I love so much that the microphone pics up the desperate clenching and straining of the controller as they play through the stressful parts - Brings back that feeling of playing through a difficult game on the SNES with your childhood friends, and the stress and intensity when you made it far. It's a feeling modern games; full of autosaves, beginner gameplay mechanics, and unlimited internet walkthroughs, rarely reproduce.
That’s why I and so many other people love dark souls (and other from soft games like Sekiro and Bloodborne) because they actually capture those elements and that vibe, but with enough modern elements to be something new.
Hey James or Mike, how about you guys play "Masters of Darkness" on the Sega Master System. Its Sega's answer to Castlevania. It came out on the Game Gear also. I'd like to hear what you guys gotta say while playing it.
Kaiser Jose I also wanted them to play that game, but I've seen their collection list on their site and it seems that they don't have the game yet. At least, the Master System version. Seeing as both of them like Castlevania, they definitely should get their hands on that game.
It's worse in certain megaman games where you don't become invulnerable after killing the boss, but the game still freezes your inputs as soon as it dies forcing you to stand in the way of an oncoming attack and die to it.
esmooth919 As long as you aren't down a round, that usually leads to a sudden death round, or another chance. At least in your standard versus/arcade modes. It sucks to high heaven in survival mode runs though.
esmooth919 worst than that was when in the slow motion ending hit both are apparently KO but then your opponent had like zero energy left but stands up again.
Just happened to me the other day in Diablo 3. Worst part about it, they dropped a legendary, but I had to beat him again, and for some reason, all the loot was gone.
A true classic, a gem of the snes era. I remember getting this game for Christmas back in 1991. I consider this game to be a masterpiece in many more ways than one to a point where I and many others consider it legendary. One of the best games ever made, for sure. It blew my socks off -- fond memories and good times
Super Castlevania 4 has always been one of my favorite Castlevania games from the franchise! It's always fun to watch you two play games, and hang out.
I always love watching James and Mike play games because its great watching people genuinly enjoy playing a game and talking about it. Just beating a game and speaking about what they love. also the frustration at fighting a difficult boss.
Part one to me is the best, but only because it has heavy Nostalgia with it. I was around 5 and my father came home late from work, I was playing Super Mario Bros as it was the only game I had. He came into the room and surprised me and my brothers with 3 games, second hand of course, we weren't the richest family growing up. Along the games were ExciteBike, Thundercade, and Castlevania. I went ape shit like any 5 year old would and popped that sucker in and played for hours. I never got passed the 3rd stage until recently when I finally beat that game. I was never a fan of the RPG style castlevanias, CV4 is a damn good game and I enjoyed that one too. I'm still trying to get ahold of all the castlevanias I missed out on the N64 titles and SEGA titles.
Best game of all time for me. The feeling of fighting Dracula as the music swells and hits full blast at the end can’t be beaten.

I generally don't like "Let's Play" videos, but your series is really really fun to watch, two old pals talking about anything they like, playing video games is revive very good memories. This episode, I think, is my favorite until now, the nostalgia, the excitement and the joy of you two playing this game of your childhood and college years is pretty genuine. Thanks for this :)
Maybe the best more linear game of the series. The alternate levels and Maria are awesome and best OST of the whole series. The Adventure ReBirth is great too and I like metroidvanias as well.
Great video. Thanks for putting them up. One of the best SNeS games and the best castlevania game. I'm surprised you didn't comment at all on the music. The music in this game is beyond epic.
I love when that boss rush starts. i was genuinely rooting for you guys at that point. you guys almost gave me the same feeling i get when i beat a game. what a fantastic game... made for a great video.
U guys are the goats. Greatest of all time. I’ve been trying to get over a horrible break up and your videos are really helping me forget and heal. Thanks guys
Is it wrong that the end of this game kind of makes me want to cry? There's something about the ending, the music, and everything else - just a really powerful game.
I was born in 97, and I grew up on SNES, NES, and N64. I never beat any games (I was a dumb fuckin kid).. I went back last summer to beat this, my childhood favorite. IT WAS GLORIOUS.
Got this game for my 21st birthday a few months ago. My dad was gracious enough to buy it for me when we were at our local game store. Still one of the best games I have for the system. I got really good at it playing it on an emulator and I finally managed to beat it once I got it on the cartridge. It really helps when you're playing with an actual controller as opposed to a keyboard, as you can more easily activate the special weapons. The controls also seem more fluent on the SNES as well. It has great replay value as well, especially with the hard mode added at the end of the game. I'll keep playing this one until I stop breathing.
I'm gonna start calling you two the Cardiac Kids, because you find ways to make boss battles very close-- and very exciting to watch as a viewer. That final 1-2 combo of Death and Dracula will test the patience of a lot of players; I remember many attempts, staying up late at night, trying to take both down... until I figured out movement and attack patterns and learned to counterattack. I still struggle a bit with both bosses to this day, but years (and years) of experience do serve me well when I play through the game every year. I finish in one sitting, usually using a handful of continues along the way. Like James, I consider Super Castlevania IV to be the best of the series. Symphony of the Night is a close second. I spent TONS of time playing Super Castlevania IV just after release; I also taped the soundtrack to listen to in my car, thanks to having my SNES sound output through my stereo. There's just something about the direct approach that this game is, rather than the combination of genres that Symphony of the Night is. It's pure action, with little item management or character-building to interfere; not that either or both of these things is bad, but the lack of them here makes the game more pure, in my eyes. I'd love to see you take either of the PlayStation 2 Castlevanias for a spin, if only to see and hear what your responses might be. They are definitely flawed games, but I personally think both get a bit too much hate from the community at large. Looking forward to next week, guys; thanks for keeping these video coming. I really enjoy them.
Don't give them THAT much credit. They purposely make the battles look close that way just for entertainment. I'm sure they are better than what they portray on screen.
tymMKillBill Really? I don't think so, James said he would stop dying on purpose...But then again he said that for the NERD, not for Monday. Still, I think this is the real deal...
I found this channel a long time ago and skipped over it. Whyyy did I do that? This is art. Nostalgic, Hilarious, frustrating, thought provoking, 4-16 bit, you-tube art!! Mad props to you two for bravely going where a lot of us have been (but forgot about) before. This reminds me how amazingly easy gamer kids have it these days! SUBBED! thank you cinemassacre. :D
7:56, Realistically the worst thing to drown in would be sand. Imagine trying to breathe and just getting a mouth full and snorting sand until you asphyxiate. Wonderful!
I don't understand why some people would prefer no content on this channel rather than the videos Mike has been posting while James has been making a movie or just taking breaks. I find Mike and James hilarious together and hope they continue to put out videos together. Just my opinion though
The 4 castlevania reviews of the nerd are my favorite episodes. I watched them at least 15 times. They are so good because it is the nerd but playing games he actualy likes and enjoyes for the most part. I hope some day there are more episodes like this, actual nerd episodes where the nerd gives himselve a break and plays some good games. I think that could bread new life in the nerd and will let him evolve as a charecter. It's time for something like this. Anyway great episode!
I appreciate your old school approach. It reminds me of me and my friends sitting down after school playing SNES and N64, hanging out and talking about the stupidest things. 7:56
Haha congrats! you can tell how much James especially loves this game. He's grinning 100% of the time and offering incessant praise. Top 10 game for sure.
I may be a complete nut for this, but I always find the rattling and creaking of old school controllers a part of the nostalgic experience when playing retro games. I've always thought it would be a cool feature for re-releases of retro games or emulators to have an option to dub in the rattling and creaking sounds of the buttons when you press them to emulate the sound of the old controllers. Sorta like how some bands add vinyl crackle to their tracks nowadays because people miss the distinct sound I guess :P
Controllers still do this to this day, so what would be the point? You can even get custom old school gaming controllers made to play emulators and computer games to mimic the nostalgia.
I got the NES Action Set in 1989 at the age of 7. Maybe 2 days later, my uncle and aunt got my California Games. Maybe a month later, my mom got me Super Mario Bros. 3. Those 3 games were so awesome. Honestly, I only picked out 4 NES games myself out of the 18 I had from 1989-1992, Mega Man 2, Zelda I, Adventure Island II, and Bart Vs The Space Mutants. My mother picked out every other NES game for me and they were all awesome games. She really knew how to pick good games like: City Connection, Snake Rattle 'N Roll, Rad Racer II, Super Mario Bros. 2, Wrecking Crew, Rescue Rangers, Adventures in the Magic Kingdom, etc. Real classics.
You know things are serious when you are sitting up straight, eyes locked on the screen and feet planted firmly on the ground. "You'll pay for the whole seat, but you will only need the edge!"
I must say , your AVGN: Castlevania series review is for me the best videos I've ever seen. And defiantly your best AVGN episodes. I have seen them countless times and thanks to you James you got me into Castlevania and since I've collected some of the very best Castlevania games ever made thanks to your advice. Super Castlevania 4 was my favorite for a while but I've switched over to Rondo Of Blood , I think that game has the best music in the series on par with Symphony Of The Knight and it's classic Castlevania but with more fluid controls.
Dracula voice: "Velcome to ze castle! Vere we av all the turkey you could ever vant! Ah ah ah!!" Really entertaining playthrough. Thanks James and Mike!
Love this , guys..! I lost my shit when *Mike* called *James* mental for freaking out after beating a boss but then raged twice has hard at the end ..! haha I love it ..!
@@OcelotDAD , yes. SOTN becomes easier when using the Crissaegrim or Soul Steal or Shield Rod + Iron Shield. If I would play SOTN again, I would avoid the overpowered moves and try the different weapons and techniques instead.
I really don't understand why people here are hating on Symphony of the night. It quite literally is just as great as Super Castlevania 4 if anything. It literally is the next best thing that came out after 4. Even the art style is somewhat similar. I mean they even took slogra and gaibon sprites from 4. 4 took the standards of how the game should be and sotn expanded on it. I respect and love both
You guys really do remind me of my childhood, born in 75 i grew up with most of the firsts in video games at home. How amazing is it that you never really forget the strategies for beating end of level bosses. I was a SEGA guy myself and my best mate hade a SNES so we were always at war. He was always chattin shit about his Super FX and Mode 7. Till i got Moonwalker on then he shut up. Love the vids mate i constantly swear at my games too.
Scope-Eye video yeah i personally prefer Rondo of Blood, i don't know when it comes to classic Castlevanias i prefer the "clunky" controls because it makes the sub weapons much more useful, in Super Castlevania 4 if you master the whip you don't need any sub weapons
It's definitely the best. James is just viewing this one through nostalgia goggles. Castlevania 1 is also better. I'd say 3 and Bloodlines are even better. Having to swing like Indiana Jones in SC4 was the biggest flaw. There's a reason it never came back.
I guess I liked the NES ones bettter. Even if Castlevania II was cryptic as fuck that was a good game heh you guys made this a really fun video. Congrats Mike on the win!

Here's the Super Castlevania IV video from 1992! Playing Super Castlevania IV in 1992
sweeet! :D
Hey James or Mike, how about you guys play "Masters of Darkness" on the Sega Master System. Its Sega's answer to Castlevania. It came out on the Game Gear also. I'd like to hear what you guys gotta say while playing it.

Doesn't the same skeleton kill you at 7:20 in this video, 22 years later?
You guys should play Five Nights At Freddy's one day. I know it's isn't a retro game, but I think it would be funny to see you and Mike's reaction.
Beating a boss and dying at the same time, the worst feeling ever
It's worse in certain megaman games where you don't become invulnerable after killing the boss, but the game still freezes your inputs as soon as it dies forcing you to stand in the way of an oncoming attack and die to it.
Not as bad as a Double KO in any fighting game (particularly Street Fighter)
esmooth919 As long as you aren't down a round, that usually leads to a sudden death round, or another chance. At least in your standard versus/arcade modes. It sucks to high heaven in survival mode runs though.

Absofuckinloutly agree
Damn James, I can hear that SNES controller screaming in agony. Got a death grip on that thing.
I can hear cracking...cracking!

Super Castlevania 4 has always been one of my favorite Castlevania games from the franchise! It's always fun to watch you two play games, and hang out.
Mike is that guy who makes u feel good while ur having a bad run. These 2 together work on so many levels!
I always love watching James and Mike play games because its great watching people genuinly enjoy playing a game and talking about it. Just beating a game and speaking about what they love. also the frustration at fighting a difficult boss.

20:35 That's some real SNES concentration right there. You guys are awesome
Lol. My mother called it the "constipated look" and took many pains to stop me from playing when I got really quiet. It was highly annoying...:P
I still remember how epic it felt hearing Simon´s Theme when you were about to kill Dracula. Amazing!
Best game of all time for me. The feeling of fighting Dracula as the music swells and hits full blast at the end can’t be beaten.

You two are such a great duo, I just love watching you guys play these games from my childhood. Keep up the great work m80s
Rondo of Blood is definitely worth playing, it's one of the best in the series.
Maybe the best more linear game of the series. The alternate levels and Maria are awesome and best OST of the whole series. The Adventure ReBirth is great too and I like metroidvanias as well.
Upload dat 92 shit !
yeah, everyone, like this comment!
Yeyeyeyeye!
Great video. Thanks for putting them up. One of the best SNeS games and the best castlevania game. I'm surprised you didn't comment at all on the music. The music in this game is beyond epic.
your nerd video on castlevania is the reason i bought this game and it has since then became my favorite super nintendo game.
Love the frustration, as I can relate. I will say it was worth playing hooky from school to beat that 23 years ago.
1:51 "What you just walk over it? You can just WALK over it."
I got that reference. Well played! ^_^
I thought the exact same thing. I was sure James would say it, but he didn't
Ha! I wanted to quote that too and checked if someone else did. And you beat me to it. :D
I love when that boss rush starts. i was genuinely rooting for you guys at that point. you guys almost gave me the same feeling i get when i beat a game. what a fantastic game... made for a great video.
Man, these videos are so good at taking me back. Dem feelz
I love the genuine rage of a geek. It's so unlike the Aaaaaaaaaaaah from a lot of youtubers now a days.
Adam Sams a lot of those UA-camrs we see are connected through corporations to capitalize on revenue
omg i love the soundtrack so much !!!!
still and always forever be in my heart...... my favorite castlevania game
U guys are the goats. Greatest of all time. I’ve been trying to get over a horrible break up and your videos are really helping me forget and heal. Thanks guys
That part when Mike finishes Dracula off then shouts is so priceless!! Lol XD

Agreed
I'm happy I finally gave your channel a shot guys. It's amusing watching you go through the golden oldies together.
7:56, Realistically the worst thing to drown in would be sand.
Imagine trying to breathe and just getting a mouth full and snorting sand until you asphyxiate.
Wonderful!
Would be worse if it was diarrhea smelling and tasting sand.
Pepe Silva I agree with the diarrhea drowning, choking with a terrible smell, way more awful.
Drowning? Looks up Saw 3 pig vat scene. Enough said.
Now replace sand with powder juice.
I can think of worse, but won't say. disgusting.
Thanks guys. This reminds me of the good old days when I used to have friends.
I want the 1992 review on the channel!
same
Me too
***** James made a video review of the game in 1992
Me too!
Bring the '92 review!
The music of this game is genius!!!
Some of the best music in a video game, period. Ah, memories.
The new Castlevania collection has this classic available to play!
I don't understand why some people would prefer no content on this channel rather than the videos Mike has been posting while James has been making a movie or just taking breaks. I find Mike and James hilarious together and hope they continue to put out videos together. Just my opinion though
John Smith
They both definitely make the video better.
Finally, PART 2 !!!!
(which was recorded about 2weeks ago and split into 2 videos)
Of course we wanna see that 1992 review :D
This right here brings me back to the days. Just you and your friend, on the adventure of a life time.
The 4 castlevania reviews of the nerd are my favorite episodes. I watched them at least 15 times. They are so good because it is the nerd but playing games he actualy likes and enjoyes for the most part. Anyway great episode!
I love how you flail your whip in the dead bosses face. I LOVED DOING THAT.
The graphics of this game still look good.
I watched your original play through in 1992 and then watched this. You haven't changed a bit James! Keep on rocking!
I appreciate your old school approach. It reminds me of me and my friends sitting down after school playing SNES and N64, hanging out and talking about the stupidest things. 7:56
young avgn videos? sign me up!
Haha congrats! you can tell how much James especially loves this game. He's grinning 100% of the time and offering incessant praise. Top 10 game for sure.
It's Thanksgiving in Dracula's castle?!
This came out yesterday... which was Thanksgiving in Canada... thus it's been confirmed, Dracula's Canadian.
I love you guys! love all your old videos! been watching them since i was like 13. now im 18. it was awesome to watch the nerds grow with me!
That final boss fight was intense!
It's amazing how much I enjoy watching you guys playing. Great video!
Please, upload James review as a teen!
You know things are serious when you are sitting up straight, eyes locked on the screen and feet planted firmly on the ground.
"You'll pay for the whole seat, but you will only need the edge!"
Nice job guys! I remember playing this game as a kid in the 90's. Great game!!
I never realized how loud those old-school controllers were.
This, Super Mario world, SFII, MK, and Starfox were my favorite games on SNES.
goddamn the music in the treasurelevel is so good
Still to this day, this is a great game. Great playthrough, guys.
My favorite parts are when James pauses the game to go on a mini rant. Every time I hear the pause chime I just start laughing.
I remember raging like that too in those games, back then things were just so much tougher, games today are way more forgiving.
mike: " you're fucking mental" referring to james
mike: 21:00....
I must say , your AVGN: Castlevania series review is for me the best videos I've ever seen. And defiantly your best AVGN episodes. I have seen them countless times and thanks to you James you got me into Castlevania and since I've collected some of the very best Castlevania games ever made thanks to your advice. Super Castlevania 4 was my favorite for a while but I've switched over to Rondo Of Blood , I think that game has the best music in the series on par with Symphony Of The Knight and it's classic Castlevania but with more fluid controls.
shadowshinobi06
You can't dis Rondo's music at all. It's a perfect soundtrack.
shadowshinobi06
Okay that's your opinion.
The Grim Reaper is where I gave up as a kid, and to this day I still have problems.
indeed the best castlevania game ever
When you hear that iconic music at 20:36 ,you just know that shit just got reals, huh??Haha!!
+Sammy Lane exactly!
This (and Godzilla 2014) is literally the only thing ever that made me sit on the edge of my seat.
Dracula voice: "Velcome to ze castle! Vere we av all the turkey you could ever vant! Ah ah ah!!"
Really entertaining playthrough. Thanks James and Mike!
Brings me back to the old days
Love this , guys..!
I lost my shit when *Mike* called *James* mental for freaking out after beating a boss but then raged twice has hard at the end ..!
haha I love it ..!
When a game evokes these kind of emotions on the last boss, u just know it's lightning in a bottle, a timeless gem.
When it comes to Castlevania, I still have my finger on Symphony of the night.
Yeah, I love it too. But when it comes to castlevania before the whole RPG infusion, this one is indeed my favorite as well.
SotN is an amazing game, but a little bit too easy IMO. Aria/Dawn of Sorrow are the best RPG Castlevanias IMO and this one is the best overrall.
@@OcelotDAD , yes. SOTN becomes easier when using the Crissaegrim or Soul Steal or Shield Rod + Iron Shield. If I would play SOTN again, I would avoid the overpowered moves and try the different weapons and techniques instead.
This was one of the best J&M Mondays.
James beat 3 gold bats with half life. Half-Life 3: Confirmed
Dumb
2020
Just what's with that game and people dying for a sequel though
Man, loved this episode! I felt the triumph so hard. :) Also, would love to see that old video on the channel. :)
it truly is the best Castlevania game.
Incessant Wake fuck symphony of the night, castlevania 4 is the shit
I really don't understand why people here are hating on Symphony of the night. It quite literally is just as great as Super Castlevania 4 if anything. It literally is the next best thing that came out after 4. Even the art style is somewhat similar. I mean they even took slogra and gaibon sprites from 4. 4 took the standards of how the game should be and sotn expanded on it. I respect and love both
Blakkheim not everyone loves Metroid or metroidvania
So damn awesome the part with Dracula where the level one organ music starts up !!
I think Mike has more anger than the AVGN
lol
You guys really do remind me of my childhood, born in 75 i grew up with most of the firsts in video games at home. How amazing is it that you never really forget the strategies for beating end of level bosses. I was a SEGA guy myself and my best mate hade a SNES so we were always at war. He was always chattin shit about his Super FX and Mode 7. Till i got Moonwalker on then he shut up. Love the vids mate i constantly swear at my games too.
best. game. ever.
I love the frantic whip-flailing after the boss battles, lol.
We want that 1992 review!
One of my favorite Castlevanias. I love the 16-bit era.
Awesome u defeated Dracula at the end !!!
:-)
I love watching mike lose/die. He literally looks like he wants to cry. So awesome
I want to see this 1992 Game Review by James.
Yes Mike, I want to see James as a kid playing SCV4.
Definitely the best Castlevania in my opinion.....
Rondo of Blood may beat it IMO. Symphony of the Night is a contender as well.
Scope-Eye video yeah i personally prefer Rondo of Blood, i don't know when it comes to classic Castlevanias i prefer the "clunky" controls because it makes the sub weapons much more useful, in Super Castlevania 4 if you master the whip you don't need any sub weapons
Scope-Eye video
Depends if you like the more RPGish ones vs. the classic ones like this. This is definitely the best of the classic style ones.
This is my favorite also.
In regards to atmosphere I agree, but for gameplay I've always like CV3 the best of the original sidescrolling games.
Ive never played this game but it looks EXTREMELY well put together. Wayyyy better than the games now adays.
Any fan of ORDER OF ECCLESIA?
The music in this game is amazing. So moody and eerie.
SotN has my vote for best. Love that damn game :)
It's definitely the best. James is just viewing this one through nostalgia goggles. Castlevania 1 is also better. I'd say 3 and Bloodlines are even better. Having to swing like Indiana Jones in SC4 was the biggest flaw. There's a reason it never came back.
Guys, do more of these gameplays. It's so freakin awesome!
I guess I liked the NES ones bettter. Even if Castlevania II was cryptic as fuck that was a good game heh you guys made this a really fun video. Congrats Mike on the win!
"I thought it was going to be He-Man"...Great Ghostbusters 2 reference!
Well Mike has Beatin Mike Tyson in Punch-Out Now he beats Dracula in Super Castlevania IV! You are a Powerful Gamer Mike.
The Force is strong with this one.
