So here are my thoughts on Nintendo's Wii u after two years of using it. I also largely discuss the state of the Nintendo corporation. I will be doing the same thing for the Microsoft XBox One, I have previously done this for the Sony Playstation 4.

That's not Sony or Microsoft faults, those are the lazy third party devs' faults. When Sony and Microsoft makes a first party game like Infamous or Sunset Overdrive they're polished. Likewise, when a lazy third party company makes a game for the Wii U (Sonic Boom) it's not polished.

I think the #1 reason why the wiiu is failing is due to the lack od advertising. When was the last time u saw a wiiu ad or if ever. Nobody knows the wiiu exist as a new standalone console. I truly believe nintendo was banking on people buying the wiiu because of wii sales.

Retrospectively, the biggest problem seems to be, outside of branding, that they left themselves in this weird middle ground where the gamepad was required to have, but rarely ever used. After DKTF came out, fewer and fewer games used the gamepad to do anything aside from off-tv play, and the only things it was used for was the menus in the Zelda remakes and a few games in the final year of the Wii U's life, and a few niche games like Tokyo Mirage Sessions, Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water, and Xenonblade Chronicles X, and one of those didn't even get a physical release while another had a physical release but no english dub and was full of censorship. Niche titles aside, Nintendo neither took advantage of the technology nor did they take the bold step to make it optional.
I find this incredibly frustrating, as to this day, the Wii U is my favorite game console. It had tons of potential, the gamepad was amazing when it was actually used properly, and the interface was charming and community created on the system through Miiverse was great. Now the closest thing we get to Miiverse is the drawing function in Splatoon 2 being taken over by furries cause there is no real way to form a new, organic community on it. Instead other communities choose to get on and take over. The Switch has no charm, it's a sterile machine, and despite the games being great, it lacks a lot of the fun that the Wii U organically had through its form alone. The PS4 doesn't have any real charm either, it's just kinds all business, though it's at least a bit better than the Switch and isn't just squares on a grey background. Xbox has it's own style too, but nothing like Miiverse or the Wara Wara plaza. They didn't have the often cool and useful when utilized mechanical potential of the gamepad, or the diverse selection of control options. It really is disappointing what Nintendo did, cause that really could've been great, and they were too far up their own asses to take advantage of it

Why is it failing? How about the fact that it gets almost no third party support? I just did a quick count and 10 of my 13 Wii U games are first party Nintendo titles. Almost every big game that comes out this generation never sees the light of day on the Wii U. Until Nintendo's home consoles start getting multi-platform titles they're never going to be taken all that seriously by most gamers.

Without the wii I would not be a hardcore gamer. It was the first video game console I had ever played intensely because it was so simple to understand. Today I do see its problems but it still sold 100 million units and converted many causal gamers into hardcore gamers.

The Wii U is definitely my favorite of this gen, and in fact is my second favorite console of all time (that SNES is hard to top). I adore the Gamepad and I find myself just fucking around on it randomly and having fun but yeah, I think you are right, if it goes they can do an $80 price drop (and then sell the Gamepads right next to the consoles for $80 or even $50, no big deal), as it is it's too close in price to the PS4 and Xbone. But the biggest issue is that nobody knows that it exists, still.
For exclusive content and great games, you can't get any better than Nintendo, but how sweet things would be with third party support. Talk about a juggernaut. Then it could take on my beloved SNES. Then it would BE my beloved SNES.

Here's one thing that I think is worth mentioning about the Wii U's sales and it deals with Ubisoft. The CEO has said that they have a fully completed game made for the Wii U, but they're not going to release it because not enough units have been sold. This pisses of many people, including me, but he did say that he believe that Smash Bros may boost the system's sales enough to justify releasing it. At this point, I kind of hope that this extends beyond them. When people say they hope Smash 4 will save the console, I think they mostly mean that they hope the game will push enough units that more developers will start to consider the Wii U a viable distribution platform that can give them some returns.

Id say that the Wii U is the best Nintendo Console till date (this is just an opinion)
First, backwards compatibility from several consoles
    Free Online experience
Multiple controller Options(Upad, Wii, Gamecube, 3ds, Pro controller, 3rd party)
Best Exclusives of the 8th Generations
    Nintendo's first True 1080p graphics
and probably the best Nintendo experience you can get(I mean you can play with Gamecube controllers, play Wii Games on the Wii U, The Upad is such innovation, you can download old Nintendo games thru E-shop store, best graphics that Nintendo has had had, and a great 1st party Line-up, Ect)
You play on the Upad screen while someone else seen something on your Tv
    Cheaper than the Competition
There is probably more reasons but, anyways this is why I think The Wii U is the best Nintendo Console(correct me if I'm wrong in something)

With the PS4, you can remove the internal 2.5 inch internal hard drive and replace it with any other 2.5 inch Hard Drive whether it be Solid State or Hard disc based without voiding your warranty which in my opinion is better than using an external drive. PS4 is better, it's as simple as that.

Just want to chime in here. I have a Wii U and it is my go-to console this generation. I had a PS4, but sold it after I realized that there was not much on the console that I really couldn't live without and cut my losses while I still could. There was a time when Nintendo had many of the features that you touched upon in this video, i.e. cutting-edge graphics, awesome 3rd party support, a non-gimmicky controller, etc. That system is called "Gamecube" and it was Nintendo's worst-selling console of all time. Mind you, I think that it is an underrated console, perhaps the most underrated, but it only sold 22 million units. The console had the most Zelda games, most Resident Evil games, most Metroid games, EA support, Capcom exclusives and no one bought the friggin thing. I don't think that Nintendo scrapping the touchpad while move many more units, maybe scaling it back or making a smaller, more cost prohibitive touchpad could be more realistic. Big N will stick it out with this console this generation and I truly believe that they need to start co-developing or paying 3rd parties for games. Much like they did with Bayonetta 2 and Hyrule Warriors, Xenoblade Chronicles X. I think if they shell out production costs on games that companies will be more willing to listen to Nintendo. Capcom is in financial dire straits and had Sony foot the bill for Street Fighter 5. Maybe Nintendo could shell out the money to bring Megaman 11 or RE7 or some other game to the console. The could foot the bill for a Sonic Adventure 3 with Sega, etc. You and I are pretty much the same when it comes to digital downloads, but the rest of the country is very keen on it. Shovel Knight which was a Wii U console exclusive for a long time did really well and digital sales have really helped Nintendo this generation. They have a ton of exclusive content on the Wii U store, much more so than in store shelves.

Good stuff, Adam. Great, passionate opinion and well articulated as ever. Completely agree with you about the class of the Wii U, too. I think you might want to check the usb/SD card that you were holding though, as you were pretty much smashing that thing down throughout. Regarding the original Wii, personally, I think my sympathy for the original Wii strategy was sort of a case of "well, whatever it takes to keep nintendo a float, I suppose", but as a gamer I didn't at all feel betrayed. Chronotrigger on the VC was enough of a nod in the right direction for me, (easily pleased I am), and now, in hindsight the Wii has indeed turned out some truly great, exclusive, unique games. (As well of course as an awful lot of dross). And, speaking as an enthusiast of pretty much all systems, Nintendo did at least get to live to fight another day after the mauling it received from the 360.

In this, what seems to be the last generation of video games, the Wii U doesn't need to do much to stand out. Sony and Microsoft are basically leveraging their futures on being the multimedia/blockbuster fps game machine that's so new and shiny you just have to buy it.
Whereas Nintendo just keeps running its own race, taking a pause to admire the pretty flowers along the side of the road.
But you're right, this cant last forever. This 3 horse race is winding down and one of the horses will be put out to pasture or eaten up by the other 2.
Me, I didn't get into the 7th generation until 2014, and that was by buying a used Wii. I liked it so damn much I bought another one for my girlfriend. The reason I waited so long was because I knew the best games would be out and at a bargain at the end of its lifespan. It also helped that the Wii didn't impose DLC on you, and could run multimedia through Netflix/UA-cam/Hulu.
My other consoles are the Dreamcast and the PS2. I didn't think anything could top the Dreamcast until I got a modded Wii. But this is truly my last console. It's kind of fitting, given how many games on the Wii are tributes to the classics on the NES, which was my first console.

That's a quarterly profit. Not annual. It's still offset by the losses made during the rest of the year.

Hey Adam - I didn't know you are so aware of Nintendos financials. But I didn't knew they are in such trouble, if we assume what you are saying is right. Either way - I hope they do better for now on. We as gamer may only lose if some of the three go away. Well, as you have maid your point several times now, this might just happen, but let's hope it's not that soon after all :-) But if Nintendo is making such loses, why are they hiring people, buying buildings and overall expanding their business operations? Anyway - I love your videos man, although I rarely agree with you, it's still a pleasure to hear you making valid point here and there :-)

    • @Fallkkaaoo
      @Fallkkaaoo 10 років тому +1

AdamKoralik Of course it's a just a math.
They make profit for two quarters, and they will surely make profit for third quarter (holiday season), I am pretty sure there will be annual profit for this financial year.
For rest of the video you have logical point, but I love they decided to keep gamepad and make him more useful.
And yes, Nintendo saw what's all wrong with Wii U, and they also see what's all good with PS4,
I am pretty sure that next Nintendo console will be pretty good, like PS4 after PS3, and yes they will drop Wii brend and gamepad. ;)
As for Wii U, they will keep Wii U userbase happy and try to make a profit, wille in silence they preparing for next console.

I will be sad if on the next Nintendo console the game pad is missing. Think about it - all Nintendo consoles are backwards compatible - at least a generation back. So, if they remove the game pad from their next console, this pattern will have to break. And that would be a bad thin! I love the game pad - it's amazing. Zombi U for one can't be played without it, and many others. As for Nintendo - many guys have tried to bury them and all failed. At the end - only time will tell :-)

Nice video! You have done a lot of research for sure! But I just feel like Nintendo will never drop the gamepad because it was the whole reason that the Wii U existed anyways and they seem to support it more and more lately. However, just like many people say, advertisement is the issue. I hadn't ever seen a Nintendo commercial or event in my country (Greece) up until Super Smash Bros. It seems like Nintendo is trying to focus more on marketing rather than anything else lately which is a big win for me. I also saw a couple of events and stumbled upon a Nintendo kiosk about Amiibo and Super Smash Bros. So it looks to me that Nintendo has used Smash in order to increase sales and they're doing great but there's still no profit. And it's also easy to understand. Here's why:
    239€ - Basic Wii U
239€ - Super Smash Bros. Combo
What? Crazy, right? 239€ is about 300$ for you in the States and around 170£ for you British out there. How much is the combo for your country?

AdamKoralik Why not? They could easily make that money back in extra amiibo and first party game sales! For every extra Wii U that would sell, there would be at least 3 extra game sales to go with it! Nintendo makes a lot more off of their first party games then they do off of each Wii U that sells!

It's a nice thought, but it's more complicated than that. Also highly risky for a company that doesn't tend to take many financial risks.
More likely Nintendo will go half way with a budget console (removes extra USB ports and stuff) and a smaller gamepad.

***** I'm pretty sure the gamepad has to have some sort of ati video card in it in order for it to be able to stream the video from the WiiU with as little lag as it has, so it really isn't a cheap device like people think it is. People are clouded by the low price of phones and tablets that are sold at a lower price than they are actually worth because of the 2 year contracts attached to them.

Only problem with dropping the GamePad is that they would need two separate menu systems. One for people with the GamePad and another for people who bought the models that don't come with a GamePad (if they ever did this.) That would get very confusing for Nintendo. That would mean two different firmware updates for the same console, only because one uses the GamePad and another version does not.
However, i can see an idea Nintendo could come up with if they ever did do this: Make the GamePad handle the firmware for its own thing. For example, if i sync a GamePad with the Wii U, it would recognize it and launch the menu for the GamePad. If it does not recognize a GamePad, then it could use the Menu system created for the GamePadless versions of the Wii U. The SNES was able to do this...Kirby Super Star has a boot message that shows if a controller is recognized or not. If it is anything other than the standard SNES controller, the game will not boot. A patch or something should be able to allow the Wii U to do something like this. However, that would make region free less likely because of all the different firmwares there would be..which is why it's region locked in the first place.

good video. I don't think they are going to get rid of the game pad, though. The cheapest bundle deals for Wii U are already selling at €250 in Europe (and I assume around $300 in the States). You can get the stripped down version for 200€. That's the price of the 3DS, and half the price of the PS4. If they drop the bundles down to 200€, they have a good deal on their hands, if they know how to advertise it. Which, of course, they don't. What a shame.

I wanted a Wii U simply for Mario Kart 8 and the Windwaker HD freebie. Little did I know that I would end up playing that system a lot more than my PS3. It REALLY is a great system, but it does really hurt that the majority of third parties have abandoned it. I actually remember the initial E3 trailers of this thing, where Battlefield 3, Aliens Colonial Marines (Before we knew it was going to suck), and other gameplay videos in the background were used to support this system. Too bad Battlefield never came into fruition with it (that would be fun to play in bed). At least we get a wonderful Nintendo machine, that has its own exclusives and continues to get better as time goes on with those. It might not be picking up the sales it deserves, but it does at least pack content and an enjoyable experience, and is also backwards compatible with the Wii, which helps a lot. There ARE some good games on the Wii. However, the inability to use the Gamepad/Pro Controller on disc based titles that at least have classic controller support is very shitty. You can download Wii games off the eShop, but what about those of us that already own the games? Just give us the gamepad/pro controller support in Wii U mode, Nintendo, please, for fucks sake. If you can do it with digital downloads, you should be able to work something out with the discs too. Anyways, Nintendo does a lot of questionable things, but I think we can all agree that we will still love them for their quirks. Because they at least have balls to try to do something new. I just wish they would also embrace some of the standards of today instead of always being completely different. (Region free should be harmless, that means Japanese only game developers can benefit from American/European/Australian buyers, it's okay Nintendo. Everyone else is doing it.)

I have an xbox one for myself and love the shit our of it, my daughter is 7 and wanted to get into gaming, So I got her a WiiU, simply cause nintendo was my first console, so the WiiU is her first, and to be honest prolly should have got one for my self, she plays the hell of it, and we play together a lot, and I find self playing more and more while she is at school, lol yeah she has yelled me to get off her game. and I didn't know at first but It can play the full Wii library, a couple of hidden gems in their nothing to crazy about but kinda cool. But yeah I brought 2 pro controllers for both her and I, and pretty much only use the gamepad to update and turn the console on. She does use the gamepad to watch netflix and play games away from the console, she will get stuck on something, and brought the gamepad to me for help, and have full control over the game, now that is pretty freaking cool, but other wise we both barely use the gamepad. And for Adam is right bayonetta is freaking great and with both games, just awesome. The WiiU surprised the hell out of me.
And something else people might not know but a really cool feature, we have comcast cable. The gamepad can fully control the cable box including dvr, and full control of the TV. again not totally worth getting but a really cool feature in deed.

$199 - Wii U Deluxe Console w/ 32 GB hard drive, pro controller, and Super Mario 3D World. You could still sell the Wii U gamepad for $150 or whatever - it would be better to make the 3DS XL compatable through a software update - the game pad could have been great had developers took advantage of the second screen.
I have a wii u so a price drop doesn't effect me, but it would move more consoles and possibly motivate EA and the other guys to get involved.

Glad to see we both love the Wii U(And the Dreamcast) and I too agree that you make a lot of sense, that Nintendo should remove the Gamepad from the bundle of the console. While allowing it to be purchased separately for those who want it. I enjoy using mine and wont be buying a pro controller for a while.
But maybe I am just a little too optimistic on the Wii U for the years of 2015 and 2016 as I feel like these will be good years for the console. Obviously it wont 'Win' like the Wii did but I do believe it's sales will improve in the future. Third Party Support is a plus, but there are plenty of games I am looking forward to buying that will be Wii U exclusive.
Devil's Third and Splatoon along with Zelda U and Xenochronicles X will be great additions and may help move some more of their consoles.
    I also own-
    Super Mario 3D World
    Super Mario Bros U
    Super Smash Bros U
    Sonic Lost World
Sonic and Sega All Stars Racing: Transformed
    Sonic Boom
    Injustice: Gods Among Us
    Bayonetta 2
    Batman: Arkham Origins
    Resident Evil:Revalations
Pac-Man and the Ghostly Adventures 2
    Nintendo Land(Of course)
So far I am enjoying 3D World, Super Mario Bros U, Bayonetta 2 and Smash Bros the most as well as playing Sega All Stars Racing and Sonic Lost World pretty often as well. I also just purchased Batman Origins and Resident Evil today and have high hopes.

Koralik-san I have to respectfully disagree about the projected impact that dropping the gamepad and getting third parties to make more 360 ports. the 360 ports that were already released did very little to sell wiiU's even though some of them ended up being the definitive versions of that game. Those ports seem to have reinforced the notion that the wiiU is a 7th gen console disguised as an 8th gen console (a notion I do not buy into btw). For better or worse the gamepad is a distinguishing feature even though admittedly more could still be done to justify it's existence.
My theory on the gamepad and the wiiU is that Nintendo wanted to go immediately from the wii to the "fusion" where the gamepad would have been a controller that could take games on the move sort of like an ipad. However at the time such a thing was probably too expensive while upgrading the wii and DS must've seemed the more economical and sensible option.

Good video, but I disagree. I recently got a Xbox One and was going to get a PS4, but am going to get the Wii U because I recently took a closer look at it. For me, their biggest problem with the Wii U was that I didn't even know it was a new system for one and second, I thought it was going to suck like the Wii that sits in my house so long without that I have to unplug the power brick because it totally shuts down. Marketing is their downfall to me. And no, I'm not a casual gamer. i have eleven consoles in my house, fully working, including two Original Xbox's, two Xbox 360's, and the old Dreamcast, Nintendo 64, Atari Jaguar, Turbografx 16, etc... So I know video games and play them to the detriment of all and plan on getting all the newer consoles. If Nintendo wants to get more consoles into homes, they need to get the word out about the console to people who actually buy games!
I say keep the gamepad, it is the main reason why I decided to get one, the innovation... Graphics can only get so much better in my opinion so they are on the right path!

Perhaps, instead of dropping the gamepad, they could make a cheaper gamepad. One with a smaller screen, one that removes the NFC and possibly the camera and speakers. This could then become the standard controller, allowing them to continue exploring asymmetric gaming while also lowering the price of the console. would there be problems with it? Yes, but they could be fixed. For example, games could patch the UI to be more attuned to the smaller screen.

I know Nintendo doesn't really focus on online multi player but there is no headset jack on the pro controller. You have to plug your headset into the game pad witch is inconvenient. What I'm saying is, they might have to add a jack to the pro controller. Thats If they decide to stop bundling the game pad with the Wii U. but they probably don't care that much to do so. Just a thought, I don't think the Wii U has blue tooth compatibility? or does it?

No DKC Returns: Tropical Freeze? I'd highly recommend it. Beyond that, it's a sweet Wii U collection of games you have that are currently out. Even though they have a year over their (console) competition, that's still an impressive library of titles to make a Wii U worthwhile. I think Nintendo's first party development teams have been bringing their A game like it's the super nintendo all over again. If their were more knockout hits like Bayonetta 2 or ZombiU on the console, they wouldn't have to fight alone for this generation with such a small install base.

The idea of ditching the gamepad is nuts. It would take thousands of man hours to retrofit all of the existing games to work without the gamepad (which is actually not even possible for a lot of stuff like most of Nintendoland). Even if Nintendo somehow found the resources to update all of those games it would still require users to download patches for every single game and I think a good number of Wii Us have never connected to the network. The other option would be to completely remove a large library of games from purchase for system owners without the gamepad. I just don't understand how people think this is sane idea and regardless it's not going to happen.

At this price its represents great value. Its the only console that really has the first party games that differentiate themselves from other platforms. I already have a gaming pc to play the types of games that show up on playbox, but only Nintendo offer a different experience

  • @CMRetroGaming

Adam, your assesment is spot on. Nintendo did a horrible job marketing the Wii U right from the begining. It's not all in the similiarties in the name, The Wii and the Wii U look, a like, sound a like and play too much a like. (GamePad not withstanding) I'm a huge retro guy and only have a Wii so I can play "party games/Wii Sports" with the kids. The Wii U doesn't appeal to me, because I don't need anymore of those types of games.
For some reason Nintendo seems to want to bank on their one big title per year. Last year Mario Kart, this year SmashBros, next year probably Zelda...but then what? This console may only have a year or two left in it, which is sad.

I don't follow you on a daily basis but once in a while (every month or so) I get to your channel and view a bunch of your videos. I always enjoy your videos and more often than not I do agree with you.
The Wii U is a fantastic console, it truly deserves a bigger install base than it has. Interesting theory about dropping the gamepad, and as much as I would consider doing it just to see what happens with a cheaper console without the gamepad I would like to see them go another route.
Drop the price, keep everything intact... would mean a loss per unit but not that much in all honesty and the fact that they could survive another 50 years with 250M$ in losses yearly.. they could do it. I know it's against everything Nintendo stand for but so is dropping the gamepad. Dropping it to something like 200$ - what happens? Likely people buy the console. And with their huge amount of exclusive titles they would still gain a lot from the games. I even believe this would even tease some of the haters from the PS4/Xbox one camp to buy a console just to play Zelda and Mario.. And for the love of god. Do some frikking advertising, I rarely if ever see anything from Nintendo. I dont know how it is in the US but here in europe, in Sweden at least there's virtually zero advertising.
And my last words - Play Pikmin 3! It's an absolutely amazing game, probably the one I have put the most hours in. Also, you should buy Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze.

I've heard at one point Nintendo would start Selling spare gamepads, because the Wii U can support two at the same time. And the price would be $100-150 for a new gamepad. I agree, the gamepad should be dropped, but not completely. Have it as an option, not as a requirement. Here is my plan to get wii u systems out there.
-Drop the Price with not bundling the Gamepad. You could halve the price of the console, or at least take it down to sub $200. I do think nintendo is prepping this course. You don't even need the Gamepad much any more. Almost anything on the system can be done with the pro controller or a wiimote. You only need a gamepad for system settings and browsing the eShop. Most 1st and 3rd party games can be played sans gamepad. Windwaker HD definatly. Mine just sits on my charger. If Smash Bros fails to push units, I guarantee Nintendo will drop the Gamepad.
-Revise the Gamepad hadware so that it's cheaper to produce and sell separately.
-Get blu-ray support. it would not take much to do this. It's a blu-ray drive in the Wii U. All they need is a license from the Blu-Ray group, and Nintendo could release an update to get all Wii U's running Blu-Ray discs and DVDs.
-XBMC or PLEX support. The Xbox 360 and Xbone now support PLEX Media Center and it's fantastic.
-Killer First Party titles. Games are what it's all about. A new IP from Nintendo would be nice. A new 3D pokemon game for X and Y as well.
-Killer Third Party titles. Xenosaga HD, make it happen Nintendo. Yakuza HD in America too, (and Shenmue III....maybe....)
-Expand the Virtual Console. Bring out games on the Virtual Console for NES, SNES, N64, and Gamecube that never saw the light of day in America (or Europe. I think they did just that with Earthbound on Wii U).
-DS/3DS/New 3DS adapter. Something to use on the gamepad which should be optional.
    -Get rid of Region Locking.
The Wii U really isn't a gen behind. It uses PowerPC architecture, which is much more efficient than x86 archetecture (which is why Apple used it for years), if worked correctly, the games can look and play as well as something on the Xbone and PS4 with some tricks. But PPC is RISC, so it's harder to develop for (which is why Apple went x86)...which is why Nintendo needs to get systems out there to entice devs to make games for it.

I think if they bundled in a wii remote as a pointing device then they could totally drop the gamepad. But there are still games that require it so it would be risk.

Hi. I live in South America and I am planning to buy a Wii U. If I buy the console in the US, will I be able to buy and play videogames here in South America? It would help me a lot if someone answered.

Didn't Nintendo say in May that they would no longer be losing money on the Wii U, and a few weeks ago, they announced that they've made a profit of $132 million in the past 6 months?

That's quarterly profits, which is good. But their collective annual profit is still in the red.
However, if they keep up the good quarters, then they'll be making money again. Which is good.
