I literally laughed out loud with the pic of the giant clamps. Startled the cat napping in my lap, but it was worth it!!! 😺 Love Keith Johnson's work. He is the king of fancy AF brass fittings.
Depression era desk...my sister still has her dad's. I did some restoration work on it about 30 years ago so her daughter could use it. They did have a tendency to become wobbly! Very nice job!
I bet that's a nice desk. Thanks for watching! Yea the top is only nailed down. I glued and nailed the top down to hopefully combat any future wobbles.
My favorite part is the little shelf inside. I have an adult size secretary desk with elaborate shelving system that I didn't know I needed until I had it. Chef's kiss!
Nice work! I bought the same size and style roll top at a discount cheepo furniture store (of course, it's all particle board with veneer), and I have come to terms it will last me the rest of my life at the least anyhow. I do like the job refinishing REAL furniture you have done (even if you don't have a j roller). I REALLY liked that Lucite drawer pull you used, it added an originality to yours that nobody else's will have! Thanks for sharing!
A childsize roll-top desk is probably a lot more rare than an adult sized one, so that's a score! And I learned something new - how to make a really simple drill guide, one of those, damn, why didn't I already think of that moments...
That’s a good point I didn’t think about how unusual a child’s roll top desk is. Also the drill guide really only works if you make the original on a drill press.
@@restorationrhode I rather figured I'd need a drill press to make one - my mate down the road has a fully kitted out workshop, so I'm asking him to make me one with multiple holes, one for each size drill bit. And that desk is a cutie... love it.

That is a myth. Back in the "good ole days" they made tons of cheap junk. Of course, 100 years later all the cheap junk is long gone because it was made with cheap materials and labor. Only the good stuff from 100 years ago is still around.
Kudos for wanting to learn to restore old furniture. As a vintage & antique furniture repairer/restorer, I would suggest watching John’s Furniture Repair, Mayfield Restorations, AT Restoration, Transcend Furniture Gallery & Flipping Drawers. A lot of good tips & tricks in their videos.
You did a beautiful job with the restoration! The only thing I was sad to see go was the cool drawer bottom with all of the shadows of its past imprinted on it. It would have made a nice nod to its history.
A little recommendation for the tambour door. Use canvas in a darker colour and trim the edges more neatly. The woodwork was meticulous, but the fabric you used lowered the grade. At first, I thought that it would be inside and not visible, but later I saw that it shone through between the slats, and also was visible when the top was open. Frayed edges and discoloured cheaper-looking fabric stood out like a sore thumb. 😊
Fantastic job restoring that! Was that fiberglass you used on the tambour? Brilliant idea for longevity. Much better than duct tape :) Q.) The channel name, I thought maybe you were in Rhode Island? But then you showed a decent amount of snow, and we haven't had any yet in the area, at least where I am.
