Jaguar XKSS: A Re-creation Made For Recreation
Вставка
- Опубліковано 2 кві 2018
- Join us this week on the backroads (and dirt paths) of Los Angeles as we follow James Chen and his Jaguar XKSS recreation for an evening drive without a destination. Built on the underpinnings of an E-Type, his nimble British roadster wears some genuine D-Type parts as well, and because it isn’t one of the 16 invaluable original examples of the XKSS built in 1957, it can be driven without the fear of a multi-million dollar visit to the ditch if things get out of hand. This one is certainly enjoyed to the fullest, and though we understand it’s not the same as the real deal, it delivers a different kind of pleasure for the simple fact that it can be driven “as intended.”

Isn't this the guy that wakes up at 4am to drive his 250 Lusso on the streets of LA without having to worry about other cars...? I like this guy.
ye he is
This guy took part in the Ultimate Street Car Challenges hosted by sport compact car for those that remember that mag
was my first thought when i heard that voice without seeing him. great taste in cars!
If you like him, check out the Chrysler Lebaron Mark Cross edition video. Beautiful car.
BuffALotSoldier yea, yea, the nipple shirt guy!
That final shot is beyond brilliant. One of your best, Petro - and there are many to choose from.
Much appreciated! Thanks for checking it out!
Agreed, that closer was just perfect. Kudos!
Seeing gorgeous footage of such a killer vintage Jag doing donuts was a perfect pairing to my morning coffee!
Brad Cornelius completely agree
totally agree! I was going to post that but you beat me to it!
That last shot was glorious
looked like he was sending Roadkill a message!
they can have a donut off
Nothing feels greater than an old car with no electronics. Truly raw and analog. Coming from a carburetted RX7 owner
You wouldn't want to drive your authentic $10-$15mil xkss down a dirt road, but driving your million dollar recreation is just fine. Some years ago there was a gathering in California of most of the original xkss's, certainly one of the most stunning events I'd ever witnessed. Love to see James actually driving and enjoying this car as much as he does. Even the recreation cars are legendary. And whoever asked Mr. Chen if this car was fake should be ashamed of themselves. Calling this car "fake" is automotive blasphemy! Great job Petrolicious!
It’s not one of the recreations that Jaguar made, its based on an E-type that some guy built up, is not the 1 million one, and that, at least to me makes it in a way even cooler, he can drive it without worrying to much about the depreciation, that being said, I don’t think this was cheap either
as Hamster said.. it build yesterday
Eric, I'll happily call this car the death of a '64 E-type. This is NOT a good recreation. If you've got an hour or two I'll explain why. If you're gong to call blasphemy, try to know what you're talking about.
British car, jaguar, and green color are perfect blending. Listening this man talking about his jag is inspiring.
It is built to be driven and this guy doing that. This is why this video is so special among other petrolicious videos.
Man, that slowmo dirt donut at the end was so boss.
James was driving that car like a boss all day long. Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks!
The only donut I'll ever witness from a XKSS.
I was thinking that, Yeah I would do that to my paint, but I don't know many others that would.
Mr Chen, thank you for the inspiration. My RAM D Type has been off the road under covers since my daughter was born 16 years ago. Before that, it was my every day car for the 7 years after I built it - sun, rain, snow, and without a garage. I was with Adrian Cocking (RAM is now Realm Engineering, Adrian still runs the company) only last week, buying a short nose bonnet. I cannot wait to get up tomorrow morning to start stripping the car down to rebuild it for the summer now!
I love this owner. Petrolicious has done several of his vehicles. He seems to be the genuine article and not afraid to flog the sh!t out of them as well. Kudos Mr. Chen, you have a wonderful collection!!! Thank you for sharing with us.
James, Thank you for all you give back to the old car hobby...and todays youth. Both are so important. Love that you don't baby this XKSS. Steve is smiling down on you, from heaven.JTOrlando, Fl
These videos always make me feel excited about driving. They make me want to go get in my 07 Subaru WRX and just drive out some where
Same, but I’ve got a less excited Lexus ES330. I still want to go out and drive even though my car is not the most exciting. I just love driving.
Michael Pruett this comment makes me miss my 07 WRX. My ‘15 FXT is a poor substitute.
My 75 CB750f always gets a workout after watching these vids.
Exactly the same! Even in my 03 boxster!!
I actually do the same with my 370z!! There is a street close by me in a mountain that late night is awesome to drive when there are no other cars around.
Nice guy with a fabulous car who is also a great Dad. HUGE thumbs up!!!!
My hero! Neither of my boys will be driving anything that can take ethanol in the tank. This was worth the watch just for the last 30 seconds or so.
Alfa Romeo- No Radio
Porsche GT2 - No Radio
Ferrari- No Radio!
I love the way you think, gorgeous car, thanks for sharing
Car guy most definitely. Top work again petrolicous.😎
His opinions towards the end regarding the future of automotive enthusiasm is very true. Driving will soon become a luxury rather than a daily task, and eventually petrol will become a highly expensive commodity along with it.
Already is.
Thank goodness someone still makes videos and cars exciting.
That car has some serious soul, it has to be an absolute blast to drive
Love this guys attitude! I could listen to that exhaust note all day even more so😎
Very nice story, thanks to James!
An absolutely wonderful story!! Love it!
Using and sharing your passion with others is what it's all about.
One of your best yet Petrolicious, the ethos that this owner lives by sums it up perfectly for me. Awesome car and custodian!
This is a passionate man. You can hear it in every word he says. The car world needs more people like this.
Petrolicious done did it again!.....
Bravo folks!
Yeah, that's gorgeous, well done Mr. Chan.
Everyone's been doing it for years with the Shelby Cobras. No complaints here. Build what you want at the price you can afford. James Chen is a genuine car guy.
What a great video and story--film-like, dreamy, and true all at the same time.
Love this guy! Was just rewatching the 250lusso video, such a powerful story and passion he has for driving and cars! Love it!😊
Absolutely stunning, I’d love to see more of his car collection.
I liked it before watching coz when it comes to petrolicious you always know what's about to come!
The production values present on this channel are OUTSTANDING. Wish y'all continued growth and success!
Thank you very much for that! Nothing better than sharing, and showing, the passion that these drivers/owners have for their autos.
Your beautiful cinematography helps make these stories that much more compelling. This channel has a very bright future. Cheers!
These are some of the best car videos on youtube, this channel is amazing
wow!!! What style James! Beautiful machine! Thank you for sharing your experience of owning an xkss!
Greetings from Argentina.
Ugh, so good. That slow mo donut at the end got me misty eyed.
Excellent story and attitude
Great that you drive them all.
Beautiful!
What a gorgeous car, Mr. Chen is a true enthusiast, thanks for sharing.
Excellent video. I can’t think of any car that I’d rather than this one.
Beautiful Re-creation. Love it!
indeed a masterpiece of video Petrolicious!
#goals, beautiful machine, spirit is there, without the sweat involved. Well done!
Awesome video!! Actually I would like to share it like a million times because it express the real passion for driving!! EXCELLENT VIDEO!!
It's great to see the quintessential leveler of all true enthusiasts - the parking lot skid. Awesome vid and a great character!
Stunning!
Wow! That last scene was gorgeous and cool! Very nice car too.
slow Mo shot from 8 mins onward ......the Most perfect Driver and car in Harmony.
that final shot was magic
Stunning......................
You're a jewel. Wish there were more roundeyes out there thinking like you do.
Wow ! Just the sound of the engine !!!!!
I have a problem. I can't get enough of your videos. I find myself watching video after video. Bravo!
This channel is heaven
Siiiiiiick! Keep it up James. Nice one Petrolicious.
awesome car and the owner. great job Petrolicious and thank you
Adrian Cocking of Realm Engineering builds the RAM XKSS. Adrian enjoys a splendid reputation in the Jaguar Drivers Club as an expert par excellence. Richard Noble, who held the land speed record for many years, owns a RAM XKSS built by Adrian Cocking. Thanks for this excellent video on the RAM XKSS.
That looks like an interesting garage!
Love this car and this man’s message
Great video and story!
Outstanding shooting! And editing!
The last shot is the most beautiful and well done I've ever seen. Congratulations on that.
Also much respect to the owner.
Thank you! James was a trooper about throwing this car around and getting it dirty! :)
Haven't thought about that! Considering Mr. Chen is not a stunt-driver, and the fact that he is driving, not an expendable stunt-car but a freakin' XKSS, makes that shot even more awesome.
In terms of cinematography, I believe I've never seen that particular framing and trajectory, in any movies of car related videos. (please correct me if I'm wrong)
Compliments to Mr Chen, for his bravery and exquisite taste.
Outstanding!
Nice video. Thank you. I remember reading a circuit test of a D Type as part of an Autocar series in the mid to late 1970s, wherein the tester mentioned its twitchy behaviour in corners, due to the solid rear axle. Using an XKE as the basis for an XKSS tribute is an excellent idea for a road car, especially one that will be surrounded by vehicles with disc brakes and ABS.
At 21, a lot of my peers worry me. People my age who want to genuinely devote all of their focus to any single activity at a time are truly hard to find. Anything they do has to be accompanied by Snapchat and text messages or Facebook to keep up to date. They can’t be bothered to fully consume themselves in any one thing.
For me, my passion for driving is one that consumes, that demands full and uninterrupted attention. It takes me to another place, not just physically but mentally. Today’s wired up society never allow themselves to develop true passion or even hobbies to help define who they are. Everything they know is short term multitasking and scrabbling for money or romance or social recognition to “get ahead”.
Our only hope to keep driving alive is the few of us from the PlayStation generation that still dream about Gran Turismo, 90’s rally machines and our father’s long lost muscle cars.
Don't lose that feeling, ever.
No matter how many lifeless troll out there tell you how much faster their automatics are.
Not to worry, my hatred for automatic transmissions and fragile, obtrusive electronics is already seated deep within my soul. 0-60 and HP don’t matter if you’re truly enjoying the experience and connection of driving.
Ryan M the fastest cars I ever drove were actually really slow. There is nothing like the rumble of a triumph spitfire being tossed around a back road, I keep trying to recapture that.....
/r/lewronggeneration
Dude, you are hanging around the wrong 21 year olds if you can't find others who share your passions. It's not a generational thing. Go find your people.
That’s why I phrased it as “peers”. All of my real friends and I share different degrees of excitement for driving but all agree it’s well beyond a means of transportation. But I’m always on the lookout for more of my people. Few and far between out here!
This is great...
Loved the ending!
Greatest video of the day!
man that is a good looking car, recreation or not. And this guy sure puts it threw its paces which is great to see. True car enthusiast for sure.
By far one of the best Videos yet Petrolicious. Made my Day :')
You made me smile throughout the video, then cheer at the end!
What a lovely story, and a true passionate soul!
I'm taking a break from working on my project car to watch this, cand someday hope to do a PL video that may be half as good as this one. Thank you, and best wishes with your cars and family.
Fabuleuse voiture, la grande et belle époque Jaguar. Par chance, elle roule et n’est pas dans un musée 👍🏻
Slo-Mo Do-nut seals the deal. ^5. Great job guys and gals.
This is one of your best videos yet. Cool car, cool guy and a great ending. Thanks!
A 250 Lusso, an XK-SS, and a Carrera GT... James Chen is living the dream.
He probably sold the lusso
Brilliant video
🍩 s in the dirt. Awesome!
Just beautiful
I love your car collection, and you're well spoken. You're becoming a regular on this channel :)
Hello Sergej, You are right about wanting to see more of his fantastic classics and maybe you can convince Vladimir P. to go with you on a trip to see and enjoy such classics so he can change maybe his perception to what's really worth fighting for in life, an idelology or mankinds technical and beautiful creatiions.
And by the way the same applies for our allies and the leaders of our 'so fantastic' demicracies.
May God bless you and your felliow countrymen and all of mankind
Very nicely shot vid! Awesome car too! Just pure art!
Much appreciated! Thanks for checking it out!
What a great video!
Very cool. Great experience. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Wow the ending of this video is oscar worthy. Fantastic cinematography.
Not sure about Oscar worthy, but I appreciate the compliment very much! Thanks for checking it out!
Looks like he is having a blast. Who cares if its a replica, did you see the craftsmanship of this great car?? Salute.
Damn! Amazing video! One day I will have my 240z and drive it just like this one!
Ir's a chopped and channeled E Type - brilliant !
that was wanderful!
"Lucas, the prince of darkness." Never a truer word spoken!
thats beautiful !!
Gooooorgeus last shot! :D
Best one yet Cabin Boy!!!
Sweet car I wish more companies would make recreations of old cars. There's no excuse to not buy a classic car I got my MGB GT for like £3000 which is a lot cheaper then most second hand cars.
Beautiful, and you really drive the nuts off it, amen. Yes I would definitely take this over any modern car.
This is the guy with the Berlinetta Lusso (Petrolicious episode: : Lusso Morning Ritual).
It looks like he really knows how to handle that beast. Great parting shot!
Man, this guy is living!
I will say one thing though: Convertibles need roll bars.
There’s no other answer. They have to be installed.
I used to know an EMT who encountered some real living nightmares of guys who
rolled their ragtops. He described the aftermath as looking like scrambled eggs.
Yes, it happens.
Well done video... as usual.
Live the dream and enjoy your life with the beautiful car you worked to get yourself and the best off health to enjoy it great to watch 😁🎉
Looks Beautiful and sounds awesome, you have great taste in automobiles.
all a man really needs is that one car and a clear weekend day...
You are a really, really great dad.
Spetacular!
