  • You asked for answers to some questions about watercolor basics like water management and good paint sets for beginners. In this video, I answer those questions for you. We look at water management for cleaning brushes, my favorite paint sets and how much water to use while painting (and what to do if you get too much). Take a watch and get answer to some "before you paint" types of questions. It is my hope that the information is helpful, and if you have additional questions, please put them in the comments so I can address them for you.

✏️ Supplies Discussed in the video✏️
I do not get commission on anything I recommend - these are just the supplies I love.
Paper: I usually use Strathmore 400 acrylic or watercolor paper, or Arches 300 lb. watercolor paper, any watercolor paper will work.
Watercolor: I recommended 2 sets for beginners. They are:
Josie Lewis - www.josielewis.com/wcshop - this set isn't in stock all the time, but you can sign up for her newsletter to be notified when it is restocked
Art Philosophy Co. Watercolor Confections sets - www.artphilosophy.com/product... - there are a bunch of sets in this collection - all are good and you can choose the color palette you like. These are nice because you can get individual color refills if you use one up. NOTE: Their website doesn't work on some browsers, but it works fine on Chrome.
I also mention Daniel Smith watercolors. While more expensive, these are excellent paints. danielsmith.com/product-categ...
I also mentioned a number of other watercolor artists to take a look at because everyone has their own style, and their water usage varies based on that style. Below are Instagram handles (and websites if they are available). I'm not sure if these are on Facebook as well, because I'm not on Facebook much, but you can search the names below:
Art Philosophy Co - @artphilosophyco - website above
Artistic Isle - excellent handmade watercolors (also has painting demos on Instagram feed) - @artisticisle.watercolor - www.artisticisle.com/
    Danielle Donaldson - @danielledonaldsonartist - danielledonaldson.com/
Marmalade Mondays - @marmalade.mondays (no website)
Tiny Cactus Designs - make the color shifting paints I show - @tinycactusdesigns - linktr.ee/tinycactusdesigns
Josie Lewis - @josielewisart - website above - also sometimes has painting demos on Instagram
AS Paints - @as_paints - just a person who is fun to watch paint
Beth Suter - @bethsuterart - fun to watch paint - puts some of her paint process videos on Instagram - bethsuterart.com/
Terri Foss - @terrifoss - another fun one to watch paint on Instagram & I believe she has a UA-cam channel too - linktr.ee/terrifoss
These are a few artists I love to watch, and you can find other by searching hashtags like #watercolor #watercolorpainting #watercolorart #watercolortutorial #watercolorartist #watercolorillustration #watercolordaily and pretty much anything related to watercolor. As I mention in the video - watch other people paint because we all do it differently and the best way you can learn things like water control is by watching others and then DOING it, PRACTICING it yourself as much as you can.
You can even find watercolor classes on Udemy, Skillshare, Domestika, Coursecraft, Kajabi and most of the other online class platforms. You can often find locals in your area teaching watercolor too.

My pleasure Suzy! I'm glad you found it useful! I too do the same thing in an art store - oh look! It must come home with meeeee!😂😂😂😂😂😂 UA-cam (my channel or a search) is a wonderful place to find out how to use specific supplies so it can take some of the fear out of playing around.

Love this! Thank you so much for doing this; it is extremely helpful. I will be anxiouslly awaiting your next video. Do you happen to have a discount code for either of the more affordable palettes??

Glad it was helpful! Unfortunately I don't have a discount code. I'm not an official spokesperson for either one - I just really like and use them. You may be able to sign up for the newsletters for either one on their websites which are listed in the description of the video. Sometimes they give discount codes in their newsletters.

@@PaintedWillowArt Dawn, have you ever used St. Petersburg White Nights?? I was just wondering how either of these affordable palettes might compare. I have a small set of Daniel Smith & a Horadam & I question what is wrong with me as I prefer the White Nights. Lol

@@ThereIsSoulInArt I haven't tried that specific brand, but I know others who have that really Iike those. Appears to be a bit less expensive than Daniel Smith paints. There is absolutely nothing wrong with you! Everyone has their own favs. That's part of why I always suggest people play with and try new supplies. There are TONS of paint brands out there. The ones I suggested just happen to be some of my favs. But certainly, if you have paints you like, keep using those. Just Iike there are tons of techniques, there are tons of paint options, and everyone will likely tell you a different fav.😂😂😂 Would love to hear what you like about the White Night paints. Others reading might find that info helpful as well.😁👍
