The saddest part of the whole protecting Lyana from her brother was that they didn't need to die! No one had to die! They had to keep Jon (Aegon) a secret despite Rhaegar being dead. It was his last orders to them. If the regime fell, they were no longer kings guards anyway, which is exactly what happened. They were also in Dorne and Elia was just brutally murdered by the new regime, so they would probably garner huge respect there even full scale support for Aegon to win back his throne later in life. He was obsessed with prophecy. Everything he did, he did because he read it in a prophecy and believed he was the Prince who was Promised. He was born during the tragedy at Summerhall, amidst the flames. He wasn't even a warrior growing up, until he read that he had to be and went to the weapons master right after and told the guy to train him. He underestimated the rage of Robert by getting with his girl, in that respect, he was foolish. His father also escalated the rage of Ned and Robert by killing Brandon and Rickard Stark. When he had gotten Lyanna pregnant, he now had the third head of the dragon in his children. He was probably still Prophecy driven and thought himself invincible. His backup plan included keeping Lyanna and his third child alive to continue the prophecy should he die in battle. And, he did. Thats why the kingsguard fought anyone to protect them.
Ser Arthur Dayne's sword was already on the ground before he put his helm on. I guess he put it back in it's sheath so he can draw them both dramatically? Lol

The saddest part of the whole protecting Lyana from her brother was that they didn't need to die! No one had to die! They just had to be smart and talk about her situation and just be done with the whole calling Jon Ned's bastard! It's like Danny says sooo many times, brave men are fools! They die for reasons for which there needs to be no fighting for!
They had to keep Jon (Aegon) a secret despite Rhaegar being dead. It was his last orders to them. If the regime fell, they were no longer kings guards anyway, which is exactly what happened. They would have probably have had to raise Aegon and keep Lyanna safe. They were also in Dorne and Elia was just brutally murdered by the new regime, so they would probably garner huge respect there even full scale support for Aegon to win back his throne later in life. He was dark haired and would not stand out as a Targaryen until he revealed his true heritage when the time was right. But, Ned showed up with his buddies and....

I love the story of Jon’s heritage but I think Lyanna is a bit of hypocrite. She says She doesn’t want to marry Robert because he won’t stay in one bed, but then runs away with a married man.
Rob is way worse, he had a bunch of bastards before the war. Rhagar was promised to the Martel woman but got that marriage anulled. I also think Rob puts Lyanna to high of a pedestal and thinks she would have gone along with whatever he wanted but Lyanna was strong willed and did what she wanted

ReWatching the Tower of Joy scenes NOW (with all we know ) gives every precious moment an entirely new meaning . For ex. The sadness on Young Ned’s face., back when 1st seen I thought his sadness was simply due to Lyanna’s death BUT it’s way more complex and awful (in addition to his inability to prevent the terrible death of his precious sister,😢:
1. He realizes with terrible sadness that not only is his beloved sister’s life slipping away but that he facilitated the death of the man his sister truly loved.
2. The beautiful little baby Ned is handed is truly the incarnation of R+L’s love & joy .
3. Ned is so young & he’s lost so many members of his family. has been given the last child of a family that molded the entire world he knew. Even as the heir to another great family, the Starks, this is quite a massive responsibility. (One which Catelyn only makes much worse when Ned finally returns home. You know? She and her total nutyer of a sister REALLY brought tremendous & unnecessary pain and death down upon so many. Even worse they brought death down upon so many whom they professed to love most. Lysa was a murderer, she isn’t simply an accomplice to Jon Arryn’s death. She gladly gave him the Tears of Lys provided by Littlefinger.

Yes but it was the mad King who started the war by killing the the Lord of winterfell and asking for the heads of Ned and Robert.
He was obsessed with prophecy. Everything he did, he did because he read it in a prophecy and believed he was the Prince who was Promised. He was born during the tragedy at Summerhall, amidst the flames. He wasn't even a warrior growing up, until he read that he had to be and went to the weapons master right after and told the guy to train him. He underestimated the rage of Robert by getting with his girl, in that respect, he was foolish. His father also escalated the rage of Ned and Robert by killing Brandon and Rickard Stark. When he had gotten Lyanna pregnant, he now had the third head of the dragon in his children. He was probably still Prophecy driven and thought himself invincible. His backup plan included keeping Lyanna and his third child alive to continue the prophecy should he die in battle. And, he did. Thats why the kingsguard fought anyone to protect them.
