The reason this generation feels so short is because the last generation before it (PS3, 360, Wii) lasted so long due to the economic recession. It's still a strange feeling seeing these consoles lives come to an end so quickly.
Assuming you mean this generation starting in 2013, then it was only a year shorter than the previous one (which in turn was also intentionally started prematurely by Microsoft with the 360).
Time, time, time for another console war. Time stands still for Iwata 'till he evens up the score. You can still see his wireless body stalking through the night, In the LED flash of Nintendo's Switch home screen.
What crazy about 2020 is that Sony gave the PS4 the best last year for a console ever and the PS5 a great launch. They published: Dreams Nioh 2 MLB The Show 20 The Last of Us Part 2 Iron Man VR Ghost of Tsushima And had Final Fantasy 7 and Persons 5 Royal as exclusives for PS4 Then had Demon Souls, Spider man miles morales, sack boy, astro's play room in November! I can't believe that ps4 had a better year than switch and Xbox one combined so late in its life!
Man, it's so weird to see these consoles go. This is the first and, so far, only generation where I own all three consoles, and I have so many games for them that I'm probably not upgrading to 9th gen anytime soon. Still, thank you for sending off the last year these consoles, this was definitely nice to see. Also, the Wii U launched on November 18th, not 19th. The original Wii launched on November 19th. Maybe you are more fond of the original Wii?...LOL.

The best thing about the 9th gen thus far is that it fully embraces the 8th gen. Xbox 1 and PS4 games are BC and nearly all the major WiiU games have been ported to Switch. Not lost to the past like happened before at times.
Nicely summed up Adam. Looking forward to your 8th gen coverage. Edit: Removed game titles that I presumed were absent from the video but were in fact present
Adam, I don't own many consoles, but I always love your videos. Even if I don't have the console, you make it interesting. Keep up the good work my friend!
My favorite kind of video. A bit of criticism: I miss the times you would show a stack of videos games for each platform. Also, I'm surprised you didn't put the Switch in this video, since even Wikipedia categorized the Swich as an 8th gen console.
The point about disc pressers is actually an interesting one. Nintendo stopping production of Wii U optical discs makes sense since it was a dead end for them, the Switch uses a completely different kind of physical media. PS4 and PS5 both use blurays and the new console is backwards compatible with the old discs, so presumably the production and certification process would be at least fairly similar, so there's a good chance LRG and others can get PS4 titles made possibly as long as PS5 discs are being produced. I'm also wondering that because of the whole backwards compatibility angle, how soon we will get PS5 / XSX exclusive indie games. Unless your game is really pushing the envelope (or using nextgen features like DualSense), devs might as well keep their stuff backwards compatible to take advantage of the large previous install base for quite a good long while.
I just bought my PS4 a month ago, and have never owned an Xbox One or Wii U. I'm loving the PS4 so far - so many great games!! I'll grab a PS5 in two or three years when they make a slim version :)
I wonder if PS5 and Series X still support patches for PS4 and Xone games. I think gen 8 and onwards is going to suffer greatly once patch data can no longer be obtained since lots of games either came out incomplete or broken.
I'm really thankful for the free upgrades Sony is offering on PS4 games that are also on PS5. It definitely helps fight off the FOMO of the new console generation and the anxiety of having to hunt one down right away. Right now I'm in no hurry to hunt down a PS5. Other than Dark Souls, there's nothing else that can't be played on PS4. It makes me happy knowing that I'm not permanently settling for an inferior version of the game.
Right? The new consoles getting actual desktop class processors is absolutely massive. Even at the time of release for previous gen we knew that the AMD Jaguar cores were lackluster.
@@Edmundostudios yes im aware of that but if you were to swap out the Jaguar cpu with Zen2 on the ps4 and Xbone you would see similar performance as next gen. Just lower res. Basically, the difference between CPUs is much much bigger than GPUs
What was discontinued was the One X, the One S standard (without any game included) and S All Digital, the One S is still made in bundles. Actually it is nothing new to almost discontinue a console immediately after the successor comes, like with the GameCube and the Wii or even with the Xbox and Xbox 360. The latter case was particularly bad because the retrocompatibility was not perfect, unlike the Wii which was similar in smoothing generations like Xbox Series consoles (meaning that everything just works when transitioning from one to another). On the case of the Xbox they discontinued quickly because of Nvidia, they tried to offer a solution to make the transition easier with emulation but didnt go as well as planned even for the games they managed to make it work, unfortunately, whereas the GameCube and Wii transition is natural as the current gen because they have the same architecture, no emulation required.
It’s been a strange but good generation. Lots of new things like mid gen machines, surprise announcements aka backwards compatibility by MS, great exclusive from Sony. I think going into this next generation will be a lot closer in terms to who takes front stage. This generation seems to be a bigger jump in terms of quality, features, overall game experience. So here to the next 7 years. :)
My favorite thing about this generation is how so many people were predicting either the Wii U or Xbox 720 (Before the Xbox One name was known!) were going to be the market leader but this gen ending up being sequel to the 6th gen! Honestly I never thought Sony would ever be profitable in the Video Game Hardware market again but in somehow in a single year they pretty much recoupled all the PS3 losses in the PS4's best year (2018)! Also the PS4 got so many games like the PS2 back in the day and my favorite this year alone were Dreams, Nioh 2, Final Fantasy VII, Spider-Man Miles Morales, The Last of Us Part 2, Sack Boy Big Adventure! I got more fun out of the PS4 this year than I got out of the Wii U in 4 years!
Always enjoy your video Adam and I watched your Ps2 slim last night as I traded in some stuff for it. Luckily it was pretty clean. Also, only 95 more Dreamcast games for a full U.S. set. I figured I'd share that with you. I look forward to watching more!

On some reflection, the one thing that might be worthwhile to note - or possibly not - about PS4's final year was the one accessory release Sony gave us (last December, wasnt it?) in the form of the DualShock 4 back button attachment. At the time, a lot of people, me included, thought this would be indicative of the PS5 controller, mainstreaming the idea of back buttons on controllers at last. I'd love to know if that was just a weird one-off or if further developments along those lines are forthcoming.
Weather you like the Playstation brand or not, there is no denying they have been on a roll in 2020 and this year ending last gen strong and beginning the 9th strong as well They gave us so many Game of the Year contenders last year and if Horizon makes it this year and Kena is as amazing as it looks they got 4 Contenders this year with 2022 looking to be insane as well with God of War and PSVR2 They honestly havent had a weak year since 2015 with only bloodborne, the order, and uncharted collection that year if they keep this momentum up were in for a crazy 7 years
@Shamenna I mean people who grew up in the 2000s,that would be people born 1994 to 2004. However, people who grew up on the Wii where born 2000 to 2006 (Now in High Scool, early College). People who grew up on Wii U where born 2006 to 2011 (Now in late elementary/Middle School)
I can see the PS4 definitely outlasting the xbox one. The install base is still rather large in comparison and the new systems are very scarce at the moment. Not to mention most may not want to upgrade as of yet. You'll probably see another 18-24 months of PS4 before being phased out and maybe a year of the Xbox.
I finished archiving dumps of my WiiU discs yesterday. That was "fun" I tell you but it too reminded me that I still haven't completed Mario 3D World which I really consider doing before the Switch Version gets released.

The reason this generation feels so short is because the last generation before it (PS3, 360, Wii) lasted so long due to the economic recession. It's still a strange feeling seeing these consoles lives come to an end so quickly.
It was because of a recession?
Son of Tiamat I don’t know if that’s actually true or not.
Assuming you mean this generation starting in 2013, then it was only a year shorter than the previous one (which in turn was also intentionally started prematurely by Microsoft with the 360).
Very good video. I like how you inform your viewers by going over each console from the same generation
Time, time, time for another console war.
Time stands still for Iwata 'till he evens up the score.
You can still see his wireless body stalking through the night, In the LED flash of Nintendo's Switch home screen.
Minor correction. The one S was not discontinued yet.
What crazy about 2020 is that Sony gave the PS4 the best last year for a console ever and the PS5 a great launch.
They published:
Dreams
Nioh 2
MLB The Show 20
The Last of Us Part 2
Iron Man VR
Ghost of Tsushima
And had Final Fantasy 7 and Persons 5 Royal as exclusives for PS4
Then had Demon Souls, Spider man miles morales, sack boy, astro's play room in November!
You know, it was probably because of I was thinking of Shenmue 3's release date. Too many dates in November to remember.
Great video. I love your videos on consoles the way you do them is unique I don't see many people doing console retrospectives,Predictions stuff like that.
R.I.P PS4 thx for all the amazing memories 2013-2020
ADAAAAAAAM! A few years ago I bought an Xbox One because of one of your videos. I enjoyed it for a year until I traded it in for a PS4, which I enjoyed even more. Thanks man!
Great Shirt 👍 and info on the wrap up phase.
I originally subbed for these videos and I watch all 3 each year
It's so odd when I think back to when these came out. It's basically like measuring my life in console generations. I'm a nearly completely different person from then, though I still watch videos about consoles that I don't even intend to own lol.
There goes dang Adam again ! Good stuff
The best thing about the 9th gen thus far is that it fully embraces the 8th gen. Xbox 1 and PS4 games are BC and nearly all the major WiiU games have been ported to Switch. Not lost to the past like happened before at times.
Shut up the Wii U is better than Switch.
@@ianeons9278 WiiU has some advantages and is still a great console but overall Switch tops it.
Nicely summed up Adam. Looking forward to your 8th gen coverage.
Edit: Removed game titles that I presumed were absent from the video but were in fact present
Ghosts of Tsushima was mentioned, even shown in this video.
Yakuza 7 is designed for the Xbox Series X, not relevant to the subject of the video.
@@AdamKoralik Yes you are right. Watching at 2x doesn't help as well. Corrected the post
Adam, I don't own many consoles, but I always love your videos. Even if I don't have the console, you make it interesting. Keep up the good work my friend!
PS4 becoming retro. My god that is insane
Had no idea we were getting a "7 year later" video! This and the generation retrospective type of videos are my from Adam!
My favorite kind of video. A bit of criticism: I miss the times you would show a stack of videos games for each platform. Also, I'm surprised you didn't put the Switch in this video, since even Wikipedia categorized the Swich as an 8th gen console.
March.
I always look forward to these Videos. I didn't even know the Wii U was still getting a few games.
I just bought my PS4 a month ago, and have never owned an Xbox One or Wii U.
I'm loving the PS4 so far - so many great games!!
I'll grab a PS5 in two or three years when they make a slim version :)
Thank you Adam great video stay safe 👍🏼👏🏼
Always insightful Adam! Thanks for your time and effort
Wow it was my junior year in hs when the Xbox One and PS4 came out.
Adam: if youre watching it the day it came out...
Me watching it the day after:
Excited for the retrospective
I wonder if PS5 and Series X still support patches for PS4 and Xone games. I think gen 8 and onwards is going to suffer greatly once patch data can no longer be obtained since lots of games either came out incomplete or broken.
Great stuff
Oh my gawd it’s time for this video!! We’re so old
I come to see this retrospectives every year.
Great video Adam. I always find the end of a console generation bittersweet. I love the PS4. I really do think it’s a fantastic console.
Thank you 8th Gen. Certainly gone but never forgotten 👍
ive spent half the day playing original xbox games on my 360. i feel old
Keep making these videos please!
Adam, please try to discuss the games that came of that year more, like you use to do before. Great video 👍
Sony Definitely killed it this year my favorites were Last of Us 2, Ghost of Tsushima and FF7R
Great video once again Adam
Still playing my Wii u!
One X and Pro could last a long time if they were not paired with such a terrible cpu
Right? The new consoles getting actual desktop class processors is absolutely massive. Even at the time of release for previous gen we knew that the AMD Jaguar cores were lackluster.
well that's basically the difference between 8th and 9th gen
@@quajay187 does not really apply to the base PS4 and Xbox one because those gpus are dated.
@@Edmundostudios yes im aware of that but if you were to swap out the Jaguar cpu with Zen2 on the ps4 and Xbone you would see similar performance as next gen. Just lower res. Basically, the difference between CPUs is much much bigger than GPUs
@@quajay187 Yes the cpu is a huge bottleneck in these systems.
I feel extremely fortunate to get both the Xbox Series X and the Playstation 5, feel free to check it out.
Love these videos.
They had a great run!
Bruh, I remember 2013/2014 thinking the base PS4 was a 1080p60 beast... Not as powerful as I remember but damn what an exciting time! I picked up a dreamcast that Christmas instead 😂
Big papa style gaming channel. Just watching Dawn of the dead 1978 new 4k second sight releasing in HDR10+ on my xbox series x. What a film. Big Adam in the house.
Of those three, the WiiU is still the most interesting and useful console
Weather you like the Playstation brand or not, there is no denying they have been on a roll in 2020 and this year ending last gen strong and beginning the 9th strong as well
They gave us so many Game of the Year contenders last year and if Horizon makes it this year and Kena is as amazing as it looks they got 4 Contenders this year with 2022 looking to be insane as well with God of War and PSVR2
They honestly havent had a weak year since 2015 with only bloodborne, the order, and uncharted collection that year
if they keep this momentum up were in for a crazy 7 years
“this is considered a retro console”
god, don’t make me feel so old man
It feels more normal...with age...
Doesn’t time go fast when we’re having fun. I remember like it was yesterday the whole Xbox one reveal lol
Xbox One is absolutely amazing 7 years later. I still play mine every day.
The Wii U is better than the Wii.
Boy the 2000s kids really hate me.
You loved my comment in 26 seconds. You are a wizard.
As a 2000s kid, I don't hate you. The wii sucks ass
2000s kids are now 20y old.. almost 21. Just saying xD
P.s. I love my wii u btw
Its a emulation beast for me.
@Shamenna
I mean people who grew up in the 2000s,that would be people born 1994 to 2004.
Im pretty sure MS need to keep the 360 Xbox Live service going to support the 360 back combat games on the XB1 and XB series consoles that use it.
I finished archiving dumps of my WiiU discs yesterday.
That was "fun" I tell you but it too reminded me that I still haven't completed Mario 3D World which I really consider doing before the Switch Version gets released.
Please do a video about your complete Wii U collection!!!!
The Wii U actually come out on November 18 2012 fortunately I still have my Wii U from 2013
Yeah my bad, I misspoke, I was thinking of the Shenmue 3 release date. Too many damn significant anniversaries in November.
@@AdamKoralikAdam it’s ok I totally understand
Last week, I put my PS4 and Xbox One in my "retro" game rack and installed the PS5 and XBSX in my main theater rack. I thought that was a little odd, but exactly as you pointed out, they are now technically "retro" gaming consoles ;)
C'mon guys keep it civil no console war shit down here in the comments.
There hasn't been much.
Did not feel so long ago that people started speculating about the 8th generation and complained that the 7th generation never ended.
And now we have gone through another generation
