I rebuilt on of these in class, and boy was it a nightmare, but it was fun. Automatic transmissions aren’t as difficult as i anticipated. The biggest hurdles I encountered were part placement, part management, and attention to detail. Great video. It helped me brush up on my skills.
I actually *felt* my eyes glazing over as you said all of that... 'Four rotating clutches, 4 braking clutches, 4 one-way clutches, and.....18 check balls?!' :< Ah - the progress of technology. Great work as always of course! :)
I missed my calling for sure because I really like the whole series you do about drivetrains. I'm 66 now so too old to go into a new career, but thanks so much, and BTW without endorsing anything, what would be your preferred daily driver?
I had assumed this transmission was similar to the Aisin TR60SN / 09D 6 speed used in the VW Touareg, but it looks like there are quite a few differences. PS: On VWs, the TCM software coding bit options are the same for every 6 speed Aisin automatic, weather transverse FWD or RWD. Selectable options include displaying the current gear in the instrument cluster while in drive, being able to shift into 2nd while stopped to move off in 2nd, and "hill hold" mode where the trans is shifted into 2nd to use the one way clutch to prevent the vehicle rolling backwards, but still move off from a stop in 1st gear.
Great video! Helpful to see what makes it tick. My 2007 Tundra was showing codes for S2 and SLT solenoids. Got in there and found a burned s2 that failed my tests! I was happy to find the smoking gun, only being a back yard mechanic!
My truck got Not AB60E but light duty version AC60E. I love my AC60E they feel good and i get peace of mind that this will not break down if i change oil regulary
I have a reverse issue.. my sequoia every now and then won't reverse. I've changed fluid and filter.. it stopped for a while then started doing it couple weeks after. Do I need to change all the solenoid responsibile for reverse? I had the p0849 code and p2714 code
+blackericdenice I just made it an on or off switched solenoid with a resistor in series with it to limit the current and keep it from overheating. It works great for dyno testing.
The newer AC60E which I think is only in the 2WD Tacoma is much simpler. It only has half the clutch packs and less valves, etc. Its been made since 2015. I wonder if one has ever broke since then.
Hi WeberAuto. Where would I get the step by step instructions for overhauling the transmission on a 2005 BMW 350d car? Or, at least a list of the sensors in the ENGINE that the ECM of this car uses to manage the transmission ... conceptually, lets say I wanted to rig this car up & spin the crankshaft with an external source (crankshaft sensor working), and allow the wheels to spin freely (speed sensor working), what other sensors would I have to deal with to fool the ECM into up shifting & down shifting the transmission?
Thanks for the suggestion. There are two types of solenoids. On/Off solenoids and Pulse-Width Modulated solenoids. The On/Off solenoids have battery power connected to them and the switch just provides a ground to activate them. The Pulse-Width Modulated solenoids have a 20 Watt 8 Ohm resistor in series with their battery power feed, and then then switch provides a ground to activate them. I hope that helps.
Hi there. How could i find some information about Gearbox used in Toyota Avensis 2.0D 2010 (T27) model ? I will increase torque from 310NM to 450NM. i know the clutch will not suport this big torque output but i`m interested about Gearbox limits. thanks.
Great video from You, excellent as usual. But what happened with the cooler line? I know that you told that it leaks, but why? As I see it flows well..
Hi I have issue with P2714 and P0761 tundra 2008 5.7 I replace those solenoide but still same , I reset computer etc and feel better ,but u think is computer bad or still other solenoide bads??
Can you use ab60f from 07’ to 2020 or is there a difference? My Toyota trans on my 2013’ needs to be replaced can I run a newer model or is there a difference?
Great video John!,,, i live in Australia and am a retired mechanic, i have a 200 series land cruiser v8 tt diesel, equiped with an AB60f trans , i love it but along with many other owners am frustrated that to get into 6th gear i have to be doing 115 km/hr & even then it won't stay "locked" i.e. it will go back to 5th at the slightest incline! our speed limit is mainly 100-110 km/hr!! is there a way to lock in 6th gear say at around 95-100 ks?
Hello sir and thank you so much for all this hard work and the good way to teach i really appreciate it ,, i just have i few questions which i got a little confused with the fourth gear on your video at 14:57 you did for the fifth gear is not it !? .. another question which how can i know which valve control any break or clutch ,, like how PWM valve or S1-SR works with each Break or Clutch .. another one why is SL2 on the first ,second and the third gear does not mentioned on the S4,S5,D(S6)!? Also with B1,B2,B4 ..!? THANK YOU AGING
Thank You Sir .Toyota Land cruiser 100 Series 4.2 Diesel With 8 Pins On Connector Is Shifting Well all Functions Are Goin Good On Smooty Roads .But It Has No Power Even Car Cant Cross Over A Brick In Drive With First Gear . I Think It Oil Pump With Bad Supply Of Oil Or It Coud Be Torque convertor. Any Suggestions Sir ?
Make sure the transmission fluid level is correct and that the fluid is clean. If first gear is the only gear with a problem, it is probably an internal transmission failure. Best wishes
Is the output shaft on a 2wd same length as 4wd transmission? I want to convert my 2wd tundra to 4wd. I would much rather just replace the tailend and add transfer case to my transmission than replacing the whole transmission. Is ot possible to do that or do i need to replace the transmission?
I read 1/3 out of every transmission rebuild in the US isn't done correctly. You guys seem like the real deal. What do you think of that Stat and why is it so low
Hello there, Great video. Ive got 2008 Toyota Tundra with 405,000 miles. Engine is strong. The transmission is giving codes P0983, P2714, P0776. It has always slipped a little when cold. My tranny guy wants to just change the tranny and skip the valve body and individual solenoids. He wants $5500 for used tranny with 90,000 miles on it or $3500 to change the valve body which comes with the solenoids. Any suggestions? Thanks, Greg
Brilliant Work...Thank You....I Would Love To Have You And Your Students Work On Any Of My Transmissions Any Day Of The Week With Great Confidence.......
OMG sir you are fantastic ! I really understood all that and I don't have an engineering background. Can I ask: I have a Land Rover Evoque ( 9 gear automatic) with a third gear jerky gear selection. its been back to Land Rover four times and they can't find the problem. End result, they say because the can't find this problem its not there. Admitedly the problem is intermitant but if they are not using a Dyno under load how can they find the problem, this said they drive it for 10/20 minutes but the issue doesn't present itself. Can you give me any questions to ask to to firstly determine they checked what is neccesary and secondly can I ask: if they are not using a Dyno how can they effectively find the problem? Any help would be much apprciated Best regards Rob
I would start with making sure you have the proper fluid level and fluid type. There also may be software updates for the transmission controller. Check with a dealership for updates. Best wishes
I Have a "Sport Shift" or "Shift Mode" in my 07 5.7L Tundra With automatic 2wd trans you speak of....is there a way to override the auto? -What i mean by this question is, sometimes, when i am trying to control my shift points with 'sport mode' or 'shift mode' it just shifts where it wants to instead of where i try to make it shift....?
I have a question, what is happens if applies wrong combination of solenoids.. will destroy gearbox or is protected by a valve in the valve body.. good question...
Traqn Savov Hi, it depends upon the transmission. For the most part there will be no damage. Typically, activating or deactivating the transmission will just result in the wrong gear ratio being selected. There are times when this could cause a customer complaint and possible damage. For example: what if the transmission suddenly downshifted from 4th gear to first gear? the engine could rev up, the tires could momentarily skid as they catch up to the correct vehicle speed.
Traqn Savov There is a tool we use in our shop to prevent that from happening. It's made by Superflow and it's called a SuperShifter. You can see how it works at vimeo.com/45972961
Thanks for your feedback, the SL1 and SL2 solenoids I have look almost identical, but they have different hydraulic ports. I do not think they are interchangeable.

Thanks, it is a very complicated transmission for having only 6 speeds.
Im getting p2714 and p0761 codes and it keeps going into limp mode on my 07 tundra 5.7 4x4 limited. Any ideas?
Thanks!
Thank you very much!
thanks for your expert teaching skills...
I actually *felt* my eyes glazing over as you said all of that...
'Four rotating clutches, 4 braking clutches, 4 one-way clutches, and.....18 check balls?!' :<
Ah - the progress of technology. Great work as always of course! :)
GammaCruxis Thank you, it is a complicated transmission; more so than many others.
Yea but these can easily last over a million miles. So I’m good with it
I missed my calling for sure because I really like the whole series you do about drivetrains. I'm 66 now so too old to go into a new career, but thanks so much, and BTW without endorsing anything, what would be your preferred daily driver?
I am now in a wheelchair and drive a Toyota Sienna van, but I would have an electric car if things were different. Thanks for watching

Would you consider these a solid transmission? My neighbor had to have his rebuilt in his 07 tundra
I thought about making a switch box for a 4L60e to put it n an older car. I was wondering how to control the EPC solenoid.
+blackericdenice I just made it an on or off switched solenoid with a resistor in series with it to limit the current and keep it from overheating. It works great for dyno testing.
WeberAuto I watch someone else trans dyno video and your video make more sense.
The newer AC60E which I think is only in the 2WD Tacoma is much simpler. It only has half the clutch packs and less valves, etc. Its been made since 2015. I wonder if one has ever broke since then.
How would the tow/ haul button work on these transmissions?
How may I join your overhaul class? Id like to become a ab60 specialist.
Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge sir.. I'm a proud automatic transmission rebuilder

prof. Kelly thank you for this educational video.
I just wanna know whose bright idea it was to put 18 checkballs in the valve body.
Samniss Arandeen Thanks for watching, it is a complicated unit.

Thank you!! Very interesting. You sure are smart. I read your resume...
How may miles do these transmissions last? I think this is the same one in my 2009 lexus es350.
Nope, u got a similar unit but not as heavy duty, these are rated at 500 ft pounds of torque
