Yes it's that easy. My son says if I had my way I'd paint everything white. 😁 Same as me with kids you need to be quick and I find painting so relaxing and in the end you have a lovely piece of furniture. Annie Sloan's paints are that quick and easy with such a lovely finish. Thanks for all the tips Annie. 👍❤️
Yay! I was attending a chalk paint class recently (to add a few advanced skills), and I said that I was sure Annie had wanted to be able to complete a project during school-hours. Nice to hear her say so in this beginner's guide. Also, as one who has arthritis, I do find the AS Brushes very much easier than ordinary brushes. They hold the paint nicely, it goes on smoothly (or not, if you prefer Annie's "every witch way"), and my hand doesn't ache after one item. Am currently on a spree of painting battered old trays for friends for Christmas, each one personalised to suit the friend.
I'm so glad you enjoyed the video, and yes painting should be quick and easy if you want it to be! I'm so glad the brushes are good for your arthritis, I really enjoy using them because of the grip you can get on them.

I absolutely love chalk paint! It’s my new hobby and obsession. ❤️ I find myself searching for pieces with character just to hone my skills. And yes, I have even painted over something because the color didn’t turn out. It’s really a game changer and I can’t imagine life without chalk paint in it! Thank you Annie.
@@AnnieSloanHome Dear Annie , Thank you for your informative tutorials - you are a pleasure to watch ! - may i please ask , when you mention you can always paint over - am i able to do this once the first one has been waxed or would the whole piece need to be sanded before i change the colour ? Love the new video! I have done 5 different pieces of furniture with your white chalk paint and I get so many compliments. So easy to do and awesome results. Thank you!
I love how you can just get right to it with this chalk paint. I'm new with it and have a lot of projects to do so I can't wait to start working with it. I love to draw and paint so this is right up my alley. I need to get a gray tone for a pretty big metal storage cabinet I have outdoors. It holds my growing gear.. Would chalk paint work for that? I live in humid sunny Florida but it'll be protected a little from the outside elements.
I have never chalk painted but have done a great deal of painting properties in my time with standard paint. What I do not understand is why you do not sand the object first for better adherence to the object. All I can think is that the chalk paint grips onto what ever you are painting. Looking at the little unit you painted it was varnished which to me would be too smooth to paint with standard paint as you could scratch it off even with your finger nail.
Hi Annie, I have been watching your videos and I am inspired. You're incredible. I love your videos because you don't waist time, you get right to it. Thank you. BTW, I love the shade of green on your walls. Can you please share what color is it? I would appreciate it. Thank you.
I'm so glad that chalk paint is very 'forgiving.' If I don't like the color, I can just cover with another. Question... if I repaint, do I have to remove the wax from the first coat to repaint? There is no mention when you talk of repainting, but thought I'd check.
Anne, you are such a big inspiration for me! I love your brushes and the way you painting furniture in different dimensions. I have a question How do you clean your brushes from paint and wax?
How delightful to see you Annie! I've been wanting to use chalk paint but wasn't sure of the method. It's so beautiful, I figured it might take lots of doing to have a good result. But from your video, it looks quite easy!!! Thank you so much for showing the simplicity. I'm off to buy my supplies. 😊
Thank you for the video, Paint furniture to the fight corona, active mind and body great medicine. Paint outside if possible vitamin D great for all human and wood. God Bless
I have been wondering why I never heard of chalk paint until recently and why it has become so popular! Now I see why! Can chalk paint be used on walls and is it similar to flat latex paint? I know flat latex paint is very chalkly feeling.
I love the paint - fun and easy to use. It’s great to give new life to old pieces. However, the reason i watched this video was to review - I forgot how long the paint should be allowed to cure before I add the wax. I wish that had been mentioned
I am new to chalk paint. I have an old desk that I am going to paint; but the wood is very dry. My questions is, do I need to put on a primer before I start painting? Thanks for you video. I am excited to start the project this weekend.
I just used your paint for the first time and love it! I have waxed my piece and would like to buff it. How will buffing make it look different and how long after waxing before I can touch the buffet and move it into place?
You can allow the wax to dry overnight and then gently buff with a soft cloth for a more polished look. Otherwise, simply leave it as is for a more natural sheen. After you’ve applied Chalk Paint® Wax, you’ll find that it will become dry to the touch very quickly, allowing you to move your piece into place. The wax will start to harden as the solvents in the wax evaporate. This hardening process is known as “curing” and is what strengthens your finish and gives it its durability. This typically take between 5 and 21 days. Of course, you can use your newly finished piece straight away, but you should treat it with extra care until the wax has cured completely. Avoid extreme heat and moisture and any objects that would scratch or otherwise damage the surface. Wipe up spills immediately and avoid harsh cleaners and abrasive pads. A little bit of care and patience during the curing period will reward you with a finish you will enjoy for years to come.
That depends. Are your cabinets painted with a glossy paint or are they similar to those found at IKEA that are wrapped with a high gloss vinyl? If it's the first option, then yes, you can. I would not paint over a high gloss vinyl. Please let us know if you need for info.
Buy her brushes. Even if you save for them, they are worth it. While in Dallas, I purchased a wax brush advertised as “just as good and designed like Annie Sloan’s” for less. Big waste of $$. On my next project, I used that brush. It was a fight from the get go. I told my husband thank goodness my first waxing experience wasn’t using that brush. Otherwise, I might have quit using Annie Sloan chalk paint altogether. I get her paint and brushes as Christmas presents. The best gifts, and I’m easy to please.
Thank you for your comment. I'm so glad you see the value in using our brushes. We spent a great deal of time designing them to be the perfect partner for our paints and waxes.
Quite a few people shared that same opinion, but truth is that cabinet, while well constructed, had a finish that was tired and worn in spots and it was just stashed away in the back of a charity shop. It's now found a new life in my studio.
I am amidst painting/repainting all the furniture in our great room. It is all old, repurposed pieces from variety of sources, in variety of styles. Do you have suggestions about designing and living with a room full of painted furniture.
What are the procedures for maintainability? If it got chipped, how would the paint be applied? Would the wax around the chip, first need to be removed? Also how could be be repainted in the future?
I wanted to paint my brown wooden table top since the drawer and table legs are black. If i used chalk paint, do i need to do two rounds of paint, and will the wax completely seal the paint since an office desk is one you use every day...
Ms Annie can you please give me advice on your chalk paint for veneer furniture? I bought this bedroom set that apparently is all veneer and I’m unsure how to fix it all up. 🥲 Will your chalk paint and big mama burrs help with odors in veneer? And on the inside of the drawers too?
I’d love to try this but I have a dark mahogany bedroom suite I want to paint , including the sleigh headboard and foot board. Are you sure I don’t need to sand and prime and if that’s the case I will just go for it !
You don't need to sand and prime. However, because your furniture pieces are made from mahogany, you may experience some bleed through, this can be common when using any water-based paint over mahogany. It's best to do a small test patch first. If you notice any pinkish stains appearing in your paintwork, then simply seal the wood by wiping on one or two coats of clear shellac, a non-toxic sealer that will block the stains. Don't worry, this is quick and easy to do, shellac dries quickly and you can soon get to the fun part ... painting!
I have brown laminate kitchen cupboards they are not shiny and would love to paint them white would it be preferably to do a light sand first thanks so much
Love watching YT videos using Annie Sloan products. I'm off to buy my first bucket of paint from my local stockist here in Stockholm, Sweden. My questions: Is it possible to use something more durable such as polyurethane to seal a dining table that will be in constant use or will the wax be sufficient/advisable? Would be grateful for an answer. Thanks
Is it ok to.use chalk paint for the legs of furniture, tables, chairs , inside of cupboards,. Is it durable for fuemrniture with lots if wear and tear?
I have a coffee table painted in French Linen and waxed. There are now marks and scratches on the table) cups, trays and keys) Can I re paint and wax again , will it cover completely? Thanks
Thank you for this video. I’m trying to decide what paint medium to use for a small drop leaf table. Does the wax have to be reapplied every 6 mos.? If so, why. I watched a video where the demonstrator said that this was a downside yo chalk paint. Thank you for your response in advance.
Hello, our Chalk Paint Wax does not need reapplying, one coat will suffice! If it's a particularly high traffic area, such as a kitchen table, you could reapply after a couple of years if you felt the need to. However in the majority of circumstances, one coat of Chalk Paint Wax will seal your piece for years to come. It's worth noting the curing time, where the wax fully sets, is between 5-21 days, so be careful of your piece during this time. More information can be found on our website: www.anniesloan.com/product/waxes-and-finishes/clear-chalk-paint-wax/ and on our fact sheet: www.anniesloan.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/annie-sloan-chalk-paint-fact-sheet-uk.pdf Hope this helps.
Hi Annie, really enjoyed your video, it's so relaxed and inspirational. I have used your guide but I have found that the paint finish is very patchy as the wax (clear Rustoleum) is uneven and has a white sheen - do you know why? I did what you said and wipe off the excess to no avail. It has left me very disappointed with the finish. Thanks.
I'm so sorry you're are disappointed with your finish. I wish we could help you but we are unfamiliar with the Rustoleum product. If you had used our Chalk Paint® Wax I would advise you to apply another thin coat of wax to even out the finish. Perhaps you could try that with your wax.
Right.... Moved into a new house in February. Every blooming bit of woodwork in the place wZ dark brown paint. Just to get me in, I had a guy whack a load of white satin paint over every bit. No sanding. No prepping. Practically every time you touch any bit of it, the paint falls off. I just cannot face the prepping and sanding to rectify this. Wonder if this is the answer??!
Sounds like your surfaces weren't prepared properly. Whilst our paint would be a lovely solution for your home, I'm afraid you will need to first remove all of the loose paint.
I like hearing that she mentioned not needing to sand, but does anyone know: 1) how long to wait between painting the second coat of paint, 2) when you can lay down the coat of wax, 3) when it's ready to then be buffed and 4) how long or often does new wax need to be applied, if at all. Thanks!
Hello! Chalk Paint® dries and you can apply your 2nd coat in about 20-30 minutes. You can also apply the wax when the paint is completely dry. Apply the wax with a brush or cloth using a sweeping motion, and immediately remove the excess. Buffing is done to add sheen and should be done 24 hours after waxing to allow the wax to dry completely. Applying subsequent coat of wax depends greatly on the amount of use the piece will get. A sideboard or curio cabinet may be good for years, whereas kitchen cabinetry may need additional coats more often. I hope this helps!
How many coats of paint did you do because I didn’t see and I really want to have a full coverage and to be smooth to touch ,I don’t know why in my furniture doesn’t look nice and smooth with chalk paint😔.I want to learn so I can paint my kitchen cabinets.Than you.
I am a beginner to Diy painting and my first try would be with Annie Sloane Chalk Paint. How much paint and chalk wax would I need to paint a queen size bed frame with 2 bed sides and a tall boy?
I am using this as a finish for a kitchen table. After I wax can I put a sealer on it to make it more durable for children (3 of the wild little buggers)?
Hello Ashley! If you prefer a stronger finish, you can use Annie Sloan's water based Lacquer instead of wax! It's a very strong and durable finish! Other sealers will not bond to wax, and will peel up quickly. -Jen at ASI
Just until the paint is dry. An easy test is to place your hand on the surface. If it feels cool to the touch, it's not dry yet, so leave it a bit longer until it feels room temperature.
Ms. Sloan, I have a piece that I've already chalk painted and I want to re-paint :) It needs a little TLC so I'm going to patch and sand a bit. Just unsure if I should clean it BEFORE or AFTER I sand. Can you tell me? Do I even have to clean it if it's a personal piece? It's in my home and not for sale. Thank you!!
I would clean after sanding. That way you can remove any sanding dust that would interfere with the paint adhering to your piece. Most times just dusting will do, but a light clean with a grease-cutting soap and some warm water might be in order if you see oily fingerprints or any other signs of grime or surface debris.
Hi, this paint is all new to me. I bought a storage bench that has a high-gloss brown stain on it. I’d like to paint it white and then I will need to rub on the wax. Because it is a sitting bench, will the wax rub off at all? Thanks
Hi I'm June Taylor and I have never tried Annie's Chalk paint.. I want to try to achieve a French look onto my bedroom furniture with an Old White showing some Gold or even painting the top of the furniture in Gold. Help please.
Hello June, one of my books is entitled 'Creating the French Look' and there are many finishes in there that you can easily achieve with my Chalk Paint®. Many of my colours are inspired by French history and decor and our Old White has a beautiful Old World or European quality to it with its soft, slightly grey undertone. Our Gilding Wax can easily add that metallic touch you are seeking. Please spend some time browsing the various tutorial videos on my website, you'll find them here: www.anniesloan.com/techniques/. I think you'll find them to be a great help.
Only if you didn't like the texture. I painted a mirror frame recently that had been previously crackled and I love the texture showing in my new finish.
I used the Annie Sloan Paint in black and loved how it looked but to save money (never again) I used just regular furniture wax and now it looks aweful. Suggestions? I am ordering your wax after I type this! How do I get the other wax off?
Hi Sherri, I cannot say without knowing or using this other wax myself. You could try applying the Chalk Paint® again over the wax and see if that holds.
Hello. I am painting two twin beds (headboard, footboard, and frames) which are approximately circa 1930. One bed was stripped and refinished, the other had its original finish. The first coat of paint went on fairly easy (as in the video); however, it seems the wood is really soaking up the paint. I put a second coat on one bed and it was a bit more laborious painting the second coat (I felt perhaps the first coat didn’t dry enough). I waited over 8 hours before applying the second coat to the other bed and I am having the same amount of trouble spreading the paint. I am using an Annie Sloan flat brush. The beds will definitely need 3-4 coats based on the results I am seeing so far. Can anyone advise if I am doing anything wrong. I have painted a dresser before using Annie Sloan paint and didn’t have the issues I am having with the beds. It seems I might run out of the quart of paint before obtaining the coverage I am seeking. Any advise will be greatly appreciated.
Hi there, it sounds like the wood may be very porous and is soaking up lots of the paint. For the next layer try watering the paint down a little, I think this should help!
I just used white wax on white chalk paint with old white tshirt and it left bits of fibres on it, I've only done one drawer so far, any suggestions? because I do like the look but not bits of fluff 😭😊
The fluff is coming from your old shirt, so please put it aside and use a different one. It should be easy to remove any fibres. First, try 'scrubbing' them away with a stiffer natural bristle brush. If that doesn't do the trick, then another quick application of wax will help by 'waking up' the underlying layer of wax, making it easy to remove what you don't want.
I rarely sand before waxing. Only when I need to smooth any unwanted lumps and bumps or built up paint in corners and on edges. The wax will fill in any slight imperfections and the wiping action from removing the excess wax smooths the surface. After that, if it's not as smooth feeling as I would like I will lightly go over the surface with a pink sanding pad followed by another light coat of wax.
Annie, you say there is no prep with your paint. There is always prep with whatever paint you’re using. Thoroughly cleaning a piece is the most important part of prepping. You never mentioned that. In many cases if you’re painting over a species of wood that is a known bleeder, it’s important to prime with a shellac based primer to prevent bleeding.
Most times with my paint simply dusting off the surface will do, but on rare occasions I find a surface will require an additional step or two, such as sanding to smooth out the underlying finish or remove surface debris or rust, or sealing a surface with clear shellac to prevent bleed through or block offensive odors.
I absolutely love how down to earth Annie is.
Thank you so much!!
Me too!, but you have to make sure she doesn’t leave off a critical step!
This is just what I need to restore the cabinets my dad made after he came from Germany to USA in 1929. Thank you so much, Annie❤❤

I didn't prime first and it bled underneath
@@amybecker3480 surely this can happen. Usually you can just spot paint over the areas that bleed. That’s what Annie recommends.
I try different paint and I always go back to Annie Sloan.
Do you mind explaining the difference between hers and less expensive brands?

I told my husband thank goodness my first waxing experience wasn’t using that brush. Otherwise, I might have quit using Annie Sloan chalk paint altogether.
I get her paint and brushes as Christmas presents. The best gifts, and I’m easy to please.
Thank you for your comment. I'm so glad you see the value in using our brushes. We spent a great deal of time designing them to be the perfect partner for our paints and waxes.
Annie you are wonderful 💜💜💜
Thank You Rebecca!
It was a good video to see how 2 do it. But i thought noooooooooo that cabinet looks fab as it was
Quite a few people shared that same opinion, but truth is that cabinet, while well constructed, had a finish that was tired and worn in spots and it was just stashed away in the back of a charity shop. It's now found a new life in my studio.
Hi Annie, I'm Christopher Ward , grateful 🙏
I am amidst painting/repainting all the furniture in our great room. It is all old, repurposed pieces from variety of sources, in variety of styles. Do you have suggestions about designing and living with a room full of painted furniture.
What are the procedures for maintainability? If it got chipped, how would the paint be applied? Would the wax around the chip, first need to be removed? Also how could be be repainted in the future?
I wanted to paint my brown wooden table top since the drawer and table legs are black. If i used chalk paint, do i need to do two rounds of paint, and will the wax completely seal the paint since an office desk is one you use every day...
ugh. i didn't have to sand beforehand? that was a waste of a couple hours... glad to know i dont have to go crazy now!
Thank you so much for Sharing!!!
Can I add colour to chalk paint myself if so what paint do you recommend.
Dorothy Bennett why don’t you just buy the color you want?
Ms Annie can you please give me advice on your chalk paint for veneer furniture? I bought this bedroom set that apparently is all veneer and I’m unsure how to fix it all up. 🥲
Will your chalk paint and big mama burrs help with odors in veneer?
Don't worry, this is quick and easy to do, shellac dries quickly and you can soon get to the fun part ... painting!
@@AnnieSloanHome Thank you for the advice !
Beautiful!
I have brown laminate kitchen cupboards they are not shiny and would love to paint them white would it be preferably to do a light sand first thanks so much
Hi Sue, see our video here! ua-cam.com/video/R9LJCt-kwfY/v-deo.html
Thanks
Me too!
My fence has broken down, and I am going to get it repaired. Can I use this on the old wooden pieces to make outdoor signs?
Of course. What a great idea!
Ive just spent ages sanding and priming and i didnt need to!
Oh no!! No need to prime with Chalk Paint ®by Annie Sloan!
@@AnnieSloanHome well you live and you learn!
Hi Annie, can you put the wax onto decoupage to seal it?
Is it ok to.use chalk paint for the legs of furniture, tables, chairs , inside of cupboards,. Is it durable for fuemrniture with lots if wear and tear?
I have a coffee table painted in French Linen and waxed. There are now marks and scratches on the table) cups, trays and keys) Can I re paint and wax again , will it cover completely? Thanks
Haha I'm usually watch disaster movies and end of the world games but this this i like
Can I paint directly on particle board/ MDF?
More information can be found on our website: www.anniesloan.com/product/waxes-and-finishes/clear-chalk-paint-wax/
and on our fact sheet: www.anniesloan.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/annie-sloan-chalk-paint-fact-sheet-uk.pdf
Hope this helps.
Whilst our paint would be a lovely solution for your home, I'm afraid you will need to first remove all of the loose paint.
awesome.. second coat of paint you let dry ?
Yes, thanks!
Does chalk paint work on metal furniture too?
You have such a wonderful energy about you
Thank you. I am very fortunate to do what I love, thanks to people like you!
New subscriber! Thanks for inspiring!!!
Thank you!
Hello Bhamini, you will probably need 2 liters to complete the job.
Annie I wished your products were more assessable in Minnesota.
Sorry to hear that Tamara :( have you looked online? Some of my Stockists sell online too.
Ok I will try that. Thank you.
-Jen at ASI
Hi Annie, I like your video. How long do I have to wait in between coats?? Please let me know.
Just until the paint is dry. An easy test is to place your hand on the surface. If it feels cool to the touch, it's not dry yet, so leave it a bit longer until it feels room temperature.
Love it thank you Annie
Thank you so much! Hopefully you feel inspired to paint.
Adoro😚 love it😚😍
Annie can I use your paint on a block foundation
I love your tutorials i have a question can i use chalk paint on superwood without sanding it first. Thanks
If you are asking about SupaWood, which is a type of MDF, then yes you can.
@@AnnieSloanHome thanks so much Annie. God bless
Thank you ! :)
Do I use this wax if I paint my banister railings? Using the black chalk paint.
Yes!
Hi, this paint is all new to me. I bought a storage bench that has a high-gloss brown stain on it. I’d like to paint it white and then I will need to rub on the wax. Because it is a sitting bench, will the wax rub off at all? Thanks
Hi Kim, no it won't, the wax will protect it. It will take up to 2 weeks to cure fully so be careful during that time.
thank you!
Love it!!!!
How long do you let the first coal dry?
Annie would you sand a dresser if it was crackle painted years ago/
Annie, what if you’ve already waxed your piece and you want to paint it over? Do you need to remove the wax before re-painting?
You don't! As long as you are repainting with our Chalk Paint®, there is no need to remove any wax.
Annie Sloan I love you!! So happy to hear that and thank you for responding, it is greatly appreciated!
Does this work on laminate?
I just used white wax on white chalk paint with old white tshirt and it left bits of fibres on it, I've only done one drawer so far, any suggestions? because I do like the look but not bits of fluff 😭😊
The fluff is coming from your old shirt, so please put it aside and use a different one. It should be easy to remove any fibres. First, try 'scrubbing' them away with a stiffer natural bristle brush. If that doesn't do the trick, then another quick application of wax will help by 'waking up' the underlying layer of wax, making it easy to remove what you don't want.
Did u sand before you waxed? So many blogs say you have to
I rarely sand before waxing.
