(there is a pending code for P1345, blank, diagnosed it and found that this code typically is related to excessive wear in the cam shaft, causing the timing to be incorrect, to correct this issue, he recommends replacing the cam as well as the timing chain components ) what’s the possibility about this being true?

You should just be replacing the distributor or the cam gear
The Cam is a harder metal so no need to worry about replacing the cam or chain

ive got a 96 5.7 vortec and my computer shows normally 22-23 for cam correlation and as such I have the code for it. Truck runs decent when cold but once it warms up it spits and sputters. Just bought it so im not sure if someones replace the distributor in the past or not. Cap looks newer.

Ive been reading up on it and was wondering about the worn gear myself. cam correlation seems to bounce around a bit so I believe the gear is a bit worn but I think most of it is that you may be right and its off by a tooth. Been fixing other things on it (bad o2 sensors, went ahead and replaced both pre-cat sensors with new ACDelco ones) Ive also read that going by timing marks on the balancer is the best way regardless of what sensor claims. If I get a chance tomorrow ill try to check the play in the gear and time it. I imagine if theres play I should be able to slightly rotate the rotor a little back and forth. Overall it has tons of low end power for having 257k on it lol. Mid-top end has a little to be desired but hopefully this may take care of that. At some point if I can find a marine intake I want to slap that on there and get rid of that plastic intake and spider injection junk. Runs better now warm after changing those o2 sensors.

Also sometimes the harmonic balancers will vibrate and timing marks will change

Are you sure you turn the distributor counter clockwise to advance spark??? i thought it was clockwise to advance ...thanks

    Not all for vortec's.

The timing on 97 and up models is not mechanically adjustable, its all computer controlled. Rotating the distrubutor does nothing.

      That's a lie

Correct, you have to have a scan tool to set the timing. It's set on 0 + or - 2 degrees Little bit of leeway but runs best on 0 degrees. Part # Accel 59132. Summit racing plug and play distributor billet aluminum. $188.00.
