Next time you empty your jar of parmesan cheese, wash out the container and lid and put your Bar Keeper's Friend in it. It's air tight so it won't get clumped up and will stay nice and powdery til the end.
I feel your pain with the white stuff, I have a dressing table that was my grandmothers with that on it, I love the style but after doing the drawers I've been putting off doing the rest as it's queen anne style so it's not flat, once I have a place for it I'm going to find someone and pay them to do it.
Im 70. In my younger years, i furnished my home in "Early Atic" fashion. I was young with 6 children and newly divorced. I collected free sturdy furniture that did not match or coordinate. My kids were all under 4 and hard on everything. So, like many moms in my position, I primed furniture with a marine product and painted the furniture with exterior paint, matching the color to each room. I recovered cushions, made quilts, and curtains, and the house was a home. I hope my process helps in future renovations.
I'm with you guys, staggers believe that someone would find these piece nice in the state it had been let's say Re - Freshed ( I use that term loosely ) lol I love how this turned out, that hardware is to die for 🥰 don't make them like that anymore unfortunately. 🫶
Probably me 🫣 I’m not a fan of wood unless it’s a really nice quality and tone. Not baby blue though. White or cream and would put a barrier layer to protect the wood so it’s reversible without too much work.
OMG - $20?? What a deal! Eastlake. What a find. The hardware of this one is absolutely STUNNING!! And you really got lucky that the piece was in great shape instead of a few small repairs. The grain on the drawer fronts is simply heartstopping. This is probably your very best work yet. I love the way this came out. It is truly spectacular. A one of a kind. You did an absolutely wonderful job on this one. Bravo!! And, yes, restore the other one. Please!!
I have a circa 1880s-1890s dresser with a mirror that is a little bit wider. It also still has its ORIGINAL WOOD WHEELS! Loved watching this labor of love restoring this Diamond in the Rough! I look at mine every day and smile with glee! It is my favorite piece! THANK YOU FOR SHARING THIS RESURRECTION! B~}
Obviously a labor of love otherwise who in their right mind would spend 10,000 hours scraping, stripping, sanding and picking but you had me at knap joints!! Such a spectacular transformation!! Take a bow!!
As a furniture flipper myself, I watch a lot of videos like this. I love before and after, and I just want to learn. I have to say this is the best looking “after” I’ve seen in a while. The wood grain is gorgeous and you did an amazing job restoring it.
Those are called Knapp joints. Used for a few decades only prior to dovetail. I believe 1867-1900. Beautiful, strong, and immediately identifies a piece’s age.
Maybe because you have not been doing this for decades, you remember to tell us little tips, like sanding dust added to glue to prevent slipping. Wish I had known this trick 3 days ago! This is rapidly becoming my favorite channel. Definitely would like to see the other Eastwood piece restored
This may sound strange. - My German grandfather used to share so many stories of his childhood in the 40s.Tgey would use newspapers as insulationin homes and drawer linings in furniturr, as well as patch holes in walls with flour/water mixed. Furniture, they would mix powdered plaster in paint, which sometimes turned red if used with certain wood stains available back then. Furniture would be cleaned with soap/water, the shined with car oil, to keep the shine and make it last. Occasionally, you may run across a piece like this. I owned 2 antique theater seats once from an old opera house in Dayton, Ohio. They had the same chemical embedded into areas of the wood.
You did a magnificent job on this piece!! You were thoughtful, thorough and respectful in your vision and your craftsmanship. Well done, you!! I would love to see you do the piece from which you removed the hardware. My expectations of your work are not limited to restoration alone, but to whatever and wherever your artistry and craftsmanship lead you. I'm definitely a fan!
Oh….my…Gosh! Jamie you really out did yourself on this gorgeous and beautiful restoration. I’m so proud of you! You’ve come a long way. From editing, talking and explaining the process and you’re so much more thorough and meticulous in your finish work. From fixing/mending the broken off and missing pieces. Sanding and staining is perfect and the blending of paint to match is excellent. I can’t say enough of this video. Well done. I hope that if you sell this that you make a lot of money bc it sure is something to treasure. Absolutely love this ❤️👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼🙌🏼 Oh and the brass hardware 🫰🏼🫰🏼🫰🏼🫰🏼
Lately, on social media their have been tons of women re-doing wood furniture by painting them to look like something from a nightmare. Thanks for fixing one of their mistakes!
Absolutely beautiful. Imagine covering up that wood grain with paint! And whoever did so slapped it on so sloppily, leaving all those huge drips hanging off. I'm so glad you saved this piece.
First, let me tell you how gorgeous this turned out! Second, the amount of paint you had to remove was insane! Third, your repairs looked really great! Definitely restore the other dresser.
Absolutely beautiful and a credit to your hard work and attention to detail. Well done!!! 😳. I'd love to see the other antique too. I can hardly believe how lovely the piece was beneath the ghastly paint. Really worthwhile.👍😊
Duude !!!! You are freaking amazing!! The amount of detail you put into this piece is awesome !! It is simply stunning!! I love that you put the mirror back on, so many do not. Love, love, love , it. ♥♥♥ ps. I'm an eighty year old great grandmother...I still admire beauty!!
It always pains me seeing Eastlake furniture destroyed like that. I’ve been trying to find an Eastlake dresser that isn’t completely destroyed and each is expensive as heck. I’m glad you saved this one.
Your work on this was stunning! Imagine how proud the original craftsman would be watching you restore it to such beautiful condition after all these years. :)
Fantastic restoration! You just gave it another 100 years. I always write some where discrete the restoration date and a little information on it and then sign it. You should differently do that on this master piece. 👍👍👍👍👍
I checked online, and the plaster-like primer might be a shellac-based primer. They have good adhesion, have a fast drying time, and block stains from bleeding through the paint. As far as removal goes, acetone is the recommended solvent for removing shellac. As for the purplish color, another possibility is a reaction with the tannin in the wood. People can get purple stains on their hands from certain kinds of wood. People say that lemon juice removes them. Oxidation and sunlight can cause certain woods to turn colors as a result. Don't know if that is behind it, but it's a possibility to consider.
Incredible! I especially like how he went over the details in the beginning and throughout the process. And the comprehensive pix/video of the finished product. So often people whip over the finished product which is frustrating. This whole process was a joy to watch! Thanks Flippa!!!
Thanks so much! Glad you enjoy the process and the finished shots - I try to make the after shots a bit lengthy so if anyone does want a thorough look they can!
So much work! Sometimes I wonder why we do it. Is it the love of wood, the love of the craftsmanship that went in to creating the original piece? The satisfaction when we are done that we have restored the original beauty? Perhaps a combination of things. The more challenging the piece, the greater the reward when we are done. You did a masterful job on this piece.
Stunning! That was by far the most impressive transformation of restoration!!! That was a busload of hours scraping and sanding, but looks well worth it. I would like to see the other piece restored, I enjoy watching your work! ❤😊❤
What a marathon! It was like one of the labours of Hercules! Have you considered taking a busman’s holiday working on the Forth Bridge? Wonderful work, well done!
You deserve an applause for this restoration. It was such a glorious process. Omg the end result is spectacular. I appreciate your patience and attention to details. This is what you call a ‘preserving a History’. Well done Mate!
Wow! All that work, and definitely well worth it! Such a beautiful piece. You've restored it wonderfully! I'd like to see you restore the other piece of furniture. Looking forward to it. 🙂
What a workout that scraping was! Glad you were able to reveal that beauty! The paint, while unfortunate, probably helped keep such an old piece in decent condition though. The mirror will likely need re-silvering though.
I was watching camping videos when this popped up. Curiosity and fascinating what we find in the ads. Some have no idea what stuff like this. 😊❤ Great and long work.
That poor dresser desecrated by that ghastly paint. Good thing you found it. All that scraping out the grooves reminded me that I need to call my dentist. Interesting about the purple. That definitely was a win for the Eastlake dresser. Neat to see the old newspaper. Please do the other Eastlake piece, it has good lines.
Very Nice! That’s stain works great to bring out a nice color. Applause on the paint stripping. Personally, I think I’m done with major paint stripping jobs, after my last video. Took an entire week to remove paint from all the details. Keep up the good work!
Thank you! And yup the paint stripping process can take forever, always lots of stripping, scraping, scrubbing, and picking haha. You never know how long the paint removing is going to take, which makes for inconsistent video content uploads for me. I find the long projects can be mentally challenging too haha appreciate the comment!
OMG what a transformation from an ugly ducking to a beautiful swan your eye for detail is great well done I love to watch your videos thanks from Australia

Oh wow! This piece reminds me of one very similar I had in my bedroom in the 1970’s in Wales UK. Your renovation is beautiful as is the wood pattern! A lot of hard work but boy! I can see why it’s your favourite so far! These pieces are very few and far between in the UK now 😢
I would love to see a video where you restore the piece you cannibalized the handles from. They’re lovely. And a beautiful addition to the lovely Eastlake dresser.
This dresser is a master piece. Thank you so much for giving it the restoration it deserves. And for showing just how much work it takes to make it like that again. I have don't work on furniture and I so enjoyed watching your careful and detailed work.
Hi again! I literally gasped when I saw the AFTER! Stunningly beautiful!!! I can understand why people paint furniture. It's an easy fix. However, in this case, they totally ruined the piece with their horrible painting skills. I wish I had a fraction of the patience you show in each video with your paint removal techniques. I would have given up after a couple of hours and just threw a different coat of paint on it. LOL I hope, if you sell this piece and not keep it for yourself, that you use some of the profits to buy yourself one of those water cooler/heater thingys that you see in offices. You can buy the jugs for them at any supermarket. Always fresh water, and hot water for making a hot beverage of your choice. Our soup on those colder days. Either way, I truly enjoyed your restoration. It is now a work of ART!! Outstanding job, sir!!!!
Talk about bringing something back to glorious life ! Stunning piece ! Your attention to detail is incredible and the finish is perfect . Well done from the U.K. 🎉🎉🎉
