    The major drawback of Jay Leno's Garage is that every time I tune in up.. I go binge watching, I cannot stop..if is not the Porsche, or the Corvettes, or a Shelby, is a top rebuilt project or Mc Queen's Jaguar, and much more ...and then after seeing his face full of satisfaction driving down the road, like a kid with a new toy...certainly It is an entertaining and informative show...Happy motoring, Jay!

    At this point in his life Jay has seen it all and driven it all, so it take a LOT to get him to even crack a smile while driving. You could tell he was loving every second driving this Jag, and that is the true gold standard.

    First time I see Jay actually happy in a car, he can't help himself. His smile is genuine. Making a guy who owns so many great cars that happy is a real compliment to the Jag. ;)

      The smile Jay has right at the start of the drive is priceless.
      Actually the green reminds me of a time in the 70's, As a child I was into Playboy magazine (I didn't care for the ladies at the time) looking at the stereo equipment and especially the Jaguars of the time. I also remember trying to show my grandma the Jaguar that was hot in the mid 70's but wouldn't you know it the darn centerfold fell out and ruined the whole presentation. Good times Thank you Jay for sharing this auto

    Jay, I saw this car at the Peterson's Museum and remember it well. The same week you invited me to your garage. It was not only my honeymoon but a dream of mine to meet you and tour the garage. Like you say in the video...How do you top this? You couldn't punch the smile off you and Bernards face. Priceless. Now you know how us regular poor car guys feel going to your garage. Dream and opportunity of a lifetime. I was having brain surgery in 2 months and thank you for making my bucket list! Thank you for the tour, meeting you and your videos. us car guys live vicariously through your garage.

    So much fun seeing our buddy Jay actually STAR-STRUCK and AWE-STRUCK! He's speechless, gushing like a fan and grinning like a kid the first time he sits on Santa's lap. I had the privilege to sit in this car in the 80s before it was restored. I was invited to test drive it for my magazine "British Car," and it was being prepped for auction (the then-owner boasted it might hit the stratospheric price of $100,000), but he rescinded his offer for me to drive it on Mulholland where we met, so I only photographed it for the publication. Wish I'd gotten that opportunity to drive it!

    So many car-guy shows, the host just looks "meh" no matter what they're driving. It's awesome seeing how much joy Jay is getting from driving this, it not only shows his passion for "fine automobiles" but also why he's the perfect guy to be doing what he's doing! I know a rich guy who has a couple B-J type musclecars, $$$$$$$ but you can tell he only has them because they impress others, he could just as easily collect boats or sculptures or something... Jay is so cool because not only does he have an awesome car collection, but he shows them off to the world on Utube!

    The engine is also aluminium block and head, rather than iron block in the standard road cars.
    Modern D type replicas, if built right and if the power is bumped up a bit, can nudge 2ton in a straight line, and can be built with later Jaguar independent rear suspension. Those kind of replicas are very, very good!
    A 5 speed gearbox also cuts the ridiculously long 1st gear in half and lets you pull away much quicker, and decreases the already ridiculously low 0-60 time. 3 seconds is possible. For a 1950s designed car...

      He is talking about the famed lightweight E Type, built primarily for racing, but sold to the public. Jaguar had a fire at Browns Lane and production was halted, but now they are building the last 12 that never got built, all hand made and selling for upwards of one million pounds, and as far as I know, they ( Jaguar Heritage) have taken deposits on all 12.

    Only episode where Jay Leno is speechless. Actually sits back and drives in silence to savor and relish in all that is the XK-SS experience.
    Damn, I am the most jealous I have ever felt watching one of Jay's episodes.
    I figure it's 99% the car, not the previous owner's association to it, that Jay truely enjoyed. The whole car, the story of why it was built, how it was built, the fire that cut production short and almost destroyed Jaguar, the now continuation by Jaguar to finish the last 9 cars that were destroyed in the fire using all original tools and dies with correct VIN numbers IS an unbelievable car story that every true car lover should know.
    What a moving piece of artwork. Like Leno said in episode... The XK-SS is both feminine and masculine in it's appearance. Such a very strong visual presence before even starting the motor and hearing the side pipes bark and rumble to life with the sound of a nice aggressive cam shafts and quick revving motor.
    Man I am JEALOUS!! While appreciating the episode at the same time.
    Thanks Jay.

    I visited the Peterson recently and spent a very long time drooling over this car. It's such a fascinating piece of automotive history. A really strange crossover between the D type and the E type.The brake system is strangely similar to the booster system used on Diesel trucks today.You can immediately see it's racing history when you fired it up - noticed immediately that that is a Smiths Chronometric mechanical revcounter.Really cool.I think if I ever got the chance to drive this car I would be as overexcited as you were Jay !Peter

    What memories, as a young man in the 50's, I had the joy of watching real road racing at Torrey Pines in La Jolla and couldn't wait until I could have a car like those. Finally, in early 1957 I was able to purchase a 1956, MGA from the dealer in La Jolla who happened to be at the end of the street that I lived on.
    Since then, I have had the privilege of owning another 1956 MGA, a 1962 MGA, and a 1934 SS I which was the precursor to the Jaguar. Now, as I am well into my 80's, I have divested myself of all the toys, but I must tell you, Jay, that period was the epitome of my existence on this planet.

    When I lived in Hastings ,Minnesota a couple years (1985-"86) a guy down the street had a 1960 XKE Jaguar. It was fire engine red and a manual 4 speed (no syncro mesh then).He let me drive it down the street and back. They have a distinct muffler sound ...and get up and go. I believe it had an aluminum body too ( no rust) and was a very light vehicle. The interior on it was bare bones with hard seats and a very short stick shift from the factory. I could have bought it for 1,000 dollars in 1986 but didn't have the dough, of course.

    Keep the talent, the fame, the fortune, The Tonight Show, the acting career, and all the other cars. This is the only time I ever really wanted to be Jay Leno. Getting to drive STEVE McQUEEN'S XKSS!! The "cool" seems to be a mystical aura surrrounding the car and, temporarly anyway, attaches itself to everyone that comes near it. For everyone but Steve McQueen, "cool" leaves just as quickly as the car does, but for that moment in time, any man with any testosterone at all wants to be you. It's way more than just a car.

    "I love that era." Mentions the day when you could drive to the track, change the tires and the gearing, run the race, and then drive it home again. So cool. Most of it - aluminum . The engine in those days was similar to the one that was in the street car. Dry sump. A combo body semi-tubular frame and a monocoque chassis. Part of the lightweight feature. Sophisticated braking system. Not a wide-angled head. That was only a racing version. The tilting of 7 degrees to the left was so the engine would fit better under the hood. This car has a solid axle rather than an independent suspension like the XKE. These features including the chromed knock off rims, the glove box cover and all the details make this one of the most iconic cars ever. The noise is one of a kind. This truly looks like a Jaguar. Good point, Jay, regarding the revving of 3.4 and 3.8 as compared with the later 4.2 liter motors. That the McQueen car has been maintained well at the Petersen automotive museum is yet another aspect of this particular car that makes it very cool. This is really a fun, Leno's garage. AF

    I recently saw an XKSS in the flesh for the first time. Wow, what a neat car! After years of seeing them only in photos, I mistakenly thought they were rather large and bulbous like an E-Type, boy was I wrong! They are taut, diminutive and as sinewy as an Olympic gymnast.

    One of the first Americans to own a Jag XKSS was the actor Jimmy Stewart. I think the year was 1957, I'm not sure. New, the car sold for I believe $8800. Their top speed along the 3.5 mile Mulsanne straight on the Le Mans track was 170MPH. Having owned an early E type, I can only wonder how great it would have been to drive this car. Speculation; Why hadn't Jaguar put this model into production rather than the under performing 140 and 150 models. Driving the 120 model at 90 miles per hour was death defying

      Jag only built the XKSS in the first place to use up some old build D ypes. The XK 120 to 150 were being cranked out on a production line and selling fine, and certainly being a stamped out steel shell, much cheaper to build than the XKSS.
      If it hadn't been for the fire, they would I'm sure have built a lot more than the planned 25.
      Nasty clutch slip!

    • @davidkellogg9176
      @davidkellogg9176 4 роки тому

      Hello Robert, You ask why Jaguar didn't build the XKSS. betacam235 covered part of it, but one needs to keep in mind that in 1957 Jaguar was 1) still a small car company 2) they, like the rest of
      the UK, were still recovering from WWII, and 3) they were just beginning to earn their bread and butter from cars like the Mk I; they were still feeling and figuring out the export market. To illustrate, Sir William Lyons, gifted as a designer and a man who brought affordable performance cars to production for incomprehensible prices, almost chose Not to build the E Type / XKE. That car brought Jaguar to the forefront of motoring, along with the D Type's competition successes at Le Mans, and insured the survival of Jaguar Motor Cars. They expected to produce a thousand E Types or so, and production slightly exceeded 72,000 units and spanned 14 years! My point is that Jaguar's marketing judgement was based upon a smaller margin of financial success --at a risk of a very considerably greater portion of the company's worth than, say General Motors deciding whether or not to build the Metro ( Not comparable to the XKSS, but worthy as a comparison because they were both niche cars ).

    • @robertthomas2001
      @robertthomas2001 4 роки тому

      the XKSS would still be ,speed wise, a competitive car in today's market. for a small company, jaguar spread itself to thin by venturing out in the competitive saloon car market which proved to be very costly. had they remained specialized in a narrow market of very fast sports cars, Jaguar would have remained the marque to beat for many years. plus their operation cost would have shrunk dramatically, allowing for more capital investment for development into a singular product.

    What a fantastic experience Jay. I felt as though I was in the Jag with you. I had the privilege to drive two nice XKE Jags back in the day when they were new. One was a 1966 Series 1, 4.2 litre coupe that was race prepared in Spain and it was fast, fast, fast. I wonder if that Jaguar XK-SS could have out run me?! What fun I had back in the late 60s driving that car. Nothing could beat me, not even a hemi cuda! I easily blew their doors off!!!! I could easily do 135 mph in third gear. The car would top out over 160 mph.
