Just like Mercedes, who tried in the Eighties with a modern engined Gullwing by AMG. But even the great Carroll Shelby did it himself, with various manufacturers, and also Ford did it in the Eighties with Brian Angliss who had bought the right to the AC name and started producing recreation Cobra's. Ford tried to sue him, but they never copyrighted the name Cobra, and still don't own it today or GT40 either. That's why the representation of a modern GT40 was called the Ford GT, and the same for the latest money spinner for them with V6, and the very tight cockpit.
I remember, as a school boy, accompanying my dad to Jaguar Cleveland for XK120M parts and seeing an XKSS on display...what a beautiful "brute" it was that I would dream about. Thanks for this and the McQueen drive videos, Jay!

Why would they go to all the trouble then only produce nine cars? I wonder if they're only able to skirt safety and emissions rules to register these new cars because they are able to use the chassis numbers of the original nine?

as usual, Jay cannot contain his enthusiasm for a car. That's one of the many reasons we love him out in the automotive universe. it would be easy to get jaded and prefer the new stuff over the classics, but many of us enjoy the nostalgia of driving a machine that is behind the times technologically, but light years ahead in fun. Well done Jay AND Jag.

The Jaguar was my favorite as boy. Nothing has changed. Even virtually, the way Leno presents this, I get emotional. You feel the magnificence of this car. I recently saw, and spoke with the original owners, a couple who had their first date in the same fully restored 56' Gullwing, silver in color, on perhaps their final tour in the car as they passed through NW Montana. Wonderful people, wonderful car, stunningly beautiful combination. The XKSS is probably the more beautiful and exciting vehicle. But the Gullwing experience might be like meeting Steve McQueen and his car, 60 years latter. Surprised that Leno does not have one by now? I'd sell half my fleet and live in that car.
Crossley / Goodyear's disk brake episode lasted six months as they were not practical. Non practical disk brakes on road cars were first tried in the 1900s by Lanchester! Jag / Dunlop were the first to succeed in racing and Austin Healey with Dunlop disk brakes on all four corners on a series production vehicle. Very much Jay Leno to roll out his amazing 'knowledge'

Jay was right. Disc brakes were not invented by Jag, they were the first to perfect them for cars. A little mistake there, or probably just a slip as the guy was highly knowledgeable. As was mentioned the Austin Healey was the first to have them on a production car. I think Citroen were the first to have them on a non-sporty car.
I went to the peterson museum today went on the vault tour and was able to see McQueens jag. thanks for putting all of these machines in motion for us Jay!

It's true. A lot of it has to do with crash safety standards. It's simply not possible to incorporate today's requirements for a production vehicle in the shape of cars from yesteryear.
I remember reading about the XKSS as a schoolboy, some 50 years ago, and being amazed to learn about this car from the fifties which made an E-Type look slow! Amazing that Jaguar has now made a few more. But they really should have had a big production run and brought the price way down so that I could afford one ! :-) I'd be happy to swap my 2009 MX5 for one.... ......
Must say as a journeyman electrician/antique engine restorer the new high perf LED lighting system in this garage is doing its job.. No more hum, heat and saves energy. Good upgrade there Jay. I admit I love my HID lamps but I'm warming to the new tech.. The Jag, oh are they so special. Old tooling, old builders, bringing a tragedy into a birth. Kudos Jay and Jaguar.
Both Jay and Tim are accurate. The Crosley Hot Shot was first car with a disc type brake system but it didn't work well at all and prone to lock up. Jaguar was the first to make the modern and reliable caliper-type disc brakes, which first appeared in 1953 on the Jaguar C-Type racing car.
Although a small (under 100) batch of Austin Healey 100S with disc brakes were made with discs which pre-dated it, in terms of series production cars (circa 1.5 million built) the first type to be fitted with reliable, highly effective disc brakes was the Citroën DS available from October 1955. Kudos for Jaguar's use of disc braking in their race vehicles but they were *not*, as was claimed, first to use them in a production street car.

After the loss of '52 Le Mans against Mercedes when several of the aerodinamical low nose C_Type Model fell out because of overheated drum brakes! Jaguar had to think something new and they did.

The (heavily modified) XK120 was driven by Norman Dewis in Jabbeke, Belgium, close to or even a bit over 170 miles per hour. In the late 90's they went at it again, this time with a XK180 and I recall Norman was there as well. Nice to have had the opportunity to briefly chat with this great driver.
Impressed with the reps knowledge and passion. I’m used to having to explain a companies history or models to the salesman trying to sell me one of their cars.
Man n man, Jay You made me remember my worst nightmare as a mechanic kid.... Had a customers...his wife had a porche and he had an xke.... They came to my bosses shop for everythmg.......my worst day was when I had to change the water pump on the xke.....I was 19 then... My flippin back still hurts now. And I'm 66....I just can't undertamd how the men who did that work all day all week survived.......:) :) :)
Maybe for the "car guys" who watch the show your producers could add an element where the cars are on the lift for a portion of the discussion; the Jag would have been a good specimen to poke around under...

I had several Jags back in the 90's and they were the best things I have ever bought myself. i had a nice silver XJ6 and I saw a 5 speed manual which was very rare so I bought it too and my girlfriend and business partner was ok about it but when I came home with a third I did get a bit of hassle, but it was well worth it. She really had a face on when myself and a friend rented a building that would have held about 50 cars and we proceeded to fill it over half full, but that was worth the dark looks too.
To put it in an English word, Brilliant! One of the most beautiful automobiles ever made.. Some of the sleekest and sexiest lines of any care and of course that jewel of an engine, that sound. Pure music to any car 'persons' ear... The color combo is just PERFECT and so British.. For some reason, whenever I see that car, I am immediately reminded of the old Spitfire airplane.. I think it's the rear wheel well/cut-out that does that for some reason.. Its just SO British.. I can just SEE Steve McQueen tooling around in that.. The King of Cool, driving one of the coolest cars EVER built.. They were in fact made for each other...
the most baller thing ive ever seen. this multi millionaire drove up to the Rolex vintage car festival in his original xkss for the day to then drive his original d type on the track. at the time i think the estimated value for the 2 cars was 4 million. i dont know now.
Just another example of how cool Steve McQueen was to have the vision so few others did at the time. There aren't many new cars I would choose over this one. Perhaps none. Simply incredible.

On the disc brake issue, Hanning had it coming (Jaguar DID NOT develop them!) - Jay was 100% correct about the history behind disc brakes and how they got into automobiles.
I feel actually pain that I'll never own or drive one of these, it hurts. XKSS and the Miura, the two most beautiful cars ever made. * Of course the Alfa Romeo Type 33 Stradale would be the perfect trifecta.

Womb Raider Me too, I have had cars in the past, even cool ones, but when I had a different job and no wife and child. I had to choose between car or family. I had a 1991 Celica 4x4 rallye car Japanese import for a while, and a crazy modded 1998 US spec VW beetle in Europe. Miss them, believe it or not I miss the beetle more, it looked like a HotWheels toy car, super low, fancy 18" giant wheels, and tons of mods all over, xenon, led lights, custom paint, Golf engine, custom exhausts all the way.
Find your favorite car buy sheets of aluminum an English wheel and a shop hammer and a Shop bag and start beating away and make your favorite car buy whatever brand new engine you want make her own chassis learn how to weld so you can make your dream car you can make it look better than a real one. Do what I'm doing, buying the best model of the cars I can't afford. I've got a dark purple one by autoart, and it's amazingly detailed. Trying for a D-type, but struggling plus the 'unicorn' racecar the XJ13. I think the most beautiful car designed by Malcolm Sayer, and which unfortunately has been restored badly in the mid 70's after one of the rear wheels collapsed whilst being shown off to Prince Phillip. The late Norman Dewis, was a rear gunner in Wellington and Lancaster bombers in WW2. He had a high chance of not returning from a sortie as the rear gunner was always the first to be killed if attacked by an enemy plane. He did shoot a few planes down, and was one of the rare lucky ones to survive. But unfortunately he died last year, which was a bad year for losing the best of the best. To all that we last, pedal to the metal forever.
What an awesome car. Utterly gorgeous... even glorious. Sit in it and it encapsulates you... at one with the car. Start the engine, and it thunders. Simply amazing.
i had the fortune of seeing an original one once (video on my channel) and this one is 100% identical.. its amazing that jaguar built 9 new ones.. its like they took cars from 1957, froze them in time and got them out this year.
When I was about 13 or 14 my father wanted buy an XKE with a blown motor. It had the 4.2L engine but my Dad had a line on 3.8L out of a sedan. The owner wanted $2000 and Dad offered him $850. They couldn''t come to an agreement. Years later when I had a gotten out of school and got a good job I went back and the Jag was still in the same place with a Scottish thistle growing through the roof. No I didn't even ask how much he wanted for it.
Stirling Moss was in Lakeland FL for the Mirror Lake Show as honorary. My friend mentioned he had his Bugeye displayed. His first car, bought before going to Viet Nam. Stirling said he had had one and loved it. Then asked to see it. After sitting in it, Stirling took a marker and signed his dash. 👍 Great guy.
Oh man, what I would give for this! The D and E’s were my favorites in High School next to the Countach, and Project 7 is my fave right now. Until seeing this!!
You can't call this car a reproduction. It was made by the original company using essentially the same components as the original run. It's pretty much a continuation of the line... just following a nearly 60 year pause. Regardless, though, it's a real beauty. I especially like the tan/brown interior they chose for this one... I think it's much nicer than the black on the Steve McQueen car we saw Jay driving in this video.
Me too. The car is supposed to be green, bnut it sure looked gray under those lights. I suppose the only way to find out how it looks in daylight is to buy one.
I love Jags. I had quite a few when I was wealthier than i am now. They are undoubtedly, pound for pound (or dollars) the best cars in the world. I loved the XJ6 series 3, I had 5 of them. T he best cars I ever owned by far. I regularly did a 212 mile drive and if it took over 2 hours it was due to traffic and I would be annoyed. I once did the run in an hour and 46 mins which was a lot of fun. You could never do that now with all the damn cameras. If you really want a treat and can afford the fuel, get yourself a Jag. They supposedly did 16 to 18 to a gallon but I never got double figures. 6 to 8 was what mine did but that may have been the way I used to drive.
@Desmond Bagley.That is certainly not a "fact" however long it has supposedly been established. It is merely an opinion. Also it is simply my opinion that a Jaguar is a real experience worth having if you are in any way a "rev head". If you want eonomical motoring then you are not going to choose a Jaguar but if mpg matters to you then you are very unlikely to "love" your car in the way that I loved my Jags and my motor cycles. Undoubtedly a Honda or toyota may be a wiser choice economicaly but you will never get out of one with a huge grin and the feeling of utter joy which only a serious motor car can bring. Even a Honda NSX which does have impressive performance is very clinical and is just not an "experience" Jags had a reputation for being unreliable but that was simply people not understanding what they were driving. A Jaguar is an enthusiasts car and needs an hour or two on the weekend. They are supposed to burn oil. That is not a fault. If you drive several hundrd miles then you need to put a pint of oil in to get home or it will overheat. You need to remember that the six cylinder engine used in most old Jags was designed just after the war but was smooth enough to balance a coin on it while running and was still in use in 1986. To compare a Jaguar and a Honda really is apples and pears. They are not the same in any way other than they both have round wheels.

Jonny B Glad that you caught that. The classic XK engine that powered all Jaguars from 1948 through the 50s, 60s, and 70s had many virtues, but it was a long stroke (4 inch?) engine. Its rev limit was defined by the ability of its pistons to travel that long stroke without the heat of friction welding the pistons to the cylinder walls.
They can't due to modern specs. That body would be illegal to sell without meeting crash standards and the lights and bumpers are not placed correctly and don't meet standards. As of 2013, you can't even sell a car without stability control and abs brakes. As such, the 9 XKSS' they are making are not street legal. The people shelling out $1.25 million can only drive around on their country estates.
There are astonishing modern cars but you don't have enough money to buy them, just like you wouldn't have enough money to buy this car when it was brand new.
I believe you refer to the Brussels to Ostend highway at Jabbeke in Belgium Flanders where several speed records achieved at the time. Was also the road to our holidays on Belgian coast, unbeknownst to us it was theater of such glorious moments. That was at the back of my father’s NSU 1200 TT. Whish you can find one to test on your show. Would bring tears to my eyes for sure.
Technology has ruined it for classic collectors. More specifically, digital technology. 50 years from now, all these touch screen panels will be obsolete. The OS will be out for generations. Meanwhile the analog classics now will still be viable and collectible.
replacement/reproduction components will ALWAYS exist. where there is a dollar to be made, the aftermarket will step up and fill that void. we tend to be drawn to the cars of our childhood - cars from the '70s & '80s are only climbing in value and becoming collectibles now, and the '90s to present day has only seen BETTER cars be made - so there will always be desirable cars, there will always be collector cars.
Reverend Eslam Or the Zonda. Or the Carrera GT. Or the 911 R. Actually, there are lots of examples of extremely good and/or interesting moderna cars; fact is, they are very far and between, but there are more than some good ones and future classics.
5.2 is the lowest, real, 0-60 time with this car. I want to see the proof of this car getting close to 4.2. And good for Jay calling out the "suit in a polo" for the Jaguar invented disk breaks comment.

SIMKINETICS I knew you were joking, his accent is actually a little odd, he has a slight English twang to his African accent too, to muddy the waters. Apart from anything else, the accents of the British isles are puzzlingly diverse, I'm South Coast and my voice is vastly different to someone from Yorkshire, let alone other UK accents from Scotland, Wales and Ireland, none of which are more than 500 miles away You can tell South Africans, they always sound a bit angry, and Aussies always sound like they are asking a question (closing upper intonation, some bits of California do it too)

No disc brakes on the bug eh? ;-) My much newer truck is a 1970 Toyota FJ40, drum binders all around. It actually stops pretty well though.
After the loss of '52 Le Mans against Mercedes when several of the aerodinamical low nose C_Type Model fell out because of overheated drum brakes! Jaguar had to think something new and they did.
***** Oh no! It's drum brakes and a top speed of about 60ish... It's a 34-37hp engine. I'm so torn on keeping the car.

The (heavily modified) XK120 was driven by Norman Dewis in Jabbeke, Belgium, close to or even a bit over 170 miles per hour. In the late 90's they went at it again, this time with a XK180 and I recall Norman was there as well. Nice to have had the opportunity to briefly chat with this great driver.

They came to my bosses shop for everythmg.......my worst day was when I had to change the water pump on the xke.....I was 19 then...
My flippin back still hurts now. And I'm 66....I just can't undertamd how the men who did that work all day all week survived.......:) :) :)
Maybe for the "car guys" who watch the show your producers could add an element where the cars are on the lift for a portion of the discussion; the Jag would have been a good specimen to poke around under...

I had several Jags back in the 90's and they were the best things I have ever bought myself. i had a nice silver XJ6 and I saw a 5 speed manual which was very rare so I bought it too and my girlfriend and business partner was ok about it but when I came home with a third I did get a bit of hassle, but it was well worth it. She really had a face on when myself and a friend rented a building that would have held about 50 cars and we proceeded to fill it over half full, but that was worth the dark looks too.

To put it in an English word, Brilliant! One of the most beautiful automobiles ever made.. Some of the sleekest and sexiest lines of any care and of course that jewel of an engine, that sound. Pure music to any car 'persons' ear... The color combo is just PERFECT and so British.. For some reason, whenever I see that car, I am immediately reminded of the old Spitfire airplane.. I think it's the rear wheel well/cut-out that does that for some reason.. Its just SO British.. I can just SEE Steve McQueen tooling around in that.. The King of Cool, driving one of the coolest cars EVER built.. They were in fact made for each other...
the most baller thing ive ever seen. this multi millionaire drove up to the Rolex vintage car festival in his original xkss for the day to then drive his original d type on the track. at the time i think the estimated value for the 2 cars was 4 million. i dont know now.

Stunning car - I stood next to the Steve McQueen Jaguar XKSS at a motor show in Portland Oregon in 2011 and would have loved to drive it.
In 1956 4.2 second 0-60 was literally unbelievably fast. Awesome car.
Just another example of how cool Steve McQueen was to have the vision so few others did at the time. There aren't many new cars I would choose over this one. Perhaps none. Simply incredible.

i saw 1 of the originals on the road on the A660 thru leeds back in 1974/5. didn't realise at the time how rare that sighting was.
Excellent episode. Jay could make it even better if he didn't give in to the urge to talk over the guest before he has finished what he was trying to say. Full credit to Tim, he was very professional and got the information across in a an accessible way.
On the disc brake issue, Hanning had it coming (Jaguar DID NOT develop them!) - Jay was 100% correct about the history behind disc brakes and how they got into automobiles.
Sometimes I agree with you but with ones like this I think it is good that he doesn't always just let the sales blurb run and run.

Womb Raider Me too, I have had cars in the past, even cool ones, but when I had a different job and no wife and child. I had to choose between car or family. I had a 1991 Celica 4x4 rallye car Japanese import for a while, and a crazy modded 1998 US spec VW beetle in Europe. Miss them, believe it or not I miss the beetle more, it looked like a HotWheels toy car, super low, fancy 18" giant wheels, and tons of mods all over, xenon, led lights, custom paint, Golf engine, custom exhausts all the way.
Find your favorite car buy sheets of aluminum an English wheel and a shop hammer and a Shop bag and start beating away and make your favorite car buy whatever brand new engine you want make her own chassis learn how to weld so you can make your dream car you can make it look better than a real one. Do what I'm doing, buying the best model of the cars I can't afford. I've got a dark purple one by autoart, and it's amazingly detailed. Trying for a D-type, but struggling plus the 'unicorn' racecar the XJ13. I think the most beautiful car designed by Malcolm Sayer, and which unfortunately has been restored badly in the mid 70's after one of the rear wheels collapsed whilst being shown off to Prince Phillip. The late Norman Dewis, was a rear gunner in Wellington and Lancaster bombers in WW2. He had a high chance of not returning from a sortie as the rear gunner was always the first to be killed if attacked by an enemy plane. He did shoot a few planes down, and was one of the rare lucky ones to survive. But unfortunately he died last year, which was a bad year for losing the best of the best. To all that we last, pedal to the metal forever.

i had the fortune of seeing an original one once (video on my channel) and this one is 100% identical.. its amazing that jaguar built 9 new ones.. its like they took cars from 1957, froze them in time and got them out this year.

When I was about 13 or 14 my father wanted buy an XKE with a blown motor. It had the 4.2L engine but my Dad had a line on 3.8L out of a sedan. The owner wanted $2000 and Dad offered him $850. They couldn''t come to an agreement.
Years later when I had a gotten out of school and got a good job I went back and the Jag was still in the same place with a Scottish thistle growing through the roof. No I didn't even ask how much he wanted for it.
Stirling Moss was in Lakeland FL for the Mirror Lake Show as honorary. My friend mentioned he had his Bugeye displayed. His first car, bought before going to Viet Nam. Stirling said he had had one and loved it. Then asked to see it. After sitting in it, Stirling took a marker and signed his dash. 👍 Great guy.

You can't call this car a reproduction. It was made by the original company using essentially the same components as the original run. It's pretty much a continuation of the line... just following a nearly 60 year pause. Regardless, though, it's a real beauty. I especially like the tan/brown interior they chose for this one... I think it's much nicer than the black on the Steve McQueen car we saw Jay driving in this video.

I love Jags. I had quite a few when I was wealthier than i am now. They are undoubtedly, pound for pound (or dollars) the best cars in the world. I loved the XJ6 series 3, I had 5 of them. T he best cars I ever owned by far. I regularly did a 212 mile drive and if it took over 2 hours it was due to traffic and I would be annoyed. I once did the run in an hour and 46 mins which was a lot of fun. You could never do that now with all the damn cameras. If you really want a treat and can afford the fuel, get yourself a Jag. They supposedly did 16 to 18 to a gallon but I never got double figures. 6 to 8 was what mine did but that may have been the way I used to drive.
@Desmond Bagley.That is certainly not a "fact" however long it has supposedly been established. It is merely an opinion. Also it is simply my opinion that a Jaguar is a real experience worth having if you are in any way a "rev head". If you want eonomical motoring then you are not going to choose a Jaguar but if mpg matters to you then you are very unlikely to "love" your car in the way that I loved my Jags and my motor cycles. Undoubtedly a Honda or toyota may be a wiser choice economicaly but you will never get out of one with a huge grin and the feeling of utter joy which only a serious motor car can bring. Even a Honda NSX which does have impressive performance is very clinical and is just not an "experience" Jags had a reputation for being unreliable but that was simply people not understanding what they were driving. A Jaguar is an enthusiasts car and needs an hour or two on the weekend. They are supposed to burn oil. That is not a fault. If you drive several hundrd miles then you need to put a pint of oil in to get home or it will overheat. You need to remember that the six cylinder engine used in most old Jags was designed just after the war but was smooth enough to balance a coin on it while running and was still in use in 1986. To compare a Jaguar and a Honda really is apples and pears. They are not the same in any way other than they both have round wheels.

Hehe, technically Lanchester Motor company invented them in 1902, but they were bought by Daimler and later Jaguar, so I guess Jag owns the rights. But by that logic Tata invented the disk brakes as they own Jag, Daimler and Lanchester now lol

Glad that you caught that. The classic XK engine that powered all Jaguars from 1948 through the 50s, 60s, and 70s had many virtues, but it was a long stroke (4 inch?) engine. Its rev limit was defined by the ability of its pistons to travel that long stroke without the heat of friction welding the pistons to the cylinder walls.

They can't due to modern specs. That body would be illegal to sell without meeting crash standards and the lights and bumpers are not placed correctly and don't meet standards. As of 2013, you can't even sell a car without stability control and abs brakes. As such, the 9 XKSS' they are making are not street legal. The people shelling out $1.25 million can only drive around on their country estates.

I believe you refer to the Brussels to Ostend highway at Jabbeke in Belgium Flanders where several speed records achieved at the time. Was also the road to our holidays on Belgian coast, unbeknownst to us it was theater of such glorious moments. That was at the back of my father’s NSU 1200 TT. Whish you can find one to test on your show. Would bring tears to my eyes for sure.
Technology has ruined it for classic collectors. More specifically, digital technology. 50 years from now, all these touch screen panels will be obsolete. The OS will be out for generations. Meanwhile the analog classics now will still be viable and collectible.

replacement/reproduction components will ALWAYS exist. where there is a dollar to be made, the aftermarket will step up and fill that void.
we tend to be drawn to the cars of our childhood - cars from the '70s & '80s are only climbing in value and becoming collectibles now, and the '90s to present day has only seen BETTER cars be made - so there will always be desirable cars, there will always be collector cars.

Actually, there are lots of examples of extremely good and/or interesting moderna cars; fact is, they are very far and between, but there are more than some good ones and future classics.

SIMKINETICS I knew you were joking, his accent is actually a little odd, he has a slight English twang to his African accent too, to muddy the waters.
Apart from anything else, the accents of the British isles are puzzlingly diverse, I'm South Coast and my voice is vastly different to someone from Yorkshire, let alone other UK accents from Scotland, Wales and Ireland, none of which are more than 500 miles away
You can tell South Africans, they always sound a bit angry, and Aussies always sound like they are asking a question (closing upper intonation, some bits of California do it too)
