Seven Mary Three
The LA Times would write about the band Seven Mary Three “The members of rock band Seven Mary Three belong to a minority of young rockers: those willing to acknowledge that the road to commercial success is paved with compromise.” It’s not often that rock n roll bands embrace those kinds of labels.
I was listening to the bonfire on sirius xm. Those guys have been given me a lot of shoutouts over the past year and i’m so grateful for it. WHen you’re a youtuber it feels very insular and small so I honestly have a hard time coming to terms that people even watch my videos. One of the episodes of the bonfire i listened to had them discussing the 90’s era band seven mary three. And usually when I come across a band i had forgotten about, the first thing i usually do is go through my request form. There were several people who have already requested seven mary three. By the way guys if you want to submit ideas for me to do episodes on use the link in the description box below. I go through it every week and TSo let’s get to it today. Whatever happended to the band seven mary three who were best known for the mid 90’s hit song ‘Cumbersome’
Seven Mary Three formed in 1992 when two college students with the same first name Jason met midway through their junior year while attending College of William & Mary in Virginia. Vocalist and rhythm guitarist Jason Ross and lead guitarist Jason Pollack. Both men were born in Kansas with Pollack moving to Virginia later on and having a tv-less childhood telling deseret news I listened to all my parents' classic rock albums, the radio; really anything that sounded melodic and good. I also went to see a lot of local folkie mountain music. I learned to play at college and realized this is what I wanted to do. When I met Jason and heard him sing, I really fell into it.
Ross and Pollack would both pursue degrees in the arts. By this point in time both men hadn’t been playing guitar for very long with Ross telling earofnewt “Jason started playing when he was a sophomore in college,” “so I guess he’s into his fourth year playing now. I had a dusty old guitar sitting in the closet, and I pretty much learned everything from him, so neither one of us has been playing very long.” For his English degree Ross was able to get half of his college credit by writing short stories and poetry, which inspired a lot of the lyrical content on Seven Mary Three’s debut record according to earofnewt.
Both Jason’s woud bond over their love of the 80’s TV show Chips and Gabrielle Garcia Marquez Novels. The duo began writing songs, but Ross was nervous about getting on stage and performing in front of people telling Rolling Stone "I’d always kind of wanted to perform, but I was too much of a coward to get onstage," "Jason was able to push me into it." Within several months of writing their first song, the pair performed as an acoustic duo before adding Bassist Casey Daniel and drummer Giti Khalsa and began playing local coffee shops and clubs and doing their best to avoid the highly lucrat

Too heavy too light too black too white too wrong too right man
Thanks for posting but the links aren't working
American Standard is the most underrated 90’s album to me. Lame, Rodrigo, Devil Boy, My My are all fantastic. Love the album.
The whole album is really good.
@@danejurus69 agreed. Just listed my personal favorites from it.
I was a bouncer in Austin, TX and Seven Mary Three was the first show I worked. I was center stage, right in front of the lead singer. They blew the roof off the place.
Good album but not the most underrated. Imo. Blind melon 1st effort is. But I loved American standard
Great album, it's up there with Throwing Copper by Live from me
The Water's Edge is a super underrated 90's rocker!
True true
What was the one about the dog 🐕 called?? So good!”
The Waters Edge is one of the best songs from The Seven Mary Three.
One of my favorites
Everything is so underrated
I liked “waters edge” too. Still listen to that almost every week
That was always my favorite song by them
Boo
Song is 🔥
My fav 7M3 song 🔥
These guys were huge way back when. They dominated the rock radio stations back in 95
Their first 2 albums were great! I've seen em live 3 times, and they always sounded A+.
Orange avenue was a little weak, but all the rest are gems
@@leehasselbeck453OMG FOR REAL, i hate that album
@@jaggercanney7821 I wasn't a big fan of Orange Avenue at first, either, but it quickly grew on me. Southwestern State is a go to song on my all time best playlist.
“Lucky” is the best song they wrote in my opinion. Even to this day, I can play it in the guitar and sing it from the heart. And it takes me to the 90’s memory lane.
My brother's band opened for those guys like 10-15 years ago in a tiny dive bar, and they were still fucking amazing. I'd seen them the year prior at huge ampitheater show where they opened for Gin Blossoms, because I got cheap tickets, but their album American Standard was a classic from start to finish. I highly recommend it to anyone that likes their radio hits, and hasn't given it a listen.
Truly an amazing band. The evolution of their sound from American Standard to Day and Night Driving is what every band should be allowed to follow
I saw 7 Mary 3 about 10-15 years ago in my small home town Ironton Ohio at a festival called Rally on the River. It was great. They were great.
Even if I never liked the bands you talk about in your videos, they are always interesting and makes me revisit the band and re evaluate my music tastes years later. And btw I never miss a video😁
I usually only like maybe 1 or 2 song from a band honestly. It's extremely rare to find an album that I can play all the way through. Take pink Floyd for example.
My mom bought the American standard cd for me. I remember listening to it on the school bus on my portable CD player. 5th grade or so.
These were some of the first songs I learned on guitar!
Backbooth is my favorite 7M3 album. They are one if my favorite bands.
Back in the olden days when we bought cds, I had this one
Same
I miss buying CDs
I'm surprised there's no mention of "Lucky" from Rock Crown. This played on our local alternative station in the mid 90's. That entire album is so damn solid. The last song called "Oven" is just about the perfect way to end an album. It answers the question from the track "Time's like these". Read up about Sylvia Plath. There was a lot of hurt and healing in that album.
There's a fantastic live version of My My from 2010 that showcases what a great vocalist Jason really is. Underrated band.
I actually think a lot of their later music is so underrated. Day & Night driving is a beautiful album, with Things I stole being my personal favourite (even covered it).
I think the management really let this band down. The music was always great, but not well promoted, and they played shitholes.
Totally agree. A band with very few singles, but a lot of great songs.
We must start rating everything correctly
Water’s Edge was on repeat in my younger years. Playing everywhere I went.
Saw, 7 Mary 3 back in 98. With Brother Cane and Candlebox. Awesome show. Met 7. M. 3 after the show. Cool guys
Lame is my absolute favorite! Great band.. seen them in a small venue in St pete Fl around 1996.. they were freaking awesome
This band was one of my biggest vocal style inspirations growing up.
Unfortunately now, that's not what people are into lol.
But when I was a teenager, I got this cd as Columbia houses cd of the month and before I even heard a song , some girl I knew told me I would love that band, and I did and still do. American standard and Rock crown are great all the way through.
The 90s produced some amazing Alt rock bands that we just don't see so much these days .
My favorite music is country. Loved 90s country the best. I love good music of all types. 90s had some great Rock no doubt..
@@ohiojg1230 I agree 100% my mom listened to country music throughout the 90s. I liked a lot of it then and I like it even more now.
I saw them in 1996 with POE and Ned's Atomic Dustbin. I expected it to be a pretty decent show, but I was pleasantly surprised at how ridiculously good it actually was. All three bands killed it. A couple hundred concerts later, that is still one of the top five best concerts I've been to.
That’s the gayest thing ive ever read
I remember listening to Ned's in the early 90's still in high school.
I saw that tour. Damn good show. 7M3's encore included a damn good rendition of Fortunate Son. Makes sense as they are clearly more southern than punk influenced.
WJRR was and still is a really kickass radio station.... Growing up in that area I can attest, They're awesome! I saw SM3 the first time at the Livestock music festival outside of Tampa. Their rise was amazing to witness! WOW, The mid and late 90s was a hella badass time to be down here in Florida! Thanks for covering this, Your channel is awesome!
It's awesome how 7M3, similar to Collective Soul's situation, got their initial boost with a rough cut of what would become their debut single. Didn't know that the band, as well as Juliana Hatfield, were on Mammoth Records early on. Another great early 90s band on that same label is Vanilla Trainwreck, who have three great albums with similar melodic sounds. Indie labels always seemed to have cool, unique approaches for how they work with their bands!
I remember hearing this song every night on Toledo's WIOT during Grizzly Brown's evening shift. He used to play this at the beginning of his shift if I remember correctly. I do miss having the Detroit and Toledo radio market. The song has great dynamics. It perfectly captures that feeling of when you're getting jerked around and not standing up for yourself.
This was my first concert, they played in Downtown Toledo. During the 90's, it was known as Rally by the River, awesome times.
Wow i actually remember "Rally By The River"!! I never made it to Toledo to go (i live in Cleveland) but back in the 90's i remember seeing the ads for it and thinking how amazing the line-ups were!
One of the absolute best fests i ever attended was the H.O.R.D.E. Festival , maybe in '96/'97(?) held at Blossom. The artists i can remember seeing were Blues Traveler, Barenaked Ladies, Sponge, Iggy Pop, and The Rollins Band. It was epic 😀
Damn dude I was there as well!
Cumbersome has such a great opening riff, I still remember it till this day
yea its one of a few I actually can play on guitar
I love your channel you literally hit on everything I'm always curious about. I'm a true rocker ...Thank you for the knowledge you give me 💗
much appreciated! We've got some really cool stories coming up
@@rnrtruestories Thanks for uploading this. Some of the links to the other videos that you reference in this video aren't working though
“Cumbersome” is an absolute jam, and a song I throw on any time I need to inject some energy into my day.
I like they're song "Wait" I've had that video on my UA-cam favorites for 10 years now
One of my favorite bands! Their last album was great, but that was a long 14 years ago.
Day and Night Driving was a great album too
The bass player Casey Daniels is still here in Central Florida. I see him sometimes. He has had health problems and is no longer a musician. It is sad because he is really one of the nicest guys you could ever meet. I wish there had been more about him in this video.
What city in Central Florida are you in?
Casey was kind of a dick though. He openly criticized fans. The whole band kind of became bitter toward the end
@@leehasselbeck453 He might have been at the time. I didn't know him then. He's a nice guy now though.
@@GaltJohn2008 I bet he is. The music industry can be brutal.
I seen them in Tampa Fl. Before they blew up..My first concert ever..When I downloaded their album off of Limewire..Damn!!🥰🥰🥰
7M3 The most underrated band all time.
Along with all the other under rated bands
Cumbersome is one of my absolute favorite songs. Iconic ..
Hey bro I just want to thank you for your content on SM3
I've loved this band for a long time. I actually seen them in
Sandusky Ohio at Bike week.
My friend turned me on to them
As we'd sir around and drink and smoke. Yeah the good stuff
lol 😆😏🥴
I mean I'd heard of them before
Cumbersome song. But the rest of their CD just grew on me.
We definitely played that CD into the record books. 👌🏼😉
Thanks again brother.
God bless 🙏🏼✝️🙏🏼
Thanks for the kind comments! Much appreciated!
@@rnrtruestories right on bro!
You're welcome. Thank you as well, for your reply and special brand notification. You my friend are also greatly appreciated. Keep up the great work and video content coming. Peace out.✌️😎
The good old days when "the next collective soul" was a bands highest aspiration
"Lucky" from their Rock Crown album is criminally under rated. There is a live version here on UA-cam that is especially amazing.
Rodrigo, My My My, and Lame are AWESOME!! Actually that entire album "Churn" is one of the best albums of the 90's.
Your content and your vocabulary are awesome.. im not one to subscribe or follow much, however, after i listened to one of your videos i became hooked.. the 90s music was awesome and i love to hear some of the crap from fights between bands, the main singer, overdoses to the whatever happened. keep going.. awesome job
We Bonfire fans love your videos! Keep up the good work! Crackle Crackle.
Thank you!
The glory days of the "yarl" sound that was so prevalent around that time.
7m3 is one of my favorite bands
7M3 is an awesome band. Their album Orange 🍊 is a work of art too.
Hey Dude ! Thanks for the work and creativity you put in to create each Video . I Love your
UA-cam Channel !! And
7M3 is another Band I've always wondered what the hell happened to . Thanks for creating this one . I'll be watching this one a few times until your next one comes out . I hope you're doing well and staying safe . 🎸😀
Jason Ross 7M3 are some of the best...hands down.
Rock Crown is a masterpiece to me. It is the anthem of my returning home from the military and trying to find my place in life as a civilian. It still invokes those feelings of disorientation, loneliness, and odd freedom that I felt decades ago.
Excellent album!
Rock crown was fantastic, as was economy of sound
I got to see seven Mary Three about six or seven times in the early years of their career. American standard and rock crown will forever hold a place in my heart. In my opinion two of the most underrated albums ever. In a selfish way I'm glad they didn't get to be huge because I got to see them up close many times😂
American Standard is one of my favorite albums from top to bottom. Very very underrated
I really liked Seven Mary Three. I liked a lot of there songs .. I can think of about 13 of them off them top of my head ..
Keep up the great videos... we are watching and appreciate you!
Saw them a couple of times in the 90’s, was a big fan back then.
Man I am glad I'm the age I am(50)and was the age I was during the 90s it was such a great decade for music, love it or hate it now. Also I'm from Baltimore so I was able to listen to WHFS also which there has never been a better radio station before or since. What a great time.
I seen you in the comments of their video a week or so ago. The song popped in my head the other day.
I went to high school with Giti the drummer I still talk to him from time to time online
I love this channel because it reminds me of music I had when I was younger that I forgot I had.
Crackle crackle bro 🔥
Literally went to try to find some of those bits and got hung up on La Grange and Dave Matthews 😂
In a boys dream.
I liked the crown album and that orange one wasn't too bad. Both very mellow. I agree they were different from American Standard which was just a great album from beginning to end
Steve Robinson and Sean Halter are the 2 guys from WJRR/Clear Channel who gave a LOT of phenomenal Orlando rock bands of that era their pop.... The BIG Orlando bands were 7M3, My Friend Steve, Gumwrapper Curve, The Kill, Virgos Merlot (Brett Hestla was the singer of that group, he went on to play bass in Creed for a bit, and was an awesome producer)... Creed came down from North Florida (as well as Shinedown early in their career), and bands like 3 Doors Down made their way to Orlando, Collective Soul was always here, and Local H always came through.... There were also a great Nu Metal/Hard Rock scene with bands like Skrape, of course Limp Bizkit, Full Devil Jacket spent a lot of time here, and Sevendust relocated to the area.... Then we had our local "almost there, and signed to a smaller label, and opened for these bigger acts" like my band Fuse (formerly Big Bad Willie), The Denizens, Fizzbin, Gargamel, Furious George, Ghettoblaster, Choke, Grumpy, and quite a bunch of others who had guys end up in some of these other bands...... That Orlando era of college/modern/heavy rock was happening at the exact same time as the Pop band boom, it was a crazy time in the Orlando scene..... WJRR was tantamount in the success of a lot of these bands, and are still one of the US biggest rock format radio stations.... These were some fun days
Day and night driving is the best CD no one has ever heard. IF you are older then 30 you should love it. All the cd's are great. Even economy of sound has grown on me. Wait , zeroes and ones, Still I find you, faster to name a few. BUt Day and night driving is just great. Rock crown. Man they should be one of the best bands around today and nothing. Dang. Mismanaged? I dont get it.
for years i had a tape with waters edge on it...given to me by a friend in 98...but the copy was unlabled...i needed almost 15 years to find out it was seven mary three...by the time the tape was so used up by playing it almost daily in my car...
Oh yeah that day we seen SM3 at the Roeders Harley Davidson. Sandusky Ohio
One of my friends found a
VIP bracelet on the ground.
So we all took turns going into that area. But after everyone had a turn, they gave it back to me. Bcuz they knew how fond of SM3 I was.
So I made my way up to the front row. And of course yelled my loud mouth off for an encore "Devil Boy"
Man it was the greatest thing!
I do a pretty good karaoke version. Well actually it's a great version. Man I wish I could have gotten up there to help w/the vocals. That'd have been awesome. Yeah I grew up watching "Chips" I always thought there was a connection there w/the name of the band. Very cool
🤘🏼😎🤘🏼 Alright bro take care.
Peace out.✌️🙂
Seven Mary Three is another band that got screwed by their record companies. Much like Stone Temple Pilots early in their career, 7M3 were labeled as Grunge wannabes, which limited the ability of critics and fans alike to see them for the incredibly unique and talented band that they were. "American Standard" is one of my favorite albums, and I certainly believe that "Rock Crown" does not get the respect that it deserves. Unlike STP, Seven Mary Three were never able to break free of the Grunge label, mostly due to a lack of proper marketing by the record companies. It is unfortunate that a lot of people missed out on a band that had a lot to offer. I don't think they were even finished evolving their sound by the time that their careers ended. I often wonder what they could have become. They were signed too early, and just became a victim of their own success.
MIs management. For sure
Roderigo is one of the coolest songs ever!!!!👍🎸👊🎸🤘😎
My my flat out rocks
I always loved their first two albums, but couldn’t get past their new sound afterwards. I need to look back into them again!
“The Economy Of Sound” (4th album) is really very good. I thought it was better than “Orange Ave” (3rd album).
Loved the American Standard album back in the day! Great video!
I saw them live in like '05 and they rocked.
Check out the song “Lucky” from this group. Another great song that flew under the radar.
Possibly the best song they ever wrote, honestly. That song grips you in the f*cking gut. It's amazing.
7M3's American Standards album was one of MY MY favorites from that era. Bonfire is the best.
See what you did there 😉
American Standard is a gem, not technically great players but the songs in the vocals have so much heart
Might be a long shot here, but have you ever thought about covering the band Dust? That was Marky Ramone's first band and he had a completely different style than he did with The Ramones. Richie Weiss was on guitar and vocals and would later on be a producer for Kiss. Kenny Aaronson was on bass and would later on join the New York Dolls among many other musical endeavors. They released two albums and were very talented. Just thought to maybe spark an idea for a story. Great channel as well and thank you for all the great stories!
Day and Night Driving was a fantastic album.
I watch all your videos whether I've heard of the band or not. I don't know this band, but you sure got my attention with the William & Mary (Bill & the Bitch) reference, since my brother graduated from there in 1986. Don't hear about that school every day.
Survive your influences is incredibly insightful.
Looks like this is the second time covering Seven Mary Three, having done one 2 years ago. 🤷🏻♂️
By definition the word "cumbersome" means to "hard to handle". When i started to listen to listen too seven mary three, i to look this up because i didint know what the word meant.. and all admit that.
I like that all there songs are poetic and have euphomisms and are kinda esoteric it makes you want to listen to them more.
Dis/Location is their best record
That's gotta be the only time anyone has ever said "these guys are the next Collective Soul!" Lol
Great band, I still listen to them.
Jason Ross is writing and releasing music again. 😃
Really?
I saw Seven Mary 3 basically booed off the stage in Dallas while playing between Love Spit Love and The Cure at the Bronco Bowl (RIP). Strange night.
Great video. Thanks for putting it together.
One note though:
That image of founding members is not Giti Khalsa but Mike Levesque (the band's 2nd drummer)
Was just jamming to this one yesterday
One of the first concerts I ever attended. My My was prob my fave from their one big album
I worked with Giti Khalsa's mom in Northern Virginia. Whenever they played in DC/NOVA/Tidewater, I was always given tickets to the show including back stage passes. They were talented and genuinely nice to their fans. SIDENOTE: Giti's mom told me his love of drumming was from an early stage -- he was in the Williamsburg, Va fife and drums corp. He could pound those damn drums like a savage!
Great band miss them!
Been waiting for this one...
🤘🎶 Water's Edge and Cumbersome are still in my top favorite songs of all time🤘🎶😍
Your videos are inspiring and informative. Especially as a gen x'er.
They became Pearl Jam.
Cumbersome is one of my fav songs
I immediately clicked on this!
The question we SHOULD be asking is what happened to Seven Mary One and Two!
Love Seven Mary Three! Also love Squirrel Nut Zippers and Juliana Hatfield!
CHIPS and Gabriel Garcia Marquez novels are strange things to bond over.
I saw seven mary three open for aerosmith with my dad in the mid 90s....stephen tyler was a hot mess reading lyrics off of a teleprompter and sluring his speech....seven mary three blew them out of the water
Yeesh I thot that was weiland in the thumbnail at first glance
I still listen to waters edge from time to time...good stuff
Waters Edge touches deep. Grunge song hall of fame in my opinion.
