One of the best headphone review I've seen in a long time. Thanks Damir.

I’ve been using these for around 5 months. I agree with nearly everything you say... except one point, you emphasise that these aren’t the phones for listening to everything. I’d agree in terms of recreational listening, but these are pro level mixing and mastering headphones. This is why the stereo field is so wide (that and the fact that open backs are wider anyways). In the mixing scenario you want neutrality all of the time, so that you aren’t over emphasising in the process... this goes for all genres of mixing. Later on you go to other “coloured” headphones to tweak those bits that may need more emphasis but that’s what these are designed for, high precision mixing :) I get that my application isn’t what this review is aimed at but I just thought I’d chip in for a little extra clarification, awesome review!

I've had them for a week. Today I went to a HiFi store where my friend works. I tested them on a hi end DAC and Amp, and compared to HD600, HD660s, HD800 and Bayerdynamic DT 1990. And...at least when it comes to stage and separation they were beaten only by HD800. Unfortunately we have found some weird resonances in them on one recording with low African drums. We changed channels - the "dirt" went to the other channel so it's not faulty driver (unless both failed the same way). And that sheds light on why they are not so popular. There were some measurements published on the internet showing their high THD. Well - if that wasn''t audible - it'd be fine, but it's clearly audible. it's a pity, as apart from that one flaw they are really great

I have these they are great for mixing.
I do think they have a little too little bass.
That is fixed with putting a few cotton balls in each ear pad and does not hurt the perfect highs and mids
    .
When new, the mids can be a little jarring on percussive sounds, but that mellows out over time.
This is probably the most neutral headphone you can buy for mixing.
The sound stage is not as wide as my other open backs though.
    But more realistic.
The cables are proprietary which I hate, and quite flimsy.
And breaded solid after market and balanced ones are ridiculously expensive.
Pads are super comfortable and the lightweight is great.
    Solid metal construction.
One bad part is the headband padding is extremely cheap and glued on.
Shure can do better in that one area, and include a better braided cable
This sound is exceptional with any LG quad dac phone, or amp dac combo they are worth it.

Good review; thank you. The 1840 is excellent for classical and jazz listening. It is also worth pointing out that Dekoni Audio have brought out two alternative pads for these 'phones; a 'suede' and a 'leather' pair.
These are well worth purchasing as they alter the sound signature and are way more comfortable that the Shure earpads.

Nitpicker...This was the exact review I was looking for!... As a Voice Over artist I was on the market to get a shockingly set of neutral headphones for mixing my VO's on the road. After reading tons of reviews on Sweetwater and Adorama of others saying they have been able to complete a mixing/mastering session on these headphones and they translate over to monitors with little to no tweaking necessary I decided to hit UA-cam to check out some reviews. I came across your review and based on the information I have chosen to commit to these headphones as I need the portability of headphones with the neutrality of studio monitors. Great Review! and as a fellow content creator I wish you nothing but success on your channel!

In terms of bass, I have been listening to a radio station called Deep House Radio (hence a lot of bass...) recently and using these SRH1840s the quality of the bass I find is outstanding and I can listen for long periods without fatigue. I recently replaced my SE535s with the SE535 ltds which I find are of a similar balance (bit more bass and treble than the SE535s) but these have the edge. Note that I was driving them from my ipad pro but had to switch to using an audioquest dragon cobalt as these phones were that revealing, but I am really very happy with the combination - very neutral and smooth and none fatigueing.

I have been able to drive these with a smartphone, so I don't think that an amp is necessary, although it is definitely recommended. I really love the sound of these though, the bass volume seems just right, and the level of detail is a huge upgrade over my previous headphones.
Love your reviews! keep it up

    • @casualmime2792
      @casualmime2792 5 років тому +2

From what I understand the issue is while the sensitivity is high, meaning a smartphone will give you volume, any frequencies requiring more energy would rendered with less clarity and accuracy. Like my smartphone can get my HD 650s up to more than enough volume, it just sounds off.

Great review. Have one since day one and still enjoy it as a daily desk driver. There are "better" and more expensive headphones out there but these can be used for both mixing and sound enjoyment to a great degree. Carpenter Brut kicks ass in these matched with a good amp :)

That's what I thought the point was to be neutral why do people always want more. and remember that these earphones are made to be revealing so if your getting any harsh high's it's cause the mix it self was probably equalized to death in the high's so a lot of times it's probably just the mix it self not the thing your listening on.

I had the Amiron homes for about two weeks and had to return them cause they were very fatiguing to my ears.
would these be a good alternative for me?
they would be used for gaming(csgo etc) and very varied music everything from compressed videogame music to jazz.
nvm sounds like they sounded bright and harsh on vocals?
the more reviews I read/watch the more confused I get as to what headphone would suit me.
buying headphones in the 300-800 is way too hard.

Hi, thanks for a very valuable and informative review. I'm about to purchase a pair as they seem ideal. Can I ask, what would be the consequence of trying to drive them from my MacBook Pro given their impedance and sensitivity? The impedance seems OK, but 96DB sensitivity seems low. Would it just be a volue issue, or are they going to sound poor? I don't mind buying an outboard amp but just wondered. I would not wan to drive them from a phone.

What did you drive those with for the review? Because when I tried them out lately with only my LG V20 my initial thought was that it was very bass-heavy compared to Sennheiser HD700 for example without sacrificing detail and clarity. I deemed it a very swiss knife for everything. And a clear winner in this price range. You have to get to Sennheiser HD800 to get clearly better sound, but still thinner bass compared to SRH1840.

    • @runetech
      @runetech 6 років тому

Well, I consider the V20 quad Dac very neutral. It is a bit weaker in driving bass than for example my ifi micro iDSD Black Label (Which I hadn't brought that time), but as long as the V20's power is enough, it isn't very far behind. Then I am not going to even start to try and compare it to any closed or semiclosed set of headphones. I only use those types in the studio for practical reasons. There need to be big planar drivers to get even near close to closed headphones bass reproduction, which almost always is WAY to heavy in my experience. My point is that when comparing the 1840 to similar sets, you need to go to HD700 and T70 and the likes, and it will outperform in pretty much anything, especially bass reproduction.

Now I would like a pair of open headphones for mastering/reference and possibly mixing. I have nailed it down to Sennheiser hd 600 and these shure 1840 because I read that these have a very neutral sound.

@@TheNitpicker Billy Castaneda I don't really think you need powerful bass with metal music. My complaints for ages is that the most popular headphones have too much bass for metal (literally gave away my HD 449s because it can't do metal, DT 880s were massively disappointing)...what you need for metal is instrument separation and very tight bass. (If you play instruments in a metal band, you will hate powerful bass)

Shure 1840 vs HD600/650 for classical music or fps gaming?

    • @Fulano.de.Tal.
      @Fulano.de.Tal. 4 роки тому +6

You can't go wrong with those three, they each are directed to one preference (with a cost naturally).
The one that I can say is more fit for varying sounds, would be the Shure 1840.
Here is why, the 1840 is the least colored, but the one aspect in which it is colored is in the high frequencies, which is a plus and negative. The plus is that this additional focus on the highs allows the sound stage to widen a bit more and allows imaging positioning to be better. The negative however, is that the highs can be fatiguing to hear, they can hurt the ears (not screechy, the highs are well defined, just about 3 or 4 or so decibels too high).
For classical music, you can more easily pinpoint where the instruments are coming from, and if the sound is meant to sound a bit distant - it will sound a bit distant (soundstage). The important disclaimer is that because classical music tends to favor high notes, this will be more tiring on the 1840 since it is already high focused. But, cello classical music seems to be less tiring than violin and upper notes of piano music. Male vocals are also not as tiring, but some female vocals can be more fatiguing.
The almost tied runner-up would be the HD650 because it gives music a very warm and smooth delivery of sound, a buttery luxury presentation, you won't find these fatiguing at all, you can listen all day. The clamping force is stronger on the head, but because the earpads are soft, it isn't hurting, it will simply surprise you, but after a few minutes you will be ok. The imaging and soundstage isn't as much as the the 1840.
The Shure has much more comfortable earpads. If you lower the highs with EQ, the 1840 no longer is fatiguing at all, you can listen all day, but you also lose the soundstage and imaging. (This is why I say the highs are a plus and negative, because if you keep the highs - they hurt a bit, but if you lower the highs - you sacrifice the imaging and soundstage). After EQ, the soundstage and imaging becomes similar to the HD600 & 650.
If you like the luxury sound that is very close to the ears (little to no soundstage, and if you are ok with lacking soundstage), then the HD650 is a perfect fit.
If a little too much highs are ok with you, and you prefer a bit better soundstage and imaging, then the 1840 is a perfect fit.
The low frequencies on the 1840 is the most neutral of the three, although not as tight as the HD600, but with the HD600 the lows are much quieter.
The best thing about the HD600 is that the bass is very tight and this gives it a good sound, but the bass is also very reduced, so they sound like they don't have enough bass. The 600 has the smallest soundstage of the three, the sounds are presented as if they were right next to your ear.
The HD650 has more bass than the HD600, and some people say they would like Sennheiser to make a headphone that is just in between the HD600 and HD650, because the 600 is too light on bass, but the 650 is a little bit too much upper-bass.
Well, the more upper-bass of the 650 is what gives it the smooth buttery presentation, so for me, it isn't too much upper-bass, it feels just right, but I can empathize with those that say it is a tad too boosted.
I was fortunate enough to be able to try out all these three headphones, and they all have their pros and cons (but not many cons, because sometimes the pros are viewed as cons to some people).
Warm and smooth sound that is close to the ears - you will like the 650.
Tight and well controlled bass with the sound extra close to the ears - you will like the 600.
Natural soundstage and more real imaging, with more neutral (least colored) sound, but with a bit too much highs - the Shure 1840 is for you.
Gaming, i am not into software games, i don't know how they would perform for competitive gaming.
Drop.com often sells new HD650's for a reduced price of about 200 dollars (great discount, but they don't accept returns, so if you buy it you can't return it for a refund), and the website Zzounds lets you pay for the 1840 in six payments of 75 dollars,(without needing credit card, but i am unsure if they allow returns on monthly setups). This isn't the fiscally responsible route, but it is very difficult to find someone that has these headphones to try them out before buying them.
I jumped the gun, and got the HD650 for 200, and it was a great buy. I then got the 1840 on a monthly plan, and it was also a great buy.
      I wouldn't return either one.
If you are fortunate enough to find someone to let you try out these headphones, then you'll see why i described them in such ways.

I just got a listen to the 1440 and i think the highs and lows are nice and smooth and non fataguing unlike the hd600 harsh trebble. Would have gotten a pair if i didnt already have the r70x.
    Good recomendation.
Im not sure about metal but for edm the bass is nice and clean and you can really enjoy the bass details

Damir Franc Thank you for your response! I am in search for a headphone for mixing and mastering, budget is not an issue and I want it to be neutral and flat as possible, by flat and neutral I mean no boosted frequencies. Also I need good stereo image. I was looking at focals and seinheisers, beyerdynamics and shures but to be honest I am lost and I would appreciate your suggestion,
      Thanks in advance!

I like your objectivty (because that's what it is, and it is not even difficult) about the HD600. Its hype is irrational and mindless, and aside from what you mention, one notices even worse shortcomings, like a flabbiness in certain background sounds which are delivered cleanly by other headphones, even cheaper ones (since it's way overpriced anyway, but that's how Sennheiser rolls, sending their useless toys into the direct competition instead). And a muddiness...

Totally agree on the statement’s of the hd600, which is why I sold the hd600 long time ago and just ordered today the Shure 1840 hoping it will play things more cohesively. I will update how they sound here once I get them, will see if they are a step up.

I had a couple of weeks with the Shure’s and while they are a little sparkly in the treble I find them to be very good for mixing, as they translate really well onto my Neumann KH310’s monitors. I also use Sonarworks and they become even better, flattening out the frequencies. They lack a bit of punch, but there’s no muddiness and actually I made my songs more punchy thanks to them lacking in that aspect. I always wanted neutral or actually a better word is flat sounding headphones to do better mixes. All in all I’m quite happy with them.

@@MichalMikulskiMM Are you still happy? I've been wasting hours of my time for 15 days wanting to see if I can find something better than my 1840 shure and I'm not sure whether to abandon the search because I don't know if there is something flatter. I also have K120 and K310,

@@nakiradams Hey! After a year with them, I actually sold them not so long ago. The problem with the Shure is the bass. Too much distortion there as I read a article about them from sonarworks. I must agree, it did not help to mix bass, because of that. I think that an upgrade would be an Audeze lcd-x creator package, or massdrop x focal elex. Those two sound really nice.
