man eg took winterfell, rallied the Kingdoms and defeated the dead or even killing Daenerys he always thought back to his grandfathers advice 'love is the death of duty' etc. Aegon refuses the throne just like Aemon and ends up as the last Targaryen at the nights watch just like Aemon. I always liked to think that a small part of Aemon always knew that Jon was his grandson and he would be proud knowing that he did indeed help his family at the end.

actually, I think Rhaegar believed he was performing his duty since he thought his child with Lyanna would be the prince that was promiced. He was obsessed with that prophecy.
Rhaegar - your welcome.
Peter Vaughan (currently aged 92) Legend!
+DaveC He did a brilliant job as one of my favourites.
RIP, he passed away on Dec 2016.
shazux I feel sad now
I miss the guy one of the smartest one in game of thrones. I hoe we see more flashbacks with him or something later in a prequal.
Thank you for this one, it made me cry to "remember". Very nice.
I love Maester Aemon’s voice but I love his wisdom and wit more.
You always know when a man is telling a lie how did you aquire this magical power?
Aemon Targaryen: I grew up in KIngs Landing.
Most beautiful character of them all. I wish I could grow up to be a 3rd like him. Hope I will pass as he does as well.
It seemed like Aemon had more scenes. Maybe he just had a larger-than-life presence :)
But you still missed his greatest line: "I will not tell you to stay or go.
I cant imagine anyone but Peter Vaughan as Maester Aemon.
peter vaughn absolutely nailed this role. such an incredible actor.
Thanks for making these videos man sometimes you need a refresher before watching the new season
"...and _dark things_ will come with it"
*glances at Season 8*
Thank you so much for putting this together, he said so much that I dint pay attention too.....
12:23 Interestingly, Aemon told his brother Aegon 5th (Egg) the same thing when he became king
"Kill the egg, and let the man be born"
i loved every episode with sam and maester
The man really should have been King of the 7 kingdoms!
Maester Aemon talking about the one who got away always makes cry a little no kizzy.
Isn't it ironical that both him and Jon were rightful heir to the iron throne and both of them refused it anyway.
Aemon was only the heir because his older brothers either died or didn’t have sons. (At least in the books)
Could have been a king, instead served the night's watch
Hey Kevin, Thanks so much for pulling these Rewinds together. Love it!
Aemon Targaryen is probably the purest person in all of Westeros. I am so glad that he was allowed to pass from old age.
Aemon was definitely one of the best. Kind, smart as hell and wise, a good advisor and a man who devoted his life to helping others, not himself. The man who declined the Iron Throne. The King Who Never Was.
-What is duty against the feel of a newborn son in your arm-Foreshadowing
-In every man`s life comes a day where is not easy,a day when he must choose-Harrenhal?He chose to save the wildlings even when the Night`s watch fought them for years
-Love is the death of duty
-Kill the boy,Jon Snow!winter is almost upon us.Kill the boy and let the man be born
-A Targaryen, alone in the world. This is terrible thing
-Egg, A dreams ....I was old(Didnt understood the other part)-Tyrion dreamt for a dragon since a kid,Does Aemon talks about Dragon egg
After he died everything went wrong
Aemon was one of my most favorite characters.
:( poor old man, i feeld so sad for him.
+Kastiel Cosplay He was the blood of the dragon, but his fire has gone out. And now his watch is ended. :(
+Kastiel Cosplay Be happy. He managed to do what no other character in Game of Thrones will ever be able to: he died of old age!
I love how much respect every single member of the Night’s Watch had for Maester Aemon.
Even during one of the most divisive elections of a new Lord Commander, whenever Aemon needed to speak, they all fell silent to listen to every word.
Magnificent video, thank you. I am re-watching my favourites, cheers!
I wonder who his one love was. He was very young, he said...she might have been the reason why he didn't want to be king, why he ended up in the nights watch. And, considering the authors obsession with bloodlines, the boy that resulted from that union may play a vital rhole in seasons to come...
lady tyrell
+Lawrence Bailey but how old is lady Tyrell? I'm sure she was waayyy too young for him, since he was like over 100 years old (apparently)
oAPXo you think they cared about age differences?
Quaith?
Nice thought, But If he was really young then she wasnt alive. I doubt
I always loved the line " I grow up in Kings landing "
I'm almost positive the moment before he died, when he said I dreamed I was an old man, is going to come back in season 8. Definitely feels important to the whole time thing with Bran.
Definitely not.
This was really good, he was one of my favorite characters, thank you for this.
Oh, I loved Maester Aemon. He was very honorable and wise. I wonder if he ever knew that Jon was a Targaryen.
Nice job! we will miss him!
"Starks are always right, eventually. Winter is Coming."
"LOL Nope, winter will barely last a week!" -D&D
Thanx Kevin, great Aemon recap!! Got the BluRays for Xmas and havnt stopped since! Just enjoying vast selection on youtube for GOT junkies..May the Gods be Good!
Absolutely loved him. Only time I shed a tear at a character death.
such an amazing character and so well acted.
Who knows, he might have been a dragon rider if he had taken the throne. He was such a pure soul
The most noblest man ever, gave up his crown and seve Kingdoms to help as a Maester(doctor) to the nights watch such sacrifice RIP old Dragon"!!!
I love how a man is the brother of aegon the fifth. I can’t wait for the hedge night series.
Actually Aemon is Jon’s Great Great Uncle
*"The Prince That Was Promised, who fled to the wall"*
Wonder what things would of changed had he not refused the throne
My favorite character tbh
I love his voice ..RIP Aemon Targaryen
Dude your posts are awesome. Its so nice to go back and get a refresher on past characters. Lots to keep up with. I forgot Gendry was still alive. Keep it up my friend. Very kewl!
One of the most underrated characters!
