This video takes me back to the late 1980s & early 1990s, when I'd sit with a friend and we'd take turns playing games that we rented for the weekend. One of us would play while the other would be supportive... maybe by referencing an open copy of Nintendo Power (for maps & strategies) or just by giving advice based on experience or what was seen on the screen. It was like having a navigator to help guide you along the way... and, at least in my case, you both felt pretty accomplished when seeing that ending or those closing credits. Can't wait for Part 2.
I'd like to see a video of them playing like kids did back then, bickering over how long each other have been playing. James saying 'You got two turns!' and Mike replies 'But the first one didn't count it was too short'
or you'd take turns/shifts while the other slept even... I've had sessions like that for really hard games & for leveling up in RPG's. Yup... nothin like the old school. It gave you a sense of accomplishment to see those shitty endings, often just a screen saying "congrats" or something, ripe with typos.
Animation parts: 19:35 "Oh my goddd. That was the biggest fuck up I've ever seen. >joker laugh" 19:52 Masters of the Universe toy analysis 23:42 Adam West scraping his asshole across the floor? 24:42 Terminator 25:00 What's up there? 25:32 Run and jump over him. OHHHHH JUMP! AAAHHHHHHH! NYAH! I'M BATMAN! I'M BATMAAAAAANNNNN! 25:50 I thought it was over. I thought it was over I DIDN'T KNOW THERE WAS A BOSSSSSS!
I really appreciate mike got the image of google and showed us the name of the enemy out of the instruction manual little things like that really make the video better in my opinion!
Just came back to see that James was asking for a “new take” on riddler. I think the Batman did that quite well. Funny to see. Maybe Matt reeves is watching lol
One if the best James and mike Mondays so far, I reckon. I think it's because it's a difficult but good game they're playing. Plus anything batman is usually cool.
"I beat the Joker... I did it one time!" That took me right back to kindergarden and kids talking about how they've beaten the last boss, but they only did it once, because it's so super hard, but they definitely did it. I don't care if Mike has beaten him, probably did, but that sentence took me back xD
All the Batman NES games are good in their own right, though the self titled one is easily the best. From the graphics which genuinely are still even today some of the best on the system, the music (Sunsoft always rocked in this department on NES) to the level design etc.
Yup. This is my favourite James and Mike Monday hands down. I still own this game and love it. I've had it since 1990 I think. I have beaten it once, but not sure how I would do now. Anyways, the last few min of this vid is hilarious. 24:42 to the end of the vid had me on the floor. 'Rinse and repeat'. Hahaha. "just fuck em up'. and he does it with 2 life... Best James and Mike Monday ever. Cheers.
I love what you guys are doing, I love the nostalgia. You guys make the same jokes we were making back then. It's what I look forward to on Mondays. It's on my bucket list to get a Simons Quest cartridge signed by you two.
The term "Rest" instead of lives in games is a way of avoiding stating that a character dies. You see it most often in games aimed at kids where the developer wants to avoid the concept of characters dying, or in licensed games when the owner of the character won't allow the character to literally die in the game. The way they get around it is to refer to the character's life meter as "power" instead, and when the character runs out of power, they have to rest, instead of having them run out of life and die. For example, Mario never "dies", he just gets knocked out, it's just a kinder way of handling failure.
Yeah, like growing up you find all the "official" terms for videogames stuff, but back then everybody used to make up names. Like I used to call bosses "end monster", or my uncle called levels "walls" and stuff like that.
KombatGod I couldn't agree more. The NES and Super Mario Bros. came out when I was in 1st grade. When I would describe it at school I never used the right terms. I remember actually saying, "well in Super Mario Bros. you just go across the screen and you jump on boards and bricks and stuff..." I never even knew about such fancy words like Platformer , Side Scroller, etc.
It made me think back of all the random things I called stuff. Even my mom while playing Mario Bros on the NES had different names for things. Damn the instructions! lol
***** Yeah, farming is a newer term. I think it came around when MMO games got more popular and stuff. I'm sure it might have been around before that, but that's what I think of most when I hear "farming". MMOs and RPGs. And lately I think Borderlands also.
Definitely the best James and Mike Mondays episode I've ever watched. So funny and so intense at the same time. Loved hearing your thoughts on the Batman movies in general as well. Keep up the good work guys. Can't wait for part 2!
This is an old video but I have to say: You guys are awesome! I don't know how many times I've laughed with you and really enjoyed listening to your conversations while gaming. Keep it up guys!
This is one of best games I ever played when I was a kid. Got it for christmas and I played the hell out if it. I even won a bet with my uncle who could beat the last boss. I managed to beat him and it net me 5 bucks. It was one of those moments when your heart stops and you feel like you became the world champion in your living room. Thanks for the vids guys.
"Back in my day I called it filling my shit up." Mike said it perfectly. The term 'farming' didn't exist in my childhood either. This was a great episode, definitely one of the best.
I think "REST" is probably an abbreviation of "restore" or "restart". If it's 0 then you have no "restorations" or "restarts" left. I agree that it's not intuitive.
I'm sure a thousand people already mentioned this, but in level two you can punch those things that fall from the ceiling to farm health and weapon energy. You just stand on the very edge of the platform and punch the claw things as they fall. There are actually "farming" locations that you've missed in several games you've featured. I freaking love this game though, it really held up well over the years and it probably is the single best movie-based video game ever made.
This one started out with, like, no enthusiasm, and then turned into one of the most entertaining James & Mike Mondays that I've seen. I love these guys.
I bought this game when it came out. I always felt like it had such a unique style that they had to have been coding a ninja game and just tacked Batman in there last minute. It looks like Sunsoft also may have used a modified Journey To Silius engine for this game, as well.
I frickin' love Sunsoft. They are the true masters of using the NES sound chip in creative ways, to make some awesome tunes. Not to mention, they made some damn good games too! Batman, Batman ROTJ (sure, it's flawed in its insane difficulty, but it's such a wicked impressive game both sound- and graphic wise, you almost can't believe it's on the NES), Ufouria, Blaster Master, Journey to Silius, and probably dozens of other impressive games that I've never had the chance to try. I wanna try Sunman, which would be quite the gem to play legit :)
I played this game so much as a kid that I had it down to a science. As long as you are dealing damage to an enemy and they are blinking, they can't harm you. So you can jump into enemies at an angle while punching and be standing on them while punching them to death. If you punch fast enough it also slows their animation down allowing for extra hits and more damage dealt. It's how you beat The Joker. Just jump into him, kneel down and keep punching until he runs to the other side and quickly follow him and jump punch into him again. As long as you land on the right spot, just like with the second boss, his shots will go over you so won't have to ever deal with them. I think it's something like 100 punches to take him out. I would race through this game while listening to the 1989 Batman soundtrack by Prince. Those were the days!
Lol at 1824 that sinister chuckle. I love these vids because you can tell you guys have been playing games for years together. Keep up the great content because I always look forward to these vids on Mondays!
I know it's probably not what you had in mind, but the animated movie "Sub-Zero" was actually quite good IMO. (I didn't expect it would be - name sounds like an ill-conceived attempt to leech off Mortal Kombat's popularity, and I think it was direct-to-video which is often a bad sign... But I was actually quite pleased with it.) The animated series practically *invented* the concept of Mr. Freeze "done right", after all... Before that he was pretty much just "bad guy with a freeze ray"
Try the Arkham City game. I know it's silly to compare movies and games, but fuck it, Arkham City has treated Mr. Freeze better than any movie will EVER treat him.
don't put words in my mouth, I didn't say there aren't any good games today, I was just saying that the kind of adrenaline rush you get from games like this can't be found in games today.
guys, I gotta say.. this is the most fun I've had watching in a long time xD Mike's reactions to jumping up with "the green guys" and the "chimney things" lmao... And like James said, "my wife is upstairs, prolly wondering wtf" lol.. oh man, you guys GOTTA do more of these vids. good, but hard games :P
Jacob364 No he's not like Sonic, where his games got worse over time. Megaman's games are pretty much good all around, as far as I see it, they just stopped making games for him for some reason.
Dr. Octo I never liked the games personally. They mustve stopped because it wasn't doing good enough or they cant do anything more with him. Isnt there like 20 of em?
Dr. Octo If you include Classic Megaman, Megaman X, Megaman Legends, Megaman Battle Network, and Megaman Starforce ALL being separate franchises with games to represent them, the number skyrockets over 20.
Those bomb dropping things in the ceiling have a trick to them: The bombs can be destroyed with a single punch, but it's safest to hit them while they're still falling down so that they don't zoom into you, so get close to where they drop and punch away. Once you've destroyed three of them without collecting the powerups they drop, NO MORE will drop down until you collect the powerups, and even once you do there's a delay before more will drop, so just grab the powerups that were dropped and run like Hell! :B Also, the batterangs do damage based on the amount of time they stay in contact with the enemy, so hitting an enemy at the edge of a batterang's range will cause the most amount of damage.
None of my friends game...well play good games. I got one friend who is into Assassin's Creed games and Minecraft. Not bashing on them, just eh I wish I had a friend like Mike or James.
This is sort of like Sunsoft's version of "Ninja Gaiden". It's tough, it's got the wall jumping, re-spawning enemies, infinite continues, cinematic feel, etc. I never got very far when I rented this as a kid. I played it again the other night on an emulator, and I made it to level 5-1 before giving up. It really is a great action game. The challenge factor is high, but not impossible. It feels so good when you finally make it past a difficult area.
Oh man at the end when Mike was just running/jumping past those green guys and those green ceiling fucker things! I was seriously waving my arms and yelling at my screen for him to keep going! Holy cow that was fun to watch.

Once you've destroyed three of them without collecting the powerups they drop, NO MORE will drop down until you collect the powerups, and even once you do there's a delay before more will drop, so just grab the powerups that were dropped and run like Hell! :B
Also, the batterangs do damage based on the amount of time they stay in contact with the enemy, so hitting an enemy at the edge of a batterang's range will cause the most amount of damage.
None of my friends game...well play good games. I got one friend who is into Assassin's Creed games and Minecraft. Not bashing on them, just eh I wish I had a friend like Mike or James.
Same here, man.
Me neither Matt. My friends play sports games. Doesn't anyone want gameplay or at least a good story?
Um those are much better than NES games. Minecraft is a whole virtual world and Assassins Creed is an awesome stealth game
I like how Mike Matei tap into his Joker laughter 🤙

Go fuck em up, go fuck em up!
I'm gonna fuck em up!
lol....Part 2: Bootsy comes in and beats the game.
I loved this one. My favorite James & Mikes Mondays.
gran juego de la epoca, muchas horas estube jugando con el jeje
This is sort of like Sunsoft's version of "Ninja Gaiden". It's tough, it's got the wall jumping, re-spawning enemies, infinite continues, cinematic feel, etc.
I never got very far when I rented this as a kid. I played it again the other night on an emulator, and I made it to level 5-1 before giving up. It really is a great action game. The challenge factor is high, but not impossible. It feels so good when you finally make it past a difficult area.
18:29 "Shh shhh I gota do this." "Er.. Eat it! I'm Batman bitch!..EM.." LMAO XD So funny you two. Great times! Thanks.
This is what it's all about. Sitting back, playing the games you grew up with as a kid with your best friend.
This fucking game... Is fucking awesome.
Oh man at the end when Mike was just running/jumping past those green guys and those green ceiling fucker things! I was seriously waving my arms and yelling at my screen for him to keep going! Holy cow that was fun to watch.
