A friend of mine is very insistent on using pennies rather than washers because they're cheaper

Brilliant. I've been honestly thinking about these. You have given me the ideas and inspiration I need to build something like this.

I think so too! They got some good responses in the table as well.

Thanks! I use them to indicate trees too. Until I make some trees at least.

Nice job on the builds man. looking great. For cheap, maybe even free, metal rods. Find a metal/machine shop near you, go and ask for the metal they throw away to recycle. If they're cool, like in the shop I work at. They'll give it to you for free. We throw away tons of 2 or 3 feet rods. (left overs from jobs) And If they want you to pay, It should be ridiculously low.( Because at this length it's almost worthless) mention "from the recycling bin" You'll be set for life :)

Regarding the weights the BEST thing I found is mixing iron fillings in spackle or this stuff Durham rock putty. I will do this in the bottom of my minis sometimes as well. A little goes a long way. You can get bottles of iron filings on Amzn.

What's nice about rocks/stalag t/m ites is that you don't need to find the center of them for them to look great!

Fishing weights might work and come in different sizes.

Yeah I looked into those. Pine derby car weights too. A lot of options and fish weights is definitely on the list.

I put finishing nails in the bottom of my builds to give them weight. Dirt cheap and easy. Just shove ‘em in there.

Yeah I tried using screws and nails but haven’t found any that have the proper heft I’m looking for. Honestly though, it will probably be the way I go because cutting the rod is kind of extreme.

I usually put in a dozen or so. I've also used pennies and steel washers, depending on the build.
