Hardware MIDI Sends the better way - REAPER tutorial

  • When you have hardware MIDI devices like a synth or drum machine, there are a few ways to set it up to work with REAPER.
From the routing window of a track you can create a send to a MIDI output. You can pick up the sound of the instrument from a record armed track with an audio input.
One thing I don't like about this way is that hardware MIDI sends can't be bypassed/muted, only deleted.
An alternative way to set it up is to use the ReaInsert plugin, sending only MIDI. With this you can see the plugin in the TCP and just shift-click to bypass the send to the hardware.
For me this is much quicker to work with.
All this and more is shown in the video
    00:00 - In the begininning
    00:18 - Track setup
    01:08 - Capturing MIDI
    01:31 - Why can't we hear it?
01:48 - Option 1 - Routing Window MIDI Hardware Output
02:33 - Changing the sound after recording
    03:55 - A warning
    04:30 - Option 2 - ReaInsert Plugin
    05:54 - Major benefit of option 2
06:51 - This also works with drum machines
    Thanks for watching!

Another option would be to turn MIDI local off on the hardware. Most MIDI synths and drum machines have this feature. This is what I do with my hardware synths.

Finally, hardware as a plugin just like Studio One! Now it makes switching easier!

I mean this was a thing all the way back in Reaper 5.

@@vladv5126 Been an S1 user since 2011. I jumped to Linux for my audio needs and often struggle with looking for information concerning external synths and hardware and almost every DAW (Waveform Pro, Zrythm, I wont bother with ardour, and I have Studio One (S1) Linux) available on Linux. This route might suit me since I am unsure of the direction Presonus is going and how well their Linux implementation will perform. I would still prefer it to be 1 track for audio i/o and MIDI like in S1 but oh well.. two tracks it is. Reaper plays nicer with my synths - when I press stop - it stops everything.. unlike S1.

Could you make a quick short video on how to plug the different elements to achieve such config? Loved your video, I didn't know I could do that with Reaper 😁🔥

Nice tip! What do you think about enabling the Hardware returns in ReaInsert too so that ReaInsert instance will become the whole connection between Reaper and the sinth? Do you envise any drawback in this idea?

In fact, the trick shows here wouldnt be needed if we could actually bypass hardware out with shift click in the TCP. But it doesnt seems Hardware send has any kind of toggle on/off. Maybe a FR ? ^^

Oh nice, I was just wondering if I could send MIDI signal from the middle of MIDI FX chain to a external software MIDI Monitor. Reainsert is the way to go, thx ! 😎

ReaInsert is GOD. Until you use the synth's VST editor on the same track (

Why don't you just mute the track containing midi notes or mute the midi item?

      That works, too.

You are right I should’ve shown that too, but I didn’t think of it until I was uploading.

Can’t the Midi and Audio be on the Same track rather than two?
    This seems clunky.

Why on earth don't the devs just add the option to simply select Audio track in the track menu?? Like Ableton and Logic and others you then simply choose your input and output channels ,..DONE!!... Ableton has this nailed, its so easy, no messing around like this.
I would buy Reaper if they add this basic feature in, but until then, NO chance, i dont have time to be arsing about just to get outboard hardware synth audio into a Daw.
Come on guys, this is basic standard stuff in Daw.
