@@waynecampbell6033 no actually you can still buy new Sega Genesis and Sega master system consoles in South America to this day. It is the longest running console but If you don’t wanna count that the Atari 2600 was first sold in stores in 1977 and when the Super Nintendo and Genesis were out you could still buy brand new Atari 2600 consoles.

Back in the day we owned a Sega Master System and Sega Mega Drive. My cousins owned one, my friends owned one. But no one, and I repeat, no one that knew owned a NES or Super NES. I'm not even sure if it was well known in Australia. Personally, I had never even heard of Nintendo until I purchased a VHS copy of Toy Story back in 1995 or 1996 and the Super Nintendo was mentioned in the advertisement for the video game tie-in before the movie started. Years later I saw The Wizard, but the NES never jumped out at me. The first Nintendo console that I ever saw was Nintendo 64, a friend had one and was playing Goldeneye on it, but I ultimately picked the Sony PlayStation over it. We didn't own a Saturn or Dreamcast, but until 2002 or 2003 there was even gigantic arcade called Sega World, it was full of games and rides and so forth. Sega certainly left its mark on Australia.

It's weird how SEGA was more of a thing than Nintendo here. My Dad owned a Master System when it was out, and never heard of Nintendo until the Gameboy.
Easier and cheaper to find Gameboy, Master System, and Mega Drive games

Adam, don't ever stop making your videos. I feel nostalgia every time I watch you talk about these system's. I truly feel something is lost or something is missing with these new systems. Granted there are great games on the new generation consoles but with all the problems of dev's and there shit riddled day 1 fixes and charging dlc for every freakin game I'm starting to hate gaming on any system. What I hope for is another video game industry crash so we can finally go back to where we started.

Sega Channel was the best. $13 a month for 50ish games. So so good. Better than renting games before buying. Sega Channel is how I found Flicky, Ristar, Streets of Rage 2, and Biohazard Battle. In my opinion, Sega is the most innovative console company ever. People can argue Nintendo, but Sega did so much stuff that often gets overlooked.

You're the most energetic UA-camr I've ever seen, man. I agree on Streets of Rage 2 and Sonic 2 being better games than the other ones in the series... Back in the day I randomly rented and played that weird McDonald's game you mentioned and it was the trippiest/coolest/most fun shit you could rent ... Have you ever played Landstalker? What about Kid Chameleon? Those are true Mega Drive gems that deserve dozens of sequels, but won't get them because Sega's company policies are donkey doo-doo!

In 1993, my brother & I were going to my Grandad's for Christmas & Mum & Dad told us to bring the NES with us with all the games which confused us. Christmas rolls along & there are two massive boxes plus other gifts. I had one small one thinking it was a WWF VHS I wanted but I opened it & it was Alien 3 for the MEGA DRIVE. I suddenly realised what one of the big boxes was. We got a MEGA DRIVE with a MEGA CD. Best Christmas ever! Lol. The MEGA DRIVE was my uncle's first so we got a lot of games including Duel Test Drive II which my friends kept borrowing. My NES went to my cousin who got robbed before Christmas. Aladdin was also one of my favourite games for the MEGA DRIVE. We had that until 1997 when we got a PSONE. Cleaning out my garage I found my old MEGA DRIVE with power cord. I bought a SCART & a controller & it works!!! But the MEGA CD is broken & the area it connected to is exposed & I don't have the cover for it which sucks & I bought my friends old NES. Lol

A thing to note is many people have done videos and discussions on this.
Prices are skyrocketing, due to synthetic price raises not value raises.
Basically sellers are saying they want more money, and charging more and more. ITT: Greed.
I got killzone for 5.99, but many will try to sell you the same game used, and scratched for 59.99 or even 299$.

Although I was born in very late 90s, Sega Genesis was indeed my very first video game console. Sadly it got stolen and then my parents gave me the Super Nintendo. My controller broke, and at that time there was no where a replacement to be found. So my father just dumped it altogether and bought me a brand new PS2. I skipped out the 5th Gen, and I have mixed feelings about this.

Ahh the Sega MegaDrive... So much sweet memories when being a child from 1991 up to 1995.
Also mate, I think the Sega was supposed to be called "Genesis" in EU as well, but because of legal issues with a band from the same name (yes the one with Phil Collins), it was hard for them to release it in EU in each country as Genesis (remember EU has different countries instead of states), that's why they chose Mega Drive in EU.
    Anyway.
What I think about Sega MD, is that it was basically the future of gaming, as SNES was not. Look at all the stuff SEGA MD introduced, which is still here today in consoles. I mean, Sega MD already could log into the "internet" called SegaChannel, as you said in the video, and you could even download games there. Like GoldenAxe 3 was a SegaChannel exclusive.
Funny thing is that I actually still love the MegaDrive model 1, it looks better than the US Snes that's for sure.
The 50 dollar discount was more than 100, remember games back then were around 100 dollars, so they basically gave you 150 dollar discount xD

Sega channel was through the cable tv I actually knew somebody who had that you would have to put a splitter in the line behind your cable box the second channel would hook up from the cartridge you got from the cable company to the network through coaxial cable. I'm not sure what other cable companies had it but we had TCI which eventually is no nowadays is Comcast.

My first console growing up!! My bro had the NES and then the SNES. Ecco the Dolphin, Sonic the Hedgehog, and Warsong were my favorites. I pretty much started with Sonic 3 and would borrow Sonic 2 from my lil sisters friend from time to time. Never really got into the first Sonic game as it wasn't that interesting to me. I did love the vs racing in Sonic 3 as I got to run as Knuckles before the Sonic and Knuckles cartridge was available. I don't know why people don't talk more about the competitive racing, I really enjoyed it.

There is even more revisions of Genesis in Brazil.
Model 2 is actually called model 3 here, and is the most famous model, with the more variations, even when Sega stopped the production of Genesis it was still manufactured here until 2009. Unfortunately, those later models came with built in games and the hardware was not the same, it was more of a clone system, there is even a model without cartridge slot that came with a damn guitar with a guitar hero type of game.

I remember in 1991, when Mortal Komat I was released, my brothers went to buy a NES and I stayed home, being a 8 years old... And they came back and I was expecting a NES ( mainly because of Double Dragon II :P), and then they arrived with the Sega MegaDrive and I started whining hahahaha, then my brothers said, just hold on okay, they popped in Mortal Kombat I (and we also got Streets of Rage 1 and Sonic included), and my mind was blown. xD Then later I saw a video tape of Streets of Rage II and I litteraly exploded when my brother took that game home!!!!!
I miss Sega and the Mega Drive era. I also loved the Michael Jackson game, the music in particular and the secret to turn into a friggen Robot and shoot everyone.

I remember buying my first twenty games I would ever need and got four different Genesis consoles w/ 6 button controllers for like five bucks at a yard sale.
Still play the first one I got and never needed my back ups!
So fuck yoooou MS & Sony!
The frustration with those new consoles are insane...the cost, the life span, all the dlc bullshit, offline playing, the fragile servers, the accounts, storage space, profile downfalls, and the 50/50 ratio of pulling in a controller for ten minutes.JFC, is it just me?
    Ahhhhh it goes on forever!
Best five bucks I ever spent.
Time to go enjoy some Xmen-2 Clone Wars!

Still have it but I have to say, that the game really was Dark Souls of it's time with difficulty and the game really not explaining its potion mixing ( I don't own the manual, so I might have played the game on harder mode just because of that) Still having great memories of finding out what mixes do and leaving the console on over night, so I could continue in the morning. Sadly haven't finished the game even to day.

Today I got the deal of a freaking lifetime on eBay. I got a model 2 Genesis (my favorite) CIB - FOR $80! I also got a $10 SCART cable (a literal necessity since the system only came with an RF switch, which is incompatible with TV's here in Ireland) and a $10 boxed copy of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (with manual), then rounded it all off by sniping a boxed copy of Sonic the Hedgehog (but no manual) for - you guessed it - $10. All of which should arrive just in time for me to squander my free hours once I finish college.

Seriously, though, great video. As much as I love Nintendo, I have insane respect and affection for Sega. They were so innovative, forward-thinking and just. Bold, I guess. It's such a shame how things turned out for them.

You aren't the only one who was disappointed with Sonic 1. Though Sonic 2 wasn't my fav game for Gen. It was S3&K. Saving was a big part of that I think.

Some lesser knowns I personally loved that I feel deserves a mention: Toejam & Earl 1 and 2, Contra Hard Corps, Eternal Champions, El Viento, Ristar, Socket, Kid Chameleon, Castle/World of Illusion, Mickey Mania, Chester Cheetah 2, Cool Spot, Boogerman, Flashback, all Climax Entertainment games (Shining Force, Landstalker). Probably a ton more.
One game you absolutely should avoid: The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle and Friends.

At 25:00 I think you fell for the longstanding myth that the SNES was capable of hardware sprite scaling. Mode 7 allows you to scale and rotate a background layer only... not sprites. Anything involving sprites had to be done in software, and the Genesis was just as capable at this (if not more so, due to its considerably faster CPU). So, yes, that F-Zero like part would have been near impossible to include in the Genesis version, but the swinging around of the bad guys? No reason why that wouldn’t have been possible.

Funny how you mentioned that Rocket Knight Adventure Font as similar to Back to the Future...
I always thought that Kid Chameleon cover was similar to Back to the Future... The Kid looked like Marty Mcfly dressed as the Terminator... lol
Btw Kid Chameleon was also a Great Obscure game... it was my second Game i have ever played on the Console after Sonic the Hedgehog!

Another example of Nintendo not wanting to be too violent is the game Power Moves. On the Genesis it's called Deadly Moves.

I really liked how Sega did Add-ons for there console to support the previous gen. If Sony made an Add-on for the PS4 that you could play older systems id buy it.
It would pretty much be a Portable drive one similar to the older PS3s that could read PS1,PS2 and PS3. It could connect USB and so you wouldn't have to worry about Data speed through the USB it would copy the game to the console but you would still need the disk to play it. If you didnt want to do that they could possibly make it so you could plug it into the PS4 power supply port and the PS4 and drive would share the power from 1 port.
Now a problem would be the emulation side. Since the PS3 and PS4 are so different, I think it would be easier to put the emulation abilities in the drive and it wouldn't even have to emulate the PS3.
Someone probably has a way easier solution to this (other than buying the specific console).

Genesis could totally do some mode 7 type stuff. It just had to emulate the code in software. But it was still possible the 68k had the bandwidth

Some see the Saturn's period and the failure of the Dreamcast as Sega's 'fall from grace', that up until the Saturn, Sega was a well run, well managed company. However my theory is that Sega was and is usually a very poorly run company. It's failure with the Saturn (which really killed Sega) wasn't the exception to the rule- it was the rule. Before the Genesis Sega had 2% market share, after it had 8 or 18%, I can't remember. Any of Sega's success can be attributed to 2 individuals and their teams. These people are Tom Kalinske and Peter Moore. Tom Kalinske and his team are more or less was singly attributable to all of Sega's success outside of Japan with the Genesis. He did so much for Sega and the Genesis it's too much to mention. I would highly recommend 'Console Wars' by Blake Harris if you're interested. Suffice to say, as far as managing a company went, this guy was like Midas- everything he touched turned to gold. Secondly, with Peter Moore although it was already too late for Sega, under him the Dreamcast was made as successful as it could ever have been by that point. Just imagine if Bernie continued to run Sega? In conclusion, in order to understand Sega you must understand that it's success and not its failure was the anomaly. That any of its success can be attributed to a few individuals who managed to make it so, and how we all like remember.

I know this is an old vid but I just came across it and noticed theres a error there's a common misconception a lot of people have, and thats the name.
The reason for it being call Genesis in the states was nothing to do with trademake but purely a marketing thing. 1988 is when Sega US started burning bridges with Sega Jap (this came to a head by the time saturn hit and everyone knows.
Anyways, Sega America felt that the name "Mega Drive" wasn't catch and didn't make it sound like a "Step up" so Genesis was the end result, its purely cos the name back then made it sound like it was a step up from the Master System and NES.
This information is actually from a interview with the then Head of Sega America in 2001, It was published in Gamesmaster mag in the UK

back then I was on "team nintendo", I used to hate sega, sonic and all they represented, but for the last 10 years more or less I like sega. there are very cool games on the megadrive, some great exclusives and some good ports, for some weird reason the street fighter 2 port just "feels" better than on the snes. the same goes for mortal kombat 3, it just plays better.

I want a complete in box CDX so badly. I personally have the model 2 combo, both complete in boxes, and would be willing to trade them, but damn the CDX has gotten soooo expensive. I like the Model 2 Combos, but they're just too big in width, maybe I'll eventually get a model 1 Combo to trade to conserve space in terms of width.
