Superb! Quick addition to this video, in the action list, there is an action called "FX: Set MIDI learn for last touched FX parameter". You can add a key shortcut to this action so you don't have to click on param -> learn to open midi learn window. You just have to click the parameter you want, hit your key shortcut and move your midi controller. Very useful in live situation (and potentially a must with the arrival of eye tracking technology)

Hi kenny, great video tutorials. I am currently setting up my Midi Controller based on those - thanks. I am struggling with the START/STOP buttons (assigning transport actions) - they seem to be temporarily active - only when pressed... maybe you have a video for that as well
you are always cool kenny. i always feel thankful. but do u know how to use normal plugins like delay or distortion as guitar pedal with midi commander in live guitar performance?
Very useful! Is this automatically disabled when the track is disarmed? Let's say I assign the same MIDI controller (e.g. pitch bend) on 2 different tracks / VSTs. Do I have to fear that I mess up the first track/VST settings, when I record the second one? Is it sufficient to disarm one track or should I completely remove the assigned paramater from track 1after I used it?
The problem is, my launchkey49 mk2 has 8 faders but only 1 of them reacts... I wanted to assign fader 2, 3, 4 to control each parameter with each finger. is it possible to make reaper recognize the remaining faders?
Hey thank you very much for this video. A question: How are the learned messages stored? Are they stored per project? I seem to lose the learned command assignments to a particular VST when I close reaper. Are they stored as part of a patch in any particular vst??
so is it somehow possible to save this mapping when opening the plugin the next time? i'd love to have a mapping for each VSTi I use, but would love to also do only one each also, preset's within a plugin won't change the mapping, right? if i have a fader mapped to cutof, it should stay mapped, even when i go through presets?
KENNY! Can you tell me what drum loop you're using in this tutorial? I want to make a similar beat for the chorus in my next song. I'm going to be recording my first dance song...
Hi! Is there a way with Reaper to specify a min, max and inverse value to control a parameter, with midi cc and without link two different parameters? Thanks
I followed the steps, but it seems to deactivate my CC knobs entirely and they can't be reassigned to other controls in a plugin. If I turn the CC passthrough FX off, I can reassign CC knobs but it doesnt remove the default settings for the knobs so both the default and the reassigned controls trigger at the same time. (Usually Attack, decay, sustain, release) Anyone have a fix? (Sorry for the bad wording)
Hi Kenny, I wonder if you can help me out. I've been trying to map various plugins to my controller. This is all going well, but 'Enable only when effect config is focused/visible' is not working for me - every time I select it and tab out of the Learn dialog it removes the tick from the box. Any ideas? Is this a bug?? Thanks again for your wicked tutorials:)
I doesnt work for me. Any troubleshooting? I got a microkorg and did the "midi note filter" When I click "learn" and then select a knob on my plugin and respective knob on my microkorg, it does nothing. EDIT: I forgot to enable the "controler" in the device settings :)
im being lazy right now but maybe somebody is super nice. i have a midi keyboard and i can record midi with it. it has a wheel. can i record whatever automation curve with that wheel? how?
You probably figured it out already, but for anyone else, you can save the mapping as the default for the plugin by clicking Param -> Default controller mappings -> Save as default. Or to save different mappings get the mappings set up the way you want and save the FX as an FX chain (right-click the FX in the FX window -> FX chains -> Save selected FX as chain. Then when you're choosing FX you can choose it from the FX chains folder, or you can right-click in FX window -> FX chains -> Load FX chain)
Hey Kenny. Is there anyway to tie midi learn parameters to a particular plugin on a global basis? So that regardless of project or track, every time an instance of a particular plugin is selected, the MIDI Learn parameters previously set are activated? The selected plugin piece is very useful, thank you.
I know this thread is from a year ago, but for anyone reading you can save the mapping as the default for the plugin by clicking Param -> Default controller mappings -> Save as default. Or you can copy the FX instance to a new track to keep the mapping (controller will be mapped to both instances of the plugin). Note also when setting up the MIDI learn mapping you can tick “Enable only when track or item is selected” or “Enable only when effect configuration is focused” so that the mapping will only apply to the currently selected tracks or currently active plugin. I presume this setting would also be saved if you saved the mapping as the default?
Kenny, one quick question... I am out of my home studio for some days and I can´t wait to know the answer by experimenting myself lol... So once I have set-up a knob from my midi controller to a specific plug-in´s parameter, Can I open that same plug-in in a new track and the midi controller will still be controlling that parameter? or do I have to re-map again the plug-in´s parameter in the new track???.... thanks in advance!!!!
I know your comment is a year old but for anyone else you would have to re-map if you just open the plugin in a new track, but you can copy the FX instance to the new track to have the controller mapping to both tracks. Or you can save the mapping as the default for the plugin by clicking Param -> Default controller mappings -> Save as default. Or can tick “Enable only when track or item is selected” or “Enable only when effect configuration is focused” when setting up the MIDI learn mapping so that the mapping will only apply to the currently selected tracks or currently active plugin. Cheers
Would it be possible to set up a damper pedal to control modulation or pitch? I got it to turn it on, but then it just stays on and won't turn off. I want it to go to max modulation when pressed, then back to no modulation when I let off. I don't have pitch/mod wheels on my kb. I tried using the volume knob, but it doesn't send any midi control data
I tried it again, and got it working for anyone who cares. Don't know how I screwed it up the first time! The only thing I did different from the tutorial is on the MIDI/OSC Learn window, I set CC Mode to Absolute, and that got it working. On the default setting, it only moved the mod wheel up one notch
Hey Kenny, why does your on screen virtual MIDI keyboard look different to mine? Yours is nicely rendered with a red strip at the top. Mine is flat matte white with the key names on it
but how do I assign a parameter to a virtual midi link (no external keyboard controller) and get it to actually work? For example, I move the wet on the reverb, then click "param", last touched parameter...midi link -> GP Slider 1. Now when change the level of GP Slider 1 in the piano matrix it does not move the wet knob on the reverb...it moves another knob instead. This is really annoying me

That was cool as hell

Do you know how to use a korg electribe sampler as a midi controller in reaper?
Muito funcional. Tudo.
Kenny, I have access to a Roland EF-303 as a controller for Reaper.
You think it's worth the effort?
Thanks!
Mind Blown !
Kenny I have the akai apc mini, how can get the pads take colors?? Like ableton
Can we use a controller mapper for the midi editor? Since they have different sections smfh!
can you show how to do this using the extensions on and off mod
Kenny quick question, not every VSTi has support for this right?
I've tried 2 piano vst's but as soon as I set the filter to 'No', I no longer have any sustain?!
Yeah because sustain goes through CC and the MIDI Note Filter blocks all CC events, so you lose all CC
same problem here... ¿any solution? T_T

Hey, it's not part of Reaper, it's an external program called Synthesia that Kenny adds in video editing to show what he's playing
Why isn't the filter plugin stopping all the new control signals kenny?
Because it's going straight to REAPER for control. The filter is just on the that track. REAPER is still responding to it as a control function.
REAPER Mania sorry I still don't understand how the cc's are getting to the plugin. Is it to do with the filter being on the input fx?
I wondered the same thing. It's great that Reaper still can use it on the same track where it's being filtered.

There doesn't seem to be a problem when you apply the FX plugins on a track, but there's a problem with MIDI links when applying FX on an item
How do you save those parameters in order to have different mappings to use?

Make sure that your MIDI device has the modes "enabled" and "control" (enable input for control messages). That did it for me.
it dosent work with knobs and faders on my Maudio oxygen mini
try the following: Open Options->Preferences Navigate to Audio->MidiDevices then right click your midi device and click "Enable input for control Messages" and hit Ok
awesome
How did you get the floating windows of the the keyboard wheels? Ty
Not very easily. Those are knobs from a plugin that I used to signify what was happening. So you can see what I was doing.
