The downfall of the Comanche began with the introduction of the revolver back in the 1840's. Captain John “Jack” Coffee Hays, by himself and armed only with a single shot rifled musket and two revolvers took on a small war party of Comanche at Enchanted Rock just north of Fredericksburg Texas. The Comanche had a tactic where they'd sacrafice 3 warriors to get you to shot your 1 musket and two pistol shots, then they'd swarm you. This Texas Ranger captain used that to his advantage, he fired 3 shots, the Comanche then charged him and he unleashed 10 more shots at them. It stunned them so badly they hunkered down waiting to get him in the dark of night. This allowed him to escape up and over Enchanted Rock. I ran into a very good guy who happened to be a sheriff in Virginia back in the late 80s early 90s when I was a teenager. After a guy assaulted my mother he took me aside and told me that in that county they have a lot of hunting accidents and for the first offense it was a $500 fine and they won't take your gun. Then he said "if he come back, if I were you, I would take him hunting in the woods out back".

Archers in movies: '" am too weak to swing a sword, so i picked up this tiny bow" Archers in real life: "We found an archer's skeleton!" - "... How the fuck do you know that?" - "Oh his entire back and skeletal structure is deformed from the amount of weight they pulled." Archers are some of the most ripped dudes in history. They went from swinging at people with swords to putting more kinetic energy into a tipped wooden shaft fired half a demesne away.
And they gave us the middle finger as an insult. French archers would show British soldiers their middle finger, the one they use to draw a bow, as a way of saying "I'm going to kill you." It spawned from the brits cutting off said fingers so archers couldn't be well utilized if taken back from being a prisoner.
@@zacharyharwell351 Yeah. Brits would flip off the French archers to be like " Look. I still got my finger and I'm gonna use it to smoke you. " It really just means " I've still got mine and I'm about to make it your problem. "

1:27:58 hi, me here, resident UnSub ‘Mormon.’ Yeah, Joseph Smith was a Freemason. The idea being that Freemasonry came from, kinda like Nick said, the builders of the Temple of Solomon, so they knew a bunch of stuff about the Temple, which got like passed down, and then 1830 rolls around and Joseph Smith is like “hey, you guys like old temples, I like old temples, you know stuff about temples, I know stuff about temples, we should hang out.”

1:15:43 There's a story of something similar-ish in India with the British Empire. When a wealthy man died, his wife/wives were expected to throw themselves on his funeral pyre. If they refused, the crowd would do the throwing. When the Brits said that was no longer allowed, local leaders argued it was their culture. So the Brit commander informed them that part of his culture was to execute anyone who did such a thing. He went on to say, "so you build your pyre, and my men will construct a gallows. You may follow your tradition, and then we will follow ours."
Yeah, certain culture aren't good such as the drinking culture in Korea and Japan as well as the rape and robbery in India, the child trafficking and abuse in certain South East Asia countries especially Myanmar.... The goat fucking in the middle east, the child soldiers in certain African countries, the drug and cartel problem in both north and south america
As a LotR fan, I gotta let out my own "tism". Elves can draw their bows back and hold them because they're stronger than men and their bows are "magical" in the sense that they're made from Elvish hair and are very easy to draw without compromising their strength (same way they can have light armor that's incredibly durable). Rohan's bows are nowhere near as good as the elves', but if I recall correctly, their bows are made from only the finest horse hair, which Rohan's are EXTREMELY good, and they'd still have some Numenorean technology floating around. LotR's war technology while on the surface is comparable to IRL medieval tech, in actuality it's much greater due to Tolkien's themes of everything being "lesser" than over time. With that said, it's still "rule of cool" for the movie, but there is some basis in the books for certain bows, swords, armor, and what not being far greater than their IRL counterparts due to our own primitive technology being "lesser" than that of LotR's.

1:23:39 Just a note on that fresh water thing; the journey of Lewis and Clark is pretty significant in MT and just since then we’ve had marshes develop in areas that, according to their journals, were dangerous because of how dry the area was. The opposite has also happened where there was once a large pond that’s now a silt flat. So with how fast the environment can change in a very inland area you’d have to do some in depth soil sampling across entire regions to get an accurate picture of water tables through history.

1:20:45 the reason the Terra cotta army hasn't been dug up further is because once the Terra cotta was exposed to oxygen, it took away its color and made it significantly weaker. Until a way has been figured out to not affect the statues coloration and strength, scientists and researchers have chosen to leave it alone to prevent damaging more statues.
36:16 Funnily enough, this sort of happens in The Walking Dead, both the show and the comic book. Mainly at the end of the comic, someone actually has to pay a fine for killing a walker because at the end of the apocalypse a character has a roaming circus to show off the zombies, because at the end of the series there’s people who’ve never seen a walker before. Basically someone had to pay a fine for destroying someone else’s ‘property’
"Yeah, there's a few walkers in the parking lot you need to take care of before you can come in, but we are still open" is the most accurate statement ever.

Here's the thing about the sword discovered in the Mausoleum of the First Qin Emperor (Qin Shi Huang): there were originally far more swords because the terracotta army soldiers all had real swords (for realism) that were stolen by graverobbers. The sword (and other weaponry such as arrowheads) discussed here was indeed in pristine condition and still sharp, but it was not due to metallurgy. A 2019 paper showed that a thin layer (10-15 microns thick) of protective chromium dioxide covered the weapons and played a protective role for over 2200 years, and that this was not an intentional process but rather due to contamination from nearby lacquered items; moreover research has suggested that the slightly alkaline pH and small particle size of the tomb site's soil played the primary role in weapon preservation.
I grew up (teenager) with the cool cops they're talking about. People forget officer discretion is part of the Constitution in the concept of checks and balances. All 3 branches can nullify laws. The legislative branch can write new laws to negate old ones, the judicial branch can rule laws illegal, and the executive branch (i.e. law enforcement) can choose not to prosecute laws.
I’m a competitive horse archer and it’s such a specific skill set and is very tedious to learn in a lot of ways. Spent two years training my horse to be able to do everything on his end (speed changes, turns etc) based strictly on my voice and body language so I never have to touch the reins, then I separately taught myself instinct shooting in archery and got the muscle memory down to the point that I broke a world record for speed. Still hold that record. Then I spent a few weeks getting my horse introduced to and comfortable around the equipment and the sounds, and after that I was finally able to start shooting from horseback. By then you have to be able to read your horse’s movements to keep your arms steady, be aware enough of your own body language to know what you’re signaling to your horse and accurate enough with your arrows to hit the target. It’s a ton of fun and it’s not horribly difficult to do, but it takes countless hours of repetitions to be able to build up the individual pieces to it and piece it all together. Your horse is your battle buddy, so the trust you build and have to have in your horse is incredible. Super super therapeutic to go out and be able to be on the exact same wavelength as this massive beast without ever even having to say a word.
Yeah I can imagine it takes a truck load of training. And even your obviously crazy amount(at least to me) of investment to learning this is nothing compared to those like the Mongols. Horse riding, and horse archery was(is?) their way of life. Children living under Genghis Khan learned to ride in much the same way they do today, starting between 3 and 5 years old and entering their first races between 6 and 12. And since horses were the main mode of transport, they would effectively spend most of their life on a horse. “To appreciate the Mongol you must see him on horseback,” author Elizabeth Kendall wrote in 1911, “and indeed you rarely see him otherwise, for he does not put foot to the ground if he can help it. The Mongol without his pony is only half a Mongol, but with his pony, he is as good as two men.”

Archeologists always know when the guy they dug up was an archer due to bone deformaties since they trained from little to yeet arrows with a war bow. They can 100% tell that this was an archer .

Right so one thing I really love to talk about is how the King Tiger, on top of it's already mountain of problems, had it's turret reverse tied to the engine rpm rather than it's own motor so in order for a king tiger to turn it's turret at any decent speed it would have to rev it's engine hard and basically announce it's position to anyone in a 1-5 mile radius depending on environment.

44:23 bless Nick and his history, but just a small correction. The Japanese were smart enough that the fungi recreated the exact railways that they had, validating their already built stations.
Another small correction to Nic is that there were indeed several pharaohs that were mummified, then buried beneath the pyramids in a burial chamber (it's technically beneath the pyramid but still part of the actual structure itself). Although, I certainly can't speak on their conductivity! :D
The Chinese apparently do dig things up. They are very much a part of the paleontology community. The reason Chinese government officials give for not excavating buildings is they don't want to damage them. Even though we could safely do it. I think they don't want people to see how bad it is there
26:40 Fun fact about those North Korean medal thing. Their medals and awards are hereditary. Not only the piece of metal itself, but the right to wear it and to receive benefits aswell. So if Grandpa Kim fought lets say in Busan and received a medal for that, and later dies in his lets say 60's, his son will inherit the medal with right to receive benefits for it and to wear it as if he did it himself. If he dies, his son does etc. Its basically a modern version of medieval tradition of receiving titles for something you did, and then your family inherits it after you pass.
I'd personally fund Nick's history degree - I love that guy. Between hIm and Rich I can't pick who has the best rants. This podcast is an extension of what made military service great. Archers in movies: '" am too weak to swing a sword, so i picked up this tiny bow"
Archers in real life: "We found an archer's skeleton!" - "... How the fuck do you know that?" - "Oh his entire back and skeletal structure is deformed from the amount of weight they pulled."
Archers are some of the most ripped dudes in history.

1:27:58 hi, me here, resident UnSub ‘Mormon.’
Yeah, Joseph Smith was a Freemason.

I remember watching a video on that guy, can't remember his name, he did more than just that.

Nick needs his own podcast that’s just him ranting about how much communism sucks. I’d genuinely pay for that.
Every episode starts with him chilling in front of a fireplace, wearing a robe, mug of hot chocolate in one hand and a book in the other, softly saying "Hello, welcome back to 'Communism's failures'" and starts getting angrier and angrier throughout the story that turns into another rant about Communism.

Back then, what else was there to do?

The Japanese were smart enough that the fungi recreated the exact railways that they had, validating their already built stations.

The Chinese apparently do dig things up. They are very much a part of the paleontology community. The reason Chinese government officials give for not excavating buildings is they don't want to damage them. Even though we could safely do it. I think they don't want people to see how bad it is there

Fun fact about those North Korean medal thing.
