  • Weber State University (WSU) - Automotive Technology Department - Transmission Lab. Allison 1000 MW7 6-Speed and M74 5-Speed 6-Speed Automatic Transmission Power flow. The Allison 1000 is built by Allison Transmissions, a General Motors owned company. This transmission is typically used in 2001 and newer Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra Heavy-Duty C and K series pickup trucks with the Isuzu 6.6L Duramax engine. This transmission uses a simple planetary gear set to drive a Simpson planetary gear set (common sun gears).
The following summarizes the changes to the Allison 1000 over the years:
(2010 Uprate) MW7 - Strengthened to handle the higher torque capability of the 2011 model year Duramax LGH and LML engines.
4th Generation MW7 - Added 6th gear and other software refinements in 2006. Used with the 2006 - 2010 LBZ, LLY, and LMM Duramax engines.
3rd Generation M74 - Added Solenoid "G" to the valve body to modulate main pressure at an idle to quiet the oil pump and reduce engine idling loads. Used with 2004 - 2005 LB7 and LLY Duramax Engines as well as the 8.1L Big Block Chevrolet Engine.
2nd Generation M74 - Valve body and case changes as well as software refinements to improve shift quality, shift timing, and shift speed. Added "The Sound of Power" VHS video to the glove box to explain why the Allison noises and clunks are good. Used with the 2002 - 2003 model years and the LB7 Duramax and 8.1L Big Block Engines.
1st Generation M74 - The original Allison 1000 installed in the 2001 Chevrolet and GMC Sierra Trucks with the LB7 Duramax engine.
This video helps demonstrate NATEF Task A2.C.10. " Diagnose transmission/transaxle gear reduction/multiplication concerns using driving, driven, and held member (power flow) principles.", a priority 2 task.

Good catch, I forgot to include it while shooting the video. Reverse is accomplished by applying the C3 and C5 holding clutches and driving the rotating clutch housing with the turbine. The reverse gear ratio is 4.49:1. Reverse can be accomplished even if the transmission is unplugged from the electrical system because the default "normally open" or "normal closed" power off state of all the solenoids allows it to happen.

I like your straight-to-the-point way of explaining. The one thing I still do not visualize, is how the clutch packs break and release the drums of the planetary gears and the clutch housing.

Manual transmissions were simpler and separated the drivers from any idiot who could crawl his way behind a wheel, gone are the days when they tested your metal by putting you in a twin stick or a 2 speed rearend truck. Now any idiot is allowed in the large vehicles and they cost thousands to have fixed and there is no chance of doing it yourself, Easily 5 times as many moving parts inside, oh yea you have very little if any control over what gear you in or when, garbage if you ask me, one of my biggest mistakes was buying an Allison in a truck I depended on

Hi, the clutch packs can be used to stop a ring gear, a planet carrier, or even a sun gear; it is dependent upon the transmission design. Clutch packs can also cause gear components to rotate under power. Each set of planetary gears can provide two underdrive gear ratios, direct drive, two overdrive gear ratios, and two reverse gear ratios. Typically there are only one useable underdrive, overdrive, and reverse gear ratios though.

Hi, Good question. No, it would bind up because the C2 clutch turns the P2 ring gear which forces the P2 sun gear to rotate. the P2 and P3 sun gears are connected together with an intermediate shaft. The P2 and P3 gear sets are Simpson style gear sets and are driven by a simple gear set P1. Also, realize that 6th gear is already a double overdrive with a gear ratio of 0.61:1, a 7th gear would be a triple overdrive and could be difficult to utilize.

HI, good question. The C2 clutch turns the P2 carrier and the P3 ring gear as an assembly. The C5 clutch holds the P3 ring gear from rotating. The transmission would lock up if you applied both the C2 and the C5 clutches.

I did get the names mixed up there, sorry for the confusion. There are only 3 planetary gear sets from front to back: P1, P2, P3. There are 5 clutch packs from front to back: C1, C2, C3, C4, C5. C1 and C2 connect power to the planetary gear sets, the C3, C4, and C5 stop parts of the planetary gear sets. C3 stops the P1 ring gear, C4 stops the P2 ring gear, and C5 stops the P3 ring gear. The different combinations of rotating and stopping gear set parts gives us the various gear ratios,

Great video! It's amazing how mechanically simple this transmission is. No sprags/roller clutches, only 2 clutches and 3 brakes. The older 4 and 5 speed automatics seemed to be packed full of bands, clutches and those terribly unreliable one-way clutches. I suppose the all the complexity has moved from the hardware to the software now, since you can just "program" a smooth shift in software, instead of having to figure out how to do it hydraulically or mechanically.

  • @WeberAuto
    @WeberAuto  11 років тому

Hi, there are more differences between the 5 & 6 speed transmissions than the TCM and valve body. There are torque converter, case, clutch pack and piston changes for durability too. True, you can make a 5 speed have 6 speeds, but it is not the same as a true six speed. 6th gear is only a 10% change, hard to justify the cost. To answer your question, don't forget the P1 sun gear is always driven without a clutch by the turbine, this eliminates the potential for additional useable gear ratios.

Following the shifting pattern through all 6 gears, (C1+C5, C1+C4, C1+C3, C1+C2, C2+C3, C2+C4), what would happen if you were to apply C2 and C5 after 6th gear?

+Cobrajr122 Hi, the transmission would lock up because C2 turns the rear two (P2 and P3) sun gears and C5 stops the read (P3) ring gear. Good question. Thanks for watching!

    Hi John,
Thank you for the very informative videos. I've learned so much from watching your videos. I had no idea how an automatic transmission worked before.
One thing that I seemed to have missed in all your videos is about clutch packs. I realize that the steel clutch plates stay fixed with the transmission housing and are squeezed together to apply force to the fiber clutch plates to stop a particular planetary gear set(s) from turning (essentially like brake pads on a rotor). The question I have is ... it seems like there isn't a lot of force exerted on these parts? Is that correct? Otherwise the fiber plates would wear very quickly? Essentially the way I think it works is the power is always looking for the path of least resistance through the different planetary gear sets and clutch packs. In other words, the clutch packs are really only stopping the inertia generated by the weight of the spinning planetary gear set and not engine torque (or minimal engine torque).
I'm trying to also understand how the Aisin Warner AF40 works with regard to clutch packs. The literature describes the shifting of gears being managed by a sophisticated computer program which oversees a clutch-to-clutch actuation. Gear changes are accomplished by one clutch engaging the instant the clutch from the previous gear disengages so I think that would be different than this Allison as there is no "neutral" between shifts - is that correct?

C Collins Hi, check out my video on planetary gear set operation. ua-cam.com/video/5piYEX-jRt4/v-deo.html I cover all of those topics. Get back with me afterwards if you need to. Thanks for watching!

Well done video. What about would happen if you applied the c5 clutch pack after releasing c4 when you were in sixth gear? Would it bind, or would it be another gear?

Thank you! It would seize up and stop rotating. The C5 clutch stops the P3 Ring gear. The C2 clutch rotates the P3 Ring gear.

Okay, I thought that, but wasn't sure. Thanks for the reply

my 02 duramax only has reverse. the gear shift highlight blinks when I give it any amount of throttle once in gear! seems like a pressure issue ? cs
    selinoid issue ?

It could be any of dozens of things causing this issue. You must get someone with a a scan tool to check for trouble codes, then follow the diagnostics for the code(s). Best wishes.
