    OMG how is this not a genre of table-top gaming unto itself?! Oh man, I could see a steadily growing collection of these to serve as one-room, or small building interiors to drop onto the table as players come and go from places, or discover little buildings along their overworld travels. Little country inn's, blacksmith shops, pubs, abandoned houses, small jails, shops. And when you're done with the room, you close it up and put it back on a shelf, all self-contained. AMAZING o_o

      Indeed, I've made a few of these now ...and while they're not as versatile as regular dungeon tiles, I kinda like them for the reasons you stated above :)
      (I might see if I can do a dreaded 'short' video of some of my other finished ones at some point)

    I see you making an entire dungeon like this one day. Just think. You pop into a game store with a case full of tiny boxes, each a ready-made and prepared scene. Your players start very confused, but then call you on the genius of doing it this way.

    more like this please! it is so hard having the compulsion to make terrain but have to transport boxes of said terrain to my local gaming store to actually use it.... this dungeon in a box idea is perfect for the gm on the go!

    • @CrookedStaffTerrain
      @CrookedStaffTerrain  Рік тому

      Yeah, the majority of my IRL gaming has also been done away from home - so I normally have to do most of it on a wet-erase mat (with a few scatter pieces thrown in here and there) - and I just concentrate on building one or two main encounter areas (which isn't perfect, but like you say, transporting more than that is a bit of an issue).
      However, the only problem with the '...in a box' builds is that I normally tailor the textures to fit the specific size of box I happen to have (the recent 'short' is a good example of this) - so I really need to make the box as well if I want to do a video/adventure that everyone can make (which I do hope to do at some point - I just don't know when).
      So yeah - it's on the to do list (with 101 other things 😅).

    • @last2nkow
      @last2nkow Рік тому +1

      @@CrookedStaffTerrain I know that pain. I've been transporting those 20liter boxes of terrain and it's an absolute ache on my little scooter XD
      I've been sort of groping towards the idea of like a nesting box of terrain interiors, like 5 or 6 trays that all fit into one another, with textured tops to be the outside of the building so I can put down a tray upside down before they open the door, then flip the tray over and arrange furniture inside when they go in, but your boxes are such an elegant solution to the problem.
      A set of square ones of different sizes and another set of rectangles all set up to be fairly generic dungeon rooms with a little space for movable scatter in there would give an absolute plethora of options, so that's probably my next goal.

  • @AdamBragg
    @AdamBragg Рік тому +2

    An interesting format. I could easily see the versatility and convenience of using a collection of these in varying sizes for when one has to travel to run a game. I would expect them to take up a lot of space once I had a lot of them due to the box form factor. If my entire terrain system were based around this method, I would need a lot more storage room. Using a flatter method of floor tiles separate from wall tiles increases the modularity while decreasing the storage footprint. Still, this is clever and I can definitely see it being appropriate for specific situations.
    I like the multi-camera approach, with more practice I can see it greatly improving your videos. I also approve of your technique of asking 2-3 relevant questions to improve the comment rate. It's obviously working, keep doing it! 🙂

    • @CrookedStaffTerrain
      @CrookedStaffTerrain  Рік тому +1

      For a similar 'pizza box dungeon' that I made - the box also housed a bunch of flat 2D tiles (i.e. no 2.5D walls) ...and that helped to make a bigger encounter area. I'll have to post a video at some point to show what I mean :)

    I follow a number of papercrafting channels that do cardmaking.... AND box-making (The posh paper lady is the one I'm mostly thinking about here). With her techniques to make a box - I think doing this could be really easy even if we don't have a particular box in the mail. (I get a lot of very big boxes with my bulk pet food order). I REALLY like this idea. Especially for small buildings. It could be really cool to do a farm house box, to dump in the middle of a battlemap for a farm combat.

    I couldn't tell the size from the community post. I see now that is 4" x 4". That *_is_* tiny.
    I got some boxes to hold a ream of computer paper. As they were sold in pack of 25, I now have 20, 8.5" x 11" x 2" boxes to make into one-shot dungeons and/or common buildings. I just need to come up with a story so I know what I need make.

      Nice (with regard to the boxes).
      Sometimes I just start making some terrain with only the vaguest idea of what I can use it for... and then I'll kinda work the story around the terrain. Failing that, I find an old tomb will rarely be a bad choice :)

      @@CrookedStaffTerrain: I used one of my boxes to store all the pieces of the Build Along Dungeon, so I could, should, make the dungeon behind the bricked-up archway. (Not necessarily a tomb,) I have to think about this...

    I love this idea - once you have a bunch of them you could create random mini adventures quite easily by blind selecting some of them, especially if you have predefined encounters for each room. Superb for new DM's, And the dual camera is great. What's the software as I was looking for something to allow 2 webcams but was struggling to find a decent one. Cheers, keep up the good work.

      To capture the footage I used OBS (I finally gave it a go - as I think it's what a lot of folks use) - it's a free download.
      I did have to switch camera views manually while I was recording though (like I would if it were a livestream) - but I'm still figuring it out :)

      @@CrookedStaffTerrain Cheers. Might give some video stuff next year, tried it a while back but my DSLR kept switching off during filming so I'm thinking Webcams may be the way to start.

    Haha, I did this to troll my spouse, well sort of trolling... It's one of the outcomes. Nothing to this quality calibre. She's not a fan of all the boxes I keep around. So pasted terrain and took memories from the games we played and left a little note card with the little notes about the memories between the characters had in the scenes and recreated the scenes, crudely mind you. It more like do it your foldout papercraft scenes. The plan is when I die she (or one of the kids will find all these allegedly empty 'boxes' of memories.) I hope they open them before they bin them... Oh well, I'll be gone. The Joy was in the journey. And if push comes to shove about my 'empty' box collection... This is the troll part. I can show them how empty they really are. That's the less desirable outcome but entirely self serving. No one will question my box collection ever again. Either way I win (in my own mind.)

      The thinner corrugated card that I used for the stairs is around 1.5 to 2mm thick. Hope that helps :)
