Really? Because if you google it, the world record for single breath freediving (no tank or air line) is 702ft, and the scuba record is 1090ft. People can literally take a deep breath and dive deeper than what you think the world scuba record is. So who's spreading misinformation?

Active Navy Diver here, I love hearing from an old timer from my community. If he’s ever invited on again you could benefit from a diving consultant to help ask some questions that would get some really good stories out of him.
One of the problems we have is our stories are so hard for the general public to grasp the gravity of so we hold them close to our chest. A couple targeted questions about some of the jobs he did in the water, pranks he pulled on other sailors or memorable parts of training could go a long way

The dream team for me would be Nick, Grandpa, Jack, and Wendigoon. That would be AWESOME! I also love how wholesome Grandpa is, especially knowing everything he's been through and currently going through. He's not bitter or angry, and he's certainly not boring. He's an inspiration to us all, and a reminder to take care of our own loved ones who are getting up there in age. God bless him, and God bless the rest of the crew.

My grandfather was on the Bismarck for a large part of its lifetime as a vessel. It shared a crew rotation with the Prinz Eugen, which is the only reason I exist, since they swapped crews a week prior and he was the Eugen's navigator for the battle where the Bismarck sank. He didn't like talking about it much, but he did say two things about the whole thing. One being that the moment the Bismarck sank, he knew the war was over and that the biggest tragedy about the whole thing was that aside from the political officers to keep the crews in line, nobody had an axe to grind for the regime. Everybody was just trying to get through the whole ordeal alive in the end.
But when you think about stuff like that, where but for a coin toss a few generations ago, you wouldn't even be around...
Man, I was entertained and I had to think during this, too. Really good podcast, guys.

Damn. I just did a mini deep dive on the Bismarck reading your comment. I always thought most of the crew survived, though they suffered heavy casualties.
Not the case. 2200 killed, only 110-116 were pulled from the water alive and became POWs.
Shitty your grandfather was on the wrong side of history, but a compelling life all the same

@@comradeeverclear4063 He didn't really have a choice. He joined the navy during the Weimar Republic because he wanted to see the world and interact with other cultures. From what I know, there was talk about revolt and mutiny during the early days of the war, but when they mixed the SS into crews and you could end up dead in your bed (or, tbh, worse, someone would sit down at lunch with you that you'd barely seen before and *tell you* how your wife was doing back home, name, address and all) for saying the wrong thing, that kind of talk pmuch stopped.

She was with the Bismarck, and escaped, later lost her entire stern and survived, she made the Channel Dash past the British with no damage, survived all of WWII, and then afterwards, she survived TWO NUCLEAR BOMBS and then still was sailing for another FIVE MONTHS and only sank when a small leak couldn't be repaired because she was radioactive

Got to enjoy this episode from a unique perspective- I'm in my 50's, been in the Bar Service Industry for 25+ years & out of the Army for 30+. Most of my contemporaries were fellow Irish bartenders who were between 12-17 years younger than me. I'd wonder why they'd seek my perspective on things or wanted to rehear a certain tale I'd told over a few whiskeys on certain occasions. It didn't bother me- quite the contrary- but I never looked at these times like they were 'Teachable Moments' or 'Words of Sacred Wisdom'. A few of the guys went into the service or worked for local city/state government while I contentedly stayed behind the bar (my primary love). I got to play 'Pappa-Bear' when the bar & waitstaff went out drinking, & to act as the voice of reason & Authority for the rowdier St. Patty's Day Parties. My lil' brother (also a vet, out for 25 years) brought to my attention how much he appreciated my words of advice before he left for basic training (we BOTH went to Leonard Wood). "Bro, you give friends & family the advice they need, not the sugar coated B.S. we ALL got from our recruiters." I liked that answer. Seems my brother got hit with a Wisdom Stick while my back was turned. I LOVED hearing Grnpa mentioning the 'Gaming by Mail' he did in the 70's. I heard about this but thought someone was just pulling my leg. Your guests & Hosts make 'Unsubscribe' must-see viewing for Veterans, Smart Folks, & viewers who just enjoy being entertained. Keep it up! Frmr 55B & 31B, '89-'93.
