Tarana Burke: Me Too is a movement, not a moment | TED

- Опубліковано 3 січ 2019
- In 2006, Tarana Burke was consumed by a desire to do something about the sexual violence she saw in her community. She took out a piece of paper, wrote "Me Too" across the top and laid out an action plan for a movement centered on the power of empathy between survivors. More than a decade later, she reflects on what has since become a global movement -- and makes a powerful call to dismantle the power and privilege that are building blocks of sexual violence. "We owe future generations nothing less than a world free of sexual violence," she says. "I believe we can build that world."

Innocent until proven guilty!
Society says guilty until proven innocent
Unfair justice systems ensure the guilty remain innocent
Do you realize how humiliating it is for someone to come forward and admit they've been a victim of sexual violence? Yes, innocent until proven guilty. But the system is rigged. The "system" is over saturated with white men who grew up hearing things like "Boys will be boys" and being reinforced and forgiven every time they pull a girl's hair or touch her without her permission.
Sarah Phillips No one can be punished without evidence .. IS there any logic in punishing some people on the only basis of allegations
@@leafyveins4985 you classify pulling of hair as s€▪︎U@L A$$&Lt ? Haha
5:09 Numbness is not always absence of feelings...sometimes its an accumulation of feelings✌🏻
Yes, I agree. It is an amazing quote. She is very passionate about the Me Too Movement.
more like an overabundance of feelings.
It’s all justice and equality until someone makes evidence-free allegations.
How do you prove that if it happened long ago? Y’all are actually disgusting.
Through forensic evidence, I suppose. Gathering information about the concerned time frame, and corroborating it with the accuser’s claim. If no evidence can be found, then we’re left with an accusation with no way to verify it. S.O.L.
The only alternative at that point is to take the accusation at their word, and punish the accused. Since the judiciary is supposed to function on a system of innocence until proven guilty, convicting someone without proving they are responsible would be no form of justice. Perhaps it could even become precedent to prosecute whoever the accuser believes deserves punishment, carte blanche to kill people with lies.
Sometimes there is evidence, but it seems like men like to protect each other instead of listening to women. Rape kits are literally being ignored en mass. Some rapists are very smart and know how to avoid leaving dna evidence. Where is the justice in this?
@@alexandriawhite6916 Oh really? Men like to protect each other instead of listening to women? Typical conspiracy-flavored generalization. She completely forgets about the outrageous (and rapidly growing) numbers of soy-boy, male-feminist, beta-males. Ignorant extremists make statements like these. It's all or nothing. Everyone is against us! ALL men are misogynistic! ALL white people are racists! WE (just we, mind you) are subjected to nothing but injustice at all times from all people who aren't us! GIVE US JUSTICE!!!!
The most important part of her entire post was when she wrote "seems like" near the beginning. That, is the operative word, and speaks volumes. "Seems". Not just in this discussion, but all discussions ever, currently and historically. "Seems", is what nations go to war over. What cultures hate other cultures over. What people kill each other over.
Kids, learn from this. Don't be a lemming. Think for yourself, not as a mindless mob. Be an individual, and not a slave to cultural programming, it's all just fashion. Be offended by that which warrants offence, instead of simply mimicking what you see in the media. Ignorance, extremism, and conformity get along quite well, like a bacon lettuce and tomato sandwich. The flavors work so well together.
Fight the real problem. The stuff mentioned here....lol....it aint the real problem by a mile. It's just a consequence of the real problem, widespread ignorance.
I found really important she points out that Me too is a movement against sexual violence not against a gender sexual violence.
Leonardo Ibañez Calvo I thought so as well
I agree. I believe if it were gender sexual violence people would become easily offended and not hear her out. She made her points very clear in a non subjective way making those who watch want to become apart of the movement.
I liked that you pointed out that its not a gender specific community, and that it is oriented towards inclusion of all victims, which the name, Me Too, provides indications of.
That’s what I also thought at first. But now people are upset and saying that Amber Heard’s abuse towards Depp and her lies are a setback to me too movement instead of being happy that Johnny Depp, a victim of DV, got justice. So Me Too movement is CLEARLY feminist and only cares about women.
@@heheheha2247 not true. Made evident by Brendan Fraser. He said that because of me too he felt liberated to talk about the man who had sexually assaulted him at the Golden Globes. Which by the way noticed how you guys are constantly bringing up Johnny like you’re glad it happened because it gave you talking points. None of you have lended any public support to Brendan and you never talk about him even though his ordeal has been public knowledge since metoo was originally launched. Also you’ve never been there for Anthony Rap when he accused Kevin Spacey of having attempted to molest him when he was 14 years old. You’re more obsessed with ending this movement and having an adult conversation.
One of the best speakers of TED by far. Is about human integrity, not a war against males as she explained 👏
It's a war against abusive men who harass and abuse others, so those men are naturally reacting with anger at their exposure. They're the main ones who act like it's just a war on men.
The incredible imbalance of power. God bless you for speaking out.
This woman is a good woman. It’s a shame the movement was co-opted and twisted into “believe all Women”. Empathy to ALL victims of sexual violence ❤️
Believe all ABLED women now. Just watched 'Sweeties' say a good point: Why are abled allowed to speak but disabled do not?
@@laurendixon278 maybe you could clarify your point? Hard to tell exactly what you mean.
I love this I have tears in my eyes because I understand! I was raped 4 years ago and never got justice for what happened to me. I recently did a video about it on my other channel. I finally had the courage because of this movement. They always try to make it about the rapist instead of the victim. They vilianize them and make them look like the bad guy. Look someone could steal a candy bar and be put in jail for it! Why not a rapist? The only rapist that ever face a sentence also killed the person or they broke in their house or something like that. They say that there are laws to put rapist away but they don’t. I hate the word assaulted because it’s like trying to sugar coat the word rape. Just tell people the truth they need to know that someone raped you. Anyways I love this lady and I’m so glad she made this movement. It’s about the victims and creating a community that will help them heal instead of focusing on the rapist. It’s about us not them. They committed one of the worst crimes you could commit yet the justice system does nothing about it. It’s sickening. I never got justice for what happened to me. Had all the proof and they never took the case. They don’t care about us.
You are brave sister. Congratulations for being strong and steady. Don't listen the stupid people commenting in this channel :) Love to you
I love you girl. I'm sorry.
I'm very sorry to hear that, I hope all the victims will receive the justice they need,
My heart goes out to you. You’re very brave for sharing your story with everyone. Peace and blessings
In what type of environment were you in no offense and were you in an intimate setting as in a One in one situation in a confined space ? How were you dressed in what fabric or attire open tor shoes boots and wanted or needed a FOOT rub ? ALL OF THESE FACTORS REVEAL THE BEST IMAGERY OF THE SHAMEFUL/TAKE TO THE GRAVE TYPE SECRETS AND FEARS OF HOW PEERS WILL THINK OF THE EXPERIENCE YOU WENT THROUGH FIRST HAND 🤷🏾♂️
I don’t even know what to say in this comment section. Five hours after this video goes up the dislike ration is 2x higher than likes, a record for any UA-cam video I’ve ever seen. The comment section is yes, predictably filled with “trolls”, but much more dishearteningly, smart, educated people who do not understand and seemingly do not want to. Survivors are not advocating for false accusations to be shrugged at. False accusations are appalling. False accusations are rare. And when someone tells their story, still, the immediate response in real life is the same that you see in this comment section - blame, anger, being told you’re lying, you’re out to get something, you’re bad. And those who are accused? Yes, there are a few stories where some have lost jobs and/or reputations without due proces - and that is inexcusable and wrong and a complicated issue to solve. But those are the far outliers, not the status quo. We have so, so very far to go. If you’re reading this and disagree with me, all I ask is that before you comment, take 15 minutes to research actual studies done on false reporting. There are many out there. When you come forward you have everything to lose and next to nothing to gain. I would know.
If anything, the dislike ratio gives me hope. It clearly illustrates that not everyone is an easily manipulated lemming...free of individuality but chock-full-o enthusiasm for any and all fashionable new and exciting causes, regardless of any other considerations.
Thank u ms I’m dealing with so much pain
I’m so glad the UA-cam algorithm brought this to my suggestion list. Good God this Ted Talk should be played on every single tv station. It’s not just about one gender but a disgusting act that leaves the victims wavering for hope and joy. 😢
I am very moved by this woman's words delivered with clarity and calmness.
I have seen some unpleasant things said about her, a mixture of racist, misogynistic stuff, expected from unfortunately a large minority (the vocal minority) of bigots who vindicate her words entirely.
For what it's worth, and I'm sure Tarana couldn't give a fig, but I think she is remarkable - in all departments.

This has moved me to tears. Everything that she said you feel is true
This movement is essential to get support from all of us because this protects our kids, brothers, and sisters. This true it happens every day and make me sad, and we need to stand against any sexual harassment.
This movement is very strong and supports the rights of women. No one should have to live in fear. Hopefully one day everyone understands that we need to protect our women not hurt them. This movement is even beyond that now. It has become the corner stone for human rights.
thank you for your virtual room you created in your recent email METOO, it really did help
People who need to speak up, this is great for them but who will check the imposters who use this movement for publicity and fame. Who will check these people, who use this movement to share their story after exchanging their favor and using it for monetary gains?
If you dare question them you a sexist bigot that deserves to be fed to Satan. At least that's what Facebook users think
Do you think that if they did not use specific names of the individuals that may have hurt them, that it would still allow these individuals to have their voice without the questioning of the validity of their story without being able to abuse the power of their voice for the sake of gains?
I think is the specific naming of individuals where this movement took a wrong turn. Their story could still be told and just as effective without naming those individuals.
The fact that some stories are so descriptive that it's something that could be in erotica material, and there are people that get off on these stories, is also very bothersome to me. There has to be a better way to go about this for sure.
I hear what you are saying. Unfortunately, with a movement of this magnitude, it can be hard to keep the intentions pure. Sometimes, when a movement of this magnitude gets attention, it can ultimately attract bad attention. It can also lead to people with bad intentions to miss- use a thing meant to be used for good. That can be worry some as more and more people are fond of making false accusations. However, this movement can be that help that a survivor needs in a chaotic, overwhelming time in their life. It’s unfortunate that people have to miss-use this movement and what it stands for. The tricky question is, “how do we regulate this” and how do we ensure people aren’t miss-using this?”
They get checked often. The rapist and the abusers do not get checked. They frequently walk or get the minimal sentence.

I love your comment. This shows everybody's that abusers are not always men and the victims are not always women. The roles can definitely go both ways and I commend you for having the confidence to speak out and break the stigma!!
Stuart I am so sorry you had to go through this... no one should have to go through this terrible thing that got to you . I think it really is a good idea when someone see's a topic in their own experience. I hope you'r healing what you can from this.
Words cannot express how sorry I am that this was done to you and that you had to go through this. You must know that you are so brave and strong for having the confidence to speak out and tell your experience. It must not have been easy to disclose and I really admire that you have the courage because of this movement. I’m glad she created “the mee too” movement that’s supporting victims and creating a community that will help you heal.
I was waiting for a comment like this. Not every abuser is man and this isn't a witch hunt against only men. It's bringing justice and voice to every survivor even you, and I am here for it. You are not alone.
Is this buzzfeed or tedtalk?

I felt her fire!!!! It was explained so perfectly! Thank you! WOW!
It bored me actually
A while ago, a man at my workplace said some very inappropriate things to me (i.e. "I'm gonna install a camera under your desk to look up your skirt"), over and over again in various ways, and this was how I dealt with it.
1. I was new to the company, I didn't know anybody, I wasn't sure why this was happening to me, and why nobody spoke up despite him doing this repeatedly to me and other women. So I asked around to establish the history of such behaviour.
2. Turns out that this guy thinks he's being 'funny' and has gotten away with it in the past by downplaying the severity of his actions. People who condemned him were called out for being 'unfunny', 'no sense of humour', or just downright 'bitches'.
3. I approached him to tell him to stop but he shrugged me off and told me 'lighten up' before commenting on my 'beautiful legs'. I thought to myself, "He's just not getting it. I'm not getting to him."
4. I finally had enough and spoke to my manager. I kept my story brief to avoid injecting too many conflicting emotions into it although I was ashamed, terrified, and upset. I wanted to protect myself, but I also wanted to protect this man's reputation. Why? Because I didn't think he committed a serious crime.
5. I asked my manager to help resolve the conflict, and he did. He was very swift and blunt. He didn't ask me any unnecessary questions except questions to clarify certain things. He told me to leave this in his hands. And that was it. I don't know what he did after that.
6. The next week, this man apologised for his actions privately. And although I was a bit sceptical if he could keep his word so I told him to 'tone it down' or else he's going to have to deal with me again. I kept an eye on him.
7. A change occurred over the coming months but it happened very gradually. He was still brazen with his 'sense of humour' but I gave him the evil gaze everytime he did it. He gradually stopped and began to learn to treat women with more respect by not saying sexually explicit things to them at the workplace. He learned that his 'humour' might've been OK in a time long gone, but it wasn't OK any more today.
8. Today, we work together as a professional team. I trust his judgements and he trusts mine. He's a very effective co-worker. I wouldn't call him a friend, but he's not a threat to me anymore.
What do you all think about my story?
How dare you not day #MeToo and go on Facebook and Twitter saying that you have been sexually harassed. how dare you not day his name and address and ruin his life by making it a public event!!!!

This week I’m planning on taking my rapist and father of my child to court. I’m scared. He forced me to wait until the Pa statute of limitations of two years was up before I could tell my therapist or seek out a trauma therapist. Over these two years I’ve been collecting evidence, but most of it is text messages. Besides that I do have recordings oh him keeping me trapped in his car screaming at me then ripping me back into his car by my hair to prove his character. I’m terrified the texts won’t be enough for me to get a pfa. If anyone has any advice for me, please. He’s a narcissist and will fight this with everything he has. He’s tried bribing me out of speaking up, guilting me because we have a child saying I’d be a bad mother if I put his father away, and he’s used scare tactics. Please leave any advice.

I know it's been a long time since you posted this, and I'm sorry I didn't see it sooner. Regardless of whatever happened in the end, I want you to know - I (and so many others) am proud of you. You've been incredibly strong in coming forward to speak out, and by doing so, by seeking justice, you make our world a better place, and inspire others to do the same.
You are strong. You are beautiful. You've done the right thing. Thank you, for your strength. You shouldn't have had to do this, like Tarana Burke said. But you nonetheless are a truly incredible person for doing it.
We believe you, and believe in you.
If I had to give any advice? Live. Live your best life. Live happily, live joyfully. Thrive. In the end, I think the single best way we can spite our abusers is to keep moving forward and become the people we want to be. They try so very hard to hide it and overshadow it, but our futures are still bright.
This movement has done so much already. 800+ comments on this video, hearing it on the news, discussed openly whether in a positive or negative light by so many people. A miraculous change has happened because there is finally a large platform for discussion. My hat is off to you Tarana Burke, thank you.

It always used to be "politely ask first", however now you you have to "politely ask first before asking first".
Of course sexual violence needs to be eradicated and chased out of the woodwork, however instilling an atmosphere of paranoia and fear of accusation is getting too close to reversal of the burden of proof simply due to the existence of an accusation. To me, that's scary. Character assassination of innocent individuals and the people that do it are dangerously undermining the real victims and shielding real perpetrators. Any abuser of power needs to be brought down.

How are 'accusations' a problem in the first place?
Is/was there legal follow up? Why not? I'm quite certain it can be easily proven Common Law that lack of legal follow through is admission of the accused being 'Not Guilty'.

I am only 25. I live in Germany, a country that is supposed to be safe.
Yet so far i have gotten to know three women that were raped. All of them have talked to me about it. None of them reported the crime to the police. None of them spoke up on Twitter. One of them is my mum.
#meetoo should be about solidarity. About knowing you are not alone. About loosing the shame that comes with being a victim of sexual violence.
It should not be the mindless man-hunt it has become.
Yes it's a moment in time when people who have been assaulted need to start reporting and collecting evidence from the beginning because we have this thing called presumption of innocence and that is way more important than your feelings, and sorry to say, more important than singular cases of any crime, rape included.
Good points. But how exactly would someone collect evidence of being raped or violently assaulted WHILE in the minutes said actions are being perpetrated? Are we supposed to all be able to afford to outfit every room in our homes, workplace... ANYWHERE with cameras? Are we supposed to wear a body cam at all times? Do you see where I'm going with this, and if so, how do you suggest this be done?
But when you're a little girl who is told that if you tell anyone that someone will get hurt, you are terrified to say anything. According to you, vulnerable populations are at fault for not "reporting and collecting evidence form the beginning"
I've known women that have been raped, and I'm going to to tell you that in most cases they feel shame even though they've done nothing wrong. My friend who confided in me after being raped was too afraid to even tell her mother. I begged her to go to the police, but she wouldn't. She said she could barely manage to get up in the morning. She couldn't stop crying. She barely moved for days. Once she told me what happened several days had passed and she felt it was pointless to go to the police. What evidence did she have? It is very easy for men to say that it was consensual and it is almost always your word against theirs. So, in coming forward, survivors are vilified, called a liar, and forced to relive their trauma again and again. I wanted her to turn him in more than anything, but I couldn't make the decision for her. Ultimately, I'd say unless you've been violently forced down, stripped of your clothes and had a man shoved his penis inside of you again and again, it's not really your place to be telling survivors how they should act. Also side note, it's not easy to play Sherlock Holmes and "collect evidence" directly after being sexually assaulted...just a few things to consider.
I think many of you are confused about rape and sexual abuse. Many of these victims are children and teenagers being raped by close family members. Once they move into adulthood they become survivors . Y’all truly are out of touch.
@@Lily-gs9iv Its you thats out of touch, no one is saying anything about not supporting people but the me too movement is about prosecution after the fact and belief before evidence.

Did the men posting NEGATIVE stuff here--focused on "false accusations" about sexual violence (which LAW ENFORCEMENT says accounts for about 3% of reports---"ironically" about the SAME number of CONVICTED Rapists).--DID ANY OF YOU ACTUALLY LISTEN to this talk BEFORE you posted? Tarana Burke actually also INCLUDED BOYS & MEN who've experienced SEXUAL VIOLENCE. As a survivor myself, it's really discouraging that in the 21st CENTURY, to0 many men STILL WON'T EVEN BOTHER TO LISTEN TO US. Plus: adding INSULT to the INJURY of CENSORSHIP of Survivors' voices, the men posting here who can only make DISGUSTING comments about Tarana Burke's APPEARANCE reveals those men's SHALLOWNESS, BACKWARDNESS & CRUELTY: you are part of the PROBLEM. I tel,l you this: there are women, girls, boys & men IN YOUR LIFE who have experienced sexual violence---and YOU ARE HELPING SILENCE THEM--meaning YOU are CONTINUING the SILENCE VIOLENCE
... You do realize how rare (real) sexual violence is, right? I'm not saying people haven't been raped, because they have, but 99.999% of people you'll ever know haven't been a victim of sexual assault.
Thank you for mentioning the 1/6 boys statistic.
I'm sure your statistics are highly conflated, but I'm glad you at least care about boys before they turn into Men.
*So beautiful.* THIS IS NOT A MOMENT // IT'S THE MOVEMENT
As a lot of the comments display, there is an enormous pushback at every revolution. Women have been silenced for 10,000 years. It's a new dawn. ✊
Lost all respect for her when she tweeted (paraphrased) "that her job is to go after black men and not white men". as though black men are the only people in this vast country of men who commit acts against women. Yet, she condones the #MetooMovement agenda being a racially inclusive agenda for all women victims and not exclusive to just black women victims! What an ignorant hypocrite at heart!
I got here after watching her verbally attack Spike Lee with her audience. It's a thumbs down for this one. She hates black men on a level that it's scary.
@@official6arz Tarana Burke hates Trump with a passion, along with each and every citizen expressing support for any Republican. We are trash in her eyes, clearly sexually assaulting a piece of trash is not a serious crime rising to the level of raping a Democrat. Your hate destroyed you Tarana, too bad, you really could have made a difference. MeToo.
JESUS IS ON HIS WAY BACK TO PLANET EARTH VERY VERY SOON JUST BE READY TO MEET HIM HE DIED FOR A LOST SICK WORLD ON A CRUEL CRUEL CROSS JESUS GAVE UP HIS BEAUTIFUL LIFE FOR EVERYONE "WHOSOEVER BELIEVES IN HIM WILL NOT PERISH BUT WILL HAVE EVERLASTING LIFE"
The dislikes are coming from incels who are hoping to silence campaigns like this one. I'm glad #MeToo won't break against the misogynist waves ✌🏻
Scorpius Jones Nah.... this person has a personal vendetta against BLACK men and is attempting to make R.Kelly her poster child for sexual abuse. She is opening Pandora’s box! The fact that females can come back decades later and trample men’s lives and careers is absurd! If no police report was made and it’s decades later they need to suck it up and move on! Especially when ALL we have is their word! My two cents
misogynist waves? lololol! what a tard!
That which fights for themselves but not others is doomed to fail. And that is what this is. They have honorable intentions, but those intentions are marred with manipulative words and lies.
It’s a movement to men going monk. Remember, all she has to do is change is change her mind and there is no due process in the court of twitter. Allegations front page, retractions back page. Www.register-her.net. Www.helpsaveoursons.com #GoneMonk
Ugly is no longer a word.. IT LIVES!🤢🤮⚰💀
Guilty only when the act is proven to be wrong.
Innocence until proven guilty.
Justice is blind.
She is officially the KRS Two. No doubt
Hypocrisy.
This belongs in a court room, not on Twitter.
Tarana Burke:
- MeToo... please.
KRS2, Gayle King, Oprah...your microphone has just been turned off
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Let's skip over all the white men and zero in on all the black male celebrities. #metoo
That's a nose of the century
All this woman wanted was a man and she found one and left the movement hanging hahahaha now the transformed got something for you ladies good luck
KRS-One pushing "me too" agenda ! WTF !
Has anyone noticed that we've never seen Tarana Burke and Dodgers pitcher Pedro Báez in the same room together?
