      Mostly accurate- i being from Madison as a local musician and actually assisting spooner as a drum roadie for a few shows. These are great memories riding on a school bus to a few gigs with the band truly paying serious bumpy dues listening to the band talk and plan ahead including Doug and Butch. Even then they were driven, totally hooked into the business of music and networking from my view and brief interaction. They were submitting demos , doing live simulcast on Fm and doing showcases. They self produced records . Key
      Lesson is never giving up , relentless pursuit of a goal and sticking together. And yes luck is a big factor as well but mostly drive is number 1 success attribute imho. The three guys have been together at least 40 years probably longer . Now I’m a fan and enjoy concerts and I keep writing and recording myself but when I see them I feel so proud and have that special Madison connection from the roadie gig and my band recording and mixing at smart later, right around the smashing pumpkins days. They stay fresh keep writing and success continues.

    I saw them play Voodoo Fest in New Orleans in the very early 2000s. When they started “I’m Only Happy When It Rains”, the sky opened up and *poured*. Incredible. Crowd went nuts. Shirley even commented on how cool of a moment is was.
    I love that they owned Shirley being a sex-symbol. She absolutely was.

      I was addicted to them to when I was a KID. As in, as a KID my mind saw it differently than what it's intentions were about. The music, clothes, color, design etc got me distracted from the REAL MEANING OF THE WORDS. I tell the kids now, don't see what I thought I saw as I was still evolving and always will be. The music world is a different reality as it's a different Job*. It's a JOB that THEY wanted to pursue. They wanted to express their feelings where as others just wanted 'fame' (what they had thought the world of fame was to be like*)

    I had the pleasure of sitting with Shirley at a party one night after the Scottish Style Awards. She was extremely humble, and incredibly interested in just having a good chat. It was special. She was very inquisitive and asked me all kinds of questions. About my art practice, about my tattoos, all sorts of stuff. If I asked her anything, you know as one does in conversation, she brushed it off and just got back to asking me more questions. It was honestly a really memorable moment because she could easily have hung out with anyone else that night, there were plenty of famous artists and musicians around, but she just sat on a couch and we had a really nice evening chatting.

    Garbage got a raw deal from the Music studio. Classic story where you’re making a fraction of the killing. At the height of their popularity I saw Garbage twice and I truly enjoyed both concerts. During the 90s Shirley Manson was stunning to meet in person when they did a signing in Ann Arbor, MI. Didn’t get any pretentious vibes. I especially remember watching them when they opened for the Smashing Pumpkins. They uncomfortably came out unprepared for another 4 songs because Billy & the band were fighting.

Of course, I was a little kid, so most of my experience with it was poring over the tape list on a weekly basis, marking all of the music that I'd get if I could, and daydreaming about being old enough to sign up. Then, when I was 10 or 11, I actually lied on the form, sent in the penny, and 2 months later I got a box of tapes! I still remember how ecstatic I was. There's nothing like getting a box full of music in the mail ❤🎶🎵

      That's awesome. Fortunately for me, even though my mom and step dad were negligent and abusive in many ways, they DID let me put a check mark next to one or two cd's that I wanted. I can relate to that feeling you get when you're 13 and the new music you've been waiting for comes in the mail

    They're still active, releasing music (latest album was released literally this year), touring, Shirley is very active on band's Instagram, etc., so the title "Happened" is a bit off... It's still "Happening" :)
    Waiting for Garbage in Ukraine, I missed the previous show unfortunately

    It's interesting to see behind the scenes videos of groups. In the 90s, I just assumed Garbage had their stuff together (successful, confident, etc). Apparently, they were regular people who struggled to succeed and doubted themselves. I'm glad they had success and were a good musical influence. Yeah, the 2000s has not been great for music.

    I’ve seen Garbage multiple times. At first at festivals and then 3 times when they were headlining. They never disappoint. I have all of their albums, and there’s only one I am just so/so called Not Your Kind of People. But the two after that, right back to their magic. Their lyrics have been ahead of their time, especially on Bleed Like Me. One of my fave bands next to Radiohead for decades!

    • @KaiDecadence
      @KaiDecadence Рік тому +1

      How interesting because my thoughts mirror yours. I've listened to all their albums and the only one I was so-so on was Not Your Kind of People neither. It wasn't bad but it didn't really have that "oomph" factor that their other albums had but they certainly got that momentum back with Strange Little Birds and No Gods, No Masters, it was like a return to form to their 1995 debut and Version 2.0.

    • @phoenixgirl70
      @phoenixgirl70 Рік тому

      @@KaiDecadence I guess maybe they needed time to get back into their groove after their extended break? I’m just so happy they’re back. I just wish they got the exposure they used to get. When I hear 20 bands that all sound the same it’s so frustrating. But the channel Justin Hawkins Rides Again exposes some really great bands and he’s so funny.He uploads everyday. Oh and Pat Finnerty is a channel where he makes hilarious videos on songs that are just bad WMTSS (What Makes This Song Stink) videos, he’s stepping away from the podcasts, it was just an opportunity. I like to spread some joy during these bleak days especially when I hear from other Garbage fans. : )

    • @KaiDecadence
      @KaiDecadence Рік тому +1

      @@phoenixgirl70 Yeah I think you might be right. Bleed Like Me was a great album, maybe not as experimental as Version 2.0 but a solid Alternative Rock album and I suppose after they went on hiatus post BLM, they may have had a rocky return since they hadn't seen each other in 5 years ad NYKOP ust felt a bit off only for SLB they had been together and felt more like they did in the 90s and were able to make a full-on bounce back haha.
      And yeah it does suck that Garbage aren't as known anymore in the mainstream but I suppose it's for the best because that is what allows Garbage to stay true to themselves without having to compromise artistic integrity for some record company that only cares about safe and profitable.

    • @phoenixgirl70
      @phoenixgirl70 Рік тому

      @@KaiDecadence True about having full control over their music. You’d think though with Butch Vig still producing some of the biggest bands/records still to this day they’d let him do whatever he wants. He’s made so many record companies tons of money.
      But then we have Charlie Puth making a song called Marvin Gaye that is so unsexy and it’s a hit? Marvin must be spinning in his grave! If any of them actually listened to Marvin They’d actually get turned on. Sorry, I just heard that the other day and I was like dumbfounded the crap people love today. Just an old person yelling at clouds. But it’s just so baaad. Btw I was a teen when Marvin was killed so not that old. It just blows my mind some of the stuff that is so popular. There’s still great stuff out there.

    My heart..ty for this refresher. I was obsessed as an adolescent...
    You know how kids..especially neurodivergent kids that will go on and on about their special interests? Yeah that was me..6th grade till my adult yrs. Garbage wasn't anything my peers got into. I would never stfu about them..(aka. Not understanding and missing social cues bc duh I'm neurodivergent af) I was dubbed the garbage girl. I knew all of these details and more😅😂.
    Now that I'm in my mid 30's and the majority of my life was traumatic af. I rarely listen bc it strikes up my trauma responses..🥺
    Garbage to this day is still near and dear to my heart. Still hands down my favorite. Plus I don't really need to listen them bc in my head I can hear them.
    My mother didn't respect boundaries. She actually invaded my privacy and autonomy. She burnt my garbage poster and cds.🥺😬😖🙃.
    I spent many hours researching every damn day. Got in trouble for singing vow at a Christian camp talent show. Parents were not pleased🤣😒🙃
    I'm half awake lol sry

    I met Garbage backstage at Mt. Holyoke college in 2001. My daughter and I were both big fans. We were the only two allowed to see them. Shirley is the nicest person. And Butch was a sweetheart. They offered us food and we hung out with them for about an hour. Shirley told my daughter to do good in school and she kept in touch with her for a bit. My daughter at the time was a senior in high school. She gave us autographed pictures. It was a night to remember.
