    Macallan 18 Review
    *Editors Note: After consideration and comparison to other similar whiskies, I would chance my score to 89.5/100 on this.
    Scores:
    After my initial score I add or subtract points relative on how I perceive value (based on what I paid for the bottle). A zero value means I think the price is justified.
    0-69.5 - Don’t bother trying, life is too short for bad spirit.
    70-79.5 - Worth trying, but you’re not missing out if you don’t.
    80-84.5 - I recommend trying.
    85-87.5 - Definitely try this!
    88-92.5 - I recommend buying a bottle blind!
    93-95.5 - Stuff you reserve for special pours!
    96+ - The meaning of life.

    This 1997 Macallan 18 sells for now around 1300 us dollars in 2022

    I have a few wee drams of Macallan 18 (1987) remaining. Was $130 when I bought it; now it's $275. Never had the 25 because I'd rather use that thousand dollars on another gun. Absolutely LOVE the 18. I could just sit there and nose it until it evaporated. Thanks for the review!

    I’ve thought about preserving my whiskies with that gas too but I’ve also enjoyed how they change with time. I will probably do that once I move up to bottles that are out of my everyday price range.

    Nice review Jeremy. I like the Mac 18 too but hard to pull the trigger on it when I can get 2 Allardice for same price or even Parliament and Allardice. The Mac 18s are running 260-290 around me. ..still some 96 and 97 vintages out there. It does have a great flavor and nose!

      I agree, the Glendronach's do offer much better value if you're spending $260+ on a Mac18. Cheers

    Great review & absolutely agree about the need to preserve special whiskies. Personally, the Mac 18 is one I’ve never paid for, even @ a bar. I’ve only enjoyed it through the generosity of friends. 😂 Like someone else commented, I just can’t get myself to pull the trigger when I can get multiple bottles of other, equally or more enjoyable (to my mind), whiskies.

    I havent had the 18 but I like the 12. For me its the prominent fruity sherry and toned down maltiness that makes it good.

    I've had some of the 18's from the early to mid-90's distilling dates but wonder how they stack up against the more recent ones from 1-3 years ago, especially the ones with Macallan's new bottle design. I've heard the quality of the juice and casks are starting to go downhill, or maybe connoisseurs are not liking the change?

    Hi Jeremy, wondering how this compares to Glendronach 18 which is known to have older whisky for now ? Would love to try this but if I were going to pull the trigger on something this expensive Glengoyne 25 or Craigellachie 23 would probably be the bottle. Cheers

      Ive done the head to head before and I picked the Macallan as my favorite. unfortunately the Mac18 is no longer $200, so the Glendronach is better value

    I'm catching up Jeremy. I'm just old enough to have drunk Macallan in the late 80's. A company used to give it (the 10 year probably) to the people I worked for and it was glugged down without any real appreciation. I got some Mac 18 a couple of years back before the prices rocketed. My bottle of 95 was very nice and my 94 is unopened. Check out the colour of those bottles and compare them with today's Mac 18. No comparison. They are clearly using more refill barrel in the recipe than they used to and the quality has diminished. Glengoyne 21 is a similar style and just as good but half the price. Gordon & Macphail do the Speymalt, which is sherried Macallan, and you could get the 18 year old for a fraction of the price but that, alas, has also jumped up in price now.

      I have a few 96 and a 95. I doubt I'll buy the newer releases, cause i got mine for less than what the new ones go for.

    I’ve been watching these on UK auction sites over the last year they are starting to go crazy price wise. A 1994 UK spec bottle just went for £775! I would certainly buy them for $299 if you can still get them at that price! A 1990 or a year before and after are now reaching £1k...

    • @SippersSocialClub
      @SippersSocialClub  3 роки тому +1

      Prices are going crazy on these. I still have a couple 1995, 1996, 1997s. The current value is so much more than the quality of the whisky, so probably not even worth opening

    Great review of a classic single malt, the 1997 Mac 18 (I love this one). The older ones are as good or better. I haven't bought any recent Mac 18s either and would rather get the GlenDronach 18 or 21. Cheers Jeremy

    Hey Jeremy, love your reviews , just subscribed. I tried the Private Preserve a year ago on a half full bottle of Lag 16. I reopened it after 6 mos. and found it rather "flat" with a considerable loss of smoke/peat. A friend tried both the gas and parafilm tape on a Port Charlotte MRC-01 for about 8 mos. and claimed poor results with the gas and excellent results with the tape. Have you tried the parafilm?

      I got mine at auction for a good price a couple of years ago but that is not where most people go and Mac 18 is going up and up. Most retailers sell the current release for £200+, if they have any left. I have found some 94 below £400 but that is rare. I wouldn't pay that price either but some people are.

    I feel I should just buy a case of 25yr old Balblair 1990 for $150 a piece and call it good lol why are Macallan whiskys so damn expensive?

    • @SippersSocialClub
      @SippersSocialClub  6 років тому +1

      Macallan says they spend a lot of money on their sherry barrels, which is true. They also have a huge brand reputation/ recognition, marketing ect. So they can charge more as a premium product. Macallan is also the most collected whisky.
