That was very cool. I've always wondered how the different ratios were achieved. Simple, yet remarkably complex piece of engineering, explained very well. Thanks!
@tnphysics Hi, the input shaft connects to the input ring gear. The K1 clutch connects the front planet carrier and rear ring gear when it is applied in 2nd, 3rd, and 4th. The B1 brake, when applied, holds the F1 sprag which is connected to the input sun gear in first gear and 5th gear.
@durin23 Hi, good point. These transmissions are for training purposes only and are never going to be used in a real vehicle. I could not figure out a way to perform this demonstration without the screws in the slots of the housings.
Thank you very much for the technical review. I was hoping that you would comment about the pros and cons. Very informative. NAG 1 means New Automatic Gearbox. There are only a few issues I know of: 1.) water seeping through due to the dipstick O ring (white) which hopefully has been replaced. 2.) Chrysler recommends a triple flush which I have never performed. I would very much appreciate your views relating to the aforesaid. Thank you again.
About 1:28...when he got to "annulus"-???...I nodded off into an impressed stupor. I started to think about why we listen to people we don't understand. @WeberAuto great video, mercedes never had any real issues with that trans untill mopar started using it .. we had a recall for them with water leaking in from the fill tube, lol chrysler said to us to flush it and hope for the best . 90% of the time i ended up doing a compleat teardown and installing new clutches and seals :-/ ans flushing the coolers , great job, keep the vids comming .
+nicholas elias Yes most Benz after 2007 have the 722.9 7 speed also know as the NAG2. 722.6 is Now a quite old design, I saw the first on in a 1997 E320 PDI back when I was still a snot nosed punk. When I left Benz the 722.9 was the main Trans we were dealing with.
Anybody have info on building a stronger NAG1 as Paramount wants almost 5k for their best/strongest model and I'm considering a Jeep SRT8 and getting a turbo kit, 2006-2010
I have a 2007 Jeep Wrangler it’s making a whining noise as I accelerate to go and hear like a whining like sound almost like a vacuum leak or like muffler loud sound but had it all checked and it’s nothing to do with muffler system at all. Need help
what is the maximum trans temp for this transmission? My 2017 Wrangler has this trans and I pull a small camper (2800 lbs) and don't want to over heat the trans!!
I have this transmission in a 2013 Chrysler 300 S and in 2nd gear it's making a turbo like whistling noise that increases in pitch with the rpms, it stops when it hits 3rd gear. Brought it back to the Dealer and they have had it there over a month trying to figure out what that 2nd gear sound is. They now told me they're going to replace my transmission with a re manufactured one but that's on back order. Any idea what might be making that 2nd gear turbo like sound? Thanks
There could be several causes: fluid level, worn bearings, worn gears, a solenoid problem. It sounds like a gear noise to me. The fact that it quits in 3rd gear is a good diagnostic clue. I would figure out what internal transmission part(s) stopped rotating in 3rd gear? That is how I would diagnose it. Best wishes.
I have an 06 Dodge Charger with about a hundred thousand miles on it I'm getting a vibration or shudder at low RPMs when maintaining speed if I shift it and manual mode it goes away it also shutters when I'm slowing down to stop anybody have any suggestions it shifts fine but after it runs through all the gears and I'm just cruising it starts to shutter I change the fluid twice and put a new filter in I also added friction modifier but nothing helped it it almost feels like the torque converter isn't disengaging could it be that TCC solenoid for the torque converter I just find it strange that when I shift it in manual mode it goes away
Manual mode bypasses the one-way clutches in the transmission. Chances are high that one of them are slipping. they cannot slip in manual mode because an additional clutch is applied to perform the same function as the one-way clutch. It sounds like you have a serious failure in the works. Best wishes!
jt12000, what are you going to do or did to remedy this issue? I also have a 2006 charger with the exact issue, if you repaired it what did it cost total please and thank you....@@newwavepressure6478
@@filomartinez247 i still have it its got to be the torque converter or the trans im goin to buy a factory remanufactured trans and now converter i flushed the trans 3 time with a new filter and the friction modifier nothing worked i did engine mounts just to make sure it wasn't that i had my overhauled like 2 years ago cost me lik 1500 if i had to do it over i would have put a new one in and did it right the first time and i wouldn't have the prob now so if u have the money go with a factory remanufactured can just spend too much money trying to figure out what it is by the time you put a torque converter and you have to drop the tranny anyway and might be the clutch packs or bad sprag or bad valve body and just a remanufactured valve body is about 800 good luck man iv bin just shifting it in manual mode after it gos thru all the gears and when im about to stop

Hey I have an 05 chrysler 300c with the nag1 transmission. It will not move at all in forward or reverse. I pulled one of the trans cooler lines at the bottom of trans, started car and have no fluid flow. Trans fluid is where it should be.
Did you see if there was cooler flow in gear? If there is no flow, but the fluid level seems fine, there is an internal problem with the filter or pump.
Amazing demonstration! Big thanks for you. It's very interesting and useful! Now i know that clutches are infinite use for. all that can be broken is fucking hydratransformator! damn it
+Omar Mares This 5-speed automatic was behind V8 engines. I think the Charger V6 got the ZF 8HP45 8-speed automatic. I could be wrong, but it should be easy to tell if you have a 5-speed or an 8-speed. Thanks for watching!
The A580 was used behind the 3.6 engine through 2014. The 845RE was optional. In 2015, the 845RE became standard on all retail V6 cars, and the 890RE on the retail V8 cars. Hellcats use the 895RE. Charger Pursuits (all) use the A580 through 2018, and will switch to the 845/895RE by 2020.
My car doesn't have a second revers position on the shifter. It has a Button(switch) that allows the car to take off in second gear in both forwards and revers directions. You showed in your video how the 1 gear in revers is achieved through the manipulating of the clutches, how is the second gear in revers achieved through the manipulate of the clutches?
Hi, I do not know where you found that information, but I do not think it is correct. Every ZF transmission I have ever seen clearly is marked with ZF casting markings and ID tag. This transmission is clearly marked with Mercedes casting markings. Please provide your source. Thank you.
The Mercedes 5-spd is their version of the ZF model. As is the Chrysler A580. Mercedes does not build this transmission for Chrysler, at least after 2008. Chrysler first acquired manufacturing rights from ZF, and later purchased the design from ZF, and produces the unit at their Kokomo 2 plant in Indiana. From 2011+, it is 100% Chrysler.
Hello sir, is there any manual version of this transmission? I have a Dodge Magnum RT with the NAG1 and I am trying to find an easy way to convert it to manual. I know its a long shot!! Thanks
Had this transmission in my 2013 300 replaced with a remanufactured one. Now when it’s cold(not warmed up), when I put it in gear it’ll make a “swishing” noise. If I put it back in park or neutral it stops. After I drive it a bit it stops making that noise putting it in gear. Seems to runs ok but the “swishing “ noise when cold, is that something I should worry about? Thanks

Try pulling the gear selector into the low or 1st position and see if the vehicle will move forward.

Removed filter. Pretty dirty. Fluid is pretty dark and has a burnt smell.
No metal shavings or chunks. Car sat for 3 years not running. Think it was just the filter and fluid?
