    ive been using these for 3 years as my sole over-ear monitors. the lack of low end is infinitely frustrating and i am looking at picking up a closed back dt770 to accomodate this. Outside of that, these headphones are absurdly accurate and the stereo imaging in particular is absolutely insane

      DT770 is a good option to monitor low end. Bass response is not excessive so their sound profile shouldn't clash is a disruptive way with the 1840s. Hope it works out well, Cheers!

    A shop here in Cork has them for 449Euros.. Roughly 465bucks. They would be solely for playback of electronic music production music. Highly detailed layers of instrumentation. I wouldn't be overly disappointed in lack of bass, I'm sure I could boost it anyway. I am excited about soundstage. I've only ever listened with Sony Xm3 cans!.
    Oh yes.. You're review was honest and clear. Very good job thanks.

      Thanks and I'm glad to help out! Imaging and soundstage with these cans is among the best I have used and imo these far outperform their price, and 449 is a good price for these. You can absolutely create well balanced mixes with detailed staging of instruments using the 1840s that will translate well to a variety of playback devices.

    • @askdrtk
      @askdrtk  9 місяців тому

      Glad you enjoyed the review. They are known for some distortion in lower frequencies at loud listening levels, but a good headphone amplifier with excess headroom can help to reduce this phenomenon. I will say I don’t listen to them loud enough for distortion to be an issue, but I also don’t use them for mixing HH or EDM where sub bass is often higher than other genres.

      Glad to help out! While I haven't used them personally, your monitors are well known to produce very natural, accurate sound. I went through the same thing a few years back when I was looking for headphones that would fit in with my workflow to compliment my Genelec 8040Bs, also very accurate and neutral monitors. After trying several at the time, including DT990 pro, DT1990 pro, AKG K701, and others, I ended up going with Sennheiser HD600. I found I could move between the 8040Bs and HD600s when I needed to be out of my studio space and mixes translated very well between the two. I must say the Shure 1840s in this video are also excellent. The slight boost in higher frequencies is not enough to give me trouble moving back and forth and I even find it helpful in exposing additional detail without being harsh or fatiguing at all. I also have a set of Audio-Technica R70x I have been testing for a while (review coming soon) that would definitely be a contender for neutral/accurate headphones. All in all though, I keep going back to my HD600s as I am yet to find anything that is as seamless moving between my Genelecs and headphones. This is why the HD600 remain my recommendation for accurate headphones used for critical listening. For the genres you are working in, you will also find mixes made or referenced on the HD600s will translate very well. (My biggest issue now is getting used to the ADAMs I setup in my UA-cam space...they have a nice wide sweet spot, but the crossover frequency range is taking a bit to get used to for me). Sorry for the long response, but I hope this helps out!

      I’ve been looking into the NDH 30’s by Neumann. Bit pricey I must admit but so many people review them so well so could be a long term investment.

      What do you know about them if anything?

    • @askdrtk
      @askdrtk  Рік тому

      I had a chance to try them out and they are at least as good as any set of open-backs I have tried. Comfortable, top quality build, and outstanding response, soundstage, and imaging - all based on the criteria I mentioned earlier, transition as seamless as possible between headphones and monitors. I would say they are a very good long term investment. (Makes me think I should get another set in and do a full review).

    i don't know what to buy between these and neumann ndh30 .

    • @askdrtk
      @askdrtk  Рік тому +1

      Having used both, to my ears the ndh30 have an edge on soundstage, but it is questionable if it is enough to justify the price difference. The srh180 perform like they are $1k imo. Bigger pads do not necessarily equal bigger image, the tuning of the ear cups combined with the placement and angle of the drivers have more impact on image in my experience. Hope this helps out.

      The final result is that with all of 3 models i have almost the same result (compared in volume note that beyer are more closed than a real open one) so with eq i choose HD600.
      Without yes ndh30 are better but for a flat response 300€ are enough and i didn't have any improvement with ndh30.

      HD600 has been my goto headphone for years and I am yet to find anything that makes me want to change. I do use a number of other headphones for referencing and of course tracking that I really like. This is not to say others such as Beyer, Neuman, Shure, AT, AKG, etc. are not good choices as they all make excellent headphones, it is simply that I have learned the HD600 very well for so long that I haven't seen enough to be gained for me personally by changing. I like your suggestion for a cf band...

    • @askdrtk
      @askdrtk  Рік тому +2

      The Celestee are a closed-back design with considerably more clamping force and weight vs the open-back SRH1840. If you prefer some additional emphasis in the lower frequency range you may prefer the Celestee. Listening environment is also a consideration with the Celestee providing far superior isolation vs the SRH1840. Aside from this, it also depends on your preferred genres of music or if you listen to spoken word. For bass heavy genres you may prefer the punchy bass of the Celestee whereas for orchestral music the srh1840 really shine. I hope this helps out.

    I'm curious as to how these stack up to the Sennheiser HD 600, would you say the 1840s are better?
    I don't really own any of them but have heard that the HD 600 is the most neutral open-back you can get. I plan on owning an HD 600 throughout my music journey but would want to know from you if you think the 1840s are a better deal or if you have any mixing headphones in mind that you would recommend that would be great too.

    • @askdrtk
      @askdrtk  Рік тому +5

      Great question! I have been using the HD600 for years and find them to be exceptionally neutral (not perfect in the higher frequencies) with very good imaging and soundstage. To my ears, the SRH1840 have an edge when it comes to mid-high detail and both imaging / soundstage (which is saying a lot), but as always the physics of our hearing dictates that this is somewhat subjective. Overall I would give the SRH1840 an edge over the HD600, but they are more expensive vs the HD600. When it comes to mixing, once you get used to either, in all but the most critical situations where instrument separation is paramount (orchestral), the value of the HD600 remains compelling. For mastering applications, I would go with the SRH1840.

    Are these headphones better than the best AKG headphones? But they cost more than 400$, right?

    • @askdrtk
      @askdrtk  Рік тому +3

      The K712 Pro and K812 have difficulty resolving forceful higher frequencies and can sound harsh to my ears. This is disappointing to me as they otherwise are very musical. The SRH1840 (at one-third the price of the K812) do not struggle to resolve frequencies and provide an equally exceptional imaging and soundstage experience imo. While not their top of the line model, the K702 provide the best challenge to the SRH1840 imo. The K702 are a very competent reference headphone and while imaging and soundstage is superior to the K240 models, the K702 cannot keep up with the SRH1840 in that category. Keep in mind the K702 are about $200 usd less than the SRH1840, so that can justify some comprises in performance. In the $500 usd price range, the SRH1840 are a very compelling option that compares well against headphones costing two and three times the price.

      @@askdrtk But what about the durability of AKG headphones?
      Today I have found pretty much complaints about that they break easily (at least the K371), about wires getting too loose or broken, about one part staying lower or something like that.
      I heard these especially about K371 and K702. There are true claims?
      Now I'm thinking at buying Philips Fidelio X2 or X3, having both great quality sound and the headband which seems the best, most durable.
      But what about their durability?
      Also, I take into consideration the JBL Tour One, Sony MDR-1AM2 and Sony WH-H900N.
      I spend 3-6 hours per day, in last 2-3 days, from afternoon to evening, searching for the really best headphones under 250$ from both sound quality and durability pov's.
      These 6 headphones seem to be the really best, including AKG K182 but which is also not very strong when it comes to durability or not?
      I have found a very nice comparing site and you can compare 7 headphones at once.
      The link: versus.com/en/akg-k182-vs-akg-k702-vs-jbl-tour-one-vs-philips-fidelio-x2-vs-philips-fidelio-x3-vs-sony-mdr-1am2-vs-sony-wh-h900n

    • @askdrtk
      @askdrtk  Рік тому +2

      AKG are fine for durability with the exception of K361 / K371 which have known issues. Otherwise, I have found AKGs to hold up well in studio use. Currently on sale for $279usd, the Shure SRH1440 would be an outstanding choice. They have rich bass without being hyped, superior detail in both mids and highs, and outstanding soundstage / imaging. If you can get a set of these, it will be a significant upgrade from the K77, lines up well with what you have described as your preferences, and will work well with your setup. The SRH1440 are on the larger side, but they are very comfortable for longer listening sessions. For me, headphone burn in a medium high levels for at least 24 hours with a variety of genres gradually becoming for bass intensive. (I play a mono signal from my DAW and invert the phase of one side so I don't have to hear them while burning in.

    • @ddf0dr1v3r2
      @ddf0dr1v3r2 Рік тому

      @@askdrtk Thanks so much for the replies.
      But now I've found some really reasonable appearing videos which say that burning in is not very effective (and shouldn't be), that it's mostly psychological.
      That, if the difference is really big after just 24-48 hours of burning in (or even 50-100 hours), then the quality of the materials, especially of the membrane, might not be that high, because of getting fatigued too fast.
      It makes sense that, even after lots of years of usage, the quality of the headphones shouldn't change more than very significantly, maybe just "minimum substantially", if you don't use them too hard for too many times, if the materials are really good.
      I'm not so sure of the quality changing of my K77 headphones at the very beginning, because I've used first some cheap Beats which broke after 1-2 years (bought from the same store so they were probably genuine also, but too cheap), and the bass was so ridiculously inflated that only after 2-3 years I started to feel the bass properly on my K77.
      So...... this experience might prove that burning in is mostly psychological, at least in half of cases, as it seems.
      Yet, I kinda feel an improvement on my K77 in last 2 years especially, a significant one, especially when it comes to bass.
      But, I've edited some war or fight game soundtracks with pretty much bass from cellos especially, and now I noticed that I didn't edit them with as much extra bass as I should!
      I edited them in Audacity, by using the right ratio of bass and treble (by many attempts) and also by using Matrix Spatializer option (the only one which offers me the effect I desire).
      It's like the membranes of my K77s are more and more rigid, but the bass is better than before if I edit the songs properly (this being the improvement, yeah most likely not being a real improvement).
      So........ maybe it's just my ears being too used with lots of very vibrating very deep very natural but not too strong bass.
      Or..... my eardrum isn't vibrating as great as just several years before? Rather, maybe it's a normal fact.
      Or maybe I just raised my standards a lot more in short amount of time, maybe now I'm at the right level of (pretty strong) bass I should hear.
      Anyways, just like any mechanical system with mechanical components, the break in should be as varied as possible and not too strong.
      The same videos say this also, that it's not recommended to start using headphones too hard, with too high volumes for too long and too much hard bass exposing.
      I just hope my new headphones won't have too rigid materials, heh.
      If the bass is very strong since first hours of using the headphones then the membrane might be not suitable for too hard playing in the future, good aspect to keep in mind.
      Ugh, damn, I don't even remember why exactly I wanted to write so much.
      Maybe I had an important idea to tell, I don't know, pfff.
      Sometimes I just have to write a lot, even if I express the most effective possible.
      Sometimes many details have to be not omitted.
      Heh, I think I remember, maybe I just wanted to share you my experience just for your own sake, maybe it will help.
      When I feel better I actually write even a lot more than a lot, the ADHD symptoms are intensifying, even though I don't have that strong Hyperactivity and Attention Deficit.

    These phones are very good, but they have a fatal flaw and I was forced to return them.
    The cable is extreemely stiff and not malleable.. it does not soften over time either. The slightest tap on the cable or movement of your head whilst listening to music and you will hear every click and clack of the cable (which transfers to the ear cups) and, if you are listening to quiet music, you WILL hear it.
    As the cable is specific to Shure headphones (with proprietary connectors on the ear cup end) it cannot be substituted with anything else that I am aware of. If so I would have kept them.
    I am a studio musician and use a ton of Shure products, but this is an absurd design flaw on the part of Shure.
