"When the 'mites go up, the 'tites go down". Old quote that helped me remember which was which. Also "Mites in the mud, 'tites on top".
Very good!
Man these aren't scatter terrain, this is set dressing! You have firmly built and put theatre of the mind on a brilliant stage! 🤘
Thank you!! These will definitely boost the feeling of realism at the table. Wait till next week!!
Stalactites are stuck “tight” to the ceiling of the cave; stalagmites are “mighty” rising up from the cave floor, IIRC. In a pinch, the tine from a clear plastic fork or a section of clear plastic swizzle stick can stand in for a flight peg. Great video!
Great tip, thanks for sharing!
I was taught:
StalaCtites = Ceiling
StalaGmites = Ground
I remember it being stalactites have to hold "tight" so you don't fall from the ceiling.
Stalagmites "might" someday reach the ceiling
Stalactites hold tight to the ceiling, stalagmites might reach them.
ahhh, cool. Thanks Matthew.
I like tights fall down mites dig up?
That’s EXACTLY how I remember it!
Haha I thought I invented that memory click as a child. Oh well, every day there’s something that reminds me I wasn’t a prodigy. 😿😺
Titties hang, so do tites. (So mites stand on floor). That's how we do it in Belgium 😉
StalagMites look like "M"s on the ground... and stalacTites look like "T"s hanging down from the ceiling.
LOL!!! I save my scraps in bags too!!!! 👍
Great builds!!!!
Cool way to remember that Mark! I'm going to relay that one to my kids :) Thanks, and don't let those bags get out of control haha.
@@TabletopWitchCRAFT For kids (another way) is someday... Stalagmites will "grow up' to be stalactites someday.
Or, if you're saucy, it's easy to remember because.... 'tites come down ;)
@@figrollin Not kid-friendly or appropriate, but ok.
rubble pile techniques will also translate great to the "trash pile" i'm planning for my goblin caverns!
Definitely!
think of girls and skirts when you're thinking of the cone shaped stalagmites and tights, how I remember is when the mites go up the tights come down.
Another cool tutorial! A friend of mine had mentioned that stalactites hang from the ceiling of the cave and that stalagmites might actually reach the ceiling one day. That was how he said it was easy to remember..
That's a good one :)
Stalactites form from the ceiling from water and minerals that collect and harden as they drip down from the ceiling and that drip also, usually creates a stalagmite directly below, depending on the geography of that surface. A more angled surface or water can change if a stalagmite forms, but when a stalagmite forms, it grows upward, as the stalactite grows downward like an icicle, until they grow together, then they are no longer, stalactite and stalagmite, but have become a column. The underground can be quite fascinating with the way cold stone can move, flow, and form from the constant forces of water, gravity, pressure, and natural land mass movements.
Excellent, thanks for the lesson!
Love the effect of the flight peg!!!! I keep old plexus glass welders mask inserts to do much of my transparency work. I cut them on the bandsaw to size. Again VERY COOL!!!!!!
Awesome. Love making use of random stuff in builds. Clever.
Stalacites come from the op and Stalamites come from the round.
Very nice.
Perfectly simple; the mites go up, and the tights come down. 😉
Thank you Evan 👍
I like your first one better. Looks more realistic. The second one would look more in place with snow/winter scene with the snow in between/around the boulders. Thanks for sharing:)
When the mites go up, the tights come down.
That’s it!
In Swedish we know this easily because stalagmites are on the ground (marken in Swedish, "mites" starts with the same letter) and stalactites hang from the ceiling (taket in Swedish which, you guessed it, starts with the same letter as "tites"). Basically the same can be used in English stalaCtites (ceiling), stalaGmites (ground).
Very cool!! Thank you for sharing :)
Great video John! Love the little dead dude detail... can I investigate the body ? lol
Give ma a roll :)
StalaGmites are on the Ground. StalCtites are on the Cieling. Thanks for the content!
That's it.
StalaGmites on the Ground, stalaCtites on the Ceiling. Science! :D
Gotta love science. Thanks
My go-to remember rule is "hold on tight to the stalactites or you might hit the stalagmites"
As a child my mom taught me how she reminds herself which is which, but that only works if you speak Swedish. Stalagmites are on the floor because that is "Golv", while stalactites are on the roof which is "taK".
Thanks for sharing :)
Love it! The water monster needs a coat of gloss varnish though, to show that it’s wet from just coming out of the water. 😊
I'm going to do that right now........... Ok I just did it, thanks :)
Those boulder stacks are fantastically made. I’ll have to make some myself. So beautiful yet so simple. Great video man!
Thank you Matt. Yes, simple, colorful, exciting with some small details. I like this easy build too.
I would use them as rocky/difficult terrain on the surface as well
John, I love your videos! You are so creative and resourceful. I don’t know if you will see this, but just want to make sure you are aware that there can be serious side effects to using resin/epoxy without the proper safety precautions. It’s recommended to use a respirator, gloves, safety goggles, and have a well ventilated work area. It’s worth researching when you get the chance. I would hate to see someone with your talent harmed. Happy crafting!
Hi Sarah, thanks for looking out for me and the community. I appreciate that! Not sure if you have Instagram, but if you follow me on there, you'll se a huge exhaust fan I just installed in my studio this past weekend :)
I do know which is the stalagmite and which is the stalactite. Stalactites form from mineral laden water dripping from the cave ceiling for millennia. Stalagmites are formed underneath stalactites because they are where the drips land. Which leads me to my only complaint about a wonderful video: when placing the stalactites on the flight stands, they ought to have been posed such that the pointy-down parts are pointing at the pointy-up parts. I'll definitely be making my own set of these!
Thanks for the info! Well let’s just say that some of the stalactites fell, and some stalagmites haven’t formed yet :).
What a really GREAT vid!
Mites climb up and tights come down...that is how the Geology Class taught it.
I us bits of sprue from 'glass or window" pieces that I collect as scrap from making 1:25 scale automobile models - just another hobby I seem to have acquired
World's greatest hobby tools - Mod Podge and Sculptamold.
Thank you Frank :) I agree, those are pretty priceless tools.
I thought that was a great idea supporting the stalactite with the flight stand plastic stem, really helps sell the illusion...great job, and thanks for sharing it with us
You got it DraklithsDen. Thanks for watching.
Niiice! and in french we say as a mnemonic way "les stalacMites Montent et les stalacTites Tombent" :) . Nice work as always!
Thank you :)
Another great video! I like the many options you offer in these videos. Oh and the scrap bag grows more and more as we build! One could incorporate your acid trap into the cave floor too.
Thank you! The bags are forever expanding haha. Yes, the acid trap would go great here.
That was amazing - so many techniques, materials, tips and techniques in one small little video! I am going to reference this vid to many of the newbies (and old timers!) in the craft. Thank you.
Thank you so much for your support and help spreading the word about the channel Kat !!
Mate! That was mint! The boulder terrain would be perfect for my wargaming terrain.....so simple to make as well! Thanks for sharing yet another completely awesome vid!
You got it Andy! Glad they’ll work for your table.
You just keep rolling out the hits with this build. Love your monster in the pool best of all.
Thank you Eric 🙏
Was curious if you would be interested in doing some lava tiles, huge fan of your crafting it is in a league of its own.
Thank you Corey 👍. I do have it on my list. I’m sure I’ll make a series out of it at some point.
Loving this cave series John. The stalagmites with floating stalactites were awesome. What’s next in the series...maybe a giant cave monster sculpt, using combined materials: green stuff, copper wire, foam, sculpt a mold and resin. Doesn’t matter what it is, I’ll be excited to check it out!
Thank you Collin. It was cool to leak a bit of the series on your show. That's a cool idea. If it doesn't make it in the first 4 videos, it will most likely be added down the road!
Your videos are great dude. I'm going to bed, but TOTALLY want to stay up and do crafting!
Thanks Barney ! I know that feeling too.
These are great! You're quickly selling me on those pigments.
You know I'm a fan :)
for stalagmites, I like to think of the word 'mite' being a creature that crawls in the ground.
While with stalagtite would have to be the opposite.
Very cool, I haven’t heard this one!
Stalegtight hangs on tight from above and stale might grows up mighty from the ground I was told at school, along time ago, wasn't easy scratching all that on a piece of slate :-)
oh boy, showing our age ;) Thanks Travelor in time !
This is an awsome series man. Cant wait to start making it myself 👍👍 these are going to be cool in our d&d sessions
Right on!! Enjoy. 2 more videos to come in the series. I’ll add more down the road.
Very easy yet very cool and durable
Thank you
Love these! Putting the Tabletop Witch Craft spin on classic terrain pieces. Amazing work and looks better than Dwarven Forge😊
Thank you :) That's a really nice compliment.
Your build are always amazing! You're way more talented than alot of other crafters.
Thank you J Hall 🙏
Another enjoyable video. Great stuff. Here's an easy way to remember stalagtites and stalagmites: the stalagtites hold TIGHT to the ceiling so they don't fall! :D Eh? Eh? Someone told me that as a kid, and I've never forgotten. I really like the critter in the pool - those ripples are awesome. And I agree with you about the black wash: I definitely don't overuse it, and as a result my dungeon tiles are probably a little brighter than most. But each to their own of course! Thanks for another fun and inspiring video!
You got it Perry, thank you for your feedback. Who’s to say how dark your tiles should be!
Stalagtights hold on tight to the ceiling and stalagmites mightily hold up the ceiling. From Highschool, Freshmen class geology class 47 years ago.
Awesome!!
I especially like how the rubble pile turned out.
Thank you Art... me too.
Easy way to remember stalactites vs. stalagmites: the "-c-" in "stalactite" stands for "ceiling," while the "-g-" in "stalagmite" stands for "ground."
Great one!
Amazing builds. Really spices things up.
Thank you :)
I love the little monster!
Thank you.
when the tights go down the mites set up.
Another great video with lots of fun ideas. Thank you so much!
-"Un altre excel·lent video amb moltes idees divertides. Moltes gràcies!"
You got it David. Thanks again for watching!
Stalactites, tight come down ,Stalagmites look up the tights😂😂
Good one haha
Stalagmites might get in your way as you are walking and you hope stalactites hold tight to the top of the cave so they don’t fall on your head.
Good one.
Tights hang down and Stalags Mite :)
You got it.
These look great.
Thank you :)
Next week’s video7 hot lava flow?. Tree roots coming through the ceiling to a pool in the floor? A roost of bats hanging from the ceiling
Very cool ideas... thanks.
My dad always told us that Stalagmites might reach the ceiling and stalactites have to hang on tight
He was right :)
Ever thought about doing a DM Screen?
I'd love to see you make one :)
Keep up the great work!
Will do! I have thought about it. I might have to add that to my list of builds.
@@TabletopWitchCRAFT that's something to look forward to then :)
Stalactites hold tight to the ceiling, stalagmites might reach the ceiling some day.
That’s is.
stalagmites might reach the sky while stalagtites
hand on tight from the rood
Good one.
You only need to remember that Stalactites have a T for top. If you remember that then logic dictates that the stalagmites are at the bottom.
Nice Tim, thanks.
man, this stuff is awesome great videos, amazing!!!!
Thank you 🙏
More Underdark and cave terrain please!
On its way :)
@@TabletopWitchCRAFT I'm close to the 30th game for my Out of the Abyss Campaign :D I already made some terrain for our games and I want to create MOOORE
@@MFewwy It’s a good addiction :)
random thought i was looking at your merch, it would be totally cool to put the viper on a knit hat i would totally buy a hat
Perfect time of year for that. Keep an eye out for that in the next week or so. Takes a few days for UA-cam to upload items. 🤘
Stalagmites might grow from the ground. Stalatite tight to the ceiling.
That’s it.
Stalactites hold tight to the ceiling and stalagmites may grow up to the ceiling
You got it!
I always remember the difference as : Stalactite has a c in it, c for ceiling...hangs from the ceiling. Stalagmite has a g, g for ground, grows up from the ground.
Yep a good one.
As to the Salagmites, the word for „crap“ in my language starts with a G, as in stalaGmite. My middle school science teacher told us that veeery confidentially ;D
Lol
Stalactites goes down because you wanna pull tights down.
Not exactly PC but how I learned it
haha good one.
Just some constructive criticism, I think you should have done the stalagmites and stalagtites to look similar to the walls. They form IRL by minerals being deposited onto it layer by layer. Black Magic Craft did underdark terrain recently and I think something like that would have looked better.
Again, this is just my subjective opinion. I do love your work and always get ideas from your techniques. Sadly, I dont have a work space currently to make stuff like this.
I’m not sure the stalagmites and stalactites would form with strata layers like cave walls would. Subject to different forces and criteria acting on them to form their shape.
There had better be some epic games played once this current plague passes, with all of the amazing crafting folks are doing. For the 'Tite Mite' game - T's look like something hanging from a roof.
Next video? It's obviously going to be - amazing!
I want to pull a 24 hour session! The next video is really cool. Had family over the other day and they all loved it!
@@TabletopWitchCRAFT Hope you all had a wonderful time and over indulged!
Easy to remember : Stalagmites G for ground Stalactites C for Ceiling.
Perfect.
Hey nice nice tuto.
What is the name of the song in background please ? It's totally epic !
Thank you. Song: "Adventure Awaits" by Dream Cave
@@TabletopWitchCRAFT thx a lot
Are those the 25% sharper black Olfa blades?! ⚔️ ⚔️
The regular ones only because the sharper ones were out of stock.
TIGHTS COME DOWN & MITES CRAWL UP.
Simple and easy one. Nice.
Stalactites hang tight to the ceiling, stalagmites might reach the ceiling :)
Good one!
Stalactites hold tight to the ceiling, Stalagmites sit on the floor.
Nice
StalaGmites on the ground. StalaCtites on the ceiling.
Nice.
I love all of this, especially the 50 ways to remember the difference between the two rock formations in the comments, lol.
Haha, me too
Stala-g-mite: The g stands for 'ground'.
Stala-c-tite: The c stands for 'ceiling'.
Perfect. Thanks.
How would you go about turning those cave tiles into a mine?
You can achieve a lot with different scatter terrain designed for a mine.... good idea ;)
StalaGmites are on the Ground, stalaCtights are on the Ceiling.
Good one!
Stala(c)tites (c)ling (tite)ly to the (c)eiling.
Stala(g)mites (g)row on the (g)round and you (mite) trip over them.
Good one.
Stalagmites point upward; stalactites point downward.
That's it Harriet :)
StalaCtites-c for ceiling; StalaGmite-g for ground.
Ahh I like it. Thanks for sharing.
I was painting at the time, but as soon as you said mash potatoes I looked up - I don't know why, of course you didn't use mash potatoes...or did you...
:) none used in this video
Stalagmites mount UP
Stalagtites tumble down
Cool.
RC Nebula
This is the first RC Nebula shot out! Right on!! 🤘
Dope
Thanks Michael 🤘
Hi I was wondering where you get your foam from ?
Home Depot. You can also find it in the description of the video from Amazon.
@@TabletopWitchCRAFT ok thanks, yeah I found some on Amazon but not much
Stalagmites are on the ground, stalactites are on the ceiling.
Nailed it
The big question is what do you call it when they finally connect to one another?
...... 🤯
@@TabletopWitchCRAFT It's called a pillar or my favorite a sinter column.
StalagMite extends from the floor just like a capital "M". StalagTite extends from the ceiling like a capitcal "T"
Sample of it in action
T T T T T
M__M__MM__
Very cool. Thanks for sharing!
StalacTites -- T = top
Good one.
Stalagmites are on the floor, Stalactites are from the ceiling
You got it.
Why would you not use your hot wire knife to give your stalagmites and stalactites a more realistic looks. They currently look a little cartoony
Go for it.
stalaCtites=Ceiling
stalaGmites=Ground
Good one :)
Stalagmites MIGHT reach the roof, Stalagtites have to hang TIGHT to the roof.
That’s it :)
Tights are tight to the roof.
That's it John.
Mites crawl up, tites fall down
Good one.
Tights come down
Yes they do... good one.
Stalactites hang down from above like ladies "Tights" (hose for americans), stalagmites start from floor level so they "might" one day reach the ceiling.... British year 7 geography...
Thanks, that's a good one.
