Just found this channel through Bard's Craft, and I gotta say, I am inspired! I always love finding new and simple ways to build terrain, and the idea of using pens to mark out all of the detail feels ingenious. I've always had difficulty taking the time to assemble physical detail on a terrain piece, and painting the details is tedious; drawing, on the other hand, is easy and fun! I'll definitely be applying some of your concepts here to my own terrain.
Great tip on the 2 ply cardboard and running them in opposite directions. I worked on composite builds back in college like this. Also your highlights were spot on man! Great job!
If anyone is interested in this kind of terrain crafting but slightly different, I highly recommend Crooked Staff Terrain here on UA-cam. He's got a whole playlist of videos about crafting tiles and dungeon furniture and interiors with cheap stuff like cardboard and paper. He's even got some on cave tiles, trees, and some multi-level dungeon features like stairs and stuff. With that said, I'm gonna stick around and see what other things Franky has done. I like his style.
Blind Thrasher yea he is really awesome actually. His approach might even be quicker and easier. I’m a little too all over the place. Hope you still enjoy the builds tho.
I really like the two sided design idea. Especially bc of how many looks you can give your dungeons. Like I really like the way you stacked them at the end. Excited for the new dungeon playlist 🥴😊😊🔥🔥🔥🔥
Great video Franky. Love the simplicity of your tiles. Liked your use of the marker's edge along the outside of the tile (never seen that before). I specially liked your use of the white gel pen for highlights. Awesome job.
That white gel pen highlight/darker pen shading technique is awesome! Gotta get on my cardboard tiles. Also, I love the collaborative nature of the terrain crafting community.
My first project after getting into the hobby was a set of cardboard dungeon tiles, & since then I've repurposed the basic technique I used into bases for other terrain, as well as a set of coasters for my mom. Also, a mostly unsuccessful attempt to make a better, home-brew Undying Sands... which wasn't because of the cardboard but more because clear dry erase paint is a giant PITA to acquire. My method probably takes longer than Franky's or Lucas's, but produces a stronger & slightly nicer looking product. The main drawback is probably extra time vs. materials/money. 1. cut desired shape out of cardboard, & layer it. I don't bother criss-crossing the corrogations, & honestly it doesn't seem to affect the final product. Glue together using some PVA product (I mostly go for elmer's glue-all, so mid-strength) 2. Optionally, glue on thin foam to the outside (what you get from styrofoam plates & take-out boxes is perfect), & texture it. The foam can be effectively textured, much better than the cardboard, although the cardboard's natural texture actually makes for a pretty good smooth stone effect. 3. Get yourself some play-doh, or knock-off play-doh. Or probably any type/form of modeling clay really, but I use play-doh because it's cheap. Jam this into the corrogations & then smooth it out, basically letting it act as a filler. Let that dry. 3. apply a Black Magic Craft paint+modpodge priming all over the craft. You should only need 1 coat, but don't be shy, you should not see brown showing thru. Do top & bottom, the mod podge strengthens the cardboard, & actually makes it somewhat moisture resistant. Also paint over the playdoh filler on the edges, the result will be a rough but aesthetically pleasing rim, that can be easily styled into something like chipped flint if you so choose. 4. paint however you want 5. I finish off with a matte polycrylic sealent to add additional strength. It has the disadvantage of adding more shine than I like, but not enough to spoil the piece. Swap in your favorite choice of sealent/varnish instead.
A Franky D and Bardscraft collab - yeah! Great result with the painted finish - love the suggestion of double thickness opposing the corrugations. Allows you to dig into the depth for features in special tiles too - stairs down, goop pools etc. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Damn... And here I am, procrastinating and telling myself I don't have the materials I need to make awesome looking tiles... 😕 Awesome video, I really like the look the gel pen high- and lowlighting gives them!
Love your stuff dude, not my aesthetic but your techniques help a lot with my stuff. *The only thing I'd do different would be to edge clad with paper and then paint it. Or hell use black construction paper to hide the corrugation. Edited for the fix you did... it's very similar to what I do.
@@FrankyDCrafter dude I always enjoy your stuff and the online crafting community is keeping me sane atm. My players play in a post apocalyptic setting, crawling around the ruins of "Magitech -Prague" (because I fell in love with the architecture) but your stuff is so cool it's awesome. I hope you get a huge boost in subs soon man. Edit: currently my players aren't vault diving but there's a whole slew of terrain being built.
Thanks dude! It really got me hooked again on keeping on with my tiles! I was really nervous trying to make it all too perfect I just stopped doing, it's just good and easy!
Simple idea. I love the drawings. I think these are a lot more practical than the foam,, and biodegradable is better any time.. I think I'd do a mix of yours for the main tiles and maybe Bard's for the boss rooms.
This is a great concept! I love the innovation. I have one critique = You should paint the edges of the tiles a neutral color like black or grey. The naked cardboard takes away from the finished aesthetic. It gives a unfinished vibe.
Those troll statues in the temple shot...they are super dungeon explore style. Where are they from? What size? Great video, by the way, and great use of the white pen.
Sebastien Blaue they are from mistmourn coast warband. Check in miniature market first. I know they recently had them on sale super cheap. Hopefully it’s still on sale.
Totally right on about having one big room ready to set down
Wyloch's Armory this is the official seal of approval for card stock tiles!
Nice drawing, and a fun challenge!
Bard's Craft I’ll be waiting for the next challenge!! This was awesome working on this bro. Thank a lot 🔥 🔥
Great video. Easy way to make tiles. I would love your opinion of our tiles. Thanks
The Crafting Brothers on my way!

Ethan Seward this was also something I discovered while working on these. It’s a lot easier for me and I end up enjoying the process more.
The illustration effect made by using markers over a painted base is awesome!
Scratch Bashing thank you. It was more fun than painting them.
Great tip on the 2 ply cardboard and running them in opposite directions. I worked on composite builds back in college like this. Also your highlights were spot on man! Great job!
Wow! I think the results you were able to achieve, considering your use of simple materials, really showcase your talent as an artist.
Jacob Hope thanks. I wasn’t expecting them to turn out this good btw it was a happy accident.
Looks great!

So simple it's brilliant. Now I can use up the cardboard I've been hoarding too.
Martin Phillpot that’s the best part, and if you ever have leftover cardboard from other projects you can always add more tiles.
I may try to add magnets to these...someway. someday. Haha
Thank you! I want to make new versions of these.

Echo Delta i did the edge work because I noticed they looked awkward when I put them together without it.
Daaaaaang.... Even for non-cardboard this would be an epic result!
Found you through bards craft, love your shelf of past projects, I dig the bright pastel neon colors and Aztec vibe!
emil flognoid thanks a lot. I got more on the way.
Awesome collab! Good idea with the double sided tiles
Tenurion thanks
I love your bold cartoony and colorful style. Very inspiring.
My man! Just eas turned into your channel. Really dig your bright, colorful style. Super unique, and I'm jealous of your players!
Matthew Mc Fadden Thanks a lot. I have to start doing some gloomy stuff to balance out the colors.

M Young it was a surprise even to me.
Your illustration skills are on point, dude

The simple shading with the gel pen is major win for very little effort. Great idea. Your tiles look awesome!
Chris Venter Im really glad you like them.
These turned out great Franky, what a fantastic way to get dungeon tiles made :O
Nates Miniatures thanks a lot bro. This was so fun actually.

These tiles look amazing!
Fnordathoth i was surprised myself lol
Great job.
Sweet tiles! These turned out really good!

5header getting a lot done because of the quarantine but not as much as I would like

Nice video, good to find inspiration from regular materials.
Good call on the double layer for warping, warping is one of th reasons i avoid cardboard. I may have to re-consider
Hall of Craft it worked out perfectly
Great Job...
Wow, I just finished painting those Trolls you have on the goblin tiles holding the axes today. Kinda freaky.
Velveteen V I love them but I had to paint them as goblins statues.
Oh man, these tiles are amazing! Your painting skills are great!
VERY nice job!!!!!
Thank you, I appreciate it.
I love the double sided, easy! The only thing I would of added was a thin paper strip on the edges to cover the cardboard
Gell pens look good. I'm gonna try more pens and paint pens. Nice tiles
Very good...
MrVlandus they’re okay lol 😂
Wow great job! Here from Bard's Craft. I really dig the Aztec setting! Can't wait to go through your older videos. Keep up the exellent crafting.
Merlin's Monkey oh no..... not the older video 😅. Jk

Ronald Brow very true, I think I will finish them off with card stock or something. For the sake of the video and the challenge I left them exposed.
Have you not heard of peasant-level crafts? :D
Nice work man, very creative 👍
To avoid warping, paint both sides.
wonderful stuff! Thanks for this ^^
gracias
I'm not gonna lie, though, some construction paper cladding over the corrugations would do a lot of work for these
Drew Jameson Im planning on it for sure
