I have been extremely pleased with my PS4. The streaming abilities have helped me do more live events with fans, the games have been pretty solid and have been fun to review, and the ability to remote play everything on my PS Vita rocks for when I want to catch up on documentaries while playing some goofy, mindless games!
AdamKoralik It does work really well but try sitting close to your wireless modem at first until you learn the range. Mine works pretty well in the full house with a signal booster set up. Not super useful but I like having it for grinding levels in Pier Solar HD on PS4 and such.
I find it funny how you said at about 30:28 "if your a PC gamer than i don't even know why your watching this" because i am a PC gamer and yet i love hearing about how the consoles this time around are doing (and i generally like your videos anyways), but i guess you could say i'm one of those PC gamers who is not all "PC GAMING MASTER RACE, as i understand why you don't do PC gaming and why some might not like it (though i really do not get all the flame wars that go on between PC and console fanboys, why can't we all just enjoy gaming regardless of platform?) ,either way nice video as always.
***** Let's use a recent example here. Now that Silent Hills is cancelled, PT has been removed from PSN. Granted, that's a demo basically. But imagine if that a full game people had paid for, simply taken away. Those of us with it on our harddrive can still use it, for the time being. But machines die, harddrives fail, data gets corrupted. Simple firmware updates can take away our ability to even access it. With the game permanently offline, and with no way to reacquire it, it's now on borrowed time. In essence, a rental. You don't own it, you never did. If you did, they wouldn't have the ability to take it from you, short of breaking in and stealing it. If you want to argue that digital content is property, you must also argue that taking games offline like that is theft. If we constitute it as theft, then it's illegal. Which becomes a whole new issue. However, those PS1 demo discs I got from Pizza Hut nearly 20 years ago, yeah, they still work just fine and belong to me. Regardless if the games on them were never finished or whatever. As for the final point, yeah....this generation is disappointing in that regard. But at least the data is available on the disc, and not dependent upon servers for the game to work. (Ignoring patches and online only content etcetera, which I too acknowledge is a HUGE problem.)
You always make valid points Adam! I hate seeing people dislike your videos because they are Bias. Kudos to always being straight up and telling it 100% how it is. If you cannot understand where Adam is coming from then you are taking him the wrong way, or you are Bias.
I just use a spare 1TB HDD I had lying around from an old laptop. Surprisingly the PS4 works with old Toshiba laptop HDD. It's also very easily swappable, you can find videos on UA-cam showing how it's done. So having external HDD support for me is not very important but would be nice to have.
I really tried to like the PlayStation 4. Bought it at launch but sold it in August for an Xbox One. The controller for PS4 was much better then the previous PSs' but still that analog stick is in the wrong spot;) plus it always needed a charge when I wanted to play something. The UI is both boring and unintuitive and the system was kind of randomly noisy, like the fan would start reving up or it would make these weird ticking sounds??? No audio CD support also frustrated me and I assumed an update would remedy it but after 6+ months I knew it was never coming so I had to get going. That was my straw I guess. My biggest complaint though is the whole mandatory installation of games period!(Xbox One shares this huge negative). Why can't they just run off the disc like always damn it? Anyway, another great video. Love hearing your well thought out take on all things gaming!
***** I have a 3tb drive for my Xbox One but storage though part of the issue, is not the whole point I was getting at. Consoles should be simple. Insert game and enjoy. I can deal with long load times.
Hey man i know this is an 8 month old comment but i'm considering of trading my ps4 for an xbox and i wanted to know how is the xbox considering you've been using it for 8 months now. Would you mind giving me a pros cons list i would really appreciate that as i'm about to make the trade off in an hour lol
Hey Adam I just wanna tell you how great your videos are i really enjoy them i've been a subscriber for over 2 years now, Ive watched every video you put out and i got to tell you how happy i am to see someone who appreciates video games for what they trully are; Art forms, and not some dumb blips on a screen. Am also happy to see someone who has the same excitement, love, care for them as i do whether you are an Xbox fan PlayStation fan or a Nintendo fan(or other stupid non important nomenclature) the most important thing is that you love video games and you treat them with the respect they deserve because they are part of our history. I grew up around the 80s- 90s era and video games have been with me though the happiest days and the most disappointing days of my life thats why i'd like to think that they are a part of me. I gottta tell you also that you're very knowledgeable about video games and video game history have ever thought of compiling your thoughts and knowledge into making a "documentary" about video game history? I think it would be very interesting and very entertaining for anyone who appreciates video games as you and me . Anyway i just wanted to tell you this since it could possible be the last gen (of gaming consoles... I hope it wont .... lets hope so at least). Keep up the amazing work!! You're awesome :D
"Adam why aren't you a PC gamer? theres so much fuckin better stuff on there like OMG" I don't get why PC gamers can't just leave us be. I grew up on consoles, I will remain on consoles.
Born to Die I'd say an awesome combination would be a good PC, and a Wii U for that console experience. Wii U is the only one that doesn't try to beat PC because PC will always win.
Bob Saget yeah wii u is doing its own thing that nintendo always does. personally i havent found a fun game or anything appealing from nintendo since the n64.
I on the other hand can't understand why not just do both? I do and I'm happy camper. Of course if you don't support digital at all like Adam then PC might not be an option, because even physical copies are now just installation discs on PC. I enjoy affordable new games on PC and for some i prefer controls on PC and I collect for consoles and it's only physical copies on console for me. So even if buy brand new release for PC like 20 bucks and collect the same gamer for console later like 10 bucks I still don't pay anywhere near 60 bucks per game and I enjoy the games I want on day one.
Born to Die I marked your comment as spam, as it doesn't contribute to this conversation in any way. Theres no point in regurgitating the same shit that we consoles gamers hear everyday.
siIvermate "I don't get why PC gamers can't just leave us be" i gave a reason why and i was being civil and rational. you seem to have some animosity towards pc gamers you refer to yourself as "us" and "we console gamers" like its some exclusive club or your different (we're both gamers) you have a "us vs them" mentality which is pretty immature and childish and just keeps fanning the flames between pc gamers and console gamers because in the end were are all the same, fans of polygons and pixels moving in an entertaining way. grow up kid.
Actually, with a PS4 you pretty much are a PC gamer now: Both xbone and PS4 are just tiny gaming PCs with custom OS. Not only that you made the point earlier that there won't be another generation which I agree with: If you're gonna just stream games and have digital versions only anyway, the same argument you're making here applies: Well it's the same thing, thin clients and streaming boxes, digital only games, and that one looks better on PC so why not just go PC? Since PC hardware is actually sold at a good profit margin it might be the only option in the future for having something physical that is not entirely cloud based, some food for thought.
What seperates him from being a 'PC gamer' is that he only plays solid releases. Very few, if any, PC games are still released on discs/cartridges or any other form of physical media. That is where he draws the line and differentiates.
I never understand what made an Console to an Mini PC. . . like people said that the Xbox was a PC but the other Consoles where not. . . is it just about the HDD ?
Actually you are wrong. It doesn't matter what architecture is inside those consoles, they still are just gaming consoles, nothing else. With that logic consoles that has Power PC architecture are old Macs?
Falling Pictures Productions Right but Adam himself sees the writing on the wall already: Physical media is not going to last, maybe not even another generation. Although I could be dead wrong: look at the Net neutrality if ISPs are not stopped then yes anything cloud based has no future in USA at least.
TsunaTsurugi It's the exact same architecture this time: x86 processor. In the past the architectures were vastly different and that implied different programming and no good way to directly compare but this time around it's just a tiny PC it works exactly the same.
CoD performs better on X1 The controller is better on X1 The online infrastructure is better on X1 The CPU is much better and only getting even more powerful on X1
Looking at Sony objectively, I honestly believe that they will be fine. Sony Pictures, Sony Computer Entertainment, and Sony Insurance are doing fine, divisions like Sony Mobile have the POTENTIAL to turn a profit, and since the Xperia Z3 line of phones are now on Verizion, T Mobile, and Sprint I believe are all selling them. If they market the phones right, they'll start selling more phones, and start turning in profits. As for their Sony Bravia division; they should focus on 4K make it the forefront of the next generation of TV's; as Sony has some of the (price-wise) cheapest, most well-designed, and most beautiful 4K TVs in the market. The problem with Sony now is not in their product quality, but in their marketing sector. If Sony marketed their TV's, Xperia Z3 phones, cameras, AND the PSVITA the way they market the PS3 and PS4 we'd see the company turning a profit for once.
Jon Barrett Good. Then in response to your original question, it varies from console to console. Some are easy, some require a lot of work. Any particular one you're looking into?
Great video! I would like to comment 'Unless you're a PC gamer, then why are you even watching this' I am a PC gamer but I also buy every console at launch for exclusive titles My favorite console is Wii U because so far it has the best exclusives, but obviously games look best in 1440P on my R9 290 haha Still even after all the PC gaming, Mario Kart 8 will surprise me with a particularly gorgeous scene and I'm reminded that the Wii U is no Wii after all - it's Nintendo HD! =P
Cherokee Joe Same here man. I play multiplats on my PC or PS3. And have the WiiU for all the awesome first party exclusives. Bayonetta 2 is quite honestly right up there with Smash and MK8 as my games of the year. I enjoy PC for the PC exclusives I can't play on console. Games like Total War, Company of Heroes, World of Warcraft, Starcraft etc.
It's an old LG drive from like 2004. Bought it on Newegg in like 2006 for $10 before most people knew it could do what it does. I don't know the model number off hand though.
So interesting to see you thought that was going to be the last Sony console. PS5 definately isn't small box under the tv either xD but i love watching older prediction videos.
Hey Adam. I just got my Ps4 yesterday but I can see noticeable blemishes in the matte plastic part of the console. Especially if I hold up a bright LED torch to it. I've read around and people are saying it's just the way it is made. I've attached a picture if I'm not explaining myself clearly. i.imgur.com/Fk9Rg9W.jpg Notice the darker spots towards the center of the console and also under the PS4 logo. Would you say this is normal?
When i watch your videos the future of consoles and video games just looks so grim and dark, no one is making money out of it, no one seems to be doing it right, everyone is screwing up and in deep financial troubles, and then i go to a store and see people buying consoles and games, it's just bizarre to try to paint out a future landscape as to where it all will lead to. I belive that it would all just make more sense if they made consoles for what they are meant to do, which is play video games and focus on that, instead of trying to shift them to secondary features, which is what imo is hurting the game industry. Back when i was a kid i had y snes so that i could play games on it, not so that i could plug a phone on it, or that it was also a vcr, companies just want to force you the most weird, complicated technology on their devices, do a million things and oh... it's also for video games!. At least Nintendo in all their mistakes they are the company that remembers that the most and they pull up fun games that make you smile (will keep an extra comment for your upcoming wii u video :p)... but i always use my bluray to watch movies, that's what it was made for, and it has a controller that i can operate better, i use my ps4 to play games, not to watch moveis, or watch youtube or use the internet. oh, and you look better with a haircut :)
21:56 I agree, I hope they fix this to an automatic enable/disable because, as of now it is simpler to use an HDMI splitter. Also, in regards to your storage rant, The make MASSIVE capacity HDD and SSD's that you can install and forget about. No, you can't store games on externals, but you can back up all the patch files through USB solving the main issue of server support.
I just wanted to let you know that I just recently discovered your channel and your videos and i've been hooked since the first one. I, as well, am a HUGE Sega fan. Freakin' huge. I greatly admire your gaming knowledge and your videos always provide me with more and more information. So thank you very much and don't stop!
nearly 6 years later what do you think about Sony making 7.76 billion in profit from April 1st, 2019 - March 31st, 2020 and ($2.19B Profit from the Playstation Devision) and $8.06 Billion in profit from April 1st, 2018 - March 31st, 2019 (2.81 Billion Profit from the Playstation Devision). Sony completely made up from their losses from 2007 - 2014 with just those two fiscal years alone and they were also extremely profitable in 2017 and 2016 as well and they still have their Xperia smartphone devision and film Division in 2020 and even made a 600 million dollar profit off it even with its lowest sales ever for smartphones and they don't have the Bond Franchise anymore! The reason I bring this up is because if Sony didn't have the Playstation division the past two years they still made 5-6 Billion in profit! Fiscal Year 2018: www.sony.net/SonyInfo/IR/library/presen/er/pdf/18q4_sonypre.pdf Fiscal Year 2019: www.sony.net/SonyInfo/IR/library/presen/er/pdf/19q4_sonypre.pdf (Note: Sony made there second highest year in profit with only 13.6 million PS4 sales in the past fiscal year which is the lowest amount of systems Sony has sold in a year since 1997 because even in the PS3 and the PSP years sold more than 13.6 million systems combined in their years and PS2 sales also added in there. Its amazing Sony made so much profit in one year with so many little system sales and with PS5 R&D going on right now! Sony spent 400 Million alone in 2001 with IBM just to make the Cell Processor Chip with the PS3 so I imagine the PS5 R&D isn't cheap as well but they still were profitable!) Edited to include links to Sony's Investor Relations for their last two Fiscal Years.
@@AdamKoralik thank you so much for replying, out of curiosity do you think PS4 will cross 150 million install base? if not it will be the first gen since the 5th gen where no system hit 150 million (PS2 did it in 6th, and DS did it in 7th.) there are more markets nowadays (China, and Singapore for example) the PS2 didn't have and maybe they can silently sneak a UHD blu ray disc drive so it can be a cheap uhd blu ray player in third world countries. Also the PS2 didn't get released in Brazil until 2009 (A FULL NINE YEARS LATER, imagine Wii U launching somewhere next year or 3DS launching somewhere this year) while PS4 was outselling Xbox One back when PS4 was $1200 and Microsoft was able to get Xbox One down to $500 there. I think it might break 150 million if Sony can get its price down to $149 (The price of the DS by the 8 year mark in November 2021 in other countries.) Also do you think PS4 will be the first the system to sell 2 billion games? PS2 currently hold the record as of 2012 with 1.6 billion games sold and the PS4 is currently around 1.2 billion games (I recently brought a PS2 Game "Ski Shoot" for $15 at a Walmart this month for $15 so I wonder how close to 2 billion the PS2 is too 2 billion game sales? www.sie.com/en/corporate/data.html I can't find it but thanks to digital the PS4 broke the record in 2018 with around 257 Million games sold in a single fiscal year, more than the PS2 ever saw in any of its years and 2019 I think was right behind the PS2's best year of software! Edit you can find PS4's best Software sales per year in the same place as system sales if you scroll down a bit.
Nice review adam! I really want a ps4 however I'm just wondering if there's that concern of no external hard drive option isn't it a risk buying and installing games like injustice, tomb raider etc. Which are just remasters w/ dlc content and can be bought on previous gen consoles?
Adam could you do a video with your perspective and predictions for the PS Vita TV? Would like to get your input on that device, Because im kinda interested in getting one.
It's really not that bad? I've always had a pc hooked up to my Living room TV since s-video days, most games work/run well, hardly any hiccups, any controller you ever wanted, nearly unlimited options available - what more can you ask for? This is coming from a console gamer, you need to get on that PC gaming train my friend - you are missing out :L
I don't understand why people are dissapointed with tbis generation. Last I cheched the first year or two is never representative of the whole generation.
the launch is not the representative of the console generation, that's true, but the end of life cycle is, and I'm sure PS4 will have more games on the line during this generation, but if holiday 2015 fails to impress with the level of anticipation, then consumers might just lose the interest with the console throughout the generation because they can't wait more than two years, look at the 6th generation of consoles with the PS2, not even a year after the launch and we were granted with tons of quality games, oh and even having Tekken Tag Tournament and Timesplitters on the launch helped too
I recently got a ps4, and I have to agree about the controller. I always felt that the xbox360 one was just looked like the last step in evolution and archetype that every controller should follow because I thought it was the best feeling one at the time. I think the reason it changed was because I sunk time into the ps4 controller and realized how much better it felt in the hand, and how much more precise those short and fat joysticks are. The triggers still suck tbh, but that comes from being spoiled by clicking on a mouse for so long. It's the same for nearly every controller's triggers.
Actually the easiest way is on DVD-ROM drive that was released in like 2004 made by LG. I don't remember the model number off hand. It's able to read GameCube and WIi discs.
Wii U is the only console that makes any kind of sense this generation. PS4 and XBONE are just horribly underpowered PCs with a lot of badly optimized games. Games being optimized for the hardware is what made consoles good.
you mentioned that you can check data sectors on used games by ripping them to your computer. Could you make a video telling us how to check those sectors?
Smorewazherr PS2 is super easy. The other two require special drives. For the PS2, download a program called IMGBurn. It's free. Once installed, insert any PS2 game into your computer's DVD-Rom/BD-ROM drive. Then use the program to "create image file from disc." If it does this successfully, then your disc isn't damaged.
The fact that you said "can you really blame me?" proves that you don't like the idea of the PS4 being your console of choice. Why do you dislike the PlayStation brand?
No, fanboy has an actual definition that I do not meet. If I was a "Sega fanboy" it would mean I automatically hate everything else. Which is absurd, I'm 30 years old. I don't give a shit about fanboyism.
Then don't use the term "fanboy" dude, it has a meaning. Secondly, I shit on what Sega has become all the time. They're a joke. Hell, I've shit on their gross incompetence even at their height many times.
First time commenter long time watcher / subscriber. I wanted to comment on a couple of things you might want to consider. 1) it's a known fact that internal drives are more reliable than external. Heat in closures kills them. 100% mortality rate after 1/2 a decade. They are considered a disposable commodity. 2) internal drives are designed to last about 5 years (many last longer but a lot of SMART errors and sector allocations - read the studies put out by cloud vendors) Unless you're backing up drives to the cloud or gold substrate DVDs and storing in humidity / temperature controlled vaults, whatever drive you have now will not last as long as the Sony ps4 servers. Only solution is to find a way to migrate patches to newer drives as they become available and use original discs as DRM keys / proof of ownership. Today, I don't believe either have ability to backup drives to newer ones / navigate and modify in windows (as you can with older Xbox systems) I don't condemn piracy. I own all my games. But use mod chips to allow me to replace dead components and backup just for this reason. So the question is, which will be hacked first? My money is on Xbox one (hackers just like sticking it to MS).
Ok, so the Playstation is the only Sony product that makes money. So in their infinite wisdom they wont' make another Playstation. Makes a lot of sense.
checking and installing drivers, optimizing games, longer install times, broken ports, infuriating third party clients, DRM, compatibility issues, none existent physical media, random issues you have no freaking idea how to fix etc. These are the things the PC master race don't tell you and why I and many others prefer to game on a console.
Right! Like the issue that PS4 has with Watchdogs, it plays it incredibly smoothly on contrary to the fuck up that it was on PC. Probably those "issues" will continue in the future, but you're right those "issues" won't exist on PC XD
I can't get behind PC gaming. I acknowledge it has its advantages, but I just can't support digital content. To me a console is more than just the games. The console has...charm. It's hard to describe.
I don't know about the ps4 but on the ps3 you had game data and game save data and you could copy most of them to a USB thumb drive then save them on your PC or an external HDD. I know it's not the same as having the external drive hooked directly to the console but it's an option to persevere the patch data.
Adam doesn't really know what he's talking about here. He goes on about patches and stuff but doesn't mention that you can still update games on the psp or that you can get to your download list whenever.
My hope is that at that point people will find a way to make such things available via the internet. My fear is that we are being conditioned to just keep buying the same games over and over for the newer hardware.
Just thinking, why do you rip the disc, when the console won't install the disc if it has been damaged. (PS4/XB1) I know for PS3/XB360 it helps, but XB1/PS4 there is no need since the content can't be run from the disc. Thus, if it fails to install you know it's damaged.
Hey I didn't know that! My b'day is 12th November!!!! I copp'd a PS4 like maybe a year n half later and same with my Switch. Got that about a year after release. Only thing I remember getting on release is SNES mini, PS1 classic and Ultimate Smash Bros.
I don't know if people have been asking for this specifically but what do you think about doing a two year video for the Xbox One and the Ps4? I don't know. The retrospective video and prediction videos are my favorite videos you do so I was just wondering what you think?
Hey adam i know i ask alot of questions lol but i got a used ps4 yesterday i like it so far but my concern is will ps4 systems gey yold rrod or this thing called blue pulse? And if so how do you avoid it?
Anybody know how to do what Adam's talking about, the ripping games to PC to check for damaged data? I'm really interested in doing that, for 360 games specifically right now. I'd really appreciate any info on this. Also I subscribed, I really enjoy your videos
Depends on the console. The 360 is one of the more difficult ones. It requires an old 360 drive that'd been flashed to function as a DVD drive for a PC. Then you use software specifically for it. Next thing you know, you're ripping XBox 360 discs.
Ok, i'll get the cheapest drive I can find hah. Actually all my 360 games in my personal collection are new since it's a recent console I was able to get them fairly cheap, but Lost odyssey due to the insanely bad packaging (MS penny pinching to the max) has some scratches so mostly I want to check that one out.
Eddu Pastelle Just install it on your X360. If the game is installed succesfully, then everything is OK. If not, well... You may be able to play it, but some errors may occure. Same thing with Xbox One. Oh, and also Xbox One dont use Blu-rays at all when the game is installed. Same with X360. It uses disk only to check, if you really own the game.
CDs are totally relevant..... I'm a DJ, as a hobby and part time income.... I acquire most of my music on CD and vinyl... the only music I pick up digitally, digital is the only way to get it... similar to you not doing digital copies of games, I prefer a hard copy of my music.... I also have a 100+1 disc changer in my living room, so any good albums end up in that. I really must get the PS3 version of "The Last of Us"..... I have yet to play that game. I will likely borrow it from a neighbor to see if it's worth picking up, but everyone I've talked to said it was a good game. Thanks again for the videos... I'm still not wanting a PS4 or Xbox One, rather, a second PS3 and Wii U.... keep shining bro....
I have a Blu-Ray drive for my PC that for whatever reason is able to read PS3 and PS4 discs. So, all I do at that point is rip them with IMGBurn. If they rip successfully, then they're good. If not...well then they're bad. Very few drives are capable of this. Why this one is is beyond me. This is the one I use: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00EYY43H4/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Another great video, and some interesting points for pausing for thought, The point you made about the hard drive was brilliant. I don't own a PS4 or Xbox1 and am undecided of with one if either to use but it true that hard drives do fill up very fast, my PS3 500gb can't hold all the games I purchased only really about 70-100 of some games are huge (Uncharted 3/Hitman). I also share the concerns of what happens when the server goes down for good and over half my games dis pear into cyber space :(
Hey man I enjoy your content and can you please make a video about the PSVita if you can because I'd like to here your thoughts on where the Vita went wrong.
Nice video Adam. Unfortunatelly it is not easy to just enable external hard drive support. The problem is that all modern hard drives are formatted with the NTFS file system. This is the Microsoft Windows file system. If they had to enable external hard drives, then they would have to start by licensing NTFS from Microsoft. You understand that this would mean that they would have to pay money to their direct competitor. Then there are issues with the OS internal architecture. Playstation OS is a BSD Unix derrivative, similar to Mac OS X. It could require significant work to make support it. It could be easier to support external hard disks if they would be formatted with Playstation file system. But then it could be impossible for people to use them with PC without specific software.
Siqi Li Hello Siqi Li Nice to see an IT professional commenting on this. I am also a Unix/Linux/network engineer. I don't disagree with anything you replied. Personally I don't have any direct exposure to Apple products and I am not planning to have in the future (due to their pricing). A few points. 1) Yes PS4 could in theory format an external hard disk with a filesystem that is supported by it's OS. Then how would an average user unplug the hard disk and use it on it's Windows PC? Either Sony would have to provide dedicated software that would enable this access or only PS4 would be able to access the disk. It wouldn't be very user friendly. 2) As I have seen with my PS3, it supports only FAT32 disks. I don't know if PS4 supports extended FAT. I haven't tried it. The thing with FAT however is that a file can't be more than 4GB-1 byte large. This may not be very convenient as games grow bigger and bigger. 3) Good point the NTFS-3G. Technically speaking Linux uses NTFS-3G via FUSE (fuse.sourceforge.net/). Since there is Microsoft IP involved, the Linux Kernel doesn't support NTFS natively. It supports FUSE. Then FUSE in userspace plugs and mounts NTFS-3G. What it practically means, is that the end user is using a user application that accesses NTFS volumes. Do you think that the OS engineers of Sony can provide such implementation?
Did you know you can replace the Dualshock 4 thumbsticks with the Xbox one thumbsticks, the reason you would want to do this is that that rubber on the DS4 thumbsticks are very weak and are prone to tearing
When you delete game off the HDD, you DON'T lose your save games, and if you have PlayStation Plus, you have the ability to upload your saves to the cloud. I believe the patches are stored in a separate area of the HDD also.
When you delete a game that you have on steam it keeps your saves. The way that works on the Playstation is using your account not the dis itslef, and on Steam you also have an account that work the same way.
I know some games offer that, but I don't find that sufficient. They're just useless installation discs. Let's be real, almost NO ONE collects physical PC games.
Darn you! I wasn't aware of the CD not-playing thing and I would've never noticed had you not pointed it out (own like 0 CD's at this point). Now I curse my PS4 every time I pass by it! :P
I'm a bit late on this video, but your estimation of the costs of the PS4 does not take into account the retailer's cut, which is usually around $21.99 on hardware. So Sony actually sells the PS4 for around $378 per unit.
Adam. You mentioned a very good point that makes me even more weary of PS4 or buying more XB1 games. The fact that when the servers are taken offline and so many games are being released broken. One will be stuck with broken games. Are there any games for the PS4 that are not definitive editions nor broken?
Good information and valid points but somethings I want to acknowledge. The games on disc are fully installed to the console meaning the only reason disc is needed is basically to prove you own it. Idk if you've noticed but the disc will stop spinning about 1 minute after a game is launched. It's not allocating space that's needed to make the game run. The entire game is on the hard drive. I totally understand the want for the external drive support and on Xbox it matters. You can't upgrade the HD on an Xbox one without voiding warranty. On ps4 it's user upgradable and the internal drive connection (SATA) is way faster than usb.
You can just put in a 2TB 2.5 inch Hard Drive and not have to swap drives like you said for a good few years (Assuming you don't buy every game available on the PS4). And if you're really crazy about hard drive space, you can put a SATA cable in the PS4's Hard Drive slot and connect it to a 3.5 inch Hard Drive in an enclosure. Sadly, it has to be powered externally, but you can get up to a 6TB 3.5 inch Hard Drive in an enclosure, which will offer plenty of room for all sorts of media, including games. Also, I've heard that some companies like Western Digital say they might have 8TB and 10TB Hard Drives available by the end of the year. Sure, it might be a hassle to open up the PS4 and put in a new Hard Drive or a SATA cable if you want to use a 3.5 inch drive in an enclosure, but you get enough hard drive space to last you a long time.
Great video highlighting the good and bad points of the ps4. I got my ps3 three years after launch with a much cheaper price tag and by then there was a great library of games to play. At the weekend I actually made a list of 25 ps3 games I want to play, so I'm gonna run through those first and then pick up the ps4 in a year or two when the price comes down as the game library has expanded.
At least the xb1 version of a advanced warefare and unity has a higher frame rate. Pc gamers will tell us peasants that frame rate is more important than resolution. :(
I'm not a great fan of digital downloads. I only get XBLA/PSN games that I can't get on-disc. Thankfully SOME are released in that format. I.e. I remember Ubisoft released a 3-game pack of Beyond Good & Evil HD, From Dust and Outland. I just have to be able to put the games on my shelf. :P Even when I bought the digital-only (at least on consoles) AC Liberation HD on PSN I still felt a need to snap up a physical copy that was a PC-only release. I don't even play it but it's still nice to have an actual box.
Pointing out that servers don't last forever just depresses me. I know it's true but I hadn't even considered about patches. I haven't even played about half my Wii U collection (I have about 40 games for that console) and this just makes me want to go put the discs in once each just to make sure all the updates are installed for them. I don't have TIME. Why can't these servers wait on ME?
I have been extremely pleased with my PS4. The streaming abilities have helped me do more live events with fans, the games have been pretty solid and have been fun to review, and the ability to remote play everything on my PS Vita rocks for when I want to catch up on documentaries while playing some goofy, mindless games!
I haven't tried remote play yet, works well huh?
AdamKoralik It does work really well but try sitting close to your wireless modem at first until you learn the range. Mine works pretty well in the full house with a signal booster set up.
Not super useful but I like having it for grinding levels in Pier Solar HD on PS4 and such.
sampson ireman Why do people who write comments like this disable replies?
I find it funny how you said at about 30:28 "if your a PC gamer than i don't even know why your watching this" because i am a PC gamer and yet i love hearing about how the consoles this time around are doing (and i generally like your videos anyways), but i guess you could say i'm one of those PC gamers who is not all "PC GAMING MASTER RACE, as i understand why you don't do PC gaming and why some might not like it (though i really do not get all the flame wars that go on between PC and console fanboys, why can't we all just enjoy gaming regardless of platform?) ,either way nice video as always.
That was more of a joke than a serious comment. Thanks for watching!
I am a total pc gaming master race but I get that the pc has its downsides. I respect that Adam likes the consoles and that is ok but I prefer the pc
Very informative! I watched it from beginning to end. Keep it up! :)
Thanks for watching!
I do not support digital either. All it is just a rental service. Physical copies are the way to go. Awesome stuff Adam.
Thanks for watching, "Jack"!
AdamKoralik Your welcome. What does that mean.
Justin'sMovies/Games Your profile picture is Jack Nicholson in the Shining is it not?
Yep your right.
I really like that you are so responsive and active around your fans and subscribers, thanks!
HeroesOfTime Thanks for watching!
*****
I have a 3tb drive for my Xbox One but storage though part of the issue, is not the whole point I was getting at.
Thanks for the kind words.
As for the documentary, I never really considered it in any formal sense, no.
"Adam why aren't you a PC gamer? theres so much fuckin better stuff on there like OMG"
I don't get why PC gamers can't just leave us be.
'I don't think they'll be a PS5' sorry Adam lol, btw love your content!
CoD performs better on X1
The controller is better on X1
The online infrastructure is better on X1
The CPU is much better and only getting even more powerful on X1
I hope you're right man.
AdamKoralik For the sake of all the current employees and the consumers, I hope I'm right too.
I agree, I think Sony is doing slightly better than before if a company as big as Sony were to go belly up it would definitely cause shockwaves.
Excellent video Adam. Love your content :)
25:43 just get a 1tb hardrive and you wont half to have so many or hell if you still have that problem get an even bigger one
Can you make a video on how you check if any data sectors are damaged on your discs please? I would be very interested in seeing how you'd do that.
NovaCrackers Rip it to your PC. If an error occurs it's damaged.
+Jon Barrett You need to enable replies dude.
AdamKoralik Sorry man, didn't even know I had disabled replies. I think I fixed it.
Jon Barrett
Good. Then in response to your original question, it varies from console to console. Some are easy, some require a lot of work. Any particular one you're looking into?
AdamKoralik I just bought my first Dreamcast and plan to start building it's library. I'd like to know how to verify those games.
Jon Barrett
Ah, that's the hardest one.
It required a broadband adapter and knowledge of networking.
Adam, what do you think about the new 3ds and the direction Nintendo is going with it? Just curious
Dude, Adam, these videos are awesome i love these sorts of videos from you keep it up!
1 year already?? wtf time!!
Exactly.
And now it's turning 7 this year
Excellent video adam,once again
Thanks Pat!
I do believe Sony will finally come around & will add firmware update that will allow you using external HD.
I really hope so.
and also a sex panther dispenser
That would be great if it happened.
cant you just put in a 2 tb hard drive in? and fix your problems a little while?
Benjamin Moore
I put a 1 TB SSD in it, it's still a problem.
I'd rather not downgrade, SSDs are amazing.
Fantastic idea for some videos Adam! You always give some really great opinions!
Holy shit its already been a year since you last made the video on the Ps4
Yep.
I don't even game anymore, yet I'm addicted to your channel. Great insights!
Great video!
I would like to comment 'Unless you're a PC gamer, then why are you even watching this'
I am a PC gamer but I also buy every console at launch for exclusive titles
My favorite console is Wii U because so far it has the best exclusives, but obviously games look best in 1440P on my R9 290 haha
Still even after all the PC gaming, Mario Kart 8 will surprise me with a particularly gorgeous scene and I'm reminded that the Wii U is no Wii after all - it's Nintendo HD! =P
Thanks.
That was more of a joke line than anything else.
Question Adam. Where on earth did you get a disc drive capable of reading the Gamecube's mini-discs?
It's an old LG drive from like 2004. Bought it on Newegg in like 2006 for $10 before most people knew it could do what it does. I don't know the model number off hand though.
So interesting to see you thought that was going to be the last Sony console. PS5 definately isn't small box under the tv either xD but i love watching older prediction videos.
Hey Adam.
I just got my Ps4 yesterday but I can see noticeable blemishes in the matte plastic part of the console. Especially if I hold up a bright LED torch to it. I've read around and people are saying it's just the way it is made. I've attached a picture if I'm not explaining myself clearly.
i.imgur.com/Fk9Rg9W.jpg
Notice the darker spots towards the center of the console and also under the PS4 logo. Would you say this is normal?
Mine doesn't appear to look like that.
Try putting some Pledge on it and cleaning the case a little.
Thank you!
This is so outdated like super outdated and don’t know why I watching this. Maybe I see what happened back then from now.
Fiscal Year 2018: www.sony.net/SonyInfo/IR/library/presen/er/pdf/18q4_sonypre.pdf
Fiscal Year 2019: www.sony.net/SonyInfo/IR/library/presen/er/pdf/19q4_sonypre.pdf
(Note: Sony made there second highest year in profit with only 13.6 million PS4 sales in the past fiscal year which is the lowest amount of systems Sony has sold in a year since 1997 because even in the PS3 and the PSP years sold more than 13.6 million systems combined in their years and PS2 sales also added in there. Its amazing Sony made so much profit in one year with so many little system sales and with PS5 R&D going on right now! Sony spent 400 Million alone in 2001 with IBM just to make the Cell Processor Chip with the PS3 so I imagine the PS5 R&D isn't cheap as well but they still were profitable!)
Edited to include links to Sony's Investor Relations for their last two Fiscal Years.
I'm quite happy they turned the ship. Competition is good for customers.
I think it might break 150 million if Sony can get its price down to $149 (The price of the DS by the 8 year mark in November 2021 in other countries.)
Also do you think PS4 will be the first the system to sell 2 billion games? PS2 currently hold the record as of 2012 with 1.6 billion games sold and the PS4 is currently around 1.2 billion games (I recently brought a PS2 Game "Ski Shoot" for $15 at a Walmart this month for $15 so I wonder how close to 2 billion the PS2 is too 2 billion game sales? www.sie.com/en/corporate/data.html
I can't find it but thanks to digital the PS4 broke the record in 2018 with around 257 Million games sold in a single fiscal year, more than the PS2 ever saw in any of its years and 2019 I think was right behind the PS2's best year of software!
Thanks for watching!
Personally, I think those definitive editions are less of a risk, as they tend to have all the DLC and patches in them already.
Adam could you do a video with your perspective and predictions for the PS Vita TV? Would like to get your input on that device, Because im kinda interested in getting one.
I was kind of interested in it, but I watched a bunch of reviews and decided...it's not for me.
Give it 5-10 years & Adam will be a pc gamer without a choice.
He won't have that choice as I predict he will sell off all his Saturn/Dreamcast collection for a gaming pc & a complete library of wii games.
Won't happen. Why do you think I pick up some many classic games? To have what are new experiences to me for years.
I'm personally a pc gamer first and I can say that Adam would HATE pc gaming
pan am
I wouldn't hate it, I just wouldn't prefer it.
+AdamKoralik Do you plan on making a fourth video game generation series?
I'm sure I will eventually.
The crooked stack of games really fucked with my OCD.
That profile pic is fucking amazing!
Thanks, I made it myself
Sorry.
Hey Adam I am looking for a fire orange expansion cover for my n64 do you know where I can get one?
Ebay maybe?
I hate the way games are going. Everything is so generic now.
how do you date check gamecube games ? the only way I can think of is using a hack wii to rip an ISO but can you do it with a pc ?
Actually the easiest way is on DVD-ROM drive that was released in like 2004 made by LG. I don't remember the model number off hand. It's able to read GameCube and WIi discs.
Wii U is the only console that makes any kind of sense this generation.
PS4 and XBONE are just horribly underpowered PCs with a lot of badly optimized games.
Games being optimized for the hardware is what made consoles good.
you mentioned that you can check data sectors on used games by ripping them to your computer. Could you make a video telling us how to check those sectors?
Smorewazherr That process isn't necessarily legal. Plus, it varies from console to console.
okay, just thought i would ask
Smorewazherr Is there a specific console you're curious about?
ya, the ps2, xbox 360, and wii, those being the only disc consoles I currently have.
Smorewazherr PS2 is super easy. The other two require special drives.
For the PS2, download a program called IMGBurn. It's free.
Once installed, insert any PS2 game into your computer's DVD-Rom/BD-ROM drive.
Then use the program to "create image file from disc."
If it does this successfully, then your disc isn't damaged.
Today, I don't believe either have ability to backup drives to newer ones / navigate and modify in windows (as you can with older Xbox systems)
I don't condemn piracy.
It does if you actually break it down instead of grossly oversimplifying it.
Just subscribed. Like your videos and the lack of bias. Cheers from Belgium
Thanks for watching! Greetings from the US!
Dude, game on pc. I mean really. EVERY issue ps4 has does not exist on pc. Think about it.
Yeah but console exclusive games are sooooo good.
Almost every issue I have with PS4/XB1 have ALWAYS been present on PC and is why I prefer consoles (that aren't just gimped PCs).
checking and installing drivers, optimizing games, longer install times, broken ports, infuriating third party clients, DRM, compatibility issues, none existent physical media, random issues you have no freaking idea how to fix etc.
Adam Great video as always. I really like the information and predictions here. Very well thought out stuff.
Thanks James!
Hope you make the year 2 analysis. Love your videos.
+Jocaju3 Thanks!
As someone who does not know much about consoles this is very interesting and i'm learning a lot, you are very good at explaining!
Thanks for watching!
Can you swap the PS4 hard drive out with a 2tb hard drive? Is that easy to do?
You can, and it's relatively simple. But I'd still rather have external support.
AdamKoralik you can, but I don't think it is possible to use multiple hard drives on one ps4.
Homer sams I never said the PSP servers were down.
Yeah but you have been banging on about Sony shutting down servers when in fact they (so far) haven't.
Homer sams Because that will inevitably happen. It's not avoidable.
My hope is that at that point people will find a way to make such things available via the internet. My fear is that we are being conditioned to just keep buying the same games over and over for the newer hardware.
In December, will you do a Fourth Gaming Gen Recap? Just wondering.
Nah, maybe like March. Those things are way harder to make than people think.
Just thinking, why do you rip the disc, when the console won't install the disc if it has been damaged. (PS4/XB1)
I know for PS3/XB360 it helps, but XB1/PS4 there is no need since the content can't be run from the disc. Thus, if it fails to install you know it's damaged.
Just vastly more efficient to rip it on a PC. Takes a matter of minutes.
Hey I didn't know that! My b'day is 12th November!!!! I copp'd a PS4 like maybe a year n half later and same with my Switch. Got that about a year after release. Only thing I remember getting on release is SNES mini, PS1 classic and Ultimate Smash Bros.
It sounds like the external hard drive problem has been fixed since this video?
+Simon McDowell It has not. :(
I don't know if people have been asking for this specifically but what do you think about doing a two year video for the Xbox One and the Ps4? I don't know. The retrospective video and prediction videos are my favorite videos you do so I was just wondering what you think?
Hey Adam if u love shenmue are u ever gonna make a gameplay video
Hey adam i know i ask alot of questions lol but i got a used ps4 yesterday i like it so far but my concern is will ps4 systems gey yold rrod or this thing called blue pulse? And if so how do you avoid it?
Mine is yet to have that happen, my guess is the best thing to do is keep it well ventilated.
Given that I have no experience building a computer. How hard is it to swap out the hard drive.
On a PS4? Not hard.
Would the early PS4 consoles be more reliable than the early Xbox 360 or PS3 consoles? They weren't as prone to overheating were they?
Likely yes, I don't recall some massive early PS4 issue.
All right I will look into getting a second drive. Thanks a lot!
Eddu Pastelle
Just a warning, getting it set up is a massive pain in the ass. I bricked a drive trying.
Eddu Pastelle
Just install it on your X360.
Adam what is your opinion of Nintendo really starting with the dlc stuff. I mean I bought it all but what's your opinion
Great video Adam, really looking forward to your xbone and wii u ones.
Thanks!
Adam how do you verify if your ps4 game works on pc? I googled it, found nothing
Thanks man, very helpful!!, I'm gonna try it on my used game. Amazing video btw
*****
No problem. But be warned, the games can be up to 50 GBs.
Your on my top 5 for youtubers love your channel man!

Hello Siqi Li
Nice to see an IT professional commenting on this.
Adam, how do you rip a game to see if its defective?
Depends on the type of game. Different consoles require different tactics.
When you delete game off the HDD, you DON'T lose your save games, and if you have PlayStation Plus, you have the ability to upload your saves to the cloud. I believe the patches are stored in a separate area of the HDD also.
Cloud storage is the exact antithesis of what I want in a game console.
I didn't mean my game progress by the way, I meant the install files.
When you delete a game that you have on steam it keeps your saves. The way that works on the Playstation is using your account not the dis itslef, and on Steam you also have an account that work the same way.

Finally got around to posting a video about my thoughts on the PS4. Love the console!
awesome Adam! love the videos
Thanks!
Adam you do know that you can get solid copy's of games on PC right?
I know some games offer that, but I don't find that sufficient. They're just useless installation discs.
Let's be real, almost NO ONE collects physical PC games.
true
Have you tried the ONLIVE MICROCONSOLE?
WHAT IS CLOUD GAMING?
Ya it's came out in 2010
I know, I've used it on PC XD It was pretty terrible compared to just buying the game.
Ya the only thing good about is it didn't cost a ton of money like how ps now is.
I have not.
Adam, are you getting a PlaystationTv or PSVita TV?
Nah.
Lol, ok
Darn you! I wasn't aware of the CD not-playing thing and I would've never noticed had you not pointed it out (own like 0 CD's at this point). Now I curse my PS4 every time I pass by it! :P
Sorry about that.
+Stephen Ferris Possibly.
you can change the hard drive with more space ( my brother have a terabyte hard drive in his ps4)
I know you can, I mentioned it. I just don't find that sufficient. External support is just...so much more convenient.
AdamKoralik I completely understand. Yet in my opinion, I would take more raw internal storage over an external drive any day of the week.
Thanks for watching! Yeah, the PS3 became amazing in its last couple years.
has the harddrive issue been resolved?
Nah, still no external storage.
I would like to see you continue on to a 4th generation retrospective
Thanks, I probably will eventually.
I want to buy a PS4, but the fact that it doesn't support an external hard drive is troublesome to me. I'm just gonna wait it out.
At least the xb1 version of a advanced warefare and unity has a higher frame rate. Pc gamers will tell us peasants that frame rate is more important than resolution. :(
it is..
well to be honest, I'd rather prefer a steady frame rate than a higher resolution
More frames = smoother game play. better resolution=equals sharper and crisper picture
i prefer smoother gameplay
I only buy digital games on xbone and ps4 because if i do my friend gets them too
I got an Xbox a couple days ago. Having had the PS4 since launch. The software on the Xbox is just so much slower in my experience.
Even when I bought the digital-only (at least on consoles) AC Liberation HD on PSN I still felt a need to snap up a physical copy that was a PC-only release. I don't even play it but it's still nice to have an actual box.
Don't suppose you have any comprised list with all the arcade on disc games do you?
AdamKoralik I wish. :P
But no.
AdamKoralik I only know 2 worthwhile: The Ubisoft 3-game pack I mentioned and "Xbox Live Hits Collection: Limbo, Trials HD, Splosion Man"
ThePreciseClimber Are you in Europe?
AdamKoralik Yup.
That's what I do. Just get them patched and hope to play them later.
Sounds like I have a new project then.

Expect GTA V Remastered UHD Edition coming to the successor of PS4 next decade. It might be a stream only exclusive.
Aaaaand look at that, GTA V for PS5... Fuck sake Rockstar, just make GTA VI already 🤣
Have you tried connecting your Twitter account with UA-cam so when you upload a video people are notified about it?
Kind of, my Facebook page is connected to it. The videos get plugged there and then get promoted on Twitter.
ah... okay great
